- Description: This thesis presents a value-laden understanding of development that acknowledges that development is human centered. The study re-emphasizes that human development which has become a powerful element of current development discourse is not just a social, economic and technological challenge; it is also an institutional and political challenge. The study therefore analyzes the notion of human development with the intention of improving it by placing more emphasis on the aspect of politics and human agency (the ability to act and be an agent of one‘s life). Politics here is understood beyond its usual institutional focus or identification with government, politicians and parliaments to include a much wider and much more important and dynamic range of activities found in all human groups such as institutions and societies. The study then demonstrates that since development is a process, individuals need to work collectively towards a common good so as to realize their development potential. This means creating a confederation of development where governments, citizens and non-governmental organizations work in partnership guided by a culture of collectiveness (civic culture) in order to produce more empowered citizens. The major argument in this study is the concern for citizens to effectively participate in areas that affect and impact on their lives and consequently be in a position to hold accountable institutions that affect their decision making capabilities. A study of the selected wild edible plants utilized by indigenous people of the Amathole District in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa

- Description: Wild edible plants are an indispensible part of diets in some of the poor resourced rural societies. In many less resourced households a main meal comprises of a starch staple which is accompanied by a supplement of vegetables that provide the other nutritional elements as well as flavour to the meals. The vegetable relish (isishebo) thus, becomes an important component of the diet. The sustenance of many such resource poor indigenous societies over many generations has been as a result of their reliance on a readily available supply of their nutritional requirements, where edible wild plants formed the major food source. Wild edible plants provided the most important source of nutritional supply even during times of drought and famine. However, lifestyle changes have caused a serious reduction of the gathering and use of the wild edible vegetables, knowledge about them and the local culture are also lost with them. Unfortunately, others have come to regard their traditional food resource base as primitive and inferior and have come to rely on new exotic food plant whose supply is unstable and narrow compared to the wide variety of wild edible plants. Even when drought challenges play destruction with food availability, resulting in food shortages due to the reliance on cultivated crops that are poorly adapted to local conditions, communities cannot go back to the unknown food plants. However, detailed scientific investigations are needed to understand and preserve wild food uses. This study was undertaken to add to that body of knowledge. It started with an ethnobotanic survey of the use of wild food plants in 10 selected rural villages and peri-urban dwellings in the Amathole District of the Eastern Cape. These rural areas were chosen because of the belief that there are still individuals who possess the wealth of traditional knowledge within those remote areas in addition to that the villages are surrounded by indigenous vegetation from which they could be harvesting some indigenous food plants. Furthermore, the relationship between people and plants are often clearer in indigenous/traditional societies since the link between production and consumption is more direct. Besides the survey, this research employed various methods including Inductively Coupled Argon (ICP) analyses of minerals and vitamins, determination of phytochemicals and antioxidant/bio-activity that of, higher performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) determination of other vitamins, assessment of proximate and anti-nutrient compositions of raw and cooked samples of plants, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) to look into the micro-morphology of leaves for details that might have a bearing in the nutrient composition of the wild edible vegetables. This was done with the aim to explore and highlight the wild-food-plant base of indigenous people, to investigate the nutritional value of the selected frequently consumed wild vegetables and to recommend ways of educating people on the value of such plants and the need to promote their continued sustainable use as well as preservation of them for the benefit of people who cannot afford a continuous nutritious meal particularly among rural communities. Twenty-five (25) indigenous wild food plants which included leafy vegetables, nuts and fruits species were identified as being arbitrarily gathered and utilised as food, of which seven wild leafy vegetable species were often mentioned as common among the 15 dwellings surveyed and most frequently consumed by the respondents. Two additional plants were also frequently used as flavoring and in their raw state respectively. Wild edible vegetables were mainly eaten boiled as ‘laxa’, mixed with maize meal as ‘imifino’, fried as relish ‘isishebo’ or raw for both snacking purposes and medicinal functions. Wild edible plant species in the Amathole District of the Eastern Cape-South Africa were documented with respect to their uses and knowledge or identification. Four indigenous wild vegetables (Chenopodium album, Solanum nigrum/nodiflorum, Amaranthus dubius and Urtica lobulata) frequently consumed by the indigenous communities in the study region were selected. All the plant species had a remarkably high content of pro-anthocyanidins (between 58.42 and 65.18 mg/g) and also exhibited high radical scavenging activity in vitro. S. nigrum and C. album were found to be rich sources of ascorbic acid, having 1.05mg/100g and 1.01mg/100g, respectively. The entire wild, traditionally edible plants contain reasonably good concentrations of riboflavin while U. lobulata was found to contain maximum amount of thiamine. All plant species were rich sources of minerals and vitamins (both water soluble and fat soluble). Appropriate cooking methods are to be used to enhance the bio-availability of vitamins and nutrients in general. Cooking generally improved the nutritive value in certain wild vegetables. However, some nutrients were drained away. For example micro-nutrient and anti-nutrient component in the ash were reduced in cooking. The EDXS analysis has shown that the indigenous, wild vegetables in the Amathole District of South Africa are excellent sources of minerals, while the mineral crystals present at the level of the mesophyll of the indigenous wild vegetables were probably mixtures of calcium oxalate, calcium sulphate and silica. Saponin, tannins, oxalates, phytates and alkaloids are present in all the indigenous wild vegetables, but in minimal safe quantities. Nutritional analysis of some wild food plants demonstrates that in many cases the nutritional quality of the plants is comparable and in some cases even superior to domesticated exotic varieties. Knowledge about gathering and use of some wild food species is common among the rural dwellers. However, most uses are known by few elderly informants only. - Description: The main objective of this study was to determine the extent and nature of value that HRM digitalisation can add to the South African workplace. Digitalisation is a product of 4IR, which refers to the process of leveraging and applying 4IR technologies within organisational operations, including HRM, with the aim of optimising business processes. HRM digitalisation refers to the adoption and application of digital HRM technologies of the 4IR in the conduct of HRM practices, policies, activities and transactions to optimise the HRM function. Due to a shortage of studies that shed light on the value contributed by HRM digitalisation in the workplace, a need arises to determine the extent and nature of this value and the strategies needed to unlock this potential in the context of the 4IR. Moreover, in most South African (SA) organisations, there has been a lack of a fully integrated approach to digital HRM. Thus, this study aims at exploring HRM digitalisation and the value it contributes to South African organisations, with the expectation of developing an articulated and integrative HRM digital strategy for South African organisations. This study was accomplished by means of a literature and an empirical study. The literature study provided theoretical information related to challenges and opportunities introduced by the 4IR in the world of work, with specific reference to the South African workplace and which therefore impact HRM and necessitate the need for digitalisation of HRM. In addition, the following were explored: HRM Digital Strategies that could be adopted and add value in the South African workplace; the extent and nature of that value; the challenges probably encountered in doing so and possible means to overcome the challenges. The discussion led to the development of a hypothetical, theoretical model of HRM digitalisation in the South African workplace. The hypothetical model was used as the basis for the development of a measuring instrument used to collect empirical data for this study. The empirical study used the online questionnaire survey as the data collection instrument that measured the extent and nature of value that various HRM Digital Strategies could vii | P a g e add to the South African workplace; perceived value and hard evidence of the impact of HRM digitalisation; and the extent and nature of challenges associated with the Adoption of HRM Digital Strategies across the HR value chain. The online survey questionnaire was administered to HR directors, HR managers, HR practitioners and line managers who worked in the automotive manufacturing industry in the municipalities of Nelson Mandela Bay in Port Elizabeth and Buffalo City in East London in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. A non-probability sampling procedure which comprised a combination of purposive and snowball sampling methods was used to select participants for the study (n = 312). The results from the empirical study, computed using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), descriptive statistics and inferential statistics (such as paired-sample t-tests, Pearson’s product moment correlation and regression analysis) showed that organisations in South Africa had invested and adopted more of Digital Talent and Digital Media strategies and less of Digital Org (Design & Culture) and Digital ERM HRM strategies across the HR value chain and as a result, had gained more value at relational level, followed by that at operational level. They gained the least value at transformational level. It was therefore revealed that if HRM professionals, managers and leaders within organisations want to boost the contribution of the HRM function towards achieving the strategic goals of the organisation (transformational level), digitalising the function is one of the best ways. They can achieve this by investing more of HRM Digital Strategies related to Digital Org (Design & Culture), followed by Digital Talent and Digital ERM strategies. Challenges related to the adoption of digital strategies across the HR value chain were only found to negatively influence Digital Org (Design & Culture) and Digital ERM strategies, whereas Digital Talent and Digital Media strategies were not negatively influenced. A framework for guiding the interdisciplinary design of mHealth intervention apps for physical activity behaviour change

- Description: The global pandemic of noncommunicable diseases and its associated premature mortality rates and socioeconomic burden have led to increasingly intensified efforts towards designing and delivering health promotion interventions aimed at addressing the leading modifiable health risk behaviours, such as physical inactivity. Developing physical activity behaviour change interventions that target individuals at the dual intra-interpersonal socioecological levels of health promotion has become a key objective worldwide. Digital and mobile technology is revolutionising the ways in which health behaviour change interventions are delivered to individuals across the world, with mobile health applications (mHealth apps) increasingly recognised as a powerful means of promoting physical activity behaviour change. However, with the growth and opportunities of mHealth apps, come several design challenges. Key design challenges concern the integration of theory, the incorporation of evidence-based behaviour change techniques, the application of persuasive systems design principles, and the importance of multi- and interdisciplinary collaborative design, development and evaluation approaches. These key challenges influence the output product design and effectiveness of mHealth physical activity behaviour change intervention apps. There exists a paucity of approaches for guiding and supporting the multi- and interdisciplinary collaborative design, development and evaluation of mHealth physical activity behaviour change intervention apps. To address this gap, this research study proposes an Interdisciplinary mHealth App Design Framework, framed by a novel boundary object view. This view considers the diverse communities of practice, boundary objects and supporting artefacts, process activities, and knowledge sharing practices necessary and relevant to the design of effective mHealth physical activity behaviour change intervention apps. The framework’s development is guided by a Design Science Research (DSR) approach. Its core components are based on the findings of a critical theoretical analysis of twenty existing multi- and interdisciplinary digital health development approaches. Once developed, the framework is evaluated using a qualitative DSR linguistic interpretivist approach, with semi-structured interviews as the research instrument. The thematic analysis findings from interviews with thirty-one international academic researchers and industry practitioners informs the iterative modification and revision of an enhanced Interdisciplinary mHealth App Design Framework, constituting the main DSR artefact contribution of the research study. In addition, four theoretical contributions are made to the mHealth intervention app design body of knowledge, and a practical contribution is made through the provision of guideline recommendations for academics and industry practitioners. This view considers the diverse communities of practice, boundary objects and supporting artefacts, process activities, and knowledge sharing practices necessary and relevant to the design of effective mHealth physical activity behaviour change intervention apps. The framework’s development is guided by a Design Science Research (DSR) approach. Its core components are based on the findings of a critical theoretical analysis of twenty existing multi- and interdisciplinary digital health development approaches. Once developed, the framework is evaluated using a qualitative DSR linguistic interpretivist approach, with semi-structured interviews as the research instrument. The thematic analysis findings from interviews with thirty-one international academic researchers and industry practitioners informs the iterative modification and revision of an enhanced Interdisciplinary mHealth App Design Framework, constituting the main DSR artefact contribution of the research study. In addition, four theoretical contributions are made to the mHealth intervention app design body of knowledge, and a practical contribution is made through the provision of guideline recommendations for academics and industry practitioners. Compounds from the South African natural compounds database (SANCDB) were docked against both the NDH2 crystal structure and modelled structures. By performing in silico screening the study aimed to find potential compounds that might interrupt the electron transfer to quinone therefore disturbing the enzyme‟s function and thereby possibly eliminating the plasmodium parasite. CHARMM-GUI was used to create the membrane (since this work is with membrane-bound proteins) and to orient the protein on the membrane using OPM server guidelines, the interface produced GROMACS topology files that were used in molecular dynamics simulations. Molecular dynamics simulations were performed in the Centre for high performance computing (CHPC) cluster under the CHEM0802 project and the trajectories produced were further analysed. - Description: The responsibility of Fisheries Governance Authorities (FGAs) is to ensure that there is sustainable utilisation and exploitation of marine living resources through effective Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS). MCS is a mechanism used to implement agreed policies, plans and strategies for oceans and fisheries governance, and it is key to their successful implementation. In the continent, the African Union (AU), through its agencies, economic and regional structures encourage and supports national and regional MCS programs. South Africa is a SADC coastal State with a fisheries governance branch mandated to ensure sustainable marine living resources’ utilisation with support from a national MCS program. This support depends on the effectiveness of the current national MCS organisational structure, capacity, legislative and policy framework, as well as regional cooperation. In addition to an extensive literature review, this study developed a MCS framework, following international fisheries legislation and guidelines, for testing the South African MCS’ conformity to such a model. Furthermore, Namibia and Mozambique were included as examples of SADC coastal States to determine their responsiveness to regional cooperation and coordination. Based on the framework, a questionnaire with four parts, Part A: Background Information; Part B: Evaluation of MCS Enablers; Part C: Evaluation of an MCS system process and its effectiveness – reactive approach; and Part D: - proactive approach was developed to collect information. The data was analysed, using appropriate statistical methods to determine, against set characteristics, the level of information that the government respondents could provide to the research topic, and to determine the effectiveness of the South African MCS program. Limited information from Namibia and Mozambique showed readiness in their respective MCS programs for a regional MCS integrated approach, as is the case with South Africa, but there is no serious engagement to implement any regional MCS program. Results showed that the South African MCS program's effectiveness is generally adequate, but there are challenges with planning; financial resources; MCS equipment; stakeholder engagement processes, and governance. A primary recommendation from this study was that business plans, as utilised in the private sector, should be developed by South African Fisheries Governance Authority (FGA) to address MCS governance shortcomings as revealed by this study. Ectomycorrhizal fungal assessment of South African Pinus patula seedlings and their biological control potential to enhance seedling growth

- Description: The South Africa forestry industry, covering 1.3 million hectares, is dependent on exotic pine and eucalyptus species. Nursery seedlings are not inoculated with ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi or other beneficial microbes. Fusarium circinatum is an economically important pathogen affecting seedling survival. The purpose of this investigation was to assess levels of naturally occurring ECM colonisation in South African nurseries and to determine the effects of seedling inoculation with selected ECM and bacterial isolates on plant growth and resistance to the fungal pathogen F. circiantum. Pinus patula seedlings from 10 different South African nurseries were assessed for ECM colonisation using a grid line intersect method and molecularly identified using morphological and next-generation Illumina sequencing. Explants from ECM basidiocarps, collected from Pinus stands, were plated onto MMN medium to obtain isolates which were verified using molecular techniques. Mycorrhizal helper bacteria (MHB) were also isolated from these basiocarps, tested for MHB properties, siderophore production, phospahte solubilising and IAA production. ECM and associated bacterial isolates were used to inoculate seedlings and growth was assessed over a 5 month period. Colonisation of seedlings in production nurseries was low (2-21%). Morphologically the ECM fungi T. terrestris, Suillus sibiricus, and the genera Russula, Pseudotomentella were identified. Molecularly the ECM fungi T. terrestris, Inocybe jacobi and the genera Sphaerosporella and several other ECM containing families were identified along with many saprotrophic/endophytic fungi belonging to genera such as, Penicillium, Ramasonia and Talaromyces. Inoculated seedlings showed a significant increase in growth in comparison to the un-inoculated control seedlings. ECM fungal colonisation levels of these seedlings were significantly increased and colonisation was promoted by the Suillus isolate, Salmon Suillus. Seedling growth in the presence of the pathogen F. circinatum was significantly increased and promoted by the Lactarius isolate Lactarius quieticolor. Vulnerability refers to the child’s potential to be harmed either physically or psychologically with multiple exposures to stress resulting in children becoming vulnerable (Matengu, 2018). Factors that place young children at risk of being harmed include poverty, being orphaned, not living with their biological parents or having a disability. In South Africa, more than 50% of children are impacted by these very factors (DSD, 2018). Vulnerable children can be supported through various interventions to overcome the challenges they face, in spite of the stress that they may experience. This results in a great need for prevention and early intervention services particularly during early childhood when children are most vulnerable because of their complete dependency on caregivers for care and protection. This study adopted an interpretivist, qualitative approach using an intervention research design to develop guidelines for a model of an early childhood home-visiting programme that supports the optimal development of vulnerable children, aged 0–2 years in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Findings confirmed that vulnerable children need responsible caregiving and a nurturing environment yet they are exposed to risk factors such as extreme levels of poverty, ongoing and severe child maltreatment and poor physical health. In addition findings confirmed that there was support available to vulnerable children in the Eastern Cape province but that there were gaps in these services. Furthermore findings indicated that there is a need for an early childhood home-visiting programme, that such a programme should be implemented by a multidisciplinary workforce and that the guidelines for such a programme must include a range of practice principles and processes. In conclusion the study found that vulnerable children in the Eastern Cape province continue to be exposed to a complex range of risk factors with devastating consequences for their immediate and future well-being and that the gaps in services to vulnerable children further hinders their development. Lastly it was concluded that there is a need for a multidisciplinary team to implement a home-visiting programme and that such a programme would hold many potential benefits for the young and vulnerable child. Guidelines for a model of an early childhood home visiting programme were developed and refined to include five practice principles which outline processes in relation to the engagement and advocacy with stakeholders and role players, the recruitment and selection of a home-visiting workforce, the content of a training programme for a home visiting workforce, the implementation of the home-visiting programme and the monitoring and evaluation of the programme. - Description: This work focuses on the design, synthesis and evaluation of imine-containing heterocyclic and acyclic compounds with special focus on their bioactivity against parasitic protozoans (P. falciparum and T. brucei) - given the context of drug resistance in the treatment of malaria and Human African sleeping sickness and the fact that several bioactive organic compounds have been reported to possess the imino group. Starting from 2-aminopyridine, novel #-alkylated-5-bromo-7-azabenzimidazoles and substituted 5-bromo-1-(carbamoylmethy)-7-azabenzimidazole derivatives were prepared, and their bioactivity against parasitic protozoans was assessed. NMR spectra of the substituted 5- bromo-1-(carbamoylmethy)-7-azabenzimidazole derivatives exhibited rotational isomerism, and a dynamic NMR study was used in the estimation of the rate constants and the free- energies of activation for rotation. The free-energy differences between the two rotamers were determined and the more stable conformations were predicted. Novel 2-phenyl-7-azabenzimidazoles were also synthesised from 2-aminopyridine. A convenient method for the regioselective formylation of 2,3-diaminopyridines into 2-amino- 7-(benzylimino)pyridine analogues of 2-phenyl-7-azabenzimidazole was developed, and some of the resulting imino derivatives were hydrogenated to verify the importance of the imino moiety for bioactivity. The 2-phenyl-7-azabenzimidazoles and the 2-amino-7- (benzylimino)pyridine analogues were screened for their anti-protozoal activity and their cytotoxicity level was determined against the HeLa cell line. In order to validate the importance of the pyridine moiety, novel #-(phenyl)-2- hydroxybenzylimines, #-(benzyl)-2-hydroxybenzylimines and (±)-trans-1,2-bis[2- hydroxybenzylimino]cyclohexanes were also synthesized and screened for activity against the parasitic protozoans and for cytotoxicity against the HeLa cell line. - Description: This work focuses on the design, synthesis and evaluation of imine-containing heterocyclic and acyclic compounds with special focus on their bioactivity against parasitic protozoans (P. falciparum and T. brucei) - given the context of drug resistance in the treatment of malaria and Human African sleeping sickness and the fact that several bioactive organic compounds have been reported to possess the imino group. Starting from 2-aminopyridine, novel #-alkylated-5-bromo-7-azabenzimidazoles and substituted 5-bromo-1-(carbamoylmethy)-7-azabenzimidazole derivatives were prepared, and their bioactivity against parasitic protozoans was assessed. NMR spectra of the substituted 5- bromo-1-(carbamoylmethy)-7-azabenzimidazole derivatives exhibited rotational isomerism, and a dynamic NMR study was used in the estimation of the rate constants and the free- energies of activation for rotation. The free-energy differences between the two rotamers were determined and the more stable conformations were predicted. Novel 2-phenyl-7-azabenzimidazoles were also synthesised from 2-aminopyridine. A convenient method for the regioselective formylation of 2,3-diaminopyridines into 2-amino- 7-(benzylimino)pyridine analogues of 2-phenyl-7-azabenzimidazole was developed, and some of the resulting imino derivatives were hydrogenated to verify the importance of the imino moiety for bioactivity. The 2-phenyl-7-azabenzimidazoles and the 2-amino-7- (benzylimino)pyridine analogues were screened for their anti-protozoal activity and their cytotoxicity level was determined against the HeLa cell line. In order to validate the importance of the pyridine moiety, novel #-(phenyl)-2- hydroxybenzylimines, #-(benzyl)-2-hydroxybenzylimines and (±)-trans-1,2-bis[2- hydroxybenzylimino]cyclohexanes were also synthesized and screened for activity against the parasitic protozoans and for cytotoxicity against the HeLa cell line. Some pegmatites show Sr isotopic compositions that indicate mantle components contributing to the parental granites from which the pegmatites evolved. Others show higher Sr initials, indicating crustal granites as primary pegmatite sources or significant crustal contamination. For all others the granitic origin is interpreted by mineralogical and geochemical evidence. All analysed pegmatites belong to either the Rare Element Class or the Miarolitic Class, but they vary in their degree of fractionation. The more evolved pegmatites are more enriched in incompatible elements such as Be, Li, B, and Ta, which resulted in the formation of gem minerals such as beryl, aquamarine, tourmaline and topaz, which may or may not be associated with tantalite. The Rare Element pegmatites can be further subdivided into the REL-Li subclass, beryl type, beryl-columbite subtype, and in the complex type and elbaite subtype. The Miarolitic pegmatites include Mi-Li subclass and beryl-topaz type. Fluid inclusion studies (heating-cooling stage, Raman spectroscopy) identified a variety of fluid compositions that were present at different times and different places, indicating a variety of fluid sources. They range from aqueous-saline to CO2–rich carbonic fluids (CO2 +C3H8+ N2), or aqueous-carbonic fluids (H2O-CO2-CH4 and H2O-CO2-H2-H2S-CH4). The dominant solutes and species for the pegmatites show genetic variations over time and orogen (Paleo-/Meso-/Neoproterozoic). Uniform homogenisation temperatures and salinities in individual samples indicate that the gem-bearing pegmatites contained homogeneous fluids at the time of their capturing in quartz. Based on fluid inclusion data, the estimated trapping conditions of inclusions in quartz for all studied pegmatites except for one pegmatite suggest low pressures between 0.9 to 2.6 kb at temperatures of 400-600 C. The other pegmatite formed at slightly higher pressures of 2.2 to 3.6 kb. However, the pressure range for all the pegmatites is in agreement with the known liquidus conditions of Rare-Element pegmatite crystallisation. Emotional intelligence (EI) theory offers a means to understand behaviour, attitudes, and interpersonal skills, which are important for nursing managers (NMs) to facilitate personal and professional development, well-being, and improved quality of care. Researchers have called for more research to create a greater awareness and understanding of EI in nursing leadership. Critical Realism was used as the epistemological framework to meet the objectives of the study. The aim was to identify practical recommendations for interventions that could enhance the ability of NMs to manage the challenges associated with leadership. Using an explanatory framework, the objectives were to (i) generate causal explanations for organisational phenomena, given the EI of NMs and the conditions of its exercise, (ii) describe how NMs use their EI abilities in challenging situations, and to (iii) identify interventions to develop the EI of NMs. Although the research on EI is extensive, research on NMs and interventions to develop EI in NMs was not found. Purposive sampling was employed with focus groups and individual semi-structured interviews used to gather data. The data was analysed using thematic data analysis and retroduction to identify the most logically compelling explanation for events. The findings showed that the EI of NMs is essentially related to work engagement, burnout, turnover intention, work satisfaction, communication, interpersonal relationships, and job performance. Understanding the replication biology of Providence virus: elucidating the function of non-structural proteins

- Description: Tetraviruses are non-enveloped, small insect RNA viruses with a single stranded positive RNA genome that is either monopartite or bipartite. Providence virus (PrV) is the only member of the three tetravirus families with a viral replicase similar to the replicases of tombusviruses and umbraviruses. The principle aim of this thesis was to study PrV replication, focusing on subcellular localization and potential interactions between PrV replication proteins. The first objective of this study was to generate an anti-p104 antibody that does not cross-react with p40. Expression of the C-terminal portion of p104 in E. coli resulted in no detectable protein. Further expression in an insect cell based expression system resulted in the production of an insoluble protein. Attempts to improve protein solubility with a range of solubilization treatments were unsuccessful. Bioinformatic analysis was used to detect an antigenic region at the C-terminus of p104 and the peptide was used to raise anti-p104 antibodies. These antibodies did not detect native protein by western blot detection however they were used for immunoprecipitation. The establishment of the subcellular localization of PrV required two approaches; immunofluorescence in persistently infected Helicoverpa zea MG8 cells using antip40 and anti-dsRNA antibodies and the expression of EGFP-replicase fusion protein in Spodoptera frugiperda Sf9 cells. Replication of PrV was found to take place in cytosolic punctate structures. Co-immunoprecipitation experiments revealed that p40 self-interacts and interacts with p104. Bioinformatic analysis of PrV p104 suggests that the RdRp is similar to viral RdRps of the carmo-like supergroup II. Potential RNA binding regions are present within p104. A potential p40 interaction domain that shares hydrophilic and surface exposed properties with the TBSV p33 interaction domain is present. A putative arginine-rich region and disordered C-terminal region is present in p130. In conclusion, PrV p104 is the viral replicase. The resemblance of the expression strategy and putative functional domains with tombusviruses and umbraviruses suggest that PrV replication is related to the replication system of the tombusviruses and umbraviruses. - Description: Various research methods were employed to evaluate reservoir rock properties and source rock maturity for hydrocarbon potential in the offshore Gamtoos and Algoa basins, including lithostratigraphy, facies analysis, petrography, geophysics, geochemistry and basin modelling. Sedimentary facies were identified in the Gamtoos Basin along with their inferred depositional systems, mainly from the synrift I and II successions. This was also supplemented by lithostratigraphic evaluation of 12 wells across the study area. Facies analysis was applied to describe different rock types with depositional signatures by using the following parameters: grain fabric/texture, primary sedimentary structures, and fossil contents. Different types of lithofacies and biofacies were recorded indicating variations in bioturbation from low to high intensities. The results revealed a total of 15 types of facies from five cores, which were further subdivided into 8 types of sandstones, 3 types of siltstones, 3 types of mudstones and 1 type of conglomerate. Furthermore, five facies associations FA1 to FA5 were recognized from core evaluation: hemipelagite facies association, fine-grained, thinly bedded heterolithic sandstone-mudstone facies association (low-density turbidity flows), medium to coarse grained massive sandstone facies association high-density turbidity flows, debrites hybrid facies association and coarse grained conglomerate facies association. In terms of lithostratigraphic sequence, they correspond with fine- to medium-grained massive sandstone units of the Ta division, horizontal laminated sandstone units of the Tb division, fine to medium grained wavy laminated sandstone units of the Tc division, parallel laminated siltstones intercalated with fine grained ripple and lenticular sandstones of the Tc to Td divisions and fine grained massive, bedded siltstone units of the Te division. Both the Gamtoos and Algoa offshore basins comprise wells with proven source rock presence. Results from geochemical evaluations have revealed the presence of significant quantities of Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous (Kimmeridgian, Tithonian, Berriasian, Valanginian and Hauterivian) source rock intervals. The wells used for this research intersected a total of 25 source rocks across the various age groups with an average thickness of 70 m. Source rocks with hydrocarbon potentials were intersected at Kimmeridgian, Tithonian, Berriasian, Valanginian and Hauterivian successions. The source rocks indicate good to excellent quality of hydrocarbons with the potential to generate both oil to gas. For example, Tithonian source rock shows a tremendous petroleum generation potential with mostly type II (oil prone) and type II/III (oil to gas prone) kerogen. The data suggests that the Tithonian source rock was mainly deposited in marine depositional settings with planktons being the main source of kerogen. Some of the kerogen could have originated from limited quantities of algae (marine settings) and terrestrial plants. The source rock indicates a potential to generate variable hydrocarbons from oil, wet gas and dry gas. The Kimmeridgian and Tithonian source rocks range from main oil window to post gas mature zone. In the south-eastern part of the offshore Gamtoos Basin, deep marine shale source rocks were deposited between the Kimmeridgian and Tithonian age and these marine conditions continued throughout the synrift stage. The Algoa Basin indicates the deposition of deep-water shale source rocks resulting from a transgression period. The Berriasian source rock indicates a range in maturity from the early oil to gas windows in the Gamtoos graben between 126 Ma and present day. The source rock further shows a maximum transformation ratio of 100 percent at well Ha-D1 in the Gamtoos Basin. The Valanginian source rock indicates a range in maturity from early to late oil windows in the Algoa Basin with extremely low rates of transformation at a maximum of 24.67 percentage at well Hb-B1. The Hauterivian source rock dominantly plots within the early to main oil windows with vitrinite values between 0.6 and 0.8 percent. Results obtained from this research indicate the presence of moderate to good quality source rocks from the Kimmeridgian, Tithonian, Berriasian, Valanginian and Hauterivian. Majority of the source rocks have type III kerogen which is most likely to generate gas. The study area shows the presence of good quality source rocks with good petroleum generation potentials. The source rocks also show the ability to generate and expel hydrocarbons. The deeper sections of the grabens indicate high maturity levels with source rocks dominantly in the gas and late oil windows while the flanks are indicative of lower maturity stages between early and main oil windows. The best source rocks were mainly intersected and modelled from the synrift section while the upper transitional to drift sections indicate good quality reservoir rocks. The upper sections of the study area show a tremendous improvement in the quality of the reservoirs with porosity levels recorded to be up to 26 percent. The porosity levels increase up to 17 percent at well Ha-B2. This generally improved the potential for good reservoirs in the area from what has been intersected by the wells to the entire study area with the presence of effective traps and seals. The influence of hydrothermal alteration and chlorite cementation is quite low at these shallower sequences which further improved the quality of these reservoirs. Some of the sandstones intersected from the synrift sections range from very fine to coarse grained in texture with very low permeability and porosity due to extensive carbonate cementation, and also affected by hydrothermal alteration resulted from the extensive faulting in the area. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science and Agriculture, 2022

The source rock indicates a potential to generate variable hydrocarbons from oil, wet gas and dry gas. The Kimmeridgian and Tithonian source rocks range from main oil window to post gas mature zone. In the south-eastern part of the offshore Gamtoos Basin, deep marine shale source rocks were deposited between the Kimmeridgian and Tithonian age and these marine conditions continued throughout the synrift stage. The Algoa Basin indicates the deposition of deep-water shale source rocks resulting from a transgression period. The Berriasian source rock indicates a range in maturity from the early oil to gas windows in the Gamtoos graben between 126 Ma and present day. The source rock further shows a maximum transformation ratio of 100 percent at well Ha-D1 in the Gamtoos Basin. The Valanginian source rock indicates a range in maturity from early to late oil windows in the Algoa Basin with extremely low rates of transformation at a maximum of 24.67 percentage at well Hb-B1. The Hauterivian source rock dominantly plots within the early to main oil windows with vitrinite values between 0.6 and 0.8 percent. Results obtained from this research indicate the presence of moderate to good quality source rocks from the Kimmeridgian, Tithonian, Berriasian, Valanginian and Hauterivian. Majority of the source rocks have type III kerogen which is most likely to generate gas. The study area shows the presence of good quality source rocks with good petroleum generation potentials. The source rocks also show the ability to generate and expel hydrocarbons. The deeper sections of the grabens indicate high maturity levels with source rocks dominantly in the gas and late oil windows while the flanks are indicative of lower maturity stages between early and main oil windows. The best source rocks were mainly intersected and modelled from the synrift section while the upper transitional to drift sections indicate good quality reservoir rocks. The upper sections of the study area show a tremendous improvement in the quality of the reservoirs with porosity levels recorded to be up to 26 percent. The porosity levels increase up to 17 percent at well Ha-B2. This generally improved the potential for good reservoirs in the area from what has been intersected by the wells to the entire study area with the presence of effective traps and seals. The influence of hydrothermal alteration and chlorite cementation is quite low at these shallower sequences which further improved the quality of these reservoirs. Some of the sandstones intersected from the synrift sections range from very fine to coarse grained in texture with very low permeability and porosity due to extensive carbonate cementation, and also affected by hydrothermal alteration resulted from the extensive faulting in the area. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science and Agriculture, 2022

Notably and shockingly, misunderstanding of the sexual orientation of gays in initiation schools has brought about conflict. It is of great significance for ulwaluko tradition to renegotiate its terms of being a tradition tolerating those with different sexualities within their adored culture. Therefore, this study sought to assess the attitudes of heteronormative traditional male circumcision stakeholders towards an emergence of same-sex sexuality in ulwaluko in Mdantsane and New Brighton, Eastern Cape. The study endeavoured to achieve the following objectives: i to establish the policy insights on same-sex sexuality in South Africa and elsewhere; ii to assess the prevalence of homosexuality in South Africa and other contexts; iii to establish an account of gay men’s intimate behaviour at the initiation schools; iv to examine perceptions and attitudes of selected communities on Xhosa gay men undergoing the rite of traditional male circumcision; v to establish attitudes and perceptions of selected communities on the conflict between homosexual practices and traditional male circumcision TMC and vi to assess perceptions of Xhosa gay men on the use of TMC as an instrument to “convert” them to heterosexuality. The study was informed by Four 4 theoretical lenses: sociocultural theory, anomie theory, queer theory, and intersectionality theory. Methodologically, the objectives were investigated through a qualitative research method and data was collected accordingly. The study adopted a case study as its design. Data was collected through in-depth one-on-one interviews, focus group discussions, and key informants’ interviews. The study purposively selected eighty-two 82 participants and revealed the following findings: different lenses on South African constitution and homosexuality; different attitudinal facets of the development of same-sex sexuality in South Africa, opposed lenses on homosexuality being a natural phenomenon; intimate partner relationships among the gays in the initiation schools; behavioural the difference between gays and heterosexuals in the initiation school; establishing the nature of homosexuals’ dress code; gays downplaying TMC teachings in initiation schools; Intimate partner relationships among gays in the initiation school; homosexuality associated with modernization; effectiveness of TMC as a tool to achieve gays’ heteronormativity; and lastly, gays achieving heteronormativity through rape. This study concluded that TMC needs to renegotiate its terms of being a tradition of the contemporary epoch. Development of a distributed optical fiber sensor for geological applications

- Description: The purpose of the study was to develop a distributed optical fiber acoustic sensor for monitoring ground subsidence before collapse sinkholes form causing costly damage on infrastructure. Costs in excess of R1.3 billion have been incurred while dealing with sinkhole related measures in South Africa. Monitoring sinkholes and the presence of an early warning alert system can drastically reduce the impact, risk and cost caused by sudden ground collapse. A related goal was to construct a reliable collapse alert early warning system to facilitate disaster preparedness and avoid further damage from accidents. This was achieved by developing a spectroscopic shift monitoring algorithm which analysed changes in the subsurface vibration modes using ambient noise signals. For the first time to our knowledge, an optic fiber sensor with an early warning alarm, using ambient noise vibrations to detect and monitor sinkholes was developed at NMU. A polarisation-based, interferometric optical fiber seismic sensor was developed and compared to a commercial geophone. The fiber sensor exhibited superior performance in sensitivity, bandwidth, signal response and recovery times. The sensitivity of the optical fiber sensor was 0.47 rad/Pa surpassing the geophone sensitivity by 9.32%, and the bandwidth of 3.349kHz was 20 times greater for the optical fiber sensor. The fiber sensor was used to measure millisecond events as the impact duration of a bouncing ball was successfully obtained. It was used to detect sinkhole formation in the simulator model, designed. Ground collapse precursors were identified, and early warning alert was achieved using the spectral analysis algorithm, developed. The collapse precursor condition was identified as a functional combination of variations in the peak frequency, bandwidth and peak intensity. A distributed acoustic sensor was built to detect ambient noise induced subsurface signals. Vibrations were located along the 28km length of optical fiber with a relative error of 9.6%. The sensor demonstrated a frequency response range of 212.25Hz, an event distance precision of 224m with time resolution of 1.12µs, and a spatial resolution of 1km. The position of disturbance was measured within 300m of its actual point of 3.21km along the optical fiber. - Description: Communal rangelands are the main source of livestock feed for resource poor communal farmers. They are characterized by heavy stocking and poor management which is perceived to be the cause of the prevalent degradation hence the incessant calls for introduction of rotational grazing. Rotational grazing has been associated with improved rangeland condition and animal performance in commercial farms, hence the call that it needs to be introduced in communal areas. Management of communal rangelands within the rotational grazing context requires some fundamental understanding of the relationship between current rangeland use, socio-economic and ecological factors determining the present use of these areas. The objective of this study was to assess how historic tenure and patterns of use have influenced grazing practices and institutional structures, and to identify institutional and ecological factors determining present grazing strategies. Focus group discussions and questionnaire surveys in 11 communities revealed that villagers consider fences and paddocks as the best intervention to improve range management. Furthermore, it was shown that lack of strong local-level institutions, little or no knowledge of veld management, absence of rules and lack of seasonal restrictions on rangeland resource use are additional constraints that need to be considered for any rotational grazing intervention to be embraced. Communal areas vary in household head profiles, and this affects the livestock ownership patterns, which indirectly influences rangeland management. The fact that most of the income for communal area people is from state grants, makes farming secondary and the attention put on rangeland management would therefore be minimal. At present the weak local level institutions would therefoe make any plans to introduce rotational grazing difficult. Communal area grazing strategies are further influenced by rangeland heterogeneity caused by different factors. To understand these factors, the relationship between vegetation parameters in different patches and associated soil parameters was examined. Heterogeneity due to seasonal variation in the biomass of herbaceous vegetation was observed at Magwiji‘s sweetveld, with frequently selected patches having a significantly (p < 0.05) higher biomass in autumn (791 kg ha-1) and winter (528 kg ha-1), while in summer and spring there was no significant (p > 0.05) difference in biomass between frequently selected and less selected patches. The present situation in which communal areas support large livestock populations under continuous grazing is due to the fact that cattle would adjust to changes in forage availability by seeking higher biomass patches in times of forage scarcity as observed in Magwiji. At the coastal forest thornveld of Mnyameni the Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) showed that the first axis was significantly correlated with soil organic carbon (r = -1, p < 0.05). Furthermore, the species that were significantly correlated with the first axis were Cynodon dactylon and Pennisetum clandestinum. These species were mainly found in sites that were preferred in April and June. At the sourveld of Upper Mnxe the first axis was significantly correlated with soil pH (r = 0.9, p < 0.05). At this rangeland, sites selected in June were associated with alkaline soils; characterized by a history of human settlement and dominated by Eragrostis superba and Heteropogon contortus. Soil electrical conductivity (EC) separated species (r = 0.9; p < 0.05) along the first axis at Magwiji, with mountain top sites selected in April and June having low EC and dominated by Digitaria eriantha, Eragrostis superba and Andropogon appendiculatus. Rangeland heterogeneity is caused by various factors, ranging from human disturbance to topography. These factors have an effect on the soil properties, and therefore, vegetation and thus lead to the observed heterogeneity which shapes the utilization patterns of these rangelands, and hence their continued support of large populations of livestock. To understand the effects of seasonal and spatial variation in resource use pattern and implications on range management, differences in cattle activity patterns in relation to veld type, season, daytime, management type (kraaling) and forage quality were examined. A corporate strategy framework to increase financial performance in Zimbabwean firms

Firms do not operate in a vacuum, but within spheres where various factors around them affect their performances. To that end, heterogeneous firm performance is a common phenomenon that is influenced by a number of factors, including how management develops appropriate selections, trade-offs and calculated choices to be dissimilar from other players in the market in order to gain a competitive advantage that will lead to superior financial performance. A collection of actions that management puts in place to out-perform competing firms in order to achieve greater profitability is called corporate strategy. These plans of action include the effective management of the socio-political and cultural institutions in a manner beneficial to the organisation. This plan of action on the socio-political and cultural institutions gives rise to institutional strategic management. The formulation of corporate strategies is done through a process that involves a set of rules, ideas or beliefs called frameworks, which include the Resource Based Strategy Framework, Business Models, Innovation and Institutionalism. Research has shown that the financial performance of firms is driven by a number of factors, namely corporate strategy, industry competitiveness, operating environment and core competencies amongst other factors. There is a plethora of determinants for the performance of firms and the complexity in the current business environment that has contributed to some models becoming obsolete while others remain relevant. It is against this background that the primary research objective of establishing a corporate strategy framework used by Zimbabwean firms to increase financial performance was developed. To answer this primary research objective, secondary objectives to (a) determine the impact of the Resource-Based Strategy Framework on the financial performance of firms in Zimbabwe; (b) ascertain the impact of business models using Porter’s Generic Strategies Framework on the financial performance of firms in Zimbabwe; (c) determine the impact of the Institutional Strategy Framework on the financial performance of firms in Zimbabwe; (d) determine the impact of the Innovation Strategy Framework on the financial performance of firms in Zimbabwe; (e) establish the joint impact of the Resource-Based Strategy framework, Business Models, Institutional Strategies and Innovation Strategies on the financial performance of firms in Zimbabwe; and (f) establish other corporate strategy frameworks used by Zimbabwean firms to increase financial performance, were developed. The study population was the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE) listed firms that fairly represented all the major operating sectors and firms in Zimbabwe. The researcher adopted a mixed research design incorporating both qualitative and quantitative methods in order to best reflect the critical strategy elements that were increasing financial performance in Zimbabwean firms. Qualitative data was collected through interviews conducted with executive managers of ZSE firms. Triangulation was achieved by comparing and contrasting data collected from interviews to secondary data extracted from websites, reports and audited financial statements. Both qualitative and quantitative data analysis was done using RQDA, an open-source computer-aided data software. ZSE listed firms were categorised into the five sectors of basic materials, consumer goods, consumer services, financial services and industrials. These firms were further categorised into excellent, medium, poor and very poor performers. Collected data was analysed to establish strategies that were used by excellent, medium, poor and very poor firms to see if they were using the same and figure out the impact of the various strategy frameworks on the financial performance on Zimbabwean firms. Data was analysed using univariate, ordinal and binomial logistics regression analysis. These data analysis models confirmed that RBS was a significant driver of financial performance for ZSE listed firms when all the strategy frameworks were combined. However, evaluating the impact of each strategy framework separately showed that all the frameworks were significant in driving financial performance, with the exception of the Institutional Strategy Framework. All the firms were doing more or less the same on Institutional Strategy Framework (ISF), hence it could not be a predictor of financial performance under the regression models. However, the ISF had a high score on univariate evaluation method. Cultivation, nutritional and pharmacological evaluation of Celosia argentea (L) Kuntze: an endangered wild vegetable in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa

- Description: Green leafy vegetables are important in human nutrition, but their cultivation is limited to a few staple ones. These vegetables possess high nutritious and therapeutic properties that could help in achieving nutritional security and alleviating the burden of some diseases. A typical example is Celosia argentea, which in South Africa, is little known and grossly under-utilized despite its numerous nutritional and pharmacological values. The present study investigated the cultivation, nutritional and pharmacological potentials of C. argentea at three stages of maturity of two trials. Evaluation of cultivation in the greenhouse towards possible domestication of C. argentea included seed viability test, seed germination under varying temperatures (5, 10, 15, 20 25 30, 35, 40°C), light conditions (continuous light, continuous darkness, alternating light and dark (12h light/12 dark photoperiod) and sowing depths (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5cm). The nutritional evaluation assessed the proximal, mineral, vitamins and antinutrient content of the plant; while pharmacological potentials of C. argentea were evaluated by investigating the ultramorphology, phytochemical content, anti-oxidant, antimicrobial, toxicity and cell-based anti-inflammatory properties of the plant at different stages of growth. Germination experiment revealed that optimum seed germination requirements for C. argentea were 25°C, alternating light and dark regime and a sowing depth of 1cm. Microrphological assessment of C. argentea revealed that the leaves were amphistomatic; with the abaxial surface having higher stomata density. Characteristic, distinguishing protuberances were observed at the polar ends of the stomata on the adaxial surface of the plant epidermis, and the major elements on the foliar epidermis were beryllium, carbon, oxygen and potassium; while pigmentation and colouration, showing localization of bioactive compounds were mostly at the site where trichomes were abundant. Growth parameters and yield potential (plant height, stem girth, leaf area, number of leaves, number of branches, number of days to flowering, number of flowers as well as dry and fresh weight) of C. argentea showed that for agricultural practices on the field, increase in growth parameters should be expected around 4-5 weeks after transplanting while higher yield should be expected around 7-9 weeks after transplanting. The results encouraged cultivation during summer or late spring for best farm management. Proximal, mineral, vitamins and anti-nutrients content of C. argentea at three different maturity stages of two trials were performed using AOAC, ALASA and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer techniques. Results revealed that the pre-flowering stage of growth had the highest ash (28.15± 0.10 percent) and crude protein (25.80 ± 0.20 percent) contents. While post-flowering stage had the highest carbohydrate (28.51± 0.20 percent and 36.16± 0.22 percent), crude fibre (33.41± 0.87 percent) and energy (435.28± 27.6 percent) with low fat and moisture (8.43± 0.15 percent and 6.35±0.09 percent) contents respectively; while no marked demarcation in most mineral contents in all the growth stages was observed. Zinc was highest at the flowering stage of growth, while vitamin contents decreased as the plant approached maturation. Antinutrients content of the plant was not dependent on growth stage. Total phenols, flavonoids and proanthocyanidin content of C. argentea were evaluated colourimetrically, while the antioxidant potency of the aqueous, acetone and methanolic extracts was measured using 2,2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) models. All the solvent extracts of the flowering stage had the highest total phenolic (80.75±4.21GAE/g), flavonoids (946.19±7.87QE/mg) and proanthocyanidin contents (100.90±1.29 CE/g); with the acetone extracts showing significantly higher phytochemical content. The flowering stage exhibited the best radical inhibitory activity, with the methanol extract having the highest scavenging power for ABTS and DPPH radicals, while acetone extract showed the highest inhibition against FRAP and highest total antioxidant capacity. The antimicrobial potential of the aqueous acetone and methanolic extracts of C. argentea evaluated using agar dilution method against six bacteria (Klebsiella pneumonia, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus cereus) and four fungal strains (Candida glabarata, Candida albicans and Penicillium aurantiogriseum and Penicillium chrysogenum) showed that Streptococcus pyrogenes and P. aeruginosa were susceptible to the methanol extracts of all the growing phases of both trials at 10 mg/mL; while Klebsiella pneumoniae was susceptible at 10 mg/mL to only the methanol post-flowering extracts of both trials. C. albicans and P. aurantiogriseum were highly susceptible to all the extracts. Possible toxicity evaluated using brine shrimp lethality assay and calculation of LC50 against brine shrimp nauplii revealed that C. argentea was not toxic at any stage of maturity at all concentrations evaluated. Anti-inflammatory activities and cytotoxicity of C. argentea extracts evaluated using RAW 264.7 macrophages and 3T3-L1 cell lines revealed that the acetone extract of the flowering stage had moderate anti-inflammatory activity with no significant toxicity against activated macrophages. Findings from this study indicate that C. argentea is a safe functional leafy vegetable of high nutritional and pharmacological importance which can easily be cultivated and domesticated in South Africa. A sociological analysis of the experiences of Zimbabwean teachers in South Africa: the case of KwaZulu-Natal townships and township secondary schools

- Description: This thesis seeks to understand the social and cultural experiences of Zimbabwean teachers, as foreigners, in KwaZulu-Natal townships, and KwaZulu-Natal township secondary schools, in South Africa. It examines the ways in which Zimbabwean teachers negotiate the social, cultural, and institutional milieu of KwaZulu-Natal townships and secondary schools. In doing so, the thesis draws upon social interface theory, as this theory facilitates an examination and understanding of the ways in which the Zimbabwean teachers interpret the spaces (and lifeworld) of South Africans and, simultaneously, navigate their way in and through these spaces along social and cultural interfaces. While the focus is on the perspectives and practices of the Zimbabwean teachers, the thesis recognises and shows that their socio-cultural experiences are constituted and configured in significant ways by their daily encounters with South Africans. The fieldwork for the thesis involved primarily in-depth interviews with thirty Zimbabwean teachers residing in six selected KwaZulu-Natal townships (and teaching at six different secondary schools), as well as fifteen South African teachers, five school administrators and thirty other South African citizens. The sample of Zimbabwean teachers was stratified in relation to the different townships, as well as gender and the number of years teaching in South Africa, so as to investigate whether and how these variables may configure the socio-cultural experiences of these teachers. A consideration of variation in the number of years of teaching in South Africa in particular allowed for an examination of possible shifts in socio-cultural experiences over time, as negotiation along interfaces is an ongoing and contingent process. The findings demonstrate a range of experiences and challenges faced by Zimbabwean teachers in KwaZulu-Natal (with regard to both township and school life), some of which they share with South African teachers but many of which are unique to them. At the same time, there are important differences amongst Zimbabwean teachers in relation to how they interface with South African citizens and teachers. While some teachers negotiate local spaces through active socialising and assimilating into the lifeworld (township life of South Africans and the institutional culture of township schools), other teachers move through the space by way of isolation, withdrawal, and alienation. - Description: This thesis seeks to understand the social and cultural experiences of Zimbabwean teachers, as foreigners, in KwaZulu-Natal townships, and KwaZulu-Natal township secondary schools, in South Africa. It examines the ways in which Zimbabwean teachers negotiate the social, cultural, and institutional milieu of KwaZulu-Natal townships and secondary schools. In doing so, the thesis draws upon social interface theory, as this theory facilitates an examination and understanding of the ways in which the Zimbabwean teachers interpret the spaces (and lifeworld) of South Africans and, simultaneously, navigate their way in and through these spaces along social and cultural interfaces. While the focus is on the perspectives and practices of the Zimbabwean teachers, the thesis recognises and shows that their socio-cultural experiences are constituted and configured in significant ways by their daily encounters with South Africans. The fieldwork for the thesis involved primarily in-depth interviews with thirty Zimbabwean teachers residing in six selected KwaZulu-Natal townships (and teaching at six different secondary schools), as well as fifteen South African teachers, five school administrators and thirty other South African citizens. The sample of Zimbabwean teachers was stratified in relation to the different townships, as well as gender and the number of years teaching in South Africa, so as to investigate whether and how these variables may configure the socio-cultural experiences of these teachers. A consideration of variation in the number of years of teaching in South Africa in particular allowed for an examination of possible shifts in socio-cultural experiences over time, as negotiation along interfaces is an ongoing and contingent process. The findings demonstrate a range of experiences and challenges faced by Zimbabwean teachers in KwaZulu-Natal (with regard to both township and school life), some of which they share with South African teachers but many of which are unique to them. At the same time, there are important differences amongst Zimbabwean teachers in relation to how they interface with South African citizens and teachers. While some teachers negotiate local spaces through active socialising and assimilating into the lifeworld (township life of South Africans and the institutional culture of township schools), other teachers move through the space by way of isolation, withdrawal, and alienation.
