The idea failed owing to the narrow loyality of the various peoples of their own minor chiefs. Those who had proposed the amalgamation sang, "Leave the fools alone," resolving to carry out their intentions at some future date.   • Description: The Busumbu phosphate mines employ many Europeans, Indians and Africans. But what phosphate is used for is a bit of a mystery to the native miners. It is of course, a most important fertiliser. What it will be used for , they sing, will be known. In the meanwhile labourers are many, Europeans, Indians and Africans. The tapping of the players heel on the ground can be heard throughout this recording. Usually the players of these lyres wear an anklet of metal iron bells on that leg. The Gisu cannot be said to be the best exponents of the lyre but they belong to the Nilotic tradition of playing. Topical song with seven string Litungu lyre and leg bells.

  • Description: The leader is well knon in Tabora as a cafe entertainer particularly for his humorous interjections - he starts by introducing himself by name. The record was made in a small room which serves as a club and opens out directly onto the street. The small xylophone was said to have come from the other side of Lake Tanganyika in the Congo from the Manyema people. Many members of Congo tribes have migrated into Tanganyika across the lake on account of the trade by the railway to coast used first by the Arabs and later by the railway to Dar-es-Salaam. The sons of these men who still claim to be tribesmen of the Congo were born in Tanganyika and speak and sing only in Swahili. The style is not local and perhaps originates in the Albertville region of Southern Congo. The tone of voice of these cafe singers is typical of those whose major payment is in kind, whic after a while blurs the edge of their voices and their performances. The fingering of the single string is done by the inside of the 2nd segment of the fingers of the left hand and not by the tips of the fingers. The open string was tuned to 182 vs. The string was made of twisted Wazi bark, it had a small friction pad of Ilala palm leaf (koko) wound onto where the reed bow (uta) was applied to the string.   • Description: This story, told by an old woman, of the handsome young man and his jealous mother is almost identical with a similar story I found amongst the Karanga of Southern Rhodesia in 1932. The story concerns a handsome young man who wanted to get married but his jealous mother made him promise that he would not marry any girl who ate food cooked by her. Girl after girl was turned away until one discovered the secret pact, refused the mother's food and married the handsome son. The Ngoni of the Jiri clan came up through the southern regions of what became Southern Rhodesia sacking the settlement at Zimbabwe on their way. It is clear that they must have captured a girl from that region who bore her master children to whom she taught her own home stories in Karanga and they in turn handed them on to the next generation. In Bikita district Southern Rhodesia, the chorus sings:- "Tiende gore tiende gore" instead of the Ngoni in this version. "Ce ce gore, ce ce gore." Story with song

  • Description: This song were sung in the old days after raiding parties when the Kipsigis would go out to steal cattle of neighbouring tribes. The men singing these songs held tall, well made assegais of Masai type, and wore large ostrich feather head-dresses, oval in shape like collars, suspended from chin to the tip of the head at an oblique anglw. It was raining hard at the time and the songs had to be recorded in a thatched shed which did not help the singers and somewhat dampened their voices. Old fighting song.
