- Description: The purpose of this thesis was to develop a method by which economic value can be imputed from an economic activity to a non-market ecological function or service which contributes to that economic activity. The underlying assumptions were: - The ecological and economic activities considered are within a single catchment. - The allocation of value imputed for a specific economic activity to the ecological function or service under consideration (in this case the Knysna River) is proportional to the total contribution of ecological functions or services contributed to the economic activity. - The valuation of the economic activity for the purposes of obtaining a price-quantity point on a demand function is to be full cost pricing with no producer surplus. The two functional requirements were: - Diagram or map the linkages between an economic activity and the supporting ecological functions. - Determine the consumer surplus related to an incremental change in quantity under a demand function where the original price and quantity are known. A value from each of the economic activities was imputed to the Knysna River. However, the method was not tested. Nonetheless applying the equations and collecting the required data allowed several methodological needs to be clearly pointed out. The most acute deficiency was difficulty in obtaining secondary data from governmental agencies, commercial representatives and existing published academic research to ensure a robust price. Also, scientific information was not sufficiently available for allocating ecological contributions to the economic activities. Even with the shortage of credible data the method appears to allow non-market ecological functions to be valued in context of an existing economic system.

A knowledge of the movement histories of major ductile shear zones within the HRTS is fundamental to understanding the tectonic development of the belt, and Namaqua tectogenesis as a whole. In spite of this, no detailed microstructural kinematic studies have been attempted and the movement histories and age relationships of these shear zones have not been described in detail. This thesis represents a detailed microstructural kinematic study of a representative suite of orientated samples of mylonitic rocks, collected from five ductile shear zones within the HRTS. These shear zones include the Neusspruit Lineament, the Kakamas shear zone (KSZ), the Hugosput shear system (HSS), the Rozynenbosch-Ganzenmond shear zone (RGSZ) and the Graafwater shear system (GSS). Accepted modern methods of microstructural kinematic analysis were applied to samples of mylonite from these shear zones, in order to determine the precise orientation of the kinematic vectors, and the sense and relative ages of movements on each of the shear zones. Shear sense criteria, including composite SoC planar fabrics and shear band foliations, asymmetrical porphyroclast systems, mica-fish, oblique grain-shape and subgrain fabrics, asymmetrical microfolds, and the displacement of fractured rigid grains, together with a well-developed mylonite elongation lineation, conclusively indicate that SSW-directed thrusting occurred along the HSS, RGSZ, GSS and possibly along the Neusspruit Lineament, while normal, top-to-NE movements occurred on the Neusspruit Lineament, KSZ and HSS. Rare transposition criteria, and textural and paragenetic contrasts between syn-kinematic fabrics, strongly suggest that the phase of normal, top-to-NE movement seen in the northeastern HRTS shear zones is younger than the more widespread top-to-SW thrusting event. On the basis of mesoscopic structural criteria, SSW-directed thrusting is correlated with the D₂ deformation event in the HRTS. The mylonite zones have been refolded by ENE-SSW trending F₃ crossfolds, whose demonstrated coaxial relationship to the mylonite elongation lineation precluded reorientation of primary kinematic vectors. In the southwestern HRTS, primary thrust vectors have been reoriented by right-lateral, strike-slip shearing adjacent to the Pofadder Lineament during D₄. Simple shear dispersion of mylonite lineations related to normal movement, suggests that they too have been modified by D₄ shearing, and this constrains the timing of extensional movements to post-D₂ and pre- or syn-D₄. Syn-kinematic mineral assemblages, rheological criteria and the annealing states of the mylonites, provide insight into the thermotectonic evolution of the shear zones. A model is proposed in which the movement histories of shear zones within the HRTS are explained in terms of a typical orogenic cycle, involving crustal thickening by thrusting during a compressional orogenic phase, followed by collapse of the thickened crust during an extensional taphrogenic phase.

A mineral systems approach to the development of structural targeting criteria for orogenic gold deposits in the Asankrangwa gold belt of the Kumasi Basin, South-west Ghana

- Description: The Kumasi Basin in South-west Ghana lies at the centre of the best-endowed Paleoproterozoic gold province in the world. The Kumasi Basin and margins of the adjacent volcanic belts are host to six world class gold camps: (1) 62 Moz Obuasi camp, (2) 22 Moz Prestea-Bogoso camp, (3) 11 Moz Asanko Gold Mine camp, (4) 9 Moz Edikan camp, (5) 7 Moz Bibiani camp, (6) 5 Moz Chirano camp, as well as several additional minor gold camps and many more prospects. Cumulatively these camps account for>116 Moz of endowment and contribute to making south-west Ghana the greatest Paleoproterozoic gold province in the world. Gold deposits in the Kumasi Basin are shear zone hosted and mineralisation ranges from disseminated to massive sulphide refractory deposits, to free milling quartz vein style deposits. Structural relationships and age dating indicate that most deposits are genetically related and were formed during a single episode of gold mineralisation during the D4 NNW-SSE crustal shortening deformation event of the Eburnean Orogeny (2125 – 1980 Ma). The understanding of structural controls on mineralisation is critical for exploration success as it allows exploration to focus on areas where these structural controls exist. This study uses a mineral systems approach to understand the relationship between the geodynamic history and structural controls on gold mineralisation in the Kumasi Basin at various scales, and define targeting criteria which can be applied for the purpose of developing predictive exploration models for making new discoveries in the Asanko Gold Mine camp located in the Asankrangwa Belt. The study used a quantitative analysis to establish residual endowment potential in the Asankrangwa Belt, providing the basis for a business model and resulting exploration strategy. Once established, a Fry autocorrelation analysis was applied to identify trends in deposit and camp spatial distribution to which critical geological processes were ascribed. Observed trends were mapped from multi-scale geophysical data sets and through interpretation of existing geophysical structure models, and structural criteria for targeting orogenic gold deposits at the regional and camp scales were developed. Results show that different structural controls on mineralisation act at the regional and camp scale. At the regional scale the distribution of gold camps was found to be controlled by fundamental N-S and NW-SE basement structures with gold camps forming where they intersect NE-SW first and second order structural corridors. At the Asanko Gold Mine camp scale, deposit distribution was found to be related to the intersection between major second order D3 NE-SW shear zones, minor third order D4 NNE-SSW brittle faults, and cryptic NW-SE upward propagating basement structures. In addition to these structural criteria, deposits in the Asanko Gold Mine camp were found to be aligned along a NNE-SSW lineament caused by the interaction between the N-S basement structure and the NE-SW trending Asankrangwa Belt shear corridor.

- Description: The Postmasburg Manganese Field (PMF), located in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, plays host to significant deposits of iron and manganese that have been utilized since their discovery in 1922 by Captain L.T. Shone. Further afield, lies the massive high-grade manganese deposit of the Kalahari Manganese Field (KMF), which drew attention away from the PMF after its discovery. These deposits are not limited to iron and manganese ore, but contain significant assemblages of alkali-rich rocks - which is the focus of this study. The existence of alkali-rich assemblages beneath conglomeratic iron-ore on farm Langwervacht, has come under investigation in this study, and in particular, the enrichment of these rocks in Ba, Na and Mn. Petrographic analysis of the clast-supported conglomerate unit (ore-zone), has uncovered the presence of vugs (up to 8mm across) which contain barite, K-feldspar and fluorapatite. In addition to this, the ore-zone of one of the three boreholes contains late carbonate veins (kutnohorite), which travel along Fe-clast boundaries, and exploit clast-fractures and areas of weakness. Further down, within the ‘enriched-zone’ of alkalis, the mineralogy is more diverse - containing elevated concentrations of Ba, Na and Mn. Seventeen distinct minerals containing these three key elements have been identified - along with one solid-solution series in the form of hollandite-coronadite. The existence of minerals such as natrolite, aegirine, albite, banalsite, barite, serandite, celsian and hollandite-coronadite are indicative of hydrothermal activity having influenced these rocks. Bulk-geochemistry was used to compare the major and trace elements of each borehole and the associated units. Both the trace elements and the REE’s from the ore-zone are enriched by an average of 5-10x relative to the BIF standard used - which immediately suggests an influx of elements. Compared to PAAS (Post Archaean Australian Shales), the ore-zone REE’s are slightly depleted, but more importantly the profiles are very similar to that of the Mapedi shales achieved in previous studies. This result points towards a strong shale influence in the ore-zone protolith. Expectedly, many of the enriched-zone trace elements and REE’s show far greater enrichment than what is observed in the ore-zone. Trace and Rare Earth Element profiles between the ore-zone and the enriched-zone are, however, generally correlative, with profiles reflecting similar enrichments and depletions for a given element - even within different rock units. This suggests that the hydrothermal fluid has moved in a general upward direction, reacting with host-rock units, and relinquishing elements carried in solution - wherever conditions have been favourable for the accommodation of these elements. This study has shed light on the relationship between the ore-zone and the enriched-zone, and results suggest that the process of alkali enrichment is not directly related to the process of upgrading of the iron ores. This is due to the extent of the alkali-enrichment below the ore-zone, as well as enrichment factors in some trace elements being superior to that of Fe2O3 in the ore- zone. Hence, both of these zones have both been affected by a later hydrothermal fluid. The source of the fluid is likely a mature basinal brine, of oxidized, alkaline nature - which leached elements (Ba, K, Na, Pb, Ca) from older rocks, and carried them in solution. On a local-scale, this fluid has exploited areas of weakness in the form of fractures, less consolidated conglomeratic material and crosscutting veins. Manganese and iron has been remobilized on a local scale - producing secondary textures and partitioning into phases such as Mn-rich calcite and serandite. Comparisons to other studies in the PMF and KMF have revealed very similar alkali-rich assemblages, bearing many of the same minerals observed in this study - even within more manganiferous deposits. These findings have led to suggestions of a possible regional-scale hydrothermal overprint, which may have imparted a similar geochemical signal over the entire region - with the assistance of faults and unconformities. Of course, proving this is no mean feat, but current work on the source of barium in barite, using Sr isotopes from samples across the region may shed light on the source of at least one key element of these deposits.

Manganese and iron has been remobilized on a local scale - producing secondary textures and partitioning into phases such as Mn-rich calcite and serandite. Comparisons to other studies in the PMF and KMF have revealed very similar alkali-rich assemblages, bearing many of the same minerals observed in this study - even within more manganiferous deposits. These findings have led to suggestions of a possible regional-scale hydrothermal overprint, which may have imparted a similar geochemical signal over the entire region - with the assistance of faults and unconformities. Of course, proving this is no mean feat, but current work on the source of barium in barite, using Sr isotopes from samples across the region may shed light on the source of at least one key element of these deposits.

This involved carrying out interviews with hitch-hikers and participating in several trips. The study results provided the design specifications for a Dynamic Ridesharing System (DRS) tailor-made to the hitch-hiking culture of this context. The design of the DRS considered the delivery of the ad-hoc ridesharing service to the anticipated mobile phones owned by people who use hitch-hiking. The implementation of the system used the available open source solutions and guidelines under the Siyakhula Living Lab project, which promotes the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in marginalized communities of South Africa. The developed prototype was tested in both the simulated and live environments, then followed by usability tests to establish the viability of the system. The results from the tests indicate an initial breakthrough in the process of modernizing the ad-hoc ridesharing of hitch-hiking which is used by a section of people in the urban and rural areas of South Africa.

Communication however, can take place in many different modes, across many different devices and may originate from many different sources. The aim of this research was to develop a model for adaptive mobile notification using context awareness. An extensive literature study was performed into existing models for adaptive mobile notification systems using context awareness. The literature study identified several potential models but no way to evaluate and compare the models. A set of requirements to evaluate these models was developed and the models were evaluated against these criteria. The model satisfying the most requirements was adapted so as to satisfy the remaining criteria. The proposed model is extensible in terms of the modes, devices and notification sources supported. The proposed model determines the importance of a message, the appropriate device and mode (or modes) of communication based on the user‘s context, and alerts the user of the message using these modes. Differences between the sites also contributed to their selection. Mozambique is one of the least developed countries in the world, while South Africa is one of the most developed countries in Africa. Heuristic evaluation was used for the analytical evaluation while questionnaires and user testing were used for the empirical evaluation. Some of the usability problems identified in the heuristic evaluation, such as incorrect organisation of information and navigation issues, were also identified in the empirical evaluation, confirming to the existence of these usability problems. The results of this research show that the IA of government web sites has an impact on user performance and satisfaction and that the proposed model can be used to design and evaluate the IA of government web sites in Southern Africa.

The objective of the research was to propose an effective natural user interface (NUI) architecture for detecting FMSs using the Kinect. In order to achieve the stated objective, an investigation into FMSs and the challenges faced when teaching them was presented. An investigation into NUIs was also presented including the merits of the Kinect as the most appropriate device to be used to facilitate the detection of an FMS. An NUI architecture was proposed that uses the Kinect to facilitate the detection of an FMS. A framework was implemented from the design of the architecture. The successful implementation of the framework provides evidence that the design of the proposed architecture is feasible. An instance of the framework incorporating the jump FMS was used as a case study in the development of a prototype that detects the correct and incorrect performance of a jump. The evaluation of the prototype proved the following: - The developed prototype was effective in detecting the correct and incorrect performance of the jump FMS; and - The implemented framework was robust for the incorporation of an FMS. The successful implementation of the prototype shows that an effective NUI architecture using the Kinect can be used to facilitate the detection of FMSs. The proposed architecture provides a structured way of developing a system using the Kinect to facilitate the detection of FMSs. This allows developers to add future FMSs to the system. - Description: A basket weaving technique for making radio continuum maps has been developed at the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO). This data reduction technique significantly reduces scanning effects by using independent maps scanned in orthogonal directions. The observation and data analysis procedures that were developed are presented. The technique was used to map the supernova remnant MSH 15-52 at frequencies of 5000 MHz and 8500 MHz. The flux spectral index for this supernova remnant was found to be 0.83 ± 0.02 in this frequency range. Two regions (A and B) of the Galactic plane were observed at 8500 MHz with a resolution of 6'. Region A covered the 5°x5° area 47.5°< k 52.5°, Ibl < 2.5°, and region B was the 4.2°x3° area 320.4°< I <334.6°, Ibl < 1.5°. Far infrared observations at 60 !lm were used in conjunction with the radio maps to separate the thermal and non-thermal components of the radio emission. The technique can be used to map the Galactic plane at 8500 MHz using dual polarisation once the receiver at HartRAO has been upgraded. A new empirical model for the peak ionospheric electron density using neural networks

Existing models, such as the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) and 8KYCOM, were used to predict the 12 noon foF2 value over Grahamstown (26°E, 33°8). An attempt was then made to find a model that would improve upon these results. The traditional method of linear regression was used as a first step towards a new model. It was found that this would involve a multi variable regression that is reliant on guessing the optimum variables to be used in the final equation. An extremely complicated modelling equation involving many terms would result. Neural networks (NNs) are introduced as a new technique for predicting foF2. They are also applied, for the first time, to the problem of determining the best predictors of foF2. This quantity depends upon day number, level of solar activity and level of magnetic activity. The optimum averaging lengths of the solar activity index and the magnetic activity index were determined by appling NNs, using the criterion that the best indices are those that give the lowest rms error between the measured and predicted foF2. The optimum index for solar activity was found to be a 2-month running mean value of the daily sunspot number and for magnetic activity a 2-day averaged A index was found to be optimum. In addition, it was found that the response of foF2 to magnetic activity changes is highly non-linear and seasonally dependent. Using these indices as inputs, the NN trained successfully to predict foF2 with an rms error of 0.946 MHz on the daily testing values. Comparison with the IRI showed an improvement of 40% on the rms error. It is also shown that the NN will predict the noon value of foF2 to the same level of accuracy for unseen data of the same type.

- Description: Lee, T. et al (1981) proposed the encapsulation of hormones such as progesterone into serum albumin beads, such that their in vivo proteolysis would allow a gradual release of hormone at low levels, for extended hormone action. It was proposed, in the Department of Microbiology, Rhodes University, to replace the hormone component of the above bead formulation, with virus as antigen, in the development of a vaccine. Beads optimally crosslinked at 1% final glutaraldehyde concentration, containing Nodamura virus, were shown to promote an adjuvant effect in vivo, analogous to the release of antigen from Freund's Complete Adjuvant (FCA), so that extended immunostimulation resulted. It was shown that soluble antigen promoted a short-lived primary immune response, peaking around day 25 following inoculation. Antigen presented in beads, on the other hand, initially elicited a low humoral response, but this response gradually increased up to a peak around day 110 post inoculation, before decreasing. - Description: Lee, T. et al (1981) proposed the encapsulation of hormones such as progesterone into serum albumin beads, such that their in vivo proteolysis would allow a gradual release of hormone at low levels, for extended hormone action. It was proposed, in the Department of Microbiology, Rhodes University, to replace the hormone component of the above bead formulation, with virus as antigen, in the development of a vaccine. Beads optimally crosslinked at 1% final glutaraldehyde concentration, containing Nodamura virus, were shown to promote an adjuvant effect in vivo, analogous to the release of antigen from Freund's Complete Adjuvant (FCA), so that extended immunostimulation resulted. It was shown that soluble antigen promoted a short-lived primary immune response, peaking around day 25 following inoculation. Antigen presented in beads, on the other hand, initially elicited a low humoral response, but this response gradually increased up to a peak around day 110 post inoculation, before decreasing. Results: Of the 46 teachers who participated 36 (78 %) were obese. The mean waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio was 109.99 and 0.887 respectively (± 17.32 and ± 0.089). The teachers obtained a relatively high mean overall score in the pre-test of 69 % (± 10.78). Only 42 % of the teachers had heard of the SAFBDG before the study. There was an overall statistical significant increase in knowledge of 6 % (p = 0.03) from the pre-test to the post-test. The dietary practice was obtained through a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), which showed under-reporting. The most neglected food groups were legumes, dairy and vegetables/ fruit. Hypertension was the highest self-reported condition, with just under a quarter of the teachers having hypertension (high blood pressure). There was no statistical significance between the teachers’ BMI and their nutrition knowledge as well as no statistical significance between their BMI and their physical activity level. Conclusion and recommendations: Even though the teachers obtained a relatively high mean overall score in their pre-test, there were still gaps in their nutrition knowledge. These gaps in the teachers’ knowledge results in insufficient nutrition knowledge being provided to the learners, leading to poor dietary practices and misconceptions regarding different foods among the learners as well as the teachers. A nutritional evaluation of effluent grown algae and zooplakton as feed ingredients for Xiphohorous helleri, Poecilia reticulata and Poecilia velifera (Pisces : Poeciliidae)

- Description: The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional value of algae and zooplankton grown in an algal integrated ponding system for poeciliids. The available information on the nutritional requirements of poeciliids was compared with a proximate analysis of the algae and zooplankton. The effluent grown algae and zooplankton had a crude protein value of 41.47 ± 0.2% and 36.84 ± 0.3%, a lipid content of 4.8 ±. 0.4% and 11.1 ± 0.8% and a carbohydrate content of 35.13 ± 0.8% and 31.06 ± 0.6% respectively. These values compared favourably with those of the known nutritional requirements of poeciliids. To test if the nutritional value of the algae and zooplankton in the AlPS was constant, the species composition of the algae and the crude protein content of the algae and zooplankton in the high rate oxidation ponds were measured monthly and bi-weekly for a year respectively. The species composition remained fairly stable for the duration of the experiment and the average protein composition of the algae and zooplankton was 43.4 ± 4.4% and 38.6 ±2.8% respectively. This indicated that the algae and zooplankton in the AlPS provided high protein biomass through the year. The quality of the effluent grown algal and zooplankton biomass was evaluated by analysing their amino acid composition and comparing it with the amino acid composition of the body tissue of X. helleri. With respect to the amino acid composition of the body tissue of X. helleri, the amino acid profile of the algae had a 69% and the zooplankton a 63% similarity. The quality of the pure algal and zooplankton protein was also tested biologically, by feeding them directly to poeciliids during a ten week growth trial. The algae and zooplankton diets did not result in adequate growth compared to poeciliids which were fed a formulated control diet. The initial growth trial also evaluated the effect of processing on the chemical composition of the algae and its biological effect on fish fed with it. There were no significant differences in the chemical composition of fresh and sun dried algae and this was reflected in the growth rates of the fish which did not differ significantly. Freeze dried algae had a lower crude protein content than fresh and sun dried algae and a poorer amino acid composition. Fish fed freeze dried algae exhibited poorer growth and survival in comparison to the other treatments. The gut transit times of X. helleri and the gastric evacuation times of poeciliids were determined using colour dyes incorporated in the diet and by sacrificing fish at predetermined intervals after feeding respectively. The gut transit time of X. helleri fed a sun dried algal diet and a formulated diet was 225 ± 8.55 minutes and 261.93 ± 10.86 minutes respectively. The gastric evacuation times of X. helleri, P. reticu/ata and P. velifera were 7, 9 and 8 hours respectively. Since the maximum amount of food in the hindgut after feeding was detemined to be 3, 5 and 3 hours in X. helleri, P. reticulata and P. velifera respectively, fish were sacrificed at these times in the digestibility study. The digestibility of sun dried algae was determined using 1 % chromic oxide as an internal marker in the algae. The apparent crude protein digestibility of sun dried effluent grown algae ranged from 65%-75% in the three poeciliid species. Based on the results of the chemical and biological analysis of the algae and zooplankton, conventional diets incorporating algae at 5% and 20% protein inclusion levels were formulated. These diets and a treatment in which zooplankton, reared in the AlPS were fed as a dietary supplement to a formulated diet were fed to poeciliids for twelve weeks. No significant differences in the growth of poeciliids fed any of the test diets were observed. It was concluded that the algae could be incorporated into poeciliid formulated diets up to level of 20% protein inclusion without any negative effect on the growth of the fish. The chemical and biological evaluation of the algae suggested that it had a similar nutritional quality to soyabean meal. Poeciliid growth was not enhanced with a zooplankton supplement, however a possible low feeding rate by poeciliids on the zooplankton as a result of their small size may have affected the result. The colour enhancement potential of effluent grown algae and zooplankton was evaluated biologically in ten and twelve week growth trials using visual observation (31 people) and by using a chromameter. While pure, sun dried algae significantly enhanced the colour of P. reticulata, no significant differences in the colour of poeciliids were observed or recorded when fish were fed diets incorporating sun dried algae up to levels of 20% protein inclusion. The effect of effluent grown algae and zooplankton on poeciliid health was also tested biologically in the ten and twelve week growth trials. The high mortalities (75%-84%) recorded for X. hel/eri when fed the pure algal and zooplankton diets were considered to be as a result of the nutritional inadequacy of the diets since there were significantly less mortalities in fish fed the formulated control diet and 63% of the fish that died during the course of the trial were emaciated. In addition, fewer mortalities (10%-40%) were recorded in X. hel/eri fed the nutritionally adequate formulated diets in the twelve week growth trial. No symptoms of disease were recorded in the twelve week growth trial and the algae was considered to have no toxicological or pathological effects on poeciliids. Centrifugation, sand filtration, sedimentation, microstraining and biological harvest were evaluated as methods of small scale algal harvest from the high rate oxidation ponds. Algae could be harvested most efficiently with little associated labour by sedimentation (without flocculating agents) and by microstraining with 60IJm mesh. Effluent grown algae can replace conventional feed ingredients up to a level of 20% protein inclusion without negatively effecting the growth, colour, health or survival of poeciliids.

There were no significant differences in the chemical composition of fresh and sun dried algae and this was reflected in the growth rates of the fish which did not differ significantly. Freeze dried algae had a lower crude protein content than fresh and sun dried algae and a poorer amino acid composition. Fish fed freeze dried algae exhibited poorer growth and survival in comparison to the other treatments. The gut transit times of X. helleri and the gastric evacuation times of poeciliids were determined using colour dyes incorporated in the diet and by sacrificing fish at predetermined intervals after feeding respectively. The gut transit time of X. helleri fed a sun dried algal diet and a formulated diet was 225 ± 8.55 minutes and 261.93 ± 10.86 minutes respectively. The gastric evacuation times of X. helleri, P. reticu/ata and P. velifera were 7, 9 and 8 hours respectively. Since the maximum amount of food in the hindgut after feeding was detemined to be 3, 5 and 3 hours in X. helleri, P. reticulata and P. velifera respectively, fish were sacrificed at these times in the digestibility study. The digestibility of sun dried algae was determined using 1 % chromic oxide as an internal marker in the algae. The apparent crude protein digestibility of sun dried effluent grown algae ranged from 65%-75% in the three poeciliid species. Based on the results of the chemical and biological analysis of the algae and zooplankton, conventional diets incorporating algae at 5% and 20% protein inclusion levels were formulated. These diets and a treatment in which zooplankton, reared in the AlPS were fed as a dietary supplement to a formulated diet were fed to poeciliids for twelve weeks. No significant differences in the growth of poeciliids fed any of the test diets were observed. It was concluded that the algae could be incorporated into poeciliid formulated diets up to level of 20% protein inclusion without any negative effect on the growth of the fish. The chemical and biological evaluation of the algae suggested that it had a similar nutritional quality to soyabean meal. Poeciliid growth was not enhanced with a zooplankton supplement, however a possible low feeding rate by poeciliids on the zooplankton as a result of their small size may have affected the result. The colour enhancement potential of effluent grown algae and zooplankton was evaluated biologically in ten and twelve week growth trials using visual observation (31 people) and by using a chromameter. While pure, sun dried algae significantly enhanced the colour of P. reticulata, no significant differences in the colour of poeciliids were observed or recorded when fish were fed diets incorporating sun dried algae up to levels of 20% protein inclusion. The effect of effluent grown algae and zooplankton on poeciliid health was also tested biologically in the ten and twelve week growth trials. The high mortalities (75%-84%) recorded for X. hel/eri when fed the pure algal and zooplankton diets were considered to be as a result of the nutritional inadequacy of the diets since there were significantly less mortalities in fish fed the formulated control diet and 63% of the fish that died during the course of the trial were emaciated. In addition, fewer mortalities (10%-40%) were recorded in X. hel/eri fed the nutritionally adequate formulated diets in the twelve week growth trial. No symptoms of disease were recorded in the twelve week growth trial and the algae was considered to have no toxicological or pathological effects on poeciliids. Centrifugation, sand filtration, sedimentation, microstraining and biological harvest were evaluated as methods of small scale algal harvest from the high rate oxidation ponds. Algae could be harvested most efficiently with little associated labour by sedimentation (without flocculating agents) and by microstraining with 60IJm mesh. Effluent grown algae can replace conventional feed ingredients up to a level of 20% protein inclusion without negatively effecting the growth, colour, health or survival of poeciliids.

The reaction of vanadyl (VO2+) with glycine, ʟ-alanine, imidazole-2-cabrboxylic acid, imidazole-4-carboxylic acid and 1-methylimidazole-2-carboxylic acid was studied in aqueous solution by pH-potentiometry under oxygen and carbon dioxide-free conditions. The data obtained from these titrations were used to calculate the protonation and stability constants. The results showed that all ligands are suitable for bidentate coordination in the formation of monomeric species although the solid state studies of the oxovanadium(IV) complexes of amino acids showed a monodentate coordination. The overall stability constants for the (VIVO)-ʟ-alanine system (log β120 = 18.27(6)), (VIVO)-glycine system (β120 = 17.22(6)), (VIVO)-imidazole-4-carboxyic acid (β120 = 11.38(8)), (VIVO)-imidazole-2-carboxylic acid (β120 = 11.62(6)) and (VIVO)-1-methylimidazole-2-carboxylic acid (β120 = 15.49(9)) were obtained. The calculations for the species distribution in the experimental pH range showed that the neutral bis-coordinated complexes are dominant over the biological pH range. The glucose uptake effect of oxovanadium(IV) complex of ʟ-alanine, imidazole-4-carboxylic acid, imidazole-2-carboxylic acid and 1-methylimidazole-2-carboxylic acid was investigated using 3T3-L1 adipocytes, Chang liver and C2C12 muscle cells at various concentrations. In this work, the researcher developed a pipeline for VLBI data analysis which integrates a recent wide-field imaging algorithm, RFI excision, and a purpose-built source finding algorithm specifically developed for the 64kx64k wide-field VLBI images. The researcher used this novel pipeline to process 6% (~ 9 arcmin2 of the total 160 arcmin2) of the data from the CANDELS GOODS- North extragalactic field at 1.6 GHz. The milli-arcsec scale images have an average rms of a ~ 10 uJy/beam. Forty four (44) candidate sources were detected, most of which are at sub-mJy flux densities, having brightness temperatures and luminosities of >5x105 K and >6x1021 W Hz-1 respectively. This work demonstrates that automated post-processing pipelines for wide-field, uniform sensitivity VLBI surveys are feasible and indeed made more efficient with new software, wide-field imaging algorithms and more purpose-built source- finders. This broadens the discovery space for future wide-field surveys with upcoming arrays such as the African VLBI Network (AVN), MeerKAT and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA).

Using the design-based research methodology which is problem driven and iterative, we followed a user-centred design process in creating FundaWethu. To promote sustainability of the software, we chose to bring teachers on board as “co-designers” using the lesson authoring tool. We made the authoring tool simple enough for use by non computer specialists, but expressive enough to enable a wide range of beginners reading exercises to be constructed in a number of different languages (indigenous South African languages in particular). This project therefore centred on the use of designbased research to build FundaWethu, the design and construction of FundaWethu and the usability study carried out to determine the adequacy of FundaWethu.

The method represents an extension of previous physicochemical techniques based on viscometry, but is simpler and easier to carry out, particularly in the case of reaction rate studies. The method was developed arising from reports of collagenase activity measurement on inappropriate substrates such as gelatin, modified collagens and synthetic polypeptides. The optical method depends on measurement of the loss in optical rotation in solutions of soluble calfskin collagen resulting from initial enzymic cleavage of the collagen trip1e-helix, followed by spontaneous unwinding of the resultant unstable helical fragments. Specific assay conditions were chosen to ensure that the loss in optical rotation following enzymic cleavage was rapid and complete. The method is specific since in the absence of collagenase, non-specific proteinases produce only a limited decrease in solution optical activity. The method has also been compared with established physicochemical assay techniques and compares favourably with both viscometric and titrimetric collagenase assays. The availability of a rapid, sensitive and quantitative procedure for measurement of collagenase activity provides a convenient means for detecting the presence of collagenase in solution and examination of hide bacterial cultures for collagenase production. In addition, a study of biocidal compounds of potential interest in hide preservation for possible inhibitory effects on collagenase is conveniently carried out with the method. Fundamental research into synergistic action in enzymic hydrolysis of collagen is now possible, providing valuable insight into the mechanism of raw hide biodeterioration.
