- Description: The Agile software development methodology has progressed over time and has become the most popularly used methodology for many projects owing to its adaptable and advanced nature. Agile is an iterative and incremental method that supports project teams to maintain the growing demands of present-day organisations. In software development, it is imperative to build software that ensures a holistic user experience and meets requirements. Software Developers and User Experience Designers focus on users’ preferences and requirements while navigating an application through an approach called user-centred design (UCD). The purpose of Agile user-experience (UX) methods is to build user-centric software solutions using the Agile methodology. Literature indicates a scarcity of Agile-UX models to integrate user experience design processes effectively within Agile software development. Hence, the motivation for this study was to create a practical model for integrating user experience design processes into Agile software development for implementation by software development teams. Initially, the study defines the problem that formed the basis for the initiation of this research, followed by the research questions and objectives that are the fundamental portion of the development of this study. This study highlights the benefits and challenges of Agile-UX methods through a case study of Agile software development teams in South Africa. Furthermore, additional best practices are recommended. A survey questionnaire was distributed to software development teams to identify the various factors that lead to implementing Agile-UX methods. The distribution of the survey questionnaire supported the theoretical perspective of this study. Furthermore, Agile development (AD) and UCD are not easy to combine as UCD aims to understand users before software product development, and no activities are performed before development starts in AD. Its provisions include but are not limited to the usage of personal information for marketing purposes. While it was announced that enforcement of the law would commence in July 2021, many organisations are still in the process of reorganising themselves to comply with this important piece of legislation. Although the Information Regulator’s guideline document is available for utilization, organisations are struggling to develop POPIA compliance frameworks tailored to their operational requirements. As stated in section 6.2.1 of the Information Regulator’s guideline document, the act calls for the appointment of the an Information Officer by organisations who is required to develop, implement, monitor and maintain a POPIA compliance, framework. With that stated, this study aims to reports about developing a POPIA compliance framework for the City of Tshwane’s Fresh Produce Market. The study’s primary objective was to develop a POPIA compliance framework for the City of Tshwane’s Fresh Produce Market (TFPM) as a collector and processor of personal information. The study had three sub-objectives which were achieved using three research methods, namely literature review, content analysis and semi-structured interviews. Through a literature review, conditions that should be adhered to in relation to collecting and processing personal information were identified. Shifting the focus to the second sub-objective, a vigorous content analysis was performed to investigate the TFPM’s current method of collecting and processing personal information. The process involved evaluating the TFPM’s SOPs, Service Level Agreement, License Agreement, and the city of Tshwane’s Information Communication Technology Framework using the Nexia POPIA checklist. The evaluation results revealed a huge non-compliance gap with regard iii to POPIA and personal information conditions. However, there are also risks and vulnerabilities associated with this, thus cyber threats. Cybersecurity has been put in place to safeguard the internet from these cyber threats, yet there is an ever-growing concern regarding the implementation of cybersecurity, both globally and in South Africa. With the increase in cyber threats, there is a growing need and demand for IT professionals with the requisite cybersecurity skills and knowledge to combat and mitigate these threats. However, an ever-increasing cybersecurity skills gap has been identified both globally and in South Africa. Yet the specific cybersecurity skills demand, needs and challenges of IT professionals in South Africa are currently unknown. This study therefore investigated the cybersecurity skills demand, needs, and challenges of IT professionals in South Africa by reporting on IT professionals’ perceptions in this regard. An online questionnaire was used to gather information for this and was distributed to IT professionals using various online platforms. According to the findings of the study, there are several challenges such as lack of time, lack of funding and a lack of resources that South Africa must overcome in order to address the cybersecurity skills gap. From the survey results it was also found that neither tertiary institutions, nor organisations, nor the South African government are investing enough in cybersecurity skills development. Without the right cybersecurity skills set or investment in the development of cybersecurity skills, cyber threats will continue to increase and will potentially become more harmful to South African organisations and to the South African society at large. Furthermore, this study addresses the extent to which cybersecurity-related skills are required and currently used by IT professionals in South Africa to address the cybersecurity skills gap. Deaf parents are able to rely on available technology such as assistive technologies to overcome functional limitations. However, assistive technologies are often abandoned within a short period of time of being acquired. The abandonment of assistive technologies is believed to be due to a lack of proper elicitation of requirements. Therefore, the problem identified in this research is a lack of understanding of end-user requirements of an assistive technology for profoundly deaf parents with infants. A literature review together with logical argumentation was conducted and applied to identify and recommend a method suitable for eliciting end-user requirements for assistive technologies. Thereafter, an integrative literature review and thematic analysis was done to extract needs and challenges of profoundly deaf parents with infants, and group them according to themes that emerged. Finally, making use of the recommended method and the extracted needs and challenges of profoundly deaf parents with infants, twenty-eight end-user requirements of an assistive technology for profoundly deaf parents with infants were elicited. The twenty-eight elicited end-user requirements consist of eighteen end-user requirements that express functions of an assistive technology for profoundly deaf parents with infants, and ten end-user requirements that express an overall goal/objective to be attained by profoundly deaf parents with infants when the assistive technology is designed and developed. Towards a Cybersecurity Skills Framework for South Africa

- Description: Cybersecurity is an ever-growing area of concern both globally and in South Africa. The increasing number of cyberattacks daily has had a large effect on individuals, organisations, governments, and society at large. The growing need to combat cybercrime is accompanied by the increased need for skilled IT professionals to assist in protecting against cybercrime. Currently, there is a worldwide cybersecurity skills gap and a lack of IT professionals with the requisite cybersecurity skills. Many countries have developed their own taxonomies and common lexicons for IT and cybersecurity work, specifically for their context. This type of common lexicon is important to help assist in the development of skills. However, South Africa does not yet have its own cybersecurity skills framework to serve as a common lexicon for the South African context. Hence, the problem defined for this study is that, without a common lexicon of the cybersecurity knowledge, skills, abilities, and tasks (KSATs) required of IT professionals as they relate to specific IT job roles in South Africa, the cybersecurity skills gap cannot be sufficiently addressed. Such a lexicon could help drive the development of skills in South Africa and, in so doing assist in alleviating the cybersecurity skills gap. This study therefore presents a common lexicon by collecting job postings over a four-month period from 1 October 2020 to 31 January 2021. These job postings were analysed using a thematic content analysis. The results identified 20 common IT job roles, together with the specific KSATs relating to each job role identified. As a result, these job roles form part of a proposed cybersecurity skills framework for South Africa (CSFwSA) which could help and guide South Africa towards more targeted cybersecurity skills development. The proposed framework could also be useful in guiding tertiary educational facilities in the creation of cybersecurity curricula that represent the real-world expectations. - Description: Cybersecurity is an ever-growing area of concern both globally and in South Africa. The increasing number of cyberattacks daily has had a large effect on individuals, organisations, governments, and society at large. The growing need to combat cybercrime is accompanied by the increased need for skilled IT professionals to assist in protecting against cybercrime. Currently, there is a worldwide cybersecurity skills gap and a lack of IT professionals with the requisite cybersecurity skills. Many countries have developed their own taxonomies and common lexicons for IT and cybersecurity work, specifically for their context. This type of common lexicon is important to help assist in the development of skills. However, South Africa does not yet have its own cybersecurity skills framework to serve as a common lexicon for the South African context. Hence, the problem defined for this study is that, without a common lexicon of the cybersecurity knowledge, skills, abilities, and tasks (KSATs) required of IT professionals as they relate to specific IT job roles in South Africa, the cybersecurity skills gap cannot be sufficiently addressed. Such a lexicon could help drive the development of skills in South Africa and, in so doing assist in alleviating the cybersecurity skills gap. This study therefore presents a common lexicon by collecting job postings over a four-month period from 1 October 2020 to 31 January 2021. These job postings were analysed using a thematic content analysis. The results identified 20 common IT job roles, together with the specific KSATs relating to each job role identified. As a result, these job roles form part of a proposed cybersecurity skills framework for South Africa (CSFwSA) which could help and guide South Africa towards more targeted cybersecurity skills development. The proposed framework could also be useful in guiding tertiary educational facilities in the creation of cybersecurity curricula that represent the real-world expectations. A batteryless PV system for daytime commercial purposes is proposed in the dissertation. An experimental set up of the proposed batteryless PV system was constructed and tested in a laboratory. A load controller for the batteryless PV system was implemented, loads were given priority levels and schedule times to be operated during the day. A DC dump load regulates DC bus voltage and also acts as a water heater. Furthermore, a simulation model was developed on MATLAB Simulink. The simulation model consisted of two case study scenarios, 3 solar panel system and 7 solar panel system of an internet café business. Better system performance was noticed when loads were given priority levels with no schedule times. Through this disconnect, nature is bearing the consequences and is in a state of decay. As part of the cosmos, the natural envi-ronment is inherently imbued with sacredness; this sacred nature often manifesting itself within the very structure of the earth. Importance is then placed on how we po-sition ourselves and our holy places within their natural environment in order to set a precedent for the rest of our built environments. This treatise positions itself within ecology and the sacred. It focuses on the particulars of sacredscapes and pilgrimages within a context of Afri-can landscapes and African religions. This encompasses both the built and unbuilt elements of sacred architecture as well as sacredscapes through the reflection of cosmic rhythms, manifest order and harmony in order to create a holistic living organism aware of both the “real” and the sacred. Through its roots in holistic design, is sacredscapes align very closely to that of the ecological paradigm and the creation of integrated ecosystems. Sacred place often realised through the continuation of ritual practice. These rituals are a crucial part of African religions and most often find themselves in or associated with their natural environment. Through time, the Polytechnic has seen growth in infrastructure as new needs arose. According to (Dewar and Louw, 2017), universities fall within institutions with great importance to society therefore, physical environments for these institutions should be functional and inspiring to the end user. Though this haphazard growth was perceived as good by the institution, there is little evidence of rational thought in the design throughout the campus and this expansion resulted in extremely isolated buildings on site, creating vast amounts of unused spaces, lack of attention to pedestrian movement and the lack of attention to existing green areas. The study employed in this document uses both primary and secondary data gathered from desktop research. This was gathered with site visits and observations made at Lerotholi Polytechnic, Maseru, Lesotho. This thesis document is aimed at investigating and understanding the notions of identity and place in university. campus architecture.The findings reveal that the building to be designed needs to act as an edge towards the undefined side of the campus that sits on the busy road passing adjacent to campus. This should also work as an activator to the abandoned buildings that are still structurally sound near the chosen site. Furthermore, this building should act as a gateway while promoting more of the pedestrian activity.It can be concluded that “Identity” and “Place “ in campus architecture are of utmost importance and are the two elements which will be improved with the new design. They are characterised by the remanence of the apartheid city defined by sprawl, placelessness and monotony. Nowhere else has this reality been truer and more visible than in township settlements. Townships settlements are the polar opposite of suburbia. They are typically situated on the outskirts of urban environments with unpleasant living conditions characterised by the lack of public facilities and spaces, adequate resources and under-utilised left-over space. The poor urban conditions in township settlements is where this treatise has decided to position itself. The treatise will use both primary and secondary data resources collected from site visits, observations made, analytical maps and diagrams. The secondary data, includes books, precedent studies, articles and academic journals. The findings indicate that in order for the design intervention to be appropriate and successful, it is important that principles which improve urban qualities and a sense of place and belonging are engaged with and understood, in order to cater to the needs of the community. The treatise will explore the nature of Gelvandale from a macro scale towards a precinct scale regarding connectivity, location, spatial organi sation, activities, the built fabric, and socio-economic conditions. Through exploration, it was identified that Gelvandale functions as an enclaved system within the context of Gqeberha. The issues affecting Gelvandale were identified as the dispersal of activities, urban sprawl, fragmentation, and lack of urban legibility. It was identified that dispersed activities are one of the major contribu tors to the poor urban environment. This treatise investigates the significance of a football academy in Gel vandale, and how it could have an influence on society and the built form. Addressing this issue will be an effective way to improve the ur ban environment, to provide an urban and architectural response in an attempt to reduce the dispersal activities in Gelvandale. Through the exploration of the nature of dispersed activities in Gelvandale, it was observed that most activities are dispersed throughout Gelvandale, indicating that there are areas with a higher cluster of certain activities. In response, a pro posed strategy had been conceptualised to propose the consolidation of activities that are connected through pedestrian movement paths. Gelvandale had been identified as having a high intensity of sporting facilities and is therefore been proposed as a concentrated facility for recreational and sporting activities. An appropriate site was then selected for the proposed devel opment. The resultant outcome of the program was a Football Academy. - Description: This study proposes a 21st-century asylum for the criminally insane where the aim of the study is to investigate the interface between mental health and the criminal justice system sectors and how architectural design can have an influence on the psychological reaction of patients in the built environment. The problem faced with criminally insane people is that they do not al - ways have the ideal environment to go to when they seek help. Criminally insane patients used to be housed in asylums with inhumane living con - ditions. - Description: This study proposes a 21st-century asylum for the criminally insane where the aim of the study is to investigate the interface between mental health and the criminal justice system sectors and how architectural design can have an influence on the psychological reaction of patients in the built environment. The problem faced with criminally insane people is that they do not al - ways have the ideal environment to go to when they seek help. Criminally insane patients used to be housed in asylums with inhumane living con - ditions. - Description: Historically, news of a travelling circus coming to town created an atmosphere of anticipation andexcitement amongst all ages within a community. Normally the daily lives of the towns people were a monotonous routine, making the novelty and flamboyancy of the circus’s arrival an occasion to remember; the biggest day of the year showcased the greatest show on earth. Carnival processions would parade around the main streets and animate the whole town in order to gather people and subsequently lead the way to the big top tent. This spectacle brought entertainment to communities who would not normally be exposed, or have access, to environments made up of this wonder and excitement. In turn, to run away and join the circus was an attractive thought to the youth living in these mundane circumstances. Having been given a glimpse into what a theatrical life portrayed; especially self-expression and a strong community essence, the circus instilled something enchanting within the youth from otherwise difficult, diverse and indifferent backgrounds. Similarly, the UK collective Archigram, responded to the grey modernist environment with an architecture that appealed to the people through hyper-sensual events. The group imagined worlds that were both physically, or digitally, mobile; providing a moment in time in which a small village could experience events reminiscent of a city metropolis. Consequently, this treatise unpacks the popular works and research of Archigram to understand the relevance of an eccentric postmodern approach to modern-day placemaking within the Johannesburg city centre. A daily life of struggle and survival became common within the city centre as it started to see its decline in the early 80s. What was once the home of jazz, art, politics and insurgent popular aspirations now represents inner-city decay, dereliction and urban sprawl. The removal of major investments from what was the central business district has left city dwellers and their environment as victims of crime, violence and abandonment. The design of a performance space therefore aims to bring upliftment and celebration to the city through the circus ideal. The outcome is a world-class act that promotes social cohesion, creates opportunities, unlocks potential and transfers skills to the South African youth. - Description: Nearly three decades into democracy, the South African landscape is still embed - ded with the ideologies and systems of apartheid. Separateness has come to de - fine its cartography, drawing clear lines between races. To bridge the racial divide and reconstruct the national identity, the South African government adopted the Rainbow Nation as its brand. This branding did little to address the systemic racism ingrained into its society and landscape. This treatise identifies the limits of the rainbow nation, through an investigation of the intersections between memory, identity, and place. It identifies the imbalance in the expression of certain narratives as barrier in the progression of South Africa’s nation building initiative. Attempting to find a resolution, it offers the design of a performing arts center on Makana’s Kop, Makhanda as a starting point. This archi - tectural endeavor aims to express the oppressed narratives and memories of the Makhandan community. Through exploring how these issues play out in Makhanda, Makana’s Kop is iden - tified as an appropriate site for the architectural manifestation of this treatise. The significance of the site, and its relationship with other monumental structures in this city make it a suitable place for the design of a building of this nature. - Description: The treatise and proposed project deal with the creation of spaces rooted in the culture of a place, its identity, memory and meaning in the form of a contemporary regional archive and museum space for the context of Swellendam’s historical ribbon. The treatise seeks to find a strategy for a contemporary, yet regional specific, intervention in a traditional context and attempts to fulfil the creation of a place of culture, identity, meaning and memory. The methodology used for this architectural treatise is qualitative. In order to establish an appropriate building type, Swellendam's history and contextual data were analysed, at the same time, selected literature and ideas were introduced to establish the project's value set. Methods and principles are extracted and reinterpreted by the design project. Among the various works of literatures/theories reviewed in this treatise is that of Jonathan Noble, Maurice Halbwach, and Kenneth Frampton, among others. This respective literature sets the basis of the project’s value set on place and identity, memory and meaning, and tectonics and materials. The town’s rich history, morphology and nature of physical context are selected as an appropriate site. Furthermore, the treatise explores museums and archives as building types. This is done through the comparison of precedents under the light of certain issues. From this, the building type’s activities and spatial, programmatical requirements are gathered. Amid this various information collected are a set of relevant principles. Therefore, a set of principles (approach to memory, meaning and identity; heritage and conservation; extracting from the existing/vernacular/context; and approach to light) is explored and precedents are used to represent and learn from principles. This design project goes through a series of iterations to fulfil the specific architectural concerns and to create architecture specific for the context (relation to place, culture, history and site). The final design attempts to be a sensitive intervention, neutral in form, that resembles a heterogenous culture and hybridity. - Description: ‘Terrain vague’, a collective term coined by Spanish architect Ignasi Sola-Morales, denotes the unused, forgotten spaces located in between categorised spaces and artefacts. It is an omnipresent typology found within productive structures of urban environments, yet ‘mentally exterior to them’ , in other words detached from the energies that surround them. Physically, these spaces are identified as traffic circles, parking lots, open plots, spaces underneath highways, or forgotten buildings. These spaces have a strangeness to them, the detachedness from the conventions of their surrounds gives them a sense of mobility, freedom, and liberty. This creates a perfect environment for the exploration of new ideas. Therefore, this unrealised potential makes these spaces best understood as a relationship between the absence of use, and the sense of expectancy. Mobile interconnectedness has created a transition in the way we work and live together. According to Raumlabor (2018), these new socio-cultural and economic challenges demand new types of solutions which cannot be solved by top-down monofunctional implementations (Raumlabor, 2018). According to design studio Knoll (2020) “the home has become less home, and the office type has vanished. Instead, the work space has changed into a playground where connections are made and interaction is fostered”. This socio-cultural transition creates a shift in the appropriation of space, therefore creating a demand for new types of solutions (Knoll, 2020). This treatise investigates a process of renegotiation of leftover space on Westplein in Utrecht in the Netherlands. The site is an example of ‘terrain vague’ centrally located in the city. The municipality of Utrecht has initiated a temporary intervention on Westplein run by local societies and residents of the neighbourhood Lombok. The aim of this intervention is to generate input from locals through the act of placemaking before the reconstruction of the area into a public park. Furthermore, this intervention also aims to stimulate interaction and connection between local residents as a means to negate the potential for another gentrification process. Therefore, this project is a continuation of temporary activities run by the societies Stichting Perron West, Lucrative Dumpsterdives and Pluktuin. These activities include providing flexible workspace for local residents, collaborative public art workshops, events, concerts, gardening and other activities that connect local artists with residents. This project proposes an ‘architecture a communal and continuous process’ which reflect the needs of the current users, but is capable of being adapted to the technical ability of everyone in order to fulfil the needs of the future users without the creation of waste during its transformation.
