Isn’t it time to start thinking about ‘developing’ academic developers in a more systematic way?

- Description: publisher version , There is no defined route to becoming an academic developer. The research on pathways into the field (e.g. Kensington-Miller, Brailsford, and Gossman, 2012; McDonald, 2010; McDonald and Stockley, 2008) shows that in most cases ‘serendipity and chance played a role’ (McDonald, 2010, p. 40). Moreover, induction into academic development (AD) is often ad hoc, haphazard, and informal. Due to the changing higher education (HE) context, the field has grown exponentially and in many countries now plays a central role in institutions. This has generated increased demand for knowledgeable and competent developers that are able to contribute towards solving some vexing problems in contemporary HE. Current recruitment and induction processes of new developers do not necessarily meet this demand. In light of the above, we pose the question: given the changing context of HE and the field of AD, is it not time for us to induct newcomers into the field more systematically? As Kensington-Miller et al. (2012) suggest, we should not leave the induction of the next generation of developers to chance. We suggest that one way of ensuring appropriate induction is through a formal course for developers. Difficulties for newcomers to the field are illustrated by Kensington-Miller et al. (2012) when they report seeking ‘top tips’ at a HERDSA conference. We do not dismiss informal learning at conferences or the role of mentoring, coaching, apprenticeship, and so on, in inducting developers, nor do we minimise the benefits of relatively structured processes such as fellowship programmes, workshops, and postgraduate qualifications in related fields. However, these ways of induction may not offer novices the structured and systematic developmental opportunities needed to become developers able to fulfil varied, complex, and sometimes contradictory roles.

Isolation of genes encoding heat shock protein 70 (hsp70s) from the coelacanth, Latimeria chalumnae

- Description: Under stress conditions, proteins unfold or misfold, leading to the formation of aggregates. Molecular chaperones can be defined as proteins that facilitate the correct folding of other proteins, so that they attain a stable tertiary structure. In addition, they promote the refolding and degradation of denatured proteins after cellular stress. Heat shock proteins form one of the main classes of molecular chaperones. We are interested in determining if the genome of the coelacanth (Latimeria chalumnae) encodes a heat shock protein-based cytoprotection mechanism. We have isolated 50 kb and larger coelacanth genomic DNA from frozen skin tissue of L. chalumnae. From the alignments of several fish Hsp70 proteins, conserved regions at the N- and C-termini were identified. Codon usage tables were constructed from published coelacanth genes and degenerate primers were designed to isolate the full-length hsp70 gene and regions encoding the ATPase and the peptide binding domains. Since it is known that the tilapia and Fugu inducible hsp70 genes are intronless, we proceeded on the assumption that a coelacanth inducible hsp70 would also be intronless. A large fragment (1840 bp) encoding most of a coelacanth Hsp70 protein, and two partial fragments encoding a coelacanth Hsp70ATPase domain (1048 bp) and peptide binding domain (873 bp), were isolated by polymerase chain reaction amplification. Protein sequences translated from all the nucleotide sequences were closely identical to typical Hsp70s. This is the first study to provide evidence for a cytoprotection mechanism in the coelacanth involving an inducible Hsp70.

Juta and Co Ltd and the South African Law Journal: a milestone

- Description: It might be said that the relationship between a journal and its publisher is something like an arranged marriage: it is cultural rather than romantic, and it is more of a business deal carefully considered by those in charge of both sets of parties with quiet aspirations of a solid future than about the passion and emotion of the wedding. There is much that is controversial about the social construct of an arranged marriage, but the relationship between the South African Law Journal (SALJ) and Juta and Company Ltd (to be referred to hereafter by its more common sobriquet in the legal profession: 'Juta') does seem to give credence to one of the most popular psychologies about the institution: that very often the relationship, a little uncertain at the start, grows stronger and more secure over time. The year 2011 marked the centenary of the publication of the SALJ by Juta: an exceptional anniversary. This is not a time to review the history of the relationship between Juta, the SALJ, and its various editors. This task has been carried out several times by Ellison Kahn in his inimitable style (see 'Fifty years of the Journal under Union' (1960) 77 SALJ 162; 'The birth and life of the South African Law Journal' (1983) 100 SALJ 594; 'Foreword' to Patricia Cobbledick and Mervyn Dendy The South African Law Journal Cumulative Index 1973-1997 (1997); 'Farewell! Fifty years' hard work comes to an end' (1999) 116 SALJ 691; 'Speech at the Juta Dinner at the South African Law Journal Jubilee Conference' (2004) 121 SALJ 271). But a short commemorative tribute seems apt to commemorate the liaison between the two parties.
