  • Description: "When Serenje's father died, he mourned for a long time. "Toranchi" has taught me how to shoot on the rifle range, so, now I have learnt to shoot, I may be going to the war, and do not know if I will ever come back." This is a piece of fantasy, for in fact, Mr. Torrence has not taught him to shoot, but it is an oblique form of flattery and praise. He is fond of Mr. Torrence who is assistant African personnel manager, and that is why he sings about him in this way. The fact that Mr. Torrence was an officer in the King's African Rifles during the war may have contributed to the singer's hero worship of him.   • Description: The leader of this Timbila Orchestra is a well known player and composer, Hafu Kumbani, who has a large number of new Timbila tunes to his credit. The title Bandametu womgeniso appears to be commonly used by the eastern rather than the western Chopi. The Chopi clans which live to the east of the main body of the tribe of the Inhambane District and to speak a distinctive dialect. Those who know the Chopi well, claim that this can also be detected in the style of their plyaing and dancing and in the tunings of their Timbila xylophones. Regulo Nyankowango is considered to be one of the minor chiefs under Regulo Mikumbi of the Inharrime District. Living as they do to the east of the central Chopi, their dialect is distinctive and influenced by the GiTonga of the Inhambane District. Movement from the Ngodo xylophone orchestral dance of Regulo Nyankowongo with 14 xylophones, 2 rattles and one horn.

  • Description: For this recording, the drums performed alone without the singing, but on occasion with the whistles in the background provided by the dancers. Each of the 3 drums can be heard separately with its distinctive tune, the Akanono, the Cimbulunge, and the Fwanda-fwanda, each of which has a fairly complex rhythm and tone pattern to add to the whole resultant. It would appear that the Lala style of drumming are among the most evolved in N. Rhodesia. The stick, as in common in this region adds a percussive rhythm of its own and is beaten on to the body of one of the drums adding to the general welter of sound.
