It was concluded that hybrid electrospun fibers provide great potential as active photocatalysts for oxidizing organic pollutants using singlet oxygen as an oxidant.

- Description: Starting with the end result, the above transcription is the conclusion I came to after sitting with Laina Gumboreshumba for many hours, watching the videos she made during her recent doctoral research on the tshikona reedpipe dance of the Venda of Limpopo Province in the extreme north of South Africa. The transcription shown in Figure 2 is a skeleton version of the full pipe sound that contains all the information needed to grasp the structure of the sound and teach it or play it. There are always seven different pipes. A full tshikona group has far more than the seven pipes (nanga) shown, because all seven pipe numbers are doubled in every octave present in a group, so there may be up to four or more Pipe 1s, Pipe 2s, etc, of different sizes. All the Pipe 1s play the same pattern together, all the Pipe 2s etc. There are usually four octaves in all, with an incomplete octave of a few higher pitched pipes at the top (phalana). A popular size for a group according to group leaders (malogwane) is twenty eight pipes, which may include some pitch duplicates. A festive performance can number well over one hundred players. The music is heptatonic as you can see from the transcription, and hear for yourself from CD track 1 accompanying this issue of African Music. A chart showing the tuning is included as Figure 1 1 at the end of this article. This article does not address the pipe names; they are simply numbered Pipes 1 to 7, in the order of entry in Mr Netshivhale’s groups. - Description: The business sector has a substantial role in addressing current environmental issues and concerns. Consequently, there is a growing adoption of corporate sustainability principles and practices across all market sectors. This study examined four developed and four emerging stock markets and the sustainability reporting practices of the top 20 and bottom 20 companies in each. The results illustrate that the developed market sector was more advanced in its corporate sustainability reporting, both in the proportion of companies issuing a sustainability report (approximately 60 per cent) and the proportion of company webpages dedicated to sustainability reporting. This difference was largely due to the effect of the top 20 companies. There was little difference between developed and developing markets when only the bottom 20 companies were considered, of which less than one-third provided sustainability reports. These results show that sustainability reporting is prevalent in both developed and developing markets, especially among market leading companies, but that overall, most developing markets have some catching up to do.

We evaluated this facilitation effect using water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and a weevil (Neochetina eichhorniae) and compared the reductions in photosynthetic rates between leaves subject to herbivory by adult weevils sterilized with 3.5% chlorine bleach, to those that were unsterilized. The results showed that weevils carried both fungi and bacteria, transferred these to leaves on which they fed, and that microbes and biomass removal contributed almost equally to the 37% decrease in photosynthetic productivity. Hence, maximising the effectiveness of using arthropods that damage leaf surfaces for biocontrol requires the presence of microorganisms that are deleterious to plants.

These fibers were used as a solid support material for the immobilization of oxovanadium(IV) which was achieved via a reaction with vanadyl sulfate. The oxovanadium(IV)-functionalized nanofibers were used as heterogeneous catalysts for the oxidation of thioanisole under both batch and pseudo-continuous flow conditions with great success. Under batch conditions near quantitative oxidation of thioanisole was achieved in under 90 min, even after four successive catalytic reactions. Under continuous conditions, excellent conversion of thioanisole was maintained throughout the period studied at flow rates of up to 2 mLh−1. This study, therefore, proposes that electrospun polybenzimidazole nanofibers, with their small diameters, impressive chemical and thermal stability, as well as coordinating benzimidazole group, may be a desirable support material for immobilization of homogeneous catalysts.

- Description: The catalytic fibers have been fabricated by the electrospinning of a copolymer of styrene and 2-(2′-hydroxy-4′-ethenylphenyl)imidazole {p(ST-co-VPIM)} followed by a reaction with a methanolic vanadyl solution to afford the oxovanadium(IV)-containing poly(styrene-co-4′-ethenyl-2-hydroxyphenylimidazole) fibers {p(ST-co-VPIM)-VO fibers}. The relationship between polymer concentration and fiber diameter was investigated, and at high concentration (20 wt%) the fibers were quite large (average diameter of 3.8 μm) but as the concentration was reduced fibers of much lower diameter were produced (0.6 μm using 8 wt%). The BET surface area for p(ST-co-VPIM) fibers (0.6 μm diameter) was 47.9 m2 g−1 and functionalization of p(ST-co-VPIM) with vanadyl resulted in an increase in surface area to 60.7 m2 g−1 for p(ST-co-VPIM)-VO. The presence of vanadyl was confirmed by XPS and EPR. The EPR spectral analyses depicted complex speciation of vanadium within these polymer supports. These catalytic fibers were applied under batch and continuous flow conditions for the catalytic oxidation of thioanisole using hydrogen peroxide. The continuous flow method gave excellent and constant conversion throughout the 10 h period studied. The leaching of vanadium from the fiber support was 4% over the 10 h period indicating a significant stability of the material.

The relationship between polymer concentration and fiber diameter was investigated, and at high concentration (20 wt%) the fibers were quite large (average diameter of 3.8 μm) but as the concentration was reduced fibers of much lower diameter were produced (0.6 μm using 8 wt%). The BET surface area for p(ST-co-VPIM) fibers (0.6 μm diameter) was 47.9 m2 g−1 and functionalization of p(ST-co-VPIM) with vanadyl resulted in an increase in surface area to 60.7 m2 g−1 for p(ST-co-VPIM)-VO. The presence of vanadyl was confirmed by XPS and EPR. The EPR spectral analyses depicted complex speciation of vanadium within these polymer supports. These catalytic fibers were applied under batch and continuous flow conditions for the catalytic oxidation of thioanisole using hydrogen peroxide. The continuous flow method gave excellent and constant conversion throughout the 10 h period studied. The leaching of vanadium from the fiber support was 4% over the 10 h period indicating a significant stability of the material.

The decrease in vulnerability between lowveld and highveld river sections was mainly a function of low water temperatures (8–12˚C) associated with increasing altitude. 4. Oreochromis niloticus is already established in the lower catchment of the Limpopo River basin where indigenous congenerics are at an extinction risk through hybridization and competition exclusion. Oreochromis niloticus, therefore, poses an ecologically unacceptable risk to river systems in the upper catchment where it is yet to establish. The current risk assessment model provides a useful preliminary framework for the identification of river systems that are vulnerable to an O. niloticus invasion where conservation measures should be directed and implemented to prevent its introduction and spread within the Limpopo river system.

The warm temperatures and high nutrient levels in estuaries favour fast growth (Blaber 1973a), and fish spend their first year of life in these environments, migrating back out to sea after reaching approximately 120 mm SL. Some individuals remain trapped in closed estuaries, where they may reach sizes greater than 200 mm SL (James et al. 2007a). Rhabdosargus holubi is the dominant estuarine-dependent marine teleost species recorded in permanently open and temporarily open/closed estuaries in the warm-temperate region, which spans the south, south-east and east coast of South Africa (Harrison 2005). The species is also an important component of the linefishery in many SouthAfrican estuaries (10–15.6% by number) (Pradervand and Baird 2002), particularly in Eastern Cape estuaries (Cowley et al. 2003). These figures underestimate the presence of R. holubi, as most individuals making use of estuaries are young, feeding predominately on filamentous macroalgae and diatom flora, and are generally too small to be caught with hook and line (De Wet and Marais 1990). However, there were no significant differences in 13C partitioning between the Bt transgenic rice line (Bt) and Ck. The phthalocyanine complexes functionalized on polystyrene and polysulfone polymer fibers could be applied in the degradation of 4-chlorophenol, 4-nitrophenol, and methyl orange with 4-chlorophenol being much more susceptible to degradation while methyl orange was the least. Also polymer fibers of polystyrene were found to be reusable.

- Description: In this work, a comparative study of photodegradation of methyl orange, an azo dye, in homogeneous aqueous solution of a quarternized cationic zinc phthalocyanine and a heterogeneous catalytic system based on the same phthalocyanine anchored on polysulfone polymer fiber is presented. In both cases, conversion involved the azo bond of the dye with no detectable opening up of the aromatic benzene rings. The reaction kinetics in both cases were consistent with first order with the conversion occurring in the homogeneous system being faster than when the functionalized polymer fiber was used. The reaction products consisted of a coupling product as well as a series of oligopolymeric products.
