- Description: The value of waste as a resource, diverting waste from landfills and the need for a circular economy, was emphasised at the South African and European Colloquium on recycling hosted by PETCO, the polyethylene terephthalate company (Godfrey, 2013, p. 17). In South Africa, the recycling industry is seen as a means to provide income and skills development, and to create sustainable livelihoods. Yet, the country remains deeply entrenched in landfilling (Godfrey, 2013, p. 19). According to Zhang, Huang, Yin and Gong (2015, p. 9475) “understanding the factors that affect residents’ waste separation behaviours helps in constructing effective environmental campaigns for the community”. The focus of a waste management system should be to motivate and convince the consumer to dispose of their waste in a sustainable manner. The waste separation decision is complex and can be explained by the theory of planned behaviour and theory of reasoned action (Nguyen, Nguyen, Lobo & Dao, 2017, p. 2). The aim of this study is to identify and evaluate the factors that influence the waste separation behaviour of households in the Uitenhage area. In order to achieve this aim, secondary research (literature review) and primary research (empirical study) were conducted. The study has shown that if the residents are presented with free containers and have access to a collection service which facilitates the flow of the recyclables from the point of consumption to the point of sustainable disposal and conversion, it could motivate them to separate the waste. The only variable that was found significant in relation to household waste separation behaviour was motivation. The respondents are motivated to separate their household waste; yet, they do not separate it. The frequency distribution analysis reported that the sample was not experienced waste separators, where less than half of the sample was engaged in some waste separation activities. Yet, the respondents had a positive attitude towards the importance of waste separation and disagreed that waste separation is inconvenient. The majority of the respondents agreed that they have control over their behaviour and that the decision to separate their waste is within their control, but yet they do not separate their waste. The respondents agreed that they have the knowledge of what and how to separate waste, however, disagreed that they know where to take their separated waste. Interestingly, the respondents agreed that waste separation is The determinants of waste separation behaviour in Uitenhage, South Africa part of their moral norms; yet, they do not consider family and friends, including the municipality, to exert social pressure on them to separate their household waste. It is recommended that the municipality investigates the requirements for implementing a waste management scheme which provides containers for free and collects separated waste from households. Entrepreneurs can also play a pivotal role in bridging the gap in the waste management supply chain by establishing buy-back centres and sustainable recycling depots to facilitate the collection of separated waste for recycling. These collection services, buy-back centres and recycling depots present business opportunities and job creation potential, which will drive the economic growth in the Nelson Mandela Bay area.

The utility of vertical farming for urban renewal: an integrated business model for profitable and sustainable vegetation production

This accelerated population growth and associated increase in food demand, coupled with the trend of decreasing productive agricultural land, present a calamitous food security risk for future generations. The ensuing expansion of agricultural land to supply this food demand leads to irreversible environmental damage including encroachment, climate change and biodiversity extinction. Moreover, rapid urbanisation of the aforementioned over-populace leads to mass unemployment in many major cities and widespread suburbanisation. The concurrence of the latter and former trends creates pockets of urban brown space, unutilised and dilapidated areas that have various consequences. Vertical farming is a system of cultivating crops or food products in buildings, tall structures or vertically inclined surfaces. If applied correctly this method results in substantial increases in crop yield, environmental benefits and reduced pressure on agricultural land. The research problem in this study was to establish how the vertical farming business model can be integrated with urban renewal of brown space to enable profitable and sustainable vegetation production. In order to achieve this objective the following research process was followed: Identification of the factors pertinent for the examination of urban gentrification, vertical farming and business model implementation through the literature review; Identification of approaches for integrating vertical farming applications with urban renewal activities and collective insights from the review of relevant literature; Development of a semi-structured interview guide from the literature review, to determine the extent of perceived utility of vertical farming for revitalisation and to gain valuable insights into strategies for integrating the model; Conducting an empirical study consisting of face-to-face interviews with subject matter experts and/or individuals with experience in the case scope, that were selected through purposive sampling as defined in the research methodology chapter; and Amalgamation and synthesis of the results to develop a proposed integrated model that can be used for urban renewal to create businesses that not only gentrify the urban brown space but that are profitable and provide sustainable development value to the city where it is based. The empirical results obtained from the interviews with respondents were analysed and included in the conceptual framework developed from the examination of secondary data sources. This led to the development of the integrated business model for urban renewal and achievement of the research objectives. The main findings from the research centred on customer segmentation strategy, distribution channels and gentrification through key partnerships. The intricacies of the integrated model and its application are discussed in detail in this research paper.

The identification and resolution of social needs is said to be the driving force of social innovation. With features such as sustainability and scalability, social innovation has the potential to change the way we perceive and engage with development in the future. This research takes a critical look at how the social needs as a means to an end of social innovation, is identified. Previous research did not investigate the methodology of how these needs were identified and the question then arose as to how responsive the corresponding resolutions could be in resolving the need. Interviews were conducted with the founders of organisations that were considered socially innovative. Each founder was asked to detail the processes that took place in the social need identification that their respective organisation sought to resolve along with their personal journey towards becoming a founder, to gain a rich understanding of what shaped their approach to need identification. Organisations that were most critically responsive to the social needs identified were those that either 1) personally experienced deprivation of a social need in their own lives, or 2) had extensive engagement and exposure to individuals who had personally experienced the deprivation of a social need. It was evident that both the identification and corresponding resolution of social needs for social innovation require an approach that holds experiencers of the deprivation at the nucleus of the resolution. This methodology needs to be incorporated in the theory of social innovation and implemented in practice.

As a result,change objectives are not met and employees are left with a poor change experience. Research objective: The main objective of the study was therefore to determine the extent to which the organisational culture of a selected South African Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) organisation was ready for change, and supported goal alignment, team work, a customer focus and employee talent optimisation to attain desired Change Outcomes. Research design: The study adopted a quantitative method using a random sample method and survey as the data collecting instrument, which was administered to employees at a selected ICT organisation. Factor analysis resulted in a refinement of the initial cultural elements investigated. Main findings/results: The results revealed that the ICT organisation did reflect a customer orientation, change readiness, collaboration for continuous improvement and an environment that enabled performance, but that there was room for improvement. The results indicated that the respondents had doubts about whether the Change Outcomes were attained. All the cultural factors correlated positively with each other and positively correlated with Change Outcomes. A significant positive link was found between Collaboration for Continuous Innovation and Change Outcomes. Practical/managerial implications: Organisational change requires much effort from senior leaders, managers and employees and it is therefore more likely that, during change, attention will be focused on operational changes rather than on organisational culture. However, the study demonstrated that culture in general is very important, as it influences behaviour and provides identity to employees, and that culture is especially important during a period of change. During a period of change, culture can either enhance or hinder change. In addition, change often implies a change in culture. The study showed that during a period of change, team work is very important and that opportunities must be created for sharing ideas, collaboration and stretching goals, thus for innovation, and for finding better ways to serve customers.

- Description: In a world characterised by globalisation, particularly increased financial integration and capital mobility, international economic theory stipulates that countries rather maintain a floating exchange rate system than a fixed exchange rate system in order to have less susceptibility to currency crises (Glick & Hutchison, 2011). South Africa, the economic powerhouse of Africa, is an interesting case to examine. It has a floating exchange rate and should thus be more resistant to currency crises due to market adjustment expectations that limit the build-up of pressure in its foreign exchange markets. South Africa’s foreign exchange market is characterised as volatile with recurring turbulent periods with currency crises observed in 1996, 1998, 2001 and 2008, of which the 2007/2008 global financial crisis was the worst the world had experienced since the Great Depression of the 1930s and it had a significant, negative impact on the South African economy and certainly exposed the country’s vulnerably (South African Reserve Bank, 2012). Having experienced these periods of currency crisis in South Africa and with no specific tool adequately tested and developed for the South African economy to accurately detect such an event before its occurrence, this research was an attempt to fill this gap within the economics discipline. The purpose of this thesis was to examine and make use of Early Warning System (EWS) models to ascertain which one best identifies potential early warning signs of a currency crisis in South Africa. To achieve this, the study tested two standard and commonly used EWS models, namely the Signals and probit models. Added to these approaches, two newer EWS models, namely the Markov regime switching model and the artificial neural networks model were tested. To date only two studies on EWS models for currency crises have been conducted in South Africa. Knedlik (2006) used the signals approach and Knedlik and Scheufele (2007) used the signals, probit/logit and Markov regime switching approaches. Both studies recommended that further research was needed. With this in mind, this thesis built on these studies by extending the sample period under observation from 1993/02 to 2017/03 to fully capture the probability of the global financial crisis of 2007/2008. This study separated the sample period into two parts, a first period (1993/02 – 2004/12) catering for the July 1998 and December 2001 crises and a second period (2005/01 – 2017/03) catering for the October 2008 crisis. This was done to separately observe how well the models detected early warning signs of the October 2008 crisis due to its global nature. By exploring the potential of artificial intelligence by employing the non-parametric approach of artificial neural networks, which has not yet been applied in the South African context for the probability prediction of currency crises, and comparing its prediction performance to the signals, the probit and the Markov regime switching EWS models, this thesis fills an existing information gap. This study found that of these four EWS models for predicting the probabilities of currency crises within the 24-month crisis window, the signals model performed better than the other models for the period 1993/02 – 2004/12. However, the final-outcome of the best model in probability prediction of South African currency crises is not straightforward for this period, as the artificial neural network model and Markov regime switching model performed almost as well as the signals model. During the period 2005/01 – 2017/03, the artificial neural networks model outperformed the other three models in capturing the global financial crisis of 2007/2008, specifically with regard to the evaluations of the percentage of pre-crisis periods called correctly and the percentage of tranquil periods called correctly. - Description: The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) is a new phenomenon that will impact human society drastically. It is complex, highly dynamic and constantly evolving at an everincreasing pace. To date the majority of research on the topic of the 4IR is focused on technological and scientific topics, with little to no work done on the human behavioural aspects such as intelligence. At the commencement of this paper only one other author published papers on the intelligences that are required to cope with the disruption associated with the 4IR. This paper is therefore the first known study paper which aims to determine the level of physical-, contextual-, emotional- and inspired intelligence of engineers in the South African automotive industry. Two comprehensive literature reviews were performed in this study. The first literature review aimed to create the context of this study by describing the historical significance, impact, drivers, critical emerging technologies and likely manufacturing scenarios of the 4IR. The second literature review investigated the theories of intelligence including the single factor approach as well as the theory of multiple intelligences. Additionally, the 4IR intelligence proposition is described and the application thereof in this study justified. A mixed method empirical study, consisting of 101 respondents, was conducted. Descriptive statistics were used to comprehensively describe the level of awareness, timeframe, emerging technologies and likely manufacturing scenarios. Furthermore, the thematic analysis of open-ended responses was used to identify the potential positive and negative implications associated with the 4IR. After the level and importance of the four intelligence components were established, inferential statistical tests were performed to establish the relationship between the four intelligences as well as to identify any deviance in the responses based on demographic variables. The study concludes by making various managerial recommendations that could be applied by managers in the automotive sector in order for their companies to survive and prosper in the disruption to be caused by the 4IR. As it is clear that the 4IR will have an impact upon the South African automotive industry in the very near future, it is of the utmost importance that this topic be included into the organisations’ strategic dialogues as a matter of urgency. This study found the level of perceived intelligence of South African engineers to be high. Additionally, this cohort indicated a heightened level of awareness and in-depth knowledge surrounding the 4IR. Therefore, this study recommends that organisations leverage these strategic resources to their fullest benefit. Joint 4IR task teams should be setup comprising of engineers and individuals from other departments such as Information Technology (IT) and Human Resources (HR). These teams should spearhead pilot projects in line with the advances associated with the 4IR. Management should further take into cognisance, monitor and pro-actively investigate the possible behavioural and psychological implications associated with the increased use of technology. It is therefore recommended that regular surveys, open dialogues and possible voluntary psychometric evaluations be conducted wherever these new technologies are piloted. This study also found that the 4IR might lead to the loss of unskilled jobs which would have a broader socio-economic impact. In sharp contrast to popular belief, humans will still play an important role in the 4IR and as such organisations should, therefore, openly commit to educating and upskilling their lower skilled employees in line with the needs of the 4IR as this would be mutually beneficial for the organisation and employees. This would demonstrate the companies’ long-term commitment to their lesser skilled employees and reassure them of their job security, thereby reducing the risk of job losses and potential industrial action.

- Description: The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) is a new phenomenon that will impact human society drastically. It is complex, highly dynamic and constantly evolving at an everincreasing pace. To date the majority of research on the topic of the 4IR is focused on technological and scientific topics, with little to no work done on the human behavioural aspects such as intelligence. At the commencement of this paper only one other author published papers on the intelligences that are required to cope with the disruption associated with the 4IR. This paper is therefore the first known study paper which aims to determine the level of physical-, contextual-, emotional- and inspired intelligence of engineers in the South African automotive industry. The Big Five EU members are used to represent the EU trading bloc. The research also examines the effects of economic size, market size and ex-change rate on South African trade flows with members of the Southern African Customs Union and of the European Union in what is called the European Union-Southern African Development Community Economic Partnership Agreement (EU-SADC EPA). The research employs comparative analysis aimed at identifying the differences in the effects of market size, economic size and exchange rate on South Africa’s trade flows with these two trading blocs. The study exploits panel data on international trade of South Africa over the period 2000-’16. A gravity model of trade is used to identify the effect of these three variables on South Africa’s trade flows. The empirical analysis relies on a panel data econometrics framework as an estimation technique for the gravity model of trade between South Africa and the Big Five EU members. This shows the outcomes of the effects of economic size, market size and exchange rate on the trade flows of South Africa in the TDCA. The same technique is applied to estimate the effects of economic size, market size and exchange rate to trade flows of South Africa with the Big Five EU members as well as the other SACU members representing the SADC-EU EPA. In the panel data approach, three models are adopted. These are pooled OLS, fixed effects and random effects that can be estimated. The Hausman tests shows that the random effect is appropriate in the TDCA gravity function and the results indicate a positive relationship be-tween South Africa’s economic/market size and South Africa’s trade flows in the TDCA. In the EU-SADC EPA, the Hausman tests indicated that the fixed effect models are appropriate and the results show a positive relationship between economic size and market size with South Africa’s trade flows in the EU-SADC EPA. However, in the TDCA, the random effect model shows that exchange rate and the trading partner’s market size have a negative outcome on South Africa trade flows. The fixed effect model shows a negative relationship between the exchange rate and South Africa’s trade flows in the EU-SADC EPA. The results also show that it is better for South Africa to trade in the EU-SADC EPA than to remain in the TDCA. This is because the outcomes of economic and market size on South Africa’s trade flows are greater in the EU-SADC EPA than in the TDCA. On the other hand the negative effect of the exchange rate on South Africa’s trade flows is less in the EU-SADC EPA than in the TDCA. The research recommends that policy-makers select trading partners based on the sizes of their markets and economies.

Critical assessment of the quality of sustainability disclosures published by public entities in South Africa

- Description: This study was performed in light of the limited research available regarding the quality of sustainability reporting in the public sector, and particularly in South Africa; and due to the important role which the public sector should play in enhancing sustainable behaviour and consequently sustainability reporting. There have been definite developments in legislation and guidelines which aim to enhance the quality of published sustainability disclosures. Therefore, in light of these developments, the objective of this study was to evaluate whether there has been an improvement in the quality of sustainability disclosures published by selected South African public entities for the 2014 financial year compared to the 2008 financial year. This study used both qualitative and quantitative methods to collect and analyse data. The content analysis method was used in this study, with the coding frame being developed deductively through the use of existing sustainability reporting guidelines. The guidelines analysed and incorporated into the coding frame for this study were the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Generation 4 (G4) guideline and the integrated reporting framework. To ensure that the coding frame contained codes relevant to the South African context, the King III Report on Corporate Governance (King III) and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange Social Reporting Initiative (JSE SRI) were consulted, and reporting requirements incorporated into the coding frame. Ten Schedule 2 reports and twenty Schedule 3 reports were analysed using the coding frame developed. Descriptive statistics were used to summarise the resulting data. The Spearman Rank Order Correlation and the Mann-Whitney U Test were used to test for possible statistical significance of the changes in the data observed. This study found a number of significant improvements in the quality of reporting of sustainability disclosures from 2008 to 2014. Significant improvements were noted in the areas of reporting relating to balanced economic and environmental disclosures as well as comparative social disclosures being made. There were also significantly more annual published reports labelled as integrated reports in 2014 as compared to 2008, and significantly more 2014 reports used the GRI guidelines, integrated reporting framework, King III or a combination of these in the preparation of the annual published report. Significantly more tables, graphs and diagrams were used in the disclosure of social and other related matters in 2014, which enhanced the clarity of the information reported. There were also significant improvements noted in the disclosures relating to strategic focus and future orientation of the 2014 annual published reports and in the number of non-economic performance targets included in the public entities’ performance reports. Significant improvement was also noted in the quality of overall social disclosures and specifically in the quality of social disclosures relating to labour practices and decent working conditions, and disclosures relating to the entity’s impacts on society. The word count used to disclose matters relating to stakeholder engagement and board practices, composition and remuneration saw significant increases from 2008 to 2014. Despite these improvements and consistent with prior literature, it is concluded that more needs to be done in respect of reporting on social and environmental impacts, through the use of sustainability reporting guidelines and effective stakeholder engagement. In addition, it is recommended that annual published reports aim to provide a more balanced picture of the reporting entity and that negative performance be discussed in more detail. More effort needs to be made in enhancing the reliability of the annual published reports as a whole, through obtaining external assurance on the social and environmental disclosures. Finally, politicians and decision-makers in the public sector need to address the key root causes which lead to poor quality reporting. The significant impact of the following factors on the quality of sustainability disclosures was noted: the public entity’s total asset value, its total revenue, its level of social and environmental impact, the form of the report used as well as the guidelines used to prepare the reports.

- Description: The research developed four possible future scenarios for agricultural financing in Sub-Saharan Africa towards 2055, namely the “Rising Sun”, “Two Wolves”, “The Left Wing and the Right Wing”, and the “Two Moons” scenarios. The scenarios aim to stimulate new thoughts on an inclusive and broader development approach to agricultural financing, and to identify gaps in the knowledge about a broad range of research issues relating to the level of complexity with regard to the decision-making environment in agricultural financing. The scenarios are developed, according to a strict and predetermined process, which is guided by the Six-Pillars approach of futures studies. A conceptual futures study model for agricultural financing was also developed to guide and clarify the way in which the research on agricultural financing can be integrated into the body of existing futures study theory. The research begins with a comprehensive environmental scan, from which various trends and driving forces emerged. The causal-layered analysis (CLA) method is then used in tandem with other futures-study techniques, such as the futures triangle and emerging issues analyses, to guide the process of knowledge creation about the future of agricultural financing. A real-time Delphi study was also conducted to validate and prioritise the megatrends and driving forces that emerged from the research. Subsequently, the research presents four future scenarios that aim to provide a better understanding of the future of agricultural financing in Sub-Saharan Africa over next 40 years. The research presents agriculture as a multi-dimensional sector that fulfils different roles and functions in especially rural communities in Sub-Saharan Africa, which contribute to the perceived riskiness of agricultural financing. The scenarios illustrate how conditions for agricultural development and agricultural financing can develop and change in the region towards 2055. Furthermore, it provides useful insight into the drivers for change and how to anticipate these changes. The Delphibased scenario research also allowed the aggregation of expert knowledge, which can be used to inform decision-makers in the financial-service sector to test the robustness and appropriateness of existing business models and strategies. The scenarios can also be used as a starting point for financial-service providers and other key stakeholders to identify the future challenges and to maximise the emerging business and development opportunities, as offered by the agricultural sector in Sub-Saharan Africa. The research closes a research gap with regard to scenario development in agricultural financing in Sub-Saharan Africa within the context of the globaldevelopment agenda. The research looks at the future of agricultural financing in Sub-Saharan Africa over the next 40 years from a decision-maker’s point of view; and it provides key insights into especially the rural agricultural financial challenge in the region. A cornerstone of the research is to align policy initiatives and the business strategies of financial service providers with the vision of a broadened view of rural finance and increased financial inclusion in agriculture. The scenarios offer a starting point to develop new and more inclusive agricultural financing strategies that have the ability to speed up income convergence and economic diversification, especially with regard to rural economies in Sub-Saharan Africa that are heavily dependent on agriculture and its related industries. Indigenous smallholder farmers across the world have developed techniques that reflect their intimate knowledge of their local environments and ecosystems to improve their agricultural yields and minimise postharvest losses. However, such indigenous knowledge techniques are rarely documented or enhanced to boost agricultural practice and ensure food security. The present study has identified potato farming in Cameroon as a potential contributor to the socio-economic development of farmers, their communities and their country. The potato farming industry largely consists of smallholder farmers, predominantly women, producing primarily of immediate consumption. Historically, these farmers have been sustaining their farms through indigenous knowledge and practices that are not being exploited to the fullest beneficial opportunities for these farmers. It has often been suggested that Western highly mechanised approaches should be implemented to commercialise these farms in order to access these benefits. These approaches of mechanisation require large capital outlays, which these smallholder farmers cannot afford, hence the approach taken by the present study to capitalise on the indigenous knowledge and practices of these farmers. The present study argued that working with the existing indigenous knowledge and practices of these farmers, a level of commercialisation, with the resulting job creation and economic benefits, could be achieved. This study has succeeded in identifying the causes of postharvest potato losses on the smallholding farms, the obstacles in reducing these losses and the techniques to reduce these losses. The study provides important recommendations to improve smallholder potato farming in Cameroon. By implementing the findings of this study, the Cameroon government, prospective potato farmers, entrepreneurs, traditional authorities and NGOs could make a significant contribution to the improvement of socio-economic conditions and the reduction of poverty levels in these farming communities.

The current antifungal agents used for treatment of cryptococcal infections either target the fungal cell wall (β-(1,3) glucan and chitin) or cell membrane directly or ergosterol biosynthetic pathways or fungal DNA and RNA. Gaps in antifungal therapy include the unavailability and exhorbitant costs of these drugs especially to patients in the developing world. Drug resistance to conventional drugs is also an ever-increasing problem. It is therefore essential to find alternative natural compounds from medicinal plants that are safer, cheaper and more widely available. Tulbaghia violacea, also known as wild garlic, has been used as a traditional remedy in South Africa for the treatment of several ailments. Aqueous and organic extracts of the plant have been demonstrated to have antimicrobial and antifungal activity against several pathogens. However, there is a huge gap in our current knowledge in that the mechanism/s of action/s of these extracts have not been fully investigated. The focus of the current study therefore was to determine whether T. violacea extracts from the roots, rhizome, leaves and tubers exhibited antifungal activity against C. neoformans and C. gattii and to evaluate the ability of the rhizome extract to induce changes in key fungal virulence factors. Three mechanisms (ergosterol, β-(1,3) glucan and chitin production) regulating the antifungal activity of the rhizome extract were also examined. In the current study, phytochemical analysis of aqueous extracts of the roots, leaves, rhizomes and tubers showed that the rhizomes had the highest phenolic, saponin and tannin content when compared to the other plant organs. Fingerprinting by GC-MS revealed identical compounds in the different plant parts with the detection of 4 H Pyran-4-one DDMP (known antifungal), previously unreported in studies on T. violacea. The bulk of the extract comprised of 40% sulphur-containing and 20% furan-containing compounds. The remaining minor compounds comprised of 2x alcohols (13.3%), 1x pyran (6.7%), 1x ketone (6.7%), 1x halogen (6.7%) and 1x acid (6.7%) compounds. The rhizomes also had highest content of 2 methyl methioacetic acid, benzophenone and chloromethyl methylsulfide compared to the other plant parts. The rhizomes were found to be more potent against both pathogenic fungi tested here with an MIC and MFC of 1.25 mg/ml. Nystatin was included as a positive control when determining the MIC’s and MFC’s of the different plant extracts. The antifungal nature of the T. violacea extracts in the current study may be due to the synergistic effects of the sulphide, furan, pyran and ketone compounds present in the extracts, but this still remains to be verified in future studies. An investigation of the effects of an aqueous rhizome extract of T. violacea on Cryptococcus virulence factors showed that phospholipase activity of C. neoformans and C. gattii remained unaffected with increasing sub-lethal doses of the plant extract. There was significant reduction in urease production in both fungi in a dose dependent manner relative to the untreated cultures after 24 hr exposure to the extract. However, urease production reverted to normal after 48 hr post exposure implying that the cultures were able to recover due to temporary inhibition of urease activity. A significant decrease in melanin production was observed in both C. neoformans and C. gattii with increasing sub-inhibitory concentrations of the rhizome extract. Investigation of the effect of the plant extract on the ultrastucture of the fungi via Transmission Electron Microscopy showed the induction of cytomorphological changes in C. neoformans and C. gattii. Changes included thickening of the cell wall, an increase in the number of vacuoles, mitochondrial swelling and occasional detachment of the membrane from the cell wall. These changes suggest the activation of possible defence mechanisms to compensate for the loss of cellular materials or an effort to sequester toxic T. violacea components or toxic intermediates generated from inhibited cellular pathways. The capsule size and architecture remained unaltered in the presence of sub-lethal doses of the rhizome extract. To study the mechanism of action of the rhizome extract on ergosterol biosynthesis, total sterols were extracted and ergosterol, squalene, 2,3-oxidosqualene and lanosterol were quantified using Reverse Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography. Ergosterol concentration declined in a dose dependent manner for both pathogenic yeasts similar to the positive control terbinafine, while there was a slight accumulation of squalene in C. gattii only. 2,3-oxidosqualene levels accumulated in both fungi relative to the untreated control. Lanosterol production showed an oscillatory trend for the two microorganisms. Together, these findings indicate that the rhizome extract is capable of inhibiting squalene epoxidase and 2,3-oxidosqualene/ lanosterol cyclase causing a decrease in ergosterol production.

The role of women's agricultural cooperatives in meeting United Nations sustainable development goals

- Description: The majority of the people in South Africa were poor prior 1994, especially those in the rural areas. Poverty in the rural areas affected mostly the women. The government of South Africa designed support programmes to mainstream women into the economy, although it had its own challenges, such as the non-participation of women in their own development and the top-down approach that at times was used by the government in the implementation of the programmes. Owing to the nature of the rural areas, agriculture was identified as a sector that had a potential to improve the economy in order to address the challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality. Since 2005 the concept of cooperative development has been a vehicle that has the potential to address the aforementioned challenges. In order for the cooperative development to run efficiently and effectively and in line with the cooperative principles and values, the government should keep the independence of this sector in mind by engaging the cooperatives in all the activities that were affecting the cooperative sector through their cooperative movement.The findings of the study showed that the agricultural cooperatives have not yet addressed poverty fully. All their members were employed and at times employment opportunities were extended to their community members, but the income earned was not satisfying its members. The women felt that they were not in control of their development as they lacked the capacity to lead and they were still led by the men in their cooperatives.

- Description: This research is born out of the realisation of the unique challenges that the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) policy required from the private sector in South Africa, with Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) being one of the components of the B-BBEE’s economic empowerment strategy. Over the years, the B-BBEE’s role has been one of ensuring that economic empowerment of historically disadvantaged individuals was addressed. The role of the B-BBEE policy is described as the framework that targets the reform of the economy, reduction of poverty and inequality and empowerment of those individuals that were historically disadvantaged (Patel & Graham, 2012, p. 194). The automotive industry is South Africa’s most important and largest sector, making a great contribution to the country’s GDP. It is responsible for the employment of many people in the country, including employment in the component manufacturers and tyre industry. With these linkages throughout the economy, the government has identified the automotive industry as a vital growth sector. Government is certain that this sector will address one of the major challenges for economic growth in South Africa, which is unemployment. In the year 2015, the B-BBEE Act was amended with new compliance requirements and this changed the B-BBEE rating of Mercedes Benz South Africa (MBSA), resulting in a reduction of the company’s rating. The changes to the standard, particularly the ownership component, resulted in challenges for multinational companies such as MBSA, and an opportunity to improve the rating was identified in the ESD component sector. If these new compliance requirements were not addressed by MBSA, a predictable reduction in B-BBEE status would occur, resulting in a loss of business with government and provision of government incentives. The objective of this research study was to analyse the role that ESD plays within MBSA in improving their B-BBEE scorecard, as part of its overall B-BBEE strategy. This study was sculpted on the concept that the role of ESD at MBSA is related to (a) preferential procurement, (b) skills transfer, and (c) mentoring and a detailed literature review was conducted for these variables as well as for ESD. In testing the above research objective, the researcher utilised statistical analysis methods to reach a conclusion with regard to the relationship of ESD to these variables. A positivistic research paradigm (quantitative) was selected in order to test the objective by using hypothesis testing. An empirical study was undertaken by means of a survey with a questionnaire utilised as a data collecting tool and distributed using the supplier database of MBSA. The aim of the questionnaire was to validate the outcomes obtained from the theoretical overview. Out of a sample of 116 respondents employed at the suppliers, only 92 responses were received, thus representing a 79% response rate, which is considered acceptable. The key findings of the study indicated that preferential procurement, skills development and mentoring play a significant role in the promotion of ESD. Preferential procurement indicated a stronger association than the other variables, and thus it was recommended that MBSA place importance on this variable. Based on these findings, recommendations were made to the management of MBSA in an effort to improve the ESD component of the B-BBEE score of the company. As a way of addressing some of the challenges automotive manufacturers face, suggestions for future research were made.

- Description: While the West African sub-region has progressed in its efforts to achieve sustainable development, more intensive efforts are needed to address its developmental constraints. Among these constraints, the fragmentation of the sub-continent into small and landlocked countries remain one of the structural challenges to be faced. For this reason, strengthening regional co-operation and economic integration is a significant part in the improvement of the region’s economic performance. Monetary integration, which involves the use of a common currency within the area, is part of the process of economic integration. This study reflects upon the difficulties experienced by countries within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) without a common currency to facilitate economic growth and development. The study adopted a descriptive methodology and embarked on a thorough analysis of recent and relevant secondary sources. This was done in order to determine the expected effects of a common currency in the community, as well as to evaluate the viability of a single currency in the area. The findings indicate that there are potential gains expected from the establishment of a common currency in the relevant community of countries. These gains are contingent upon the meeting of a number of preconditions. These conditions include, inter alia, the need for a multidimensional approach to regionalism, the sustainability of the fiscal policy framework in the region and a greater convergence of the ECOWAS economies.

This study has covered an analysis of the varying Route-to-Market strategies for primary and secondary distributors, and this data was used to provide a foundation for formulating a beverage industry Route-to-Market model based on identified critical success factors. It offers insight into the implementation process in the varying markets, highlighting the importance of tailoring the Route-to-Market model to specific markets, and the importance of keeping the processes customer focused. The objective of this study was to identify the critical success factors of Route-to-Market in the beverage industry of South Africa, specifically investigating the financial viability of the selected distribution method, the knowledge and talent management of the employees and customers, the impact and effect of product availability, the level and importance of service excellence, and analysing the significance of strategic planning. This was followed by a qualitative explanatory case study methodology and research design, using multiple embedded units of analysis, in the form of semi-structured interviews and provided a valuable insight into success factors of Route-to-Market in the beverage industry of South Africa. The overall conclusion is that an effective Route-to-Market model, which has a well-established customer base at its centre, will significantly improve the satisfaction of customers in terms of quality and respect for services rendered. It is recommended that a company should review its Route-to-Market strategies regularly as to ensure the model is as relevant as possible.

It is a relatively large source of finance for companies that want to invest in capital and expand their businesses. Firms that are listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) are therefore privy to an additional source of capital funds in addition having access to the credit markets. The development of a country’s equity market gives an indication of the extent to which firms have access to long-term funds which are needed for investment in production of goods and services and the growth of the economy. Historical evidence shows that downturns in the equity markets can disrupt economic performance of countries. The 1929 global depression and the 2008 global recession are examples of economic disruptions that have origins in the equity markets (Mishkin, 2013:190). An understanding of the risk factors that drive an equity market is therefore beneficial to both individuals and institutions. Individuals and institutions participate in the equity market by buying and selling shares of companies that are listed on the JSE. About 40 per cent of shares on the JSE are held by institutional investors such as pension funds and unit trusts (Ambrosi, 2014). The equity market therefore has an impact on people’s savings and pension funds invested by intermediary institutions. Investors who participate in the equity market do so with the expectation of receiving returns on their investment, but such returns don’t come without risk.

- Description: The studies reviewed for this project indicate that there is an interplay of family and social factors that affect the development of the child. Furthermore, some studies postulate that there is a relationship between children’s engagement in criminal behaviour and their family environment. The present study aimed to explore, describe and interpret how children who have been in conflict with the law construct their family environment. A qualitative research approach that was embedded in an explorative, descriptive and contextual research design was employed in order to achieve the objectives of the study. The research population was constituted of children from a Child and Youth Care Centre. A non-probability purposive sampling technique was employed to select children aged 14 to 17 years who have been in conflict with the law. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with the selected children and this data was analyzed using Tesch’s thematic analysis. Ethical considerations that were applicable for the involvement of children and vulnerable groups in research were adhered to. The trustworthiness of the research process, and the findings of the study, were enhanced by employing a variety of data verification strategies. Data was verified using: member checking, peer debriefing, clarifying bias by the researcher, and dense description of the application of the selected methods used in research suggested by Creswell. The major findings of this study include: positive and negative experiences of children prior to involvement to crime in their internal family environment. The external family environment was dominated by gangsterism and crime in the community, police corruption and their interaction with drugs. Furthermore, the study findings revealed positive and negative school experiences and posited several reasons why children break the law. It is hoped that the research will contribute to the knowledge base of Social Work and Practice interventions in the field of child protection services in general and, more specifically, on the criminal justice system.

- Description: The current throughput rate of engineering students is an enormous concern, especially in light of the current financial pressure on universities and the goal for the education sector in the National Development Plan 2030, which is to increase annual enrolment levels at universities from 950 000 in 2010 to 1,6 million by 2030 (National Planning Commission, 2011). The low throughput rate of engineering students makes engineering qualifications unsustainable. In a scarce skills list, which highlights the importance of the problem that South Africa is facing, five engineering disciplines are in the top 10 scarce skills in South Africa (Scarce skills, 2016) and, therefore, this study only focuses on engineering students’ throughput rate. Regarding the future enrolment goal for 2030, it is important for universities to understand the factors that influence the throughput rate of engineering students, which the universities have control over. This will put the universities in a position to implement interventions to change negative influences on the throughput rate of engineering students into positive ones. This study consists of a literature review, firstly focusing on the factors influencing the student throughput rate internationally. The literature review then focuses on South African factors and lastly discusses three main categories, namely student engagement, the use of technology and the academic environment. The eight variables that are under study are grouped into these three main categories. The primary data, which were collected through the use of a questionnaire in order to have a good understanding of the factors influencing the throughput rate, were reported and analysed. The results of this study revealed the factors that influenced the throughput rate most positively and negatively.

- Description: Career advancement is viewed as an important element of job satisfaction and employee retention, however the gender differences observed in the workplace globally mean that there is gender inequality even in career growth. With South Africa’s long history of discrimination, career advancement disparities are observed along racial and gender lines. The current study’s focus is on the factors affecting the career advancement of a group of black women working for a selected manufacturing firm in Gauteng. The study highlights the importance of both the individual and the organisation in driving career advancement and asserts that there are self-driven and employer-driven factors affecting the career growth of black women employed by the selected firm. The primary objective of this study was to investigate and analyse factors affecting the career advancement of South African black African women (hereafter referred to as black women) employed by the manufacturing company. After a comprehensive literature study, three self-driven factors (pre-career choices, career capital development and attitude towards gender discrimination) and three employer-driven factors (mentorship opportunities, organisational leadership and organisational culture) were identified as factors affecting career advancement. These were subsequently empirically tested. A quantitative research paradigm was adopted for this study. The sample chosen was the entire population of black women employed by the business in question. Using the survey research method, a structured questionnaire was distributed resulting in an 85% response rate. Cronbach’s alpha was employed to test the reliability or internal consistency of the research instruments, resulting in the minimum acceptable level of 0.70 being met. The data collected were subjected to statistical analyses using simple regression analysis, one-factor Anova and descriptive statistics. The simple regression analysis revealed that pre-career choices had a statistically significant positive influence on career advancement. Furthermore, the findings suggest a link between education and employability, as the majority of the respondents (53%) possessed tertiary qualifications. Although no empirical evidence was found to support the influence of the other five factors on career advancement, the use of descriptive statistics revealed clear differences brought about by variations in education, such as the significantly higher levels of career capital for respondents with post-graduate qualifications in comparison to the total sample. The findings of this study informed the recommendations made to promote the career advancement of the black women employed by the selected firm. These were recommendations for individuals to enhance their career capital through education and the pursuit of career goals, and for the organisation to support career development with a conducive environment that values all employees and affords them equal opportunities for growth.

However, developing trends such as changes in the supply of workers, expectations of new generations and a more diverse population have pressurised organisations to institutionalise a dynamic solution. This has placed greater imperative on becoming an employer of choice - those organisations that can differentiate their human resource practices from the competition in order to attract, develop and retain the people they need. The research problem that was addressed in this study is to identify and investigate the organisational attributes of an employer of choice. A comprehensive literature review was executed to review the various definitions, trends impacting as well as the significance of the status - employer of choice. Furthermore strategies for becoming an employer of choice were evaluated and prominent employer of choice attributes identified from the literature. The researcher has also found that a significant number of authors have suggested employer branding as a key strategy in the effort to become an employer of choice. The concept of employer branding was therefore extensively explored in this study. An empirical study was conducted after the appropriate measuring instrument was developed. The purpose of the measuring instrument was to validate the literature findings, identify the rank importance of the identified attributes and to evaluate the extent to which these factors are provided for in the organisation. A sample consisting of 110 employees were selected to participate in the survey via a random sampling method and a response rate of 89% or 98 employees was obtained. The major findings indicated that the sample group agreed that the prominent attributes in literature are important attributes of an employer of choice. Overall the majority of the sample group does not regard the organisation as an employer of choice and while some of the attributes were present in the organisation, others had serious shortcomings. The literature findings together with the empirical study findings resulted in the development of a strategic model to serve as a guide in determining the initiatives the organisation should embark upon to become an employer of choice.
