- Description: On 19 May 2018 Ashwin Willemse, a coloured Springbok rugby player walked off the SuperSport set, a DSTV sports program, during a live broadcast. He accused his white co-hosts Nick Mallet and Naas Botha (two white apartheid-era Springboks) of patronising him (SABC News, 2018; Eyewitness News, 2018). Responses to the Willemse incident reflected racial divisions in the country. It appeared that many white South Africans criticised Willemse’s behaviour, while many black South Africans stated that they could identify with his response to the subtle racisms experienced in everyday life, and which he claimed to have experienced on the SuperSport program (SABC News, 2018; Eyewitness News, 2018). The racialised media outcry led Professor Jonathan Jansen, to ask: “why do two groups of people, staring at the same event ‘see’ two different realities” (Maleka, 2018: 4)? This thesis probes possible answers to Jonathan Jansen’s question regarding the Ashwin Willemse walkout. The thesis explores and analyses the diverse racialised responses to the ‘Willemse walkout’ through race theories and ‘coloniality of being’. Qualitative research methods were used in the form of a reception analysis involving two racially homogenous (black and white) focus group interviews, two in-depth individual interviews with black research participants, three in-depth individual interviews with white research participants, and a sample of tweets from black and white commentators who had opinions about the ‘Willemse walkout’. The thesis concludes that most black research participants supported Willemse’s actions and most of the white people in the group disagreed with Willemse’s behaviour. Often PSI are the result of multiple system failings that provide the necessary preconditions for the PSI to occur. Thus, to provide appropriate patient safety recommendations to address and aid in the prevention of future PSI it is necessary to apply a systems approach to PSI analysis. A systems approach supports a ‘bigger picture’ view of an incident which includes looking beyond the immediate causes of a PSI and taking the different levels of the healthcare system into consideration during incident analysis. Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE) is at its core a systems discipline and has been successfully applied to multiple fields including healthcare. HFE offers multiple incident analysis tools grounded in systems theory. The Life Esidimeni incident, a PSI that resulted in the death of 144 MHCU, is the biggest PSI in recent South African history and is therefore an important potential case study for the application of HFE systems tools within the South African healthcare context (an area that is lacking in existing literature). The objectives of this research were to (i) Systematically uncover the causal factors that led to the outcome of the of the Life Esidimeni incident; (ii) Identify critical faults, and gaps within the healthcare system that led to the Life Esidimeni PSI; and (iii) Provide proactive recommendations for future prevention of PSI. To fulfil these objectives a descriptive case study research method design was adopted using a qualitative systems-based tool, AcciMap. The application of AcciMap to Life Esidimeni enabled both the sharp end and blunt end causal factors that contributed to the outcome of the incident to be identified. Importantly this provided insight into the critical faults and gaps of the South African public healthcare system. The results of the AcciMap indicated that there were four main broad systemic faults in the system. These broad areas were categorized as key themes, which include: (i) competency, (ii) safeguards, (iii) time pressures, and (iv) vertical integration. - Description: This thesis analyses contemporary queer Nigerian fiction, particularly queer representations regarding law, religion and culture in Nigeria’s heteropatriarchal and queerphobic society. I explore a number of authors’ use of different literary forms and platforms to promote and represent non-conforming genders and sexualities in queerphobic Nigeria. These narratives show queer people navigating the heteronormative society vis-à-vis marriage, family, intimacy, work, violence and rights activism. I draw on Western and African gender and queer theories for the concepts, definitions and critical terminologies used in this thesis. African queer theorists and activists are highlighted for their reclaiming queer history from among the early records in Africa as well as contemporary queer Nigerian literature and activism. Religion and queerness are crucial themes in Chinelo Okparanta’s same sex women’s novel, Under the Udala Trees. Using queer African Christian theology against Nigeria’s conservative socio-religious setting, I demonstrate that queerness is not a threat to Nigerian’s Christian faith, and that mutual coexistence of queer sexuality and Christianity advances queer rights in that society. Nnanna Ikpo’s Fimí Sílẹ̀ Forever: Heaven gave it to me’s problematises heteronormative masculinities and the manufacturing of heteropatriarchy and queer masculinities in Nigeria. I examine the protagonists who are both victims of and perpetrators in their queerphobic society. The socio-legal focus I employ examines the impact of the 2014 Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act on Nigeria’s already marginalised and oppressed queer community. There are vast opportunities for queer Nigerian artists to create, publish and promote queer identities in the safe and enabling space of online platforms via physical distancing between the queer community and the queerphobic society. From the digitally published 14: An Anthology of Queer Art’s two volumes, five short stories are analysed regarding different forms of intimacies in queer men’s relationships. These queer contemporary fiction writers offer complex representations of queerness within Nigeria’s heteropatriarchal and queerphobic society that polices non-normative bodies through religion, culture and the law. Macroplastics in the environment: are they suitable habitats for macroinvertebrates in riverine systems?

- Description: Emerging pollutants, such as plastics are threat to freshwater ecosystems, and may negatively impact riverine systems. They can modify riverine habitats and affect aquatic organism distribution and composition. Knowledge of how macroplastics alter riverine habitat heterogeneity, and their effects on macroinvertebrate assemblage structure is sparse, especially in Africa. This study examines the effect of hydraulic biotopes on the colonisation, establishment and succession patterns of macroinvertebrates on macroplastic and natural substrates based on the taxonomic and trait-based approach. Four experimental sites from minimally impacted upper reaches of the Buffalo, Kat, Kowie, and Swartkops Rivers in the Eastern Cape of South Africa were selected for the deployment of plastic substrates. Plastics materials, including polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles and natural substrate composed of stone and vegetation, were used to formulate three substrate groups: Group 1: 100% natural substrates (NS), Group 2: 50% natural substrates and 50% plastic material (NP), and Group 3: 100% plastic materials (PD). These substrates were placed in litter bags of equal dimension (25 cm by 35 cm, with 2.5 cm mesh) and deployed randomly in three hydraulic biotopes (pools, riffles, runs) over a period of 180 days (October 2021 to April 2022). A total of 216 substrate bags, 54 bags per substrate were deployed per site in the four experimental sites. Twelve bags from each substrate group were retrieved at an interval of 30 days beginning on day 30 after deployment, and analysed for the establishment of macroinvertebrate communities. Based on composite hydraulic biotope data, Simpson index was significantly higher (P < 0.05) for macroinvertebrate assemblage structure on the 50% and 100% macroplastic substrate groups compared to natural substrates. With the exception of Tabanidae, Glossosomatidae, and Psephenidae, all macroinvertebrate taxa recorded showed non-significant positive correlations with all three substrate groups. However, Tabanidae, Glossosomatidae, and Psephenidae showed significant positive correlation with the 100% natural substrates, 50% plastic substrates and 100% plastic substrates, respectively. The parsimony analysis reveal that, within 30 days, all substrate groups underwent similar succession, with high abundance of pioneer taxa which increased on days 60 and 90, and then decreased from days 120 to 180. For the the pool biotope, Shannon and Simpson indices were significantly higher (P < 0.05) for the macroinvertabrates collected over the natural substates compared with those collected on the macroplastic substrate groups. However, in the riffle and run biotopes, all diversity indices were similar for all substrate groups and no statistically significant difference was observed. Statistically significant higher values for taxonomic richness, diversity, and evenness were found on day 30 to 90 for the riffle biotopes, and day 30 to 60 for the run biotopes. The run biotope presented temporal statistical significant variability in taxonomic composition with different macroinvertebrate communities recorded on days 30 and 60 compared with days 90 to 180. However, in pools and riffles, no temporal variation was observed in the taxonomic composition of macroinvertebrates on all three substrate groups. The trait-based fuzzy correspondence analysis revealed differential spatial-temporal distribution of macroinvertebrate traits on all three substrate group. The early colonisers i.e. day 30 – 60, were dominated by group of taxa characterised by medium (>10 – 20 mm) and large (20 > 40) body size, flat body, collector-gatherers, free-living, and predators. The late colonisers, collected mainly on day 150 and 180 were dominated by taxa with a preference for high flow velocity (0.3 - 0.6 m/s), permanent attachment, and filter-feeding mode. Traits such as oval and flat body shape, medium body size (>10 - 20 mm), skating and clinging/climbing mobility, temporal attachment, shredders, predators, prey, and plastron and spiracle respiration showed positive correlation with the 100% macroplastic substrates. Filter feeding, crawling, permanent attachment, a preference for fast velocity (0.3-0.6 m/s), and coarse particle organic matter were positively correlated with the 50% macroplastic substrates. Overall, the results provided critical insights on the impact of macroplastics on the assemblage structure of biological communities by acting as suitable habitats in stream ecosystems. The study elucidated the role of traits of aquatic organisms in mediating the colonisation of plastics substrates, providing insights into the impact of plastics proliferation on riverine ecosystem functioning. However, Tabanidae, Glossosomatidae, and Psephenidae showed significant positive correlation with the 100% natural substrates, 50% plastic substrates and 100% plastic substrates, respectively. The parsimony analysis reveal that, within 30 days, all substrate groups underwent similar succession, with high abundance of pioneer taxa which increased on days 60 and 90, and then decreased from days 120 to 180. For the the pool biotope, Shannon and Simpson indices were significantly higher (P < 0.05) for the macroinvertabrates collected over the natural substates compared with those collected on the macroplastic substrate groups. However, in the riffle and run biotopes, all diversity indices were similar for all substrate groups and no statistically significant difference was observed. Statistically significant higher values for taxonomic richness, diversity, and evenness were found on day 30 to 90 for the riffle biotopes, and day 30 to 60 for the run biotopes. The run biotope presented temporal statistical significant variability in taxonomic composition with different macroinvertebrate communities recorded on days 30 and 60 compared with days 90 to 180. However, in pools and riffles, no temporal variation was observed in the taxonomic composition of macroinvertebrates on all three substrate groups. The trait-based fuzzy correspondence analysis revealed differential spatial-temporal distribution of macroinvertebrate traits on all three substrate group. The early colonisers i.e. day 30 – 60, were dominated by group of taxa characterised by medium (>10 – 20 mm) and large (20 > 40) body size, flat body, collector-gatherers, free-living, and predators. The late colonisers, collected mainly on day 150 and 180 were dominated by taxa with a preference for high flow velocity (0.3 - 0.6 m/s), permanent attachment, and filter-feeding mode. Traits such as oval and flat body shape, medium body size (>10 - 20 mm), skating and clinging/climbing mobility, temporal attachment, shredders, predators, prey, and plastron and spiracle respiration showed positive correlation with the 100% macroplastic substrates. Filter feeding, crawling, permanent attachment, a preference for fast velocity (0.3-0.6 m/s), and coarse particle organic matter were positively correlated with the 50% macroplastic substrates. Overall, the results provided critical insights on the impact of macroplastics on the assemblage structure of biological communities by acting as suitable habitats in stream ecosystems. The study elucidated the role of traits of aquatic organisms in mediating the colonisation of plastics substrates, providing insights into the impact of plastics proliferation on riverine ecosystem functioning. Although the side effects of modern contraceptives on women's clinical and physiological variables are well known, studies examining the associations between contraceptive use and physical and psychosocial variables such as physical activity (PA), depression, and quality of life (QoL) in non-athletic Nigerian women of reproductive age are scarce. This study aimed to examine the associations between contraceptive use, PA, depression, and QoL among non-athletic women of childbearing age in Akure South Local Government, Ondo State, Nigeria. Methods: In a descriptive cross-sectional study, 646 women of childbearing age were recruited using the multistage sampling technique. The data of 496 current contraceptive users and 146 non-users were analysed, as 4 respondents did not respond regarding current contraceptive use status. The Global PA Questionnaire (GPAQ), Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI) and World Health QoL Organization Quality of Life Brief (WHOQoL BREF) were used to assess respondents’ scores/levels of PA, depression and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The GPAQ, BDI, and WHOQOL scores were compared between contraceptive users and non-users using non-parametric Quade Analysis of Covariance while age, married status, tribe, religion, and occupation were included covariates. PA, sedentary behaviour (SB), and BDI scores were categorized using guidelines. Contraceptive use/practice was the outcome variable. Pearson's chi-square test bivariate analysis and a multivariate logistic model were used to identify factors associated with contraceptive use (users and non-users). Crude and adjusted odds ratios and their confidence intervals were calculated to determine the significance of the association. The regression model was adjusted for age, marital status, religion, tribe, highest education level, occupation, awareness of contraceptives, current use, lifetime use, type, class, and duration of current contraception. “Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: The mean age of the respondents was 29.73±6.10 years. The contraceptive users and non-users were not significantly different regarding their ages (p = 0.135), marital status (p = 0.245), highest education (p = 0.444), occupation (p = 0.238), and tribe (p = 0.192). The respondents’ lifetime and point prevalence of contraceptive uptake was 93.6% and 77.3%, respectively, while 72 (12.8%) reported experiencing contraception-related side effects. Of the 496 respondents who currently practice contraception, 146 (29.4%) were hormonal contraceptive users. The majority of the respondents had moderate and mild levels of PA (48.5%) and depression (51.4%), respectively, and a significantly higher proportion of contraceptive users had minimal and moderate depression levels than the non-users (p = 0.018). The contraceptive users demonstrated significantly higher median scores of BDI (p = 0.02), Physical health QoL (p < 0.001), environment QoL (p = 0.033) and overall QoL (0.004) than the non-users. Hormonal contraceptive users had significantly higher median PA walking/bicycling scores than non-hormonal users (p = 0.014). Respondents with mild and moderate depression levels had higher odds of being contraceptive users than those with minimal depression (AOR = 3.12, 95% CI = 1.43 – 6.80, p = 0.04 and 4.67, 95% CI = 1.92 – 11.36, p = 0.001 respectively). Conclusion: Contraceptive use is negatively associated with depression but positively related to Physical health, environment and overall domains of HRQoL. The writer's interest in this phenomenon grew out of her own experience of this situation as a clinical Masters coursework student, an experience which was of important to the writer and meaningful still as a therapist in training. In dialogue with experienced therapists the importance of this situation was again made apparant. It was the opinion of these therapists that although for some the details of this experience had become dulled by time, what remained meaningful to them was that this experience was seen as the beginning of a project which remains important to them - they identified this situation as an important moment in the history of their development as psychotherapists. In the hope that the literature pertaining to psychotherapy would throw some light on this situation, the writer turned to a number of sources in this area to discover that no literature available to her elucidated this situation in a holistic manner. This led the writer to go back to the beginning therapists themselves so that they may speak for themselves of their experience of this situation. A phenomenological method of enquiry is implemented in this study as it renders the subject matter accessible to investigation, and allows it to reveal itself as it essentially is. Thermal physiology of juvenile red roman seabream, Chrysoblephus laticeps after long-term exposure to low pH conditions

Organismal energy budgets change throughout ontogeny and research into the metabolic scope during early life stages is particularly useful in identifying potential bottlenecks. The first part of this thesis aimed to assess the absolute aerobic scope (AAS, described as the difference between the maximum and standard metabolic rates) of individual juveniles from a protected population of the endemic, commercially important seabream, Chrysoblephus laticeps, across a range of ecologically relevant temperatures (T = 11, 14, 18, 22˚C) under present-day conditions (pH = 8.03, pCO2 ≈ 420 μatm) using intermittent flow respirometry. The second component sought to investigate how long-term exposure (from fertilisation to juvenile, ~100 days exposure) to high-pCO2/hypercapnic conditions (pH = 7.63, pCO2 ≈ 1400 μatm), would affect the AAS of juvenile C. laticeps over a range of temperatures. Lower pH conditions were predicted to cause a decrease in the AAS of treatment animals due to additional energetic costs of acid-base regulation. The findings of the first data chapter demonstrated that juvenile C. laticeps reared under current CO2 conditions are tolerant to a wide range of thermal conditions, and individuals with a broad aerobic scope will be the best suited to coping with enhanced thermal variability. In contrast to the expected outcomes of the second data chapter, juvenile C. laticeps reared under high pCO2 conditions displayed greater AAS at high and low temperatures when compared with specimens from high pH conditions. Whilst a high degree of individual phenotypic variation was observed in the metabolic response of both groups, this was reduced at the lower and upper extreme temperatures for high pH and low pH animals respectively. Notably, the variation in treatment animal’s SMR was significantly diminished across all temperatures tested, compared to only a localised reduction in the SMR of high pH animals at cold temperatures. This may be indicative of compensatory pathways affecting energy restructuring and thermally-governed physiological trade-offs under hypercapnia. Given these results, juvenile C. laticeps appear to be more resilient to ocean acidification than anticipated, potentially owing to intrapopulation metabolic phenotypic diversity. This is likely attributed to the parental lineage originating in the Tsitsikamma MPA, which is thought to boast greater phenotypic diversity as a consequence of the refuge that these conservation areas offer from exploitation. Owing to the restriction imposed by the availability of surviving, captive-reared juveniles, the sample size used in this study was relatively low. However, owing to the repeated-measures nature of this research the sample size was sufficient to offer suitable statistical power for the polynomial mixed model used in the analysis. Future research should incorporate both physiological and behavioural responses to multiple environmental stressors to better understand covariation between these two traits, and to detect any behavioural trade-offs that might arise through compensation. Using a sample of 18 clients, who underwent psychotherapy at the Rhodes Psychology Clinic during 1990, a follow-up study was conducted to ascertain the perceived success of that psychotherapy. Those variables most pertinent to the outcome of psychotherapy are examined. The study uses both qualitative and quantitative methodology and shows that, overall, 89% of the clients who participated in this study perceived the psychotherapy at the Rhodes Psychology Clinic to be satisfactory. Through interrogating Eastern Cape archival institutes and employing an autoethnographic approach to my familial archives, I show that archival curation affects the gaps, schisms, and interpretations of archives as much as the ‘unreliability’ of memory. I rely on definitions from Jacques Derrida and literature from Achille Mbembe and Verne Harris, as well as reflexive methodologies, to engage the ways of remembering the past and methods of storytelling. With this undertaking, I expose the aporias within archival processes. This written component is part of broader research that encompasses theoretical study and a practice-based Fine Arts research project culminating in an exhibition that shares themes of memory, archive, trauma, and curatorial and personal heritage management. In South Africa, the prevalence of type 2 Diabetes mellitus is currently estimated at 9.0% in people aged 30 and older and is expected to increase. Diabetes-related complications result in acute alterations in the mental state due to poor metabolic control as well as greater rates of decline in cognitive functioning with age, higher prevalence of depression and increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia in older adults and possibly contributes to 60 - 70% of cases. Alzheimer’s disease remains incurable, its progression inevitable with the currently available symptomatic therapies being palliative while the treatment of diabetes relies on insulin preparations and other glucose-lowering agents. Current treatment options have numerous side effects such as hypoglycaemia, diarrhoea, weight gain and abnormal liver function. This has geared the investigation of new generations of small molecules which exhibit improved efficacy and safety profiles. On this basis, several studies have shown that thiazolidinediones and their corresponding derivatives exhibit a broad spectrum of biological activities including anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities. Furthermore, recent evidence from experimental, epidemiological, and clinical studies highlight the utility of antioxidants for treating diabetes and its complications. Interestingly, there is increasing evidence that links diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease due to their pathophysiology and suppressing glycaemia has been shown to be beneficial in Alzheimer’s disease treatment. Accordingly, the aim of this study, was to evaluate the anti-diabetic and anti-Alzheimer’s properties of four novel synthesized thiazolidinedione-derivatives owing to their antioxidant properties. Methods The aim of this study was achieved through performing ferric reducing antioxidant power activity, 2,2’-Diphenyl-1-Picry Hydrazyl radical scavenging activity, α-amylase inhibition, α-glucosidase inhibition, aldose reductase inhibition, protein tyrosine phosphatase-1B inhibition, dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibition, acetylcholinesterase inhibition, matrix metalloproteinase-1 inhibition, and β-amyloid aggregation inhibition assays. In addition, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ activation was performed through docking studies. To establish physicochemical properties of TZD derivatives investigated, further in-silico studies were done using SwissADME tools. Results To this end, in-vitro and in-silico studies were successfully performed. In-silico ADME profiling predicted these derivatives to be drug-like with moderate to good solubility in the GI and not blood-brain barrier permeable. Furthermore, docking of these molecules against PPARγ predicted a similar mode of action to that of thiazolidinediones using Rosiglitazone as the standard drug with TZDD2 and TZDD4 forming equivalent conformations to that of Rosiglitazone in the same binding site and TZDD3 having an equivalent LBE to that of Rosiglitazone (-8.84 and -8.63kcal/mol respectively). In-vitro evaluation predicted a moderate antioxidant activity with TZDD2 and 3 exhibiting the highest FRAP activity and DPPH radical scavenging activity. Furthermore, enzymatic inhibition assays showed a relative inhibition activity with TZDD3 exhibited > 100% inhibition in concentrations ≥ 30 μg/mL and TZDD1, 2 and 4 exhibited ≥ 50% inhibition activity in all the concentrations (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 μg/mL) in the α-amylase inhibition assay. Constraints on Cr-PGE Mineralisation Models: Geochemical and petrological studies in the Middle Group 1 and 3 Chromitites, Western Limb, Bushveld Complex, South Africa

- Description: The Bushveld Complex in South Africa has been of interest in various research groups for decades, along with diverse theories regarding its origin, formation, and emplacement. These theories include magma mixing, contamination, and changes in the chamber's ephemeral parameters. Of interest for our current study is the formation of the middle group chromitite layers in the Western Limb. In this research, we aimed to determine the emplacement mechanism of the MG group chromitites by scrutinising the MG 1 and MG 3 layers. In core KD 151, the focus was placed on the MG 3 and MG 1 chromitite layers and their associated silicate rocks; on these regions of the core, time was spent for detailed observations. The differences and similarities of these layers were explored as the study advanced. The objectives were to determine the in-situ or proximal crystallisation of the chromitite by evaluating mineral textures and compositions. This required that we determine the characteristics of the immediate HW (hanging wall) and FW (footwall) to these chromitites, with insights into the relationship that anorthositic zones may offer and examine the PGE profiles of the chromitites in contrasting lithological settings. The sampled borehole was in the Western Limb of the Bushveld Complex; the immediate HW, chromitite layers and FW were divided into sections (2.5 x 5 cm) along selected horizons for a microscale study. The preliminary results of a study on the sub-economic Middle Group (MG) layers within the Critical Zone (CZ), contrasting the MG 1 (Lower CZ) and MG 3 (Upper CZ) chromitite layers of the Rustenburg Layered Suite of the Bushveld Complex, South Africa were analysed. The MG 3 and 1 suites of silicate rocks show disequilibrium textures between the pyroxenes and plagioclase, forming discontinuous olivine rims. These reaction rims are interpreted as products of magmatic aqueous fluid-facilitated reactions with minerals in a sub-solidus state. Deformation of the plagioclase was also noted in MG 1; this fracturing indicates either the transportation of these minerals or compaction by an overlying crystal mush. The MG 3 package of plagioclase, pyroxene and chromite compositions range from An67-78, En71-86 and Cr# of 68-84, respectively. The MG 1 package of plagioclase, pyroxene and chromite compositions are An64-91, En79-88 and Cr# of 70-80, respectively. The Cu/Pd ratio decreases from the base of the FW as it approaches the base of the chromitite, then remains low within the chromitite layer and finally increases upwards in the HW. These trends are observed in both the MG 3 and 1 package, therefore not influenced by the sulphide control. There is a decrease in both IPGE and PPGE upwards as the HW progresses into the chromitite. The FW levels of Ir and Ru increase upwards immediately adjacent to the FW contact, while Pd and Rh concentrations decrease. The whole-rock Mg# indicates a decrease in the MG 3 with a uniform increase in the HW and an erratic upward increase observed in the FW. The chondrite normalised PGE plots show a bell-shaped curve which is evident for the En content of the pyroxenes and the content of plagioclase with the highest values in the chromitite layer itself. The Cr# of the chromite decreases upwards with the highest values along the FW. The Cu/Pd ratio for MG 1 indicates chromitite control rather than sulphide control of the PGE. The whole-rock Mg# decreases in MG 1 with higher uniform values observed in the HW and FW. The geochemical and petrological data from the MG group study revealed that in situ fractional crystallisation seems unlikely as the sole mechanism for their formation in the CZ. It is in this light that this study examined the inclusion of opportunities for environmental education (EE)1 embedded in the Grade 11-12 Geography curriculum in the Namibian context. This study is undertaken as a case study of two schools in the Omusati region in northern Namibia. It investigated opportunities for EE that are embedded in the Geography curriculum using action competence as a lens to review the curriculum and how teachers are working with it in two rural school contexts. This study employed qualitative methods, specifically semi-structured interviews, an analysis of curriculum documents, classroom observations and focus group interviews. Ethical issues were taken into consideration throughout the study. The key findings from the study are: 1. The specification of EE has mainly emerged as a series of concerns that present as topics to be taught and compared with similar concerns in other parts of the world; 2. Teachers have little experience of what and how to teach and inform environmental education within their classrooms; 3. Learners are not actively involved in seeking and probing environmental concerns or in seeking solutions to these. These findings have been used to make recommendations that teachers: 1. Revisit and review the curriculum documents to carry theory into classroom practice; 2. Encourage learners’ participation to enhance their interest and emotional responsibility in environmental education. The study concludes by calling for further research into EE in Geography. Research conducted on traditional healing estimates that as high as 80% of black individuals in South Africa choose to consult traditional healers. Although there was initial consensus that the use of traditional healers reflected a lack of access to alternative resources, more recent research has however indicated that traditional healers are consulted even when psychiatric facilities and medication are available. Research has illustrated that many patients that chose to consult traditional healers do so as a result of their shared beliefs, and traditional healers' ability to understand the cultural frameworks underlying illness. The current study investigated how traditional healers in the Eastern Cape perceive and treat phenomena currently understood as the symptoms of depression and how these understandings can be incorporated into collaborations between Western medicine and traditional healing practice. A qualitative research design was used to examine the perspectives and treatment methods of isiXhosa traditional healers in the Eastern Cape. Four healers participated in the study. Key findings indicated that there is no single cause or definition of the phenomenon of depression by healers. Causality is greatly attributed to spiritual causes and ancestors play a key role in guiding the diagnosis and multiple treatment interventions employed by healers to treat the experience of depression. Its importance lies in scaffolding mathematical understanding, improving the quality of assessment, and developing twenty-first-century technological skills for effective mathematics assessment. To explore this importance, senior phase mathematics teachers are encouraged to adopt gamification technology such as Kahoot! in assessment. The study adopted a case study research design with a interpretivist research paradigm, as this method allows detailed exploration and understanding of a specific context through a close connection with the participants. Data was collected using semi-structured questionnaires, focus group interviews, non-participant observations, and reflective journals. The research involved ten purposively selected senior-phase mathematics teachers from two schools in the Sarah Baartman District, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. The study drew upon Vygoysky's Sociocultural Theory for its theoretical framework, while the Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge was used for analysis. The data analysis pursued an inductive approach. Adopting a thematic analysis included coding participant responses, organizing codes into concepts and categories, and developing a theoretical framework from the resultant categories. A four-phase process was involved: coding, conceptualizing, categorizing, and theorizing, was employed. This process and using NVivo software for data organization and management helped identify patterns, themes, and significant concerns surrounding the study's core subject. The findings from the study were as follows: Firstly, it was revealed that most teachers have a positive perception and attitude towards using Kahoot! for formative assessment, believing that it enhances teaching and learning quality. However, they showed scepticism due to insufficient Information and Communication Technologies knowledge and training. Second, teachers' pedagogical and technological experiences were predominantly enjoyable. Kahoot! was accepted as beneficial for promoting collaboration, interaction, and immediate feedback. Third, the study identified enabling and constraining factors in using Kahoot! for formative assessment. The enabling factors include Kahoot!, which was convenient and accessible, promoted immediate feedback and fostered collaboration and interaction. The constraining factors include Information and Communication Technologies and network interference, which posed limitations. The research concluded that Kahoot! as a platform for formative assessment indeed scaffold mathematical understanding. The study recommends increasing teachers' access to educational technology, incorporating continuous professional development programs, providing subject-specific training, and encouraging teachers to adapt to emerging technologies. - Description: Invasion by alien plant species in South Africa continues to compromise the stability of ecosystems by causing declines in biodiversity, altering soil nutrients and processes, and subsequently transforming ecosystem functionality. Control of invasive alien plant species has been widely implemented in South Africa to minimize their negative impacts; however, the legacy effects can persist long after the plant has been removed. The impacts of Acacia dealbata clearing on soil properties and native vegetation recovery remains understudied despite their significance in ecological restoration and monitoring. This comparative study determined the impacts of A. dealbata clearing on both soil physicochemical properties and vegetation in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Soils were collected from three different clearing treatments, namely, cleared, invaded, and uninvaded, on 5 m x 5 m plots over three summer months. The plots were replicated four times for each clearing treatment, making a total of 72 sampling plots. Soils were assessed for soil pH, resistivity, P, C, N, and exchangeable cations as well as soil moisture content, penetration resistance, infiltration rate, hydraulic conductivity, and water repellency. Clearing of A. dealbata did not have any significant effects on most soil nutrients, however, there were variations in soil pH, resistance, and Na. Soil pH was significantly higher in the uninvaded treatments than in the cleared and invaded treatments. Soil moisture content was significantly higher in the cleared treatments than the adjacent invaded and uninvaded treatments, but this was observed in the month of December only. Soil penetration resistance and infiltration rates were significantly higher in the month of December in the cleared treatments. For all clearing treatments, no significant differences were recorded for soil hydraulic conductivity. These results on changes in soil properties following A. dealbata clearing are varied, with some soil properties showing decreases, an indication that removal of A. dealbata has the potential to shift soil properties towards a positive recovery trajectory. This study further assessed whether the clearing of A. dealbata facilitates the recovery of native plant species. Vegetation surveys were conducted in the three above-mentioned treatments and plots. Results showed little recruitment of native grasses and forbs, but the persistence of A. dealbata seedlings in the cleared treatments. Species richness and Shannon-Wiener diversity index were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in the cleared and invaded treatments than the uninvaded treatments, and this was more visible for trees and shrubs. Cover for all species was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the uninvaded than the cleared and invaded treatments. This study observed the recruitment of some native species in the cleared treatments that were not present in the invaded treatments. Therefore, the recruitment and establishment of some native species, mostly grasses, in the cleared treatments gives assurance that passive restoration is on a positive vegetation recovery trajectory that can lead to recovery of native vegetation after A. dealbata clearing. Therefore, the study concludes that investing in ecological restoration after alien plant clearing is a necessity for complete ecosystem recovery to be achieved. Overall, the study concludes that the removal of A. dealbata triggers changes to some soil properties. Similarly, the study observed recruitment of some native grasses in cleared areas, an indication that alien plant clearing facilitates changes in both soil properties and vegetation. However, soil and vegetation recovery are being hampered by the regrowth of A. dealbata and secondary invaders that were observed in the cleared treatments.
