"A lean-led-evaluation" of infrastructure development improvement programme in South Africa

- Description: A doctoral study was embarked upon with the intentions of addressing cost management problems encountered on Infrastructure Delivery Projects in South Africa. Given that poor cost performance constitute hindrance to the realization of project goals, it is imperative to eliminate it from project delivery. The prevalence of cost overrun in public sector projects is a call to all stakeholders to address cost management issues in the construction industry. The predominance of cost overruns in public sector construction projects in South Africa has been observed. With the decline of the current economic conditions in South Africa, project performance is a great concern that needs attention. In addition, ineffective initiatives to curb the abuse of the procurement processes are directly affecting the outcomes of construction projects, and if these status quo remains, the sector will continue to have a bad image and continued waste of taxpayers’ money will not cease until the public sector remove non-value adding activities in their operations. Study adopted a mixed methods designed that collected both textual and statistical data. Semistructured interviews were undertaken to determine the outcomes of current project management practices in South Africa. In terms of performance of projects, the status quo paints a disconsolate picture. Findings reveal protracted processes, and the use of unqualified and inexperienced contribute to poor performance of public sector projects. Poor performance continues to dominate the construction sector, especially in the public sector. Interviews data were contrasted with evidence from project-related documents. Based on the data, the study produces a vignette of existing cost management frameworks applied to such projects. Encompassing various stages of the project delivery lifecycle, this vignette will enable an identification of the challenges afflicting cost management on projects. Accordingly, this study identified Lean opportunities from existing cost management practices. Such opportunities will enable identification of effective cost management during project delivery. There appears a need for collaborative cost management practices. Lean tools mentioned for improvement include the 5Whys, the big room, target value design, and the integration of design and construction. A collaborative cost management framework was developed through relevant theories to improve the cost management process of public sector projects.

In my ondersoek fokus ek op metamodernisme eerder as postmodernisme, omdat metamodernisme groter klem op die waarheid en die objektiewe realiteit plaas, wat ʼn opvallende tema in die werk van die gekose digters is. Die impak van aanlyn poësie op die identiteit en voorstelling van die Zoomer-generasie (individue wat ná 1996 gebore is, andersins bekend as generasie Z) word nagespeur ten einde die impak van hierdie poësie op die gemiddelde Afrikaanse Zoomer-leser te bepaal. Verskeie vrae rakende die posisie van Instagrampoësie binne die Afrikaanse literêre diskoers en kanon word ook onder die loep geneem. Die analise en interpretasie van die gedigte is daarop gemik om die literêre status van hierdie gedigte te ondersoek op grond van skryfpatrone, die evolusie daarvan en die gewildheid wat gemeet word in terme van followers (voortaan volgelinge), likes (voortaan bekend as voorkeure) en comments (voortaan kommentaar).1 Daar is bewys dat die metamodernistiese konteks (wat breedvoerig in die studie gekonseptualiseer en in terme van Suid-Afrika gekontekstualiseer word) waarin hierdie gedigte geformuleer en versprei is, ʼn beduidende invloed het op die toon en temas daarvan. A 5G Communication system based on flexible spectrum technology for the SKA

- Description: Faculty of Science Radio astronomy research is rapidly expanding across the African continent. At the same time, the fifth generation (5G) of mobile communication systems are also being researched and developed. Throughout history, mobile communication networks are known to affect the activities of radio astronomy. If not carefully managed, radio frequencies from mobile communication devices can severely affect radio astronomy observations. To that end, many techniques have been proposed to protect the radio astronomer from RFIs coming from radio communication networks. Some of the proposed techniques such as RFI quite zones and spectrum assignment by regulatory authorities will not be convenient during the implementation of 5G mobile networks. This is because 5G radio communication systems are expected to support spectrum-hungry application such as video-on-demand, augmented realities, high-definition television and so on. To realize this, the 5G networks will be forced to have access to protected radio spectrum, including those at which radio astronomy activities are being researched. To facilitate this, the 5G radio communication networks should have the intelligence to coexist within such protected spectrums without the consequences of radio frequency interferences (RFI) to the primary user. In this thesis, we present novel 5G networks with the intelligence that allow them to coexist within radio astronomy areas without introducing RFIs to the primary user. We proposed a photonic solution, keeping in mind the characteristic requirements for future 5G radio communication networks. The thesis begins by reviewing the current trend of radio astronomy research in Africa. It was found that radio astronomy research in Africa is growing rapidly. Many African countries such as South Africa and Ghana are at advanced stages when it comes to radio astronomy research. Therefore, the finding and proposal of this thesis will be valuable to such countries. In order to develop a radio access network (RAN) that can coexist within radio astronomy areas, the thesis reviewed past and present state-of-the-art RANs. Each access network was analyses for its feasibility to be implemented within radio astronomy areas to realize mobile communication without the consequences of RFIs to the astronomer. It was motivated that the current centralized radio access network (C-RAN) the best solution to be developed for radio communication within radio astronomy areas. This is because the C-RAN architecture is centralized by pooling network resources to a common point. From such pool, network resources can be controlled and shared among 5G network user, including radio astronomers and the surrounding communities. A bargain that dissolves into a poem unwritten: a critique of bargain retail practices and homemaking through critical design

- Description: Although bargains commonly manifest as loud advertisements and trivial objects, as a moment of exchange they provide a basis to critique economic relations and judgements of taste. This research presents a document study of “bargains” in the context of bargain retail practices and homemaking, illustrated in the case of OK Furniture in South Africa; further situated by Julier’s study of economy and class within design culture, and Bourdieu’s fields of cultural production. The investigation builds to a discussion of the research practice, alluded to in the research project’s title, “A bargain that dissolves into a poem unwritten”. The title is an entry from this practice’s journal that conveys how the everyday experience of a bargain might find a connection to poetry when its exchange is seen as a performance; as a moment or encounter “unwritten”, capable of generating different modes of meaning and sociability. Using critical design strategies, the research practice explores the manifesting discountproduct cultures and retail practices associated with homes as a way to inhabit richer interpersonal relationships and unscripted sociability. - Description: Although bargains commonly manifest as loud advertisements and trivial objects, as a moment of exchange they provide a basis to critique economic relations and judgements of taste. This research presents a document study of “bargains” in the context of bargain retail practices and homemaking, illustrated in the case of OK Furniture in South Africa; further situated by Julier’s study of economy and class within design culture, and Bourdieu’s fields of cultural production. The investigation builds to a discussion of the research practice, alluded to in the research project’s title, “A bargain that dissolves into a poem unwritten”. The title is an entry from this practice’s journal that conveys how the everyday experience of a bargain might find a connection to poetry when its exchange is seen as a performance; as a moment or encounter “unwritten”, capable of generating different modes of meaning and sociability. Using critical design strategies, the research practice explores the manifesting discountproduct cultures and retail practices associated with homes as a way to inhabit richer interpersonal relationships and unscripted sociability. This is discussed through four critical design proposals and 26 thought experiments, resulting in Text me when you see this, an online concept store that sells bargains, personal agreements, quality time, conversation and curio: www.textmewhenyouseethis.com. The research found that English is the preferred language for teaching and learning, even though the majority of the participants were isiXhosa home-language speakers. In addition, learners in South African whose home language is not English do not have the necessary language skills to cope with the switch to English as LoLT. Science teachers are therefore faced with two distinct challenges: firstly teaching content and secondly teaching the LoLT, if it is not the learners’ home language. The major difficulty experienced by learners when learning science is learning the language of science, as science is regarded as having a language of its own, with its own specific register and discourse. Thus, for many learners, learning the language of science is a challenge as it contains unfamiliar technical words and everyday words that have specialised scientific meanings (e.g. diagrams, procedures, table, current and force). English is seen as the language in which to explore these concepts. A conclusion that can be drawn is that English is regarded as the language in which to learn science thus reflecting the continued hegemony of English.

- Description: This study investigated a behaviour of South Africa’s economy towards inflows of foreign direct investment (FDI) from Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRICs) economies, during the period 1997 to 2016. The BRICs bloc was coined in 2001 by then chairperson of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Jim O’Neil. According to Goldman Sach (2001), the BRICs group was collectively expected to overtake the major economic powers over the span of a few decades. Their growth is expected to shape a new economic order and replace the currently dominant advanced economies. South Africa joined the BRICs bloc in 2010 as the jeweler of the world and as a gateway to Africa. It joined the BRICs group at the time when economic growth was at a sluggish rate, and the savings and investment were at the lowest rate. The country had a high unemployment rate, high levels of poverty and income inequality. On the other hand, the BRICs economies had limited intra-BRICs flows amongst themselves. It is against this background that this study investigated the long run impact of BRICs FDI inflows on South Africa’s economic growth, and the causality relationship between South Africa’s economic growth and BRICs FDI inflows. This study contributes to the body of knowledge of economics in South Africa and the literature on foreign direct investment and economic growth in South Africa. The study employed two cointegration methods to investigate the behaviour of South Africa’s economy towards inflows of foreign direct investment from BRICs economies. These are fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS) and dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS). For granger causality, the study employed Stacked and Dumistrescu Hurlin tests. All the models used time series annual data from 1997 to 2016. The Unit root test results confirmed that the variables were stationary at first difference using panel Im, Pesaran, Shin (IPS) and Levin, Lin, Chu (LLC). The research employs four regressions, first, Economic growth and foreign direct investment (i.e. private sector, banking sector and both sectors), human capital, physical capital, household consumption, government expenditure, exports, and arable land; Second, Employment and foreign direct investment, human capital, physical capital, household consumption, government expenditure, exports, and arable land; third, Economic complexity and foreign direct investment, human capital, physical capital, household consumption, government expenditure, exports, and arable land; finally, Unemployment and foreign direct investment, human capital, physical capital, household consumption, government expenditure, exports, and arable land. The cointegration results for private FDI and economic growth, employment, economic complexity, and unemployment. The results show only economic complexity has significant effect on foreign direct investment and other variables show insignificant results. - Description: Governments, internationally and nationally, are becoming aware of the importance of healthy work environments within their health departments, environments that are caring and supportive to health professionals. This awareness is brought about by the mounting evidence that healthy work environments are critical to recruiting and retaining health professionals. On the other hand, unhealthy work environments can contribute to medical errors, ineffective delivery of care, and conflict and stress among health professionals in the clinical setting and faculty shortage that can compromise academic excellence in the academic setting. The professional nurses working in the South African Military Health Service (SAMHS), a branch of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) could experience the military environment as unhealthy because it is rigid and controlled. The hierarchical rank structure could deprive them of their autonomy as the decision-making powers are directly proportional to the rank. Stressful conditions could be experienced when these professional nurses are taken away from the well equipped hospital environment to the deployment areas away from home. There was, however, no evidence found on the work environment of professional nurses in the SAMHS during literature review. The aim of the study is therefore to explore and describe the experiences of professional nurses working in the SAMHS and their understanding of a healthy work environment and the scope and nature of a best practice guideline, then to integrate the evidence generated to the evidence emanating from the critical appraisal of the existing best practice guidelines from other health settings in order to develop a best practice guideline for a healthy work environment for nurses in the SAMHS. The study adopted a qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual research design. The research study was made up of three phases. In Phase 1, semi-structured interviews were conducted with professional nurses to collect information on their experiences of working in the SAMHS and their understanding of evidence-based best practice guidelines. The interviews were transcribed by an independent transcriptionist and data analyzed using the eight steps of data analysis as suggested by Tesch. Themes were identified and grouped together to form new categories. The process of coding was supported by an independent coder. Lincoln and Guba’s model of Page | vii trustworthiness consisting of credibility, transferability, dependability and confirmability was used to ensure the validity of the study. An integrative literature review was conducted where the existing evidence-based best practice guidelines for healthy work environment for nurses were searched for, appraised, had data extracted and were synthesized in Phase 2. In Phase 3, evidence generated in Phase 1 and Phase 2 was triangulated, forming recommendations that were utilized to develop a best practice draft guideline for a healthy work environment for professional nurses working in the SAMHS. The draft guideline was sent to five expert reviewers for their comments and recommendations. These were considered in the development of the final guideline. The final guideline consists of several recommendations in four themes: the need for effective leadership to create an empowering environment; effective communication amongst members of the health team; a culture that supports team work, and; the need for an environment that promotes professional autonomy. Further recommendations were made to address factors that impact negatively on enhancement of a healthy work environment. The guideline is intended for use by SAMHS’ leadership, at Levels 2, the strategic level, Level 3, the formation level and Level 4, the unit level (hospitals, sickbays and clinics and nursing college) and all professional nurses working in all the military health institutions of the SAMHS, including the military clinics, sickbays and hospitals irrespective of positions. However, the guideline may also be adapted by nursing institutions outside the military such as public and private hospitals and clinics where they find it applicable. Results

It determines the level of clinical competence that nursing students achieve during their studies. It should be informed by current best practice evidence available in the nursing care literature (Emanuel, Day, Diegnan & Prys-Muller, 2011:21-22). Clinical teaching is centred around provision of patient care in clinical practice. It takes place through an interaction between the nurse educator and the nursing students. During this process nursing students are moulded so they can demonstrate minimum competency in order to be registered by the regulatory body. Nursing students learn to become competent nurses in the clinical learning environment (Baxter 2006; Nash, 2007 in Franklin, 2013:35). In South Africa nurse educators are required to be fully responsible for clinical teaching through the use of appropriate teaching approaches and learning facilitation techniques (RSA DoH, 2013:91). The overall purpose of the current research study was to explore and describe the current clinical teaching practices of nurse educators; to search, appraise, extract and synthesise literature related to clinical teaching in nursing; and to develop A Best Practice Guideline for Clinical Teaching at a Public College of Nursing in the Eastern Cape Province. This had to be realized in three phases. In Phase One a quantitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual study was conducted. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from the nurse educators involved in clinical teaching within the Diploma in Nursing (General, Community, Psychiatric) and Midwifery programme. The data analysed was used as the basis of Phase Two—namely, an integrative literature review of evidence pertaining to the clinical teaching practices of nurse educators doing clinical teaching within the undergraduate programmes. The evidence from Phases One and Two was used to develop a draft Best Practice Guideline. The draft guideline was reviewed by a group of expert reviewers and their suggestions were incorporated in the final guideline. Ethical considerations were maintained throughout the research study. The rigour of the research process was ensured by cognitive testing of the questionnaire, and by critical appraisal of the literature accessed from an integrative literature review. The v authenticity of critical appraisal was ensured by having the critical appraisal done by the researcher and an independent reviewer.

A best practice guideline for screening and managing chorioamnionitis

- Description: Due to the complex nature of chorioamnionitis, women are often misdiagnosed, undiagnosed or only diagnosed after birth when it is too late to prevent maternal and neonatal complications. A lack of a comprehensive best practice guidelinefor screening and managing women withchorioamnionitis resultsin delayed treatment and management that could minimise maternal and neonatal complications. Saving Babiesreported that unexplained intra-uterine deathsremained the main primary (obstetric) cause of death for babies with a weight above 1000g (24.4%of all deaths). Of these unexplained uterine deaths, 33% are of normal birth weight (>2500g), and,therefore,most likely term gestation. Saving Babies further reported that 22.9% of all live births in South Africa was premature and 22.8% of birthswere unexplained intra-uterine deaths. Prematurity is one major complication of chorioamnionitis. When susceptibility for chorioamnionitis is considered during early pregnancy, it is possible to intervene and prevent or even reduce the incidences and complications of chorioamnionitis.A qualitative research study was conducted in three phases. In Phase One(Part One), a theoretically constructed patient scenario of chorioamnionitis was presented to ten midwives,and semi-structured individual interviews were done to elicit information regarding how they screen for and manage chorioamnionitis. In Phase One(Part Two), experienced medical practitioners in the field of obstetrics and gynaecology were individually interviewed, also using semi-structured individual interviewsto gain their views regarding chorioamnionitis as a contributing factor to maternal morbidity and mortality. Qualitative findings in Phase Oneindicated that there is a general lack of knowledge regarding chorioamnionitis among midwives, resulting ininadequate screening, misdiagnosis and mismanagement of the condition. Experienced medical practitioners confirmed that chorioamnionitis is underdiagnosed, misdiagnosed or undiagnosed and underreported,and they hold views that it is difficult to treat and control pregnancy-related infections according to current practice.An integrative literature review was conductedin Phase Twoand literature regarding diagnostic biomarkers, screening options to diagnose chorioamnionitis and management of chorioamnionitis were extracted. - Description: An Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is a robust method of clinical assessment which, when properly planned and executed, results in a high quality and credible student assessment. However, concerns regarding its uniformity, fairness, objectivity and accuracy have been raised. Concerns regarding the management of the quality of OSCEs at a public College of Nursing in the Eastern Cape were raised by the College’s stakeholders. No best practice guideline had been developed regarding the management of the quality of OSCEs for this College. The aim of this study was therefore to develop a best practice guideline for the management of the quality of OSCEs at a public College of Nursing. The Transformative Pedagogy Theory proposed by Khedkar and Nair was used as a philosophical underpinning for this study. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) model for evidence-based healthcare was used as a theoretical basis for this study. In Phase One, a qualitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual design was used to explore and describe the experiences of nurse educators regarding the management of the quality of OSCEs at a multi-campus public College of Nursing. Semi-structured individual interviews were used to collect data from fourteen (n=14) nurse educators. Thereafter, a qualitative document analysis of fifteen (n=15) external moderators’ reports was conducted to explore the information external moderators shared regarding the management of the quality of OSCEs at a multi-campus public College of Nursing. A document analysis checklist designed by the researcher was used to extract the data from external moderators’ reports. Tesch’s method of data analysis was utilised to analyse the data from the interviews while the data analysis process proposed by Dalglish, Khalid and McMahon was used to analyse the data from the external moderator’s reports. In Phase Two, an integrative literature review was conducted to search, select, extract, appraise and synthesise best practices regarding the management of the quality of OSCEs in health sciences education. The adapted integrative literature review steps, as proposed by de Souza, da Silva and de Carvalho, were utilised to guide this phase. Data of a total of thirteen (n=13) articles were extracted and synthesised. In Phase Three, the findings of Phase One and Phase Two were synthesised, as a basis for informing the development of a best practice guideline for the management of the quality of OSCEs. The National Institute for Health and Care (NICE) and the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation II (AGREE II) frameworks were used as a basis for developing the best practice guideline for the management of the quality of OSCEs at a multi-campus public College of Nursing. Replication logic was used to generalise the results and the findings of this research effort suggested that the following variables emerging from qualitative themes, positively influences the perceived success of the financial feasibility in property development projects: profitability, risk management, outside advice, trend analysis, property cycles and demand planning. The implication arising from this study is that the perceived success of international financial feasibility in property development projects has the following positive influencing factors: profitability, risk management, outside (specialist) advice, trends analysis, property cycles and demand planning which must be considered by property developers and investors to ensure the success of their property development interventions. The study was organized into three phases. In Phase One: a qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual design was employed. The research population included healthcare professionals, providing services at the HIV clinic at the public hospitals in Ghana, namely the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital; the 37 Military Hospital and the Ridge Hospital. The healthcare professionals comprised of doctors, nurses, pharmacists and trained counsellors employed in any of the three public hospitals. Persons receiving ART at any of the three public hospitals were also part of the research population. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with healthcare professionals and persons receiving ART. Data were collected from healthcare professionals in relation to their experiences regarding the provision of ART services, their understanding of evidence-based practice and best-practice guidelines, as well as data on the experiences of persons receiving ART in relation to their adherence to the therapy. The data were analysed using Creswell’s six steps of data analysis; and the coding of the data was done according to Tesch’s eight steps of coding. Trustworthiness was ensured by using Lincoln and Guba’s framework which comprised credibility, transferability, dependability, confirmability and authenticity. Ethical principles such as beneficence and non-maleficence, respect for human dignity, justice, veracity, privacy and confidentiality were considered in the study. In phase two, the literature was searched by using an integrative literature review approach and critically appraising the methodological quality of the guidelines in order to identify the best available evidence related to adherence to ART. In Phase Three, a best-practice guideline for facilitating adherence to ART was developed for public hospitals in Ghana based on the findings of the empirical research of Phase One and the integrative literature review in Phase Two. The guideline was submitted to an expert panel for review; and it was modified, according to the recommendations of the panel.

Design-Based Research (DBR) was followed in this study, using a mixed-methods and iterative approach to determine the accuracy of the design theory. DBR produces a theoretical contribution and a practical artefact. The most important theoretical contributions are the design theory and guidelines for incorporating blended learning that accommodates multiple learning styles. The toolkit, which was accessed via a website, guides lecturers through the process of incorporating blended learning that accommodates multiple learning styles and provides them with the necessary tools to do so. This research is an investigation of how to improve the strategic management and operational efficiency of Enterprise Information Systems (EIS). A Business Process Management (BPM) framework was designed to integrate varying perspectives of organizational activities for wider collaboration and value derivation. The systematic methodology of Business process management (BPM) enables corporates to be more effective and efficient through continual process improvement. Elements used to build the BPM framework explain how to successfully derive value, inclusive of the performance indicators to measure outcomes. The model was tested with questionnaire data collected from corporates operating in the Southern African region and further refined based on Cronbach alpha reliability tests. The findings improve the interpretation of the determinants for the success of BPM and ERP IS from the user’s perspective. The results show that continuous improvement efforts and organisational support have positive influence on performance and validate the importance of quality, service, information, integration and workflow dependencies. Originality/value – This research extends prior work of BPM frameworks to follow up on customer orientation and servitization. Studies have not investigated relationship commitment between IT and operational business units. The relationship and interdependence of organisational functions is essential for Supply Chain value creation. Industrialization and information technology(IT) integration faces new opportunities. The agility of IT is further explored more into efforts of collaboration, structure, and innovation for future changes, emerging technologies and practices envisioned. This research seeks to propose a framework for the future development of smart supply chain, which can provide theory and case for intelligent operational activities with key technologies, such as RFID, Neural Networks, machine learning and artificial intelligence(AI).

BBWW in SA was established in 1998, and since then the number of permits available has doubled from 20 to 40. However, the establishment and past growth of the industry was undertaken without ecological research or impact assessments. Global research has shown that BBWW has the potential to cause short-term changes in cetacean behaviour and movement, which in turn can have long-term population-level consequences. National policies to grow ocean economies in SA may encourage excessive growth in the BBWW industry, impacting the ecological sustainability. In the absence of long-term impact data, the BBWW industry should be managed to minimise short-term changes. This study aimed to determine the social and ecological status of the SA BBWW industry, using Plettenberg Bay as a case study, to inform its long term sustainability. To achieve this aim: 1) the short-term behavioural and movement responses of six cetacean species to encounters with commercial BBWW vessels were measured; 2) the efficacy of three permit regulations (approach speed, approach angle, and encounter duration) to prevent short-term behavioural changes in three cetacean species was measured; 3) rates of compliance of BBWWoperators with current regulations were recorded; 4) BBWW tourists’ expectations of and satisfaction with the industry were investigated; as well as 5) operators’ views on the current permit regulations of the industry All research was conducted between September 2018 and November 2020 in Plettenberg Bay (SA) where two BBWW companies operating two vessels each are active. Festive, a division of Astral Foods, a poultry processing plant, attempted to implement the 20 Keys , a continuous improvement methodology, and it was no exception as it was added to the list of unsuccessful companies. Because of the failed attempt to implement 20 Keys at Festive and many other manufacturing businesses, which attempted to introduce CI initiatives but ultimately failed, factors such as management support, training, rewards and recognition and organisational culture have been revealed by the literature review as contributors to continuous improvement initiatives’ successful or unsuccessful implementation. A case study methodology was applied in this study to understand the real-life context of the failed implementation of Continuous Improvement at Festive. Furthermore, the lack of a rewards and recognition strategy, linked to continuous improvement goals, contributed to resistance to change in the culture and an inability to adapt to change. Misalignment between managers and staff regarding what contributes to successful continuous improvement initiatives, such as training, management involvement and rewards and recognition, was also found to be a contributor to the unsuccessful implementation of continuous improvement.

- Description: The aim of this study was to establish an understanding of the critical success factors of how to successfully implement and sustain continuous improvement projects at the Festive poultry processing plant using the 20 Keys continuous improvement (CI) tool. There are many continuous improvements in methodologies such as lean, 20 Keys , TQM and business process re-engineering. However, it has proven difficult for numerous businesses globally. Festive, a division of Astral Foods, a poultry processing plant, attempted to implement the 20 Keys , a continuous improvement methodology, and it was no exception as it was added to the list of unsuccessful companies. Because of the failed attempt to implement 20 Keys at Festive and many other manufacturing businesses, which attempted to introduce CI initiatives but ultimately failed, factors such as management support, training, rewards and recognition and organisational culture have been revealed by the literature review as contributors to continuous improvement initiatives’ successful or unsuccessful implementation. A case study methodology was applied in this study to understand the real-life context of the failed implementation of Continuous Improvement at Festive. Furthermore, it aimed to explore and explain complex causal links of training, rewards and recognition, organisational culture and management support which can positively impact the implementation of 20 Keys within the poultry processing industry or any manufacturing industry. A mixed method was followed through an online survey and in-depth interviews. The qualitative and quantitative data analysis results revealed that management support, training, rewards and recognition and organisational culture all were related and influenced continuous improvement implementation. Furthermore, companywide training, rewards and recognition proved to be the most significant challenge, resulting in the unsuccessful implementation of 20 Keys. The findings revealed that implementing continuous improvement is not immediate and entails all employees being adequately involved in the entire process from the start. The purpose of this research project was to investigate the validity of the claims that there has been an increase in the production of wool contaminated with medullated and coloured fibres. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to determine whether the incidence and extent of medullated and coloured fibres in the South African wool clip have changed over time. Secondly, the study aimed to determine whether the incidence and extent of medullated and coloured fibres have a distinct geographic distribution. This study explored eight years of wool production records (2010 to 2017) obtained from BKB, the largest wool broker in South Africa. For the purpose of this research, the wool-producing areas of South Africa were divided into 6 regions, according to average annual rainfall, vegetation type and major farming practices applied in the area. Statistical analysis of the data included descriptive statistics, analysis of variance and post-hoc tests, as well as regression analyses. This study succeeded in quantifying the extent and prevalence of contamination with medullated and coloured fibres in the South African wool clip. The overarching conclusions were: • Floating kemp is the most important contaminant of wool in South Africa, with the incidence of harsh kemp and coloured fibres being very low. • Generally, the most important areas that need attention in combatting contamination in the South African wool clip, are the Mixed Farming Summer Rainfall Region, the Semi-Arid Grassveld and the High Rainfall Grassland. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, School of Environmental Sciences, 2022
