- Description: Out of a total of 236 active correctional centres across South Africa, only 5.5% of these cater to the needs of juvenile offenders, and none of these are located within the immediate Port Elizabeth area. This means that in their already fragile state, children from Port Elizabeth and the immediate surrounding areas are sent away from their families and support base to serve their sentence. Therefore, a need for a Juvenile Detention Centre within the Port Elizabeth area was realized. In this treatise an investigative study of existing Juvenile Detention Centres was carried out to which an understanding of the building typology, nature of the site and technical requirements was formulated. The site selected in Schauderville conforms to the site selection criteria established, and enhances the link to Nerina One Stop Child Justice Centre. The primary focus of the study was to design a building to provide secure residential care for juvenile offenders, offering a range of programmes to assist their rehabilitation back into society. The outcome, is presented as a set of architectural drawings and a model(s).

- Description: During the past decade bullying has received growing attention in organizational research. Workplace bullying is a complex phenomenon with a variety of situational, dispositional and systemic influences and it has been defined as “status-blind interpersonal hostility that is deliberate, repeated and sufficiently severe as to harm the targeted person's health or economic status” (Namie, 2003:3). A literature overview revealed the destructive consequences of bullying, such as trauma, suicide, depression, anxiety, stress, lowered self-esteem, anger and a lessening of productivity for both the individuals and the organizations concerned. This study presents the perceptions of staff members, in the form of recognized trade union representatives, of workplace bullying at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. The theoretical framework that informed the study comprised the dispositional and the ecological model that emphasised Ubuntu and the cultural values of the University. The research approach was carried out through qualitative and exploratory methods. Through primary and secondary data collection, a purposive sample of semi-structured interviews was collected in the context of the aim and the objectives of the study. It analysed the importance of an anti-bullying policy, management styles, power imbalances, the impact of bullying on staff and institution health and explored the existing supportive systems that deal with grievances procedures. This study concludes with concrete evidence that workplace bullying existed in Nelson Mandela University and there were no policies to effect control over perpetrators’ acts. Based on the findings of the study, recommendations are made regarding a strategy on how management can effectively address bullying complaints without prejudice and discrimination, such as an anti-bullying policy, and creating continuous awareness of the phenomenon.

- Description: This treatise is born out of preoccupation with Identity, Culture and Architecture. Through the study of the fragility of the South-African Chinese community: their double heritage, their quest for a sense of place and permanence with the establishment of Chinese Schools that maintain the Chinese culture. It begins with identifying their almost unstable and fragmented nature of movement, their struggle to find a ‘place’ in Port Elizabeth, especially after the establishment of the Group Areas Act of 1960 and their fight against apartheid and discrimination. It becomes clear that migration, racial segregation, confusion, forced removals, and displacement have been their legacy in South Africa. The purpose of this document is to investigate the symbolic nature of architecture, and how it can be used as a tangible medium to bring about an affirmation of identity, and create a sense of place for the future; giving credence to the celebration of culture and social interaction. Through the use of literature reviews, informal interviews, desktop research, analysis, precedent studies and other qualitative studies; there will be an understanding of the community in terms of how they came about settling in South Africa; their migratory patterns due to forced removals and the current status of the community in terms of cultural revolution; understanding the cultural issues the community face; in the establishment of a centralised symbolic precinct that allows for the celebration and promotion of culture. Through the design of the Chinese Cultural School, it will be demonstrated that in order to create a sense of place for the Chinese community, aiding in integration and restoration; one will need to engage in the argument of the vitality of authentic architecture, the vernacular language of a particular culture, and the subjectivity of identity especially in a context outside of its homeland.

Conflict analysis with a focus on community polarisation: a case study of a wind energy project in Switzerland
- Authors: Bachmann, Melanie
- Date: 2018

- Description: Switzerland, like many other countries, wants to expand the production and usage of renewable energies, including wind energy. However, wind energy causes much conflict due to the emissions and possible impacts on the people, nature and landscape. In the canton of Glarus a wind energy project called LinthWind is currently projected. This has resulted in a public dispute involving several parties and members of the community. In opposition to the project, the association LinthGegenWind was formed with the aim of keeping the area free from wind turbines. The project developer, as well as LinthGegenWind, are organising information events and provide information through other platforms. The aim of this research is to provide the community with a thorough understanding of the conflict, including its dynamics and possible destructive processes. Through the conduction of conflict analysis, it investigates the conflict evolving around the project LinthWind. With the help of an online questionnaire, the opinions of the participants regarding the project and also the factors influencing the opinion-formation were enquired. This allowed for an examination of the polarization of the community and the factors contributing to it. The conflict analysis presents detailed information regarding the conflict history and background, the parties involved, issues under contention, sources and causes of the conflict, driving factors and the dynamics. Many factors indicate that the dispute is in an escalating phase. It was further shown that the affected community is clearly polarised regarding the project LinthWind. The polarisation is most likely enhanced by certain measures applied by the parties and the voting process. Independently gathered information by the people themselves seem to be the strongest influencing factors for the opinion formation. The success of the tactics applied by the project developer and the association opposing the project vary regarding their influence on the opinion formation. Missing communication between the parties and a polarised community exacerbates effective conflict management. In the case of LinthWind, a forum is therefore suggested where communication and information – the basics for constructive conflict management – are enabled.

- Description: Fashion visually communicates identity. The clothing one wears influences how others perceive and interact with one. The relationship between fashion and identity is important, since fashion communicates aspects of identity without verbal communication. Identity formation and influences would therefore also affect fashion choices. These fashion choices are referred to as fashion identities. Various aspects influence the development of identity. Social interaction and media are two of the main influencers. In contemporary society these two influencers have been combined through social media platforms. This leads to the research questions: “What influence does social media have on identity development?”, “What influence would social media have on fashion identities?” and “Could online fashion content be utilised as a guide in the fashion design process?” These research questions are addressed through both theoretical research and online questionnaire responses from participants. The study consists of two components, namely the theoretical component and a practical component. The two components support, inform and validate one another’s findings. The study found that multiple identity types (personal, social and role) collectively form a person’s identity. The multiplicity of identities makes the representation process unique. Fashion identity can represent each of the identity types, separately or collectively. Furthermore, social media’s fashion content influences online users’ fashion identity and could lead to follow-through purchasing. In order to test the theoretical findings, eight of the questionnaire participants were selected for the practical component. The researcher interpreted their questionnaire responses and fashion content from social media platforms they had submitted with the questionnaire. The analysis and interpretation were used to design eight sketch-ranges. From these eight, two ranges were selected for physical production. The eight participants were asked for feedback pertaining to whether the designs captured their fashion identity and communicated aspects of this identity. The responses affirmed that designs had the necessary appeal suggesting that online fashion content can be used as a guide to the design process, in order to encapsulate identity representation.

The state of constitutionalism in Uganda: 1962-2018

- Language: English

- Description: This Thesis examines the state of constitutionalism in Uganda between 1962 and 2018. The central question which it seeks to answer is: ‘why did Ugandan governments persistently fail to adhere to the basic requirements of the doctrine of constitutionalism between 1962 and 2018?’ In answering this question, which has challenged and continues to challenge many academicians, politicians, government officials, researchers and the international community alike, the Thesis adopts the Theory of Neo-patrimonialism as a theoretical lens through which the behaviours of the post-independence presidents of Uganda are examined. The Thesis discovers that, indeed, Neo-patrimonialism is a fundamental framework for analysing and explaining constitutionalism in post-independence Uganda. Against this backdrop, the Thesis concludes that, the collective behaviours of Uganda’s post-independence presidents viewed through the lens of neo-patrimonialism are more fundamental in understanding the failure of democracy and good governance in Uganda than the country’s structural problems of constitutionalism. The originality of the Thesis is in: (a) its being the first comprehensive investigation into why Ugandan governments have persistently failed to adhere to the basic requirements of the doctrine of constitutionalism for the entire period of 56 years (1962-2018) of post-independence Uganda; and (b) its being the first study to apply the Theory of Neo-patrimonialism in explaining the volatile nature and state of constitutionalism in Uganda. The contribution of the Thesis to the existing knowledge lies in its; (a) generation of detailed and well-researched information about the volatility of constitutionalism in Uganda between 1962 and 2018, (b) recommendation of strategies that should be adopted to effectively enhance consititutionalism in Uganda, and (c) authentication of the validity of the claims that despite its shortcomings, Neo-patrimonialism is a Theory which not only continues to define and drive African politics but its application can suitably be used to explain the volatile nature of constitutionalism in post-independence Uganda and the rest of Africa.

- Description: The adoption of a critical spatial perspective is imperative, if social justice is to be performed in urban environments, according the urban theorist Edward Soja. From this perspective of a socio-spatial dialectic, understood using Lefebvre’s ideas around the social production of space and the right to the city, the current spatial conditions of Port Elizabeth are seen as perpetuating past constructions of inequity. In these constructions of inequity large, systematically oppressed groups of the public are forced to traverse across segregating urban barriers to access the opportunity and advantages of living in an urban system. This condition continues to disadvantage those it was historically set up to undermine, on economic and social terms. This condition subverts these urban nomads, who are those forced into transience to access urban opportunity. Korsten is investigated as a key transition space in the Port Elizabeth area, straddling the impoverished north and wealthy south, as one of the key spaces where the urban nomad moves through to access better resourced parts of the city. The space of Korsten is understood to be a key domain for the urban nomad in Port Elizabeth and is thereby an appropriate place for intervention to intensify the city and improve urban quality, thus dignifying and enriching the lives of citizens and improving equity in the city. The notion of opportunity is focused on as the catalytic vehicle for urban quality to be improved, ultimately resulting in the design of Korsten as an urban resources centre with new educational and economic resources as a central structuring element in a re-scripted field of resources. The architectural design is produced within the paradigm of field conditions. This results in a design product which integrates as a part of a field condition of public resources in Korsten. A qualitative methodology is adopted within the critical research paradigm and will use methods of desktop surveys, literature reviews and participant observation to collect data.

- Description: This study serves as a contribution to the literature on the music of the Moravian Church with specific reference to the South African Moravian music heritage. The Moravian Church music heritage is documented through the lens of Coloured composers of Moravian church music. In my study, I highlight the origins of the Moravian Church and its underlying philosophies by focusing on important figures and treasures of the Moravian Church. I provide a brief outline of the Moravians’ contribution to education and music. In the study I discuss the importance of record-keeping and rich hymnody of the Moravian church. I also discuss the doctrine, worship and sacraments of the Moravian Church. The literature study provides the history of the music of the American Moravian Church. This serves as a basis for comparison with the Moravian Church music tradition in South Africa, which is discussed in chapter four of this study. Furthermore, I provide an account of the history of the Moravian Church in South Africa. I use the qualitative research method of case studies to detail the music departments of a selected number of congregations within the Moravian Church of South Africa. Chapter five contains biographies of South African Moravian composers. This research adds to the body of new knowledge through the provision of a comprehensive list of South African Moravian composers and provides the first annotated bibliography of their works. Finally, my study concludes with the provision of a theoretical framework for the establishment of a Moravian Music Foundation based on the North American Moravian Music Foundation model.

The design of a Memorial Park and a Promatorium complex in Humewood Extention, Port Elizabeth

- Type: Thesis , Masters , MArch

- Description: This treatise is the result of an initial interest in the concept of ‘terrain vague’, the phenomenon of disconnected spaces that are internal to the city yet exist outside the effective and functioning networks of the urban system (Sola-Morales 1995, 120). The notion of terrain vague informs the theoretical preoccupation of this study and sets the basis on which the contextual and programmatic concerns are considered and explored. The harbour precinct of Port Elizabeth was selected as the focus area for the study, in which the characteristics of the terrain vague were uncovered through a series of maps, diagrams and photographs. The role of the cemetery as a type of terrain vague in the urban fabric is simultanelously investigated. The study refers to Richard Weller’s interpretation of the nature of the contemporary city and principles of landscape urbanism as a basis for developing ways of approaching the city and it’s spaces of terrain vague.Through this, the study is situated predominantly in the ecological discourse. The use of precedant studies as a means of exploring the application of the theoretical principles discussed in this study is key to providing the reader with a contextual understanding and clarity. The architectural intervention proposes a memorial park in the harbour precinct. This aims to generate a spatial awakening of the terrian vague. By reclaiming the denatured landscape (oil tank farm) and re-scripting it as a culturally significant area that is re-integrated into the public realm, the opportunity to rehabilitate the ecological flows of the city is realised. The design of a promatorium complex within the proposed memorial Park aims to re-introduce the funerary landscape into the city and in doing so challenges the threat of cemetries remaining as spaces of terrain vague. The promatorium complex is seen as a facility that supports the functions of the memorial park as a commemorative landscape in the 21st century. In all this intervention aims to transform a disregarded wasteland into an operational landscape. The aim is to enhance the ecological systems of the city and by extension to reconcile the interface between man and nature.

- Description: This treatise addresses the architectural challenge of designing a High Performance Centre (HPC), serving South African Sailing (SAS), to be located in Port Elizabeth’s harbour. Designing a facility which caters speciffically to the functional requirements of sailing racing and recreation will cater to the needs of SAS, whilst upgrading the state of Port Elizabeth’s oceanic recreational facilities, thereby boosting the local tourism sector by establishing Port Elizabeth as South Africa’s watersport capital. The current status of the harbour as an area undergoing a redevelopment from a heavy industrial focus to a recreational and commercial waterfront provides the opportunity for an architectural intervention which spearheads this shift, whilst addressing the postindustrial landscape which remains. A study of the nature of the sport of sailing is conducted in order to determine the requirements of facilities catering for sailing racing and recreation, and to supplement an investigation of the typology of the HPC which, through the study of precedents, clarifies its specific nature and characteristics. This results in the development of a set of site selection criteria, which inform the best possible location for such an intervention within the harbour. In depth contextual analysis is conducted in order to determine role of the harbour within PE’s urban, ecological and historical fabrics, from which the current development plans of the Nelson Mandela Bay Development Agency and Transnet are outlined so as to understand the direction in which the future of the PE harbour is headed, and to align an architectural response with this vision. This analysis sets up a number of contextual constraints and informants which, with the aid of phenomenological concepts of place-making and materiality, the principles architectural responses to post-industrial landscapes, and the nature of the relationship between architecture and water, guide the design process, ensuring an appropriate response to the site.

- Description: While citizens require products and services to meet their needs, government goes about designing systems and processes to meet that need through the setting of goals and objectives. Many methods are adopted for that to happen. However, one of the ways that this occurs is through legislation and regulations and the formation of public entities. On the other hand, strategy is needed to devise techniques and plans to meet needs, goals and aspirations of government in the most efficient manner. At face value it would seem that the enactment of certain legislation and regulations seems to make the need for strategy obsolete especially since there is proliferation of national, provincial and local strategies that only need implementation. The purpose of this research is to determine the influence of legislation and regulations on strategy in public entities focusing on the Eastern Cape Province and using the Eastern Cape Development Corporation as a case study. The study focused on the assessment of the relationship between the public entities and the shareholder through the use of legislation and regulations. The context for the research is prefixed on creating an understanding of the public administrative system and especially the components of the New Public Management approach that deal with the principal-agent and public choice theory. The study assessed the public administrative system and its relationships in order to locate the use of legislation and regulations and public entities to deliver products and services to citizens. Likewise the concept of strategy was examined from three perspectives namely that strategy is about goal consciousness, strategy involves leadership and strategy is multifaceted in its nature. In order to undertake the study a document review was conducted on the legislation and regulations, semi-structured interviews were held with the principal or shareholder and a questionnaire was administered to executives and senior managers in public entities in the Eastern Cape Province. The findings revealed that there is a relationship between legislation and regulations and strategy on the one hand and on the other strategy appears to be ineffective due to a lack of planning, key role players’ involvement in the process, leadership, inflexible compliance and restrictive conditions. The research further found that strategy involves implementation of legislation and regulations which support the rise of the regulatory state. The study proposes a normative model that is built around defining the nature of strategy and predetermining the definition of roles in the system.

“But darkness was here yesterday”: an examination of travel writing and colonial narrative constructions of Africa within its sub-genres across three centuries

- Description: This study analyses the modern twenty-first century travel writing of Paul Theroux’s Dark Star Safari (2003) to reveal its sustained impetus towards colonial discursive constructions of Africa. In doing so, it will examine the continuation of colonial methods and techniques of literary representation in travel texts by illustrating the early ‘images’ of Africa and Africans as they appear in Henry M. Stanley’s non-fictional travel text Through the Dark Continent (1878) and Joseph Conrad’s fictional travel novella Heart of Darkness (1899). With the purpose of producing a critical literary analysis, this study will employ discourse analysis to interrogate the implications of the continued employment of colonial rhetoric and language by Theroux in his representations and portrayals of Africa and African citizens. It has been found that there is an unproblematised acceptance – even reverie – of colonial sentiment and nostalgia evident in representations of Africa in modern travel literature. Literary representations of this nature continue to portray Africa as the ‘savage’, ‘backward’, ‘violent’ and ‘inferior’ continent that it had signified to travel writers during the colonial epoch. Africans, as they are portrayed in this narrative tradition, are ascribed the same denotations where their subjectivities, individualities, cultures, beliefs, ideologies and personhood are encapsulated under the conceptualisation of ‘darkness’ that signifies ‘African’ as inferior to the West, Europe and North America, and therefore subject to derogation. By demonstrating the violent and damaging nature of these representations, as they remain in twenty-first century travel literature, this dissertation hopes to initiate a dialogue around the genre’s preservation of preconceptions and prejudices that continue to plague Africa and its people. This is possible through literary critique that exposes dated colonial racism and prejudice that appears in the travel literature of the post-independent age in which we now find ourselves.

- Description: This research study sought to provide a primary base from which key strategies can be developed to address the gangsterism, drug and violence challenges in Gelvandale, in an effort to bring about peace and stability in this community and the surrounding areas. It also examined at the relevance of conflict management in response to gangsterism and the daily struggles of NGOs and the community. Gangsterism and violence in the Northern Areas have evolved in the last decade to an extent where the police sometimes fear to go and investigate. This problem stems from decades of socio-economic difficulties and a struggle for a better life in the Coloured community. The Group Areas Act of the 1960s still affects people of colour and marginalises them greatly. It is important that Gelvandale and the surrounding areas be recognised as the heart of the gang problem in the EC and that it demands the urgent attention of policy makers, law enforcement and civil society. Many organisations like ES are doing their best to bring about peace in the Northern Areas but it is difficult without the full support and cooperation of the community and especially the police. It is recommended that NMU work together with NGOs and NPOs to give them guidance and training sessions on negotiations, mediations and facilitation. The Northern Areas has a protracted political and social history which deserves more attention, acknowledgement and direction from authorities, policy makers and researchers.

- Description: The objective of this research is to investigate the problems of competence and equivalence in the translation of Sesotho Home Language (SHL) workbooks for the Intermediate Phase in the South African Department of Basic Education (SADBE). Their main objective is to develop leaners’ language skills. These workbooks were originally in English Home Language and were translated into SHL. However, the flouting of Sesotho language grammatical rules, errors and mistakes in these SHL workbooks are failing to fulfil the main objective of “language skills development”. This study uses the qualitative research method and has done a random collection of data from Terms 1 and 2, all referred to as Book 1. The random collection is meant to enhance the reliability and validity of the data that is further enhanced by an analysis of similar data collected from each Book 1 of Grades 4 to 6. Some of the findings include language errors and mistakes that include the use of a foreign language, non-equivalence between the source language and the target language, failure to understand the context in which lexical items are used and evidence of linguistic incompetence in Sesotho. Suggestions are made on how to improve this situation in order to fulfill the objectives that are envisaged by the SADBE. - Description: High-tech architecture is moving towards a paradigm shift with the development and incorporation of digital fabrication technology. This interest is extended into the discussion of recycling existing infrastructure. In this treatise, a topic which ties into both the heritage and ecological discourse. It recognises the significance of historical urban elements and the finite quality of heritage resources within the city. A historical building used as a host for the design of a 3D printing facility invites a dialogue between the architecture of the old and the expression of the new. The Premier Mill Building is identified as an historical urban artefact and the proposed programme complements the historical background of the building, which was a granary. A building from another time, now caught in a post-industrial age. The primary architectural exploration focuses on the possibilities offered by 3D printing in the making and expression of architecture. Therefore research is focused on the types and processes of 3D printing and there products. Secondly, the treatise employs an urban artefact as a vehicle of expression for a new programme, which requires an understanding of the topic of marrying present and past architecture. In the treatise the city, is understood through the work of Aldo Rossi’s conceptual perspective of the city. Further, the topic of digital tectonic is explored in order to establish an expression of digital fabrication. Heritage and conservation principles are investigated to complete a theoretical understanding of the project. This treatise document is a record of the design process from start to finish. The document unpacks the treatise through its various stages of growth: project background; research; design strategies and final design.

- Description: In this dissertation, the Biblical allusions in Petra Müller’s poetry will be analysed. Biblical figures as well as specific scenes from the Bible often form the basis of her poems. At first, her poetry will be contextualised within the tradition of Afrikaans religious poetry and subsequently the theory of transtextuality or textual transcendence coined by Genette (1992) will be discussed – particularly those concepts that will be relevant to the analysis of the relationship between Müller’s poetry and the original Biblical text or textual fragment. How does Petra Müller utilise the Bible as a source and inspiration for her poetry? How does she engage with the original Biblical text alluded to in her work?
