Bulimia Nervosa: a case study in cognitive psychotherapy

- Description: This project uses the case-study method to illustrate the application of integrating varied accepted modes of psychotherapeutic interventions. It concentrates on the first 22 out-patient sessions of therapy with a diagnosed bulimic, spanning a 6 month period. A brief summary of the subsequent 10 follow-up sessions is also given. The case presented is of a 22 year old female student diagnosed as bulimic (of 7 year duration), dysthymic and with a dependent personality disorder. She has symptoms of anxiety. She has a history of anorexia nervosa. Fairburn's (1985) cognitive-behavioural programme for bulimia was used initially. Its structured framework with the emphasis on the eating behaviour was an essential aspect in contributing to the success of the initial phase of the therapy. This patient had had previously experienced 8 sessions of non-directive depth psychotherapy which had confused and compounded her problems. The structure had provided her with a sense of control. In implementing the second stage of Fairburn's programme, where the focus is cognitive, the patient could no longer work in this this structured manner. The attempts to implement the standard cognitive techniques provided the catalyst for activating deeper underlying emotions and cognitions. Furthermore, this gave impetus to work actively with the interpersonal aspect of the therapeutic relationship. Young's (1989) model for identifying Early Maladaptive Schemas could be applied. The focus then moved from the behaviours and dealt with these schemas as activated in the therapeutic relationship. The patient was able to make links to her family and her past. The therapy proved successful, as not only were the behavioural symptoms alleviated, but also the patient's interpersonal problems which underlay her personality disorder were accessed. The patient had become more self-assertive, her mood had improved considerably, she was less concerned with body image and more accepting of herself. The impact of Malawi’s National Strategy on Inclusive Education: a case study analysis of two schools

Secondly, there is a disjuncture between NSIE as intended and as implemented in the sampled schools. Thirdly, the IE system lacks effective communication and responsive decision-making, especially in the monitoring process and school involvement. Fourthly, the study shows that IE implementation depends on a functional and well-stocked resource centre (RC) and the availability of enough qualified staff. - Description: This study sought to examine livelihood strategies adopted by black female street vendors in Makhanda, Eastern Cape. The street vending activities that were undertaken by the research participants included selling: cooked foods, fresh fruit and vegetables, eggs, and beauty products. This study used the Sustainable Livelihood Approach (SLA) to examine the livelihood strategies of black female street vendors in Makhanda. The SL approach was chosen as an ideal framework for a study of this nature as it holistically and traditionally focuses on vulnerable population groups around the world. More importantly, the SLA gives agency to these vulnerable groups, as it prioritizes their innovative techniques in mobilizing diverse assets at their disposal in order to survive. The study is, therefore, ideal as it also gives agency to selected black female street vendors by examining how they utilized diverse assets at their disposal to sustain their livelihoods. This study seeks to contribute to the ongoing debate on urban livelihoods and the informal economy in South Africa, focusing particularly on the different methods or strategies employed by black female street vendors to enhance the sustainability of street vending as a livelihood. Due to the nature of this study, which seeks to capture the lived experiences of the selected black female street vendors in Makhanda, qualitative research methodologies were used to collect and analyse data. This study proved street vending to be a survival strategy that is used by black unskilled women in pursuit of livelihoods. It argues that, faced with the socio-economic realities associated with high unemployment, street vending can be used by many to best support their households. When it comes to livelihood strategies, this study found that, livelihood diversification is the most common livelihood strategy adopted by street vendors in Makhanda, with the only difference being the type of diversification adopted. Two forms of livelihood diversification strategies were identified in this study, and these included: product diversification and income diversification. The conclusion drawn from the findings argues that the selected street vendors in Makhanda strategically used different assets accessible to them to enhance and sustain their livelihoods. Design of an LMS-mediated tutorial to support deep and effective engagement in the process of learning mathematics

- Description: Many institutions of Higher Learning have adopted a variety of Learning Management Systems (LMS) as platforms for e-learning implementation. However, the design and nature of LMS technologies present challenges to the design of LMS-based activities that engage students in learning to do mathematics. There are no clear guidelines or strategies for designing LMS-based activities that engage students in complex mathematical processes. Hence, using technologies in mathematics education often replicates instructivist positions and practices. Conversely, using constructivist principles, modes of mathematical engagement, and e-learning tools to mediate learning provides an integrated framework to transform the use of an LMS as a platform for e-learning implementation and promote deep engagement in mathematical learning. The objective of this study was to explore mechanisms that could be useful for conceiving activities to support the learning of Mathematics using an LMS-mediated tutorial. The design, redesign and evaluation of the e-tutorial are reported upon. In preparation for the study, an LMS-based tutorial was designed and developed to be used as a test-bed to investigate how these e-learning tools could support learning to do mathematics. A Trigonometry module, consisting of course content in the form of resources and tasks to help the students to explore, practice and apply right triangle concepts, was used to investigate and derive design strategies. A mixed method research approach with a reflexive self-study research design was used. A group of first-year university student volunteers studying mathematics in the mechanical engineering department were used to test the tutorial. The students were asked to do a series of tasks using the e-learning environment during the Mathematics tutorial period. Data was collected using in-class observations, interviews, screen capture videos, student-written responses, and system-generated data. All students were encouraged to complete a learning journal detailing their experiences during the tutorial using an LMS-based tool. The students were given no training, but a tutor (researcher) was available to answer any questions they may have had. Contradiction analysis was used to evaluate the data, compare purpose and practice and judge whether the activity or tool was fitted for the intended purpose. Findings were in the form of transformations of the e-tutorial system as it was developed. Among the most noteworthy contributory modifications were changing from 1) “read first, then do” to “do first, read when necessary”, 2) “work on the computer” to “work on paper then capture on the computer”, 3) “physically separated work with computer-enabled social contact”, to "individual computer work in face-to-face social settings.” 4) “single-level of resource provision” to “multi-level, demand-driven resource provision” and 5) “self-regulated” learning process regulation to “computer-assisted” learning process regulation. The discussion of these findings indicated that to enable students’ deep and effective engagement in the process of learning fundamental trigonometry within an LMS-mediated tutorial, one needs to design the system with some activities that can create a demand for knowledge, encourage rough work and face-to-face social interaction, supported by multi-level, demand-driven resources, and computer-assisted learning-process regulation. Remote sensing as a monitoring solution for water hyacinth (Pontederia crassipes) in the context of the biological control programme at Hartbeespoort Dam

Despite notable success with biological control of other invasive macrophytes, the plant remains as a problematic weed in many aquatic systems in South Africa, particularly due to the eutrophic status of many of its water systems, as well as the plant’s tolerance to cooler climatic conditions than most of its existing biological control agents. Hartbeespoort Dam, located about 30 kilometres west of Pretoria, South Africa, has been infamously infested with water hyacinth for decades, which impacts the important socioeconomic utility of the dam and functioning of natural ecological processes in the system. The dam has a long history of efforts to control water hyacinth, which include widespread herbicidal spray, mechanical removal and classical biological control programmes since the early 1990s - mostly with limited or short-lived success. However, after the introduction of a new, cold-tolerant biological control agent, Megamelus scutellaris Berg (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) in 2018 with an inundative release strategy, the water hyacinth dropped significantly from a maximum cover of about 45 percent (819 hectares) down to less than two percent (40 hectares) over a three-month period (November 2019 – January 2020). This was significant, as it marked the first successful biological control of water hyacinth in a eutrophic, temperate system in South Africa. However, due to the scale of Hartbeespoort Dam (1820 hectares) and the high spatiotemporal variation of the floating mats across time and space, quantifying and monitoring these rapid changes has proved difficult. In response to this problem, this thesis proposed a remote sensing solution to address the need for accurate, timely and readily accessible monitoring data of the water hyacinth population on the dam. Leveraging the temporally frequent (< 5 days revisit time) Sentinel-2 multispectral satellite data, as well as the powerful cloud-computing resources of Google Earth Engine, this thesis developed and deployed a relatively simple and robust index-based decision tree classification method to demonstrate the value of these technologies as an effective monitoring and analysis tool for monitoring large macrophyte infestations. To this end, several challenges had to be overcome in order to produce easily accessible data that was accurate and reliable. For example, due to the size of the Sentinel-2 Level-1C image dataset from August 2015 to March 2021 (n = 654), an automated process of filtering out clouded images was required. Additionally, the co-presence of algal and cyanobacterial blooms necessitated the development of a novel index, coined the Algae Resistant Macrophyte Index (ARMI), to deal with the challenges of accurate macrophyte detection. Therefore, the amount of incoming data at a specific point in time will overwhelm any current traditional data analysis method being deployed. Deep learning architectures have been applied in many fields, such as, in computer vision, machine vision, natural language processing, social network filtering, speech recognition, machine translation, bioinformatics, medical image analysis, and board game programs. They have produced results which are comparable to human expert performance. Hence, it is appealing to apply it to radio astronomy data. Image segmentation is one such area where deep learning techniques are prominent. The images from the new generation of telescopes have a high density of radio sources, making it difficult to classify the sources in the image. Identifying and segmenting sources from radio images is a pre-processing step that occurs before sources are put into different classes. There is thus a need for automatic segmentation of the sources from the images before they can be classified. This work uses the Unet architecture (originally developed for biomedical image segmentation) to segment radio sources from radio astronomical images with 99.8% accuracy. After segmenting the sources we use OpenCV tools to detect the sources on the mask images, then the detection is translated to the original image where borders are drawn around each detected source. These are compounded by built infrastructure, which is ageing, an increasing population and the impact of climate change. South Africa’s water issues are influenced by a myriad of factors such as weather patterns, governance issues, historical apartheid policies, structural integrity of ecological and built infrastructure, and general provision of services. The most vulnerable members of society usually positioned in low-income communities are the ones who mostly bear the brunt of these harsh conditions. To address water insecurities and challenges, South Africa has defined several Strategic Water Source Areas (SWSAs), which are important for water security in South Africa. The Living Catchments Project (LCP) is a collaborative project, situated in four catchments in South Africa, with the aim to strengthen the enabling environment for the governance of water in South Africa’s strategic water resource areas. The central focus of the LCP is on co-learning and co-creation through communities of practice in order to enable, collaborate, and amplify the practice of transformative social learning and improve the policy advice practice and engagement with the water sector to contribute to the Water Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Roadmap. This study is positioned in the LCP, which is also a case study for transformative innovation policy and Just Transitioning in South Africa. The aim of this study was to address the need for more substantive understanding of learning in co-management, and the evaluation of such learning, which was identified as a gap in the scientific literature, and which was confirmed through policy review. The study set out to explore expansive learning and co-management in the uMzimvubu catchment, which is one of the SWSAs in South Africa and forms part of the LCP, which in turn is part of the Transformation Innovation Policy Consortium’s cases of Just Transitioning. Cultural History Activity Theory (CHAT) was the foundational theory of this research, with a particular focus on 3rd generation activity analysis (Engeström, 1987), and formative intervention methodology, in which I was positioned as a formative interventionist researcher. I used individual interviews, focus group interviews, field observations, and Change Laboratory methods to identify activity systems, the shared object of activity, and to engage multi-voiced participants in resolution of contradictions to expand their learning. The study also identified indicators of learning relevant to co-management in a LCPs context. Monitoring of learning occurred in two different phases; before the expansive learning process (A-view), and after the expansive learning process (B-view). The Value Creation Framework tool adapted from Wenger et al. (2011) was used to identify indicators of learning. This study shows that the object of co-management of water resources in a catchment can be enhanced through learning platforms and processes that are collaborative and expansive. One of the study’s contributions to new knowledge lies in relation to the expansive learning process and how it expanded the learning around co-management in a Living Catchments Project context. A second contribution of the study shows that the expansive learning process embarked on qualitatively changed the nature of the indicators of learning in the catchment. A better set of indicators was attained following the expansive learning process, which are more aligned with the nature of transformative social learning. The study’s contributions can be summarised as offering insights into learning processes for co-management, as well as evaluation of these learning processes. - Description: This research aims to enhance the use of large-scale assessment data in South Africa by evaluating assessment validity by means of multidimensional item response theory and its associated statistical techniques, which have been severely underutilised. Data from the 2014 administration of the grade 6 Mathematics annual national assessment was used in this study and all analyses were conducted using the mirt package in R. A two parameter logistic item response theory model was developed which indicated a clear alignment between the model parameters and difficulty specifications of the test. The test was found to favour learners within the central band on the ability scale. An exploratory five dimensional item response theory model was then developed to investigate the alignment with the test specifications as evidence for construct validity. Significant discrepancies between the factor structure and the specifications of the test were identified. Notably, the results suggest that some items measured an ability that was not purely mathematical, such as reading ability, which would distort the test’s representation of Mathematics ability, disadvantage learners with lower English literacy, and reduce the construct validity of the test. Further validity evidence was obtained by differential item functioning analyses which revealed that fourteen items function differently for learners from different provinces. Although possible reasons for the presence of differential item functioning among provinces were not discussed, its presence provided sufficient evidence against the validity of the test. In conclusion, multidimensional item response theory provided an effective and rigorous approach to establishing the validity of a large-scale assessment. - Description: This study employs high-resolution hydraulic modelling techniques to inform the planning of rehabilitation interventions in unchanneled valley-bottom palmiet wetlands, using the upper Kromme River wetlands as a case study. It investigates the impact of geomorphic processes on the morphology of the valley, how changes in valley morphology affect the flow characteristics (velocity, stream power, depth) of the river, and how these changes affect the geomorphic dynamics of the wetlands. An aerial LiDAR survey was conducted for a 23km-long reach of the upper Kromme River where the wetlands are situated. A high-resolution (5 m) DTM was created from the LiDAR data to examine the valley morphology. Focusing on three major wetland basins, the relationship between valley morphology and geomorphic processes was examined using high-resolution imagery that accompanied the LiDAR survey and Google Satellite imagery. The hydraulic modelling software HEC-RAS was used to investigate the spatial variation in velocity, stream power, and water depth down the surveyed length of the river. The model outputs provide insight into the effect of valley morphology on flow characteristics. The river appears to have a graded longitudinal profile, such that there is a systematic reduction in slope down its length. Water flowing down the river works, through the processes of erosion and deposition, to control the longitudinal slope, channel planform, and geometry to create a valley with a gentle longitudinal slope (approximately 1%) and a broad, near-horizontal valley-bottom in the mountainous landscape of the Cape Fold Mountains. The overall form of the Kromme River valley and wetlands is primarily a consequence of repeated cycles of cutting and filling. Tributary alluvial fans control the initiation of gully erosion in the wetlands, but their effect is diminished in a downstream direction. Despite a 10-fold increase in discharge down the 23km length of river for a given flood magnitude, there is no significant increase in flow velocity, stream power, or depth in a downstream direction. Consequently, the kinetic energy of the water in the lower wetland basin is surprisingly low. These conditions favour the establishment of palmiet. Flows in eroded reaches are much higher than in non-eroded reaches where discharge is spread across a broad valley bottom. In terms of palmiet establishment and regeneration, this means that areas dominated by depositional processes are best suited to the establishment of palmiet. Based on this information, optimal sites to trial new wetland rehabilitation strategies that employ palmiet were selected. This work supports the importance of understanding the role of geomorphology in wetland structure and dynamics when approaching wetland rehabilitation and is likely to be more sympathetic to natural processes than current interventions. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Geography, 2023

- Description: This study employs high-resolution hydraulic modelling techniques to inform the planning of rehabilitation interventions in unchanneled valley-bottom palmiet wetlands, using the upper Kromme River wetlands as a case study. An aerial LiDAR survey was conducted for a 23km-long reach of the upper Kromme River where the wetlands are situated. A high-resolution (5 m) DTM was created from the LiDAR data to examine the valley morphology. Focusing on three major wetland basins, the relationship between valley morphology and geomorphic processes was examined using high-resolution imagery that accompanied the LiDAR survey and Google Satellite imagery. The dialogue between the suggested recommendations and the case- material served to illustrate the point that Gendlin's recommendations are of great value in the treatment of the silent adolescent. The value of these recommendations lie in their ability to comment meaningfully on the process of therapy with the silent patient by providing not only skills and techniques, but also a conceptual framework within which to contextualize the therapy. The recommendations were also found to be sensitive to some of the key issues of relevance to adolescence as a developmental phase.
