In forest vegetation the fracking fluid caused ground vegetation to be extensively damaged with high mortality rates and trees showing premature leaf loss following application. A study by Martin (2017) investigated these effects on Karoo vegetation in a greenhouse and found it to increase stress and reduced the growth with some life forms being identified as sensitive. The current study followed on the work of Martin testing additional species in the same greenhouse and applying different treatments of fracking fluid to Karoo vegetation in their habitat. The plants were monitored by measuring their height, photosynthetic efficiency (stress), biomass allocation and the temperature of the sites. The greenhouse plants had increased growth associated with repeated fracking fluid treatments while having variable stress levels with different treatments of the fracking fluid. The farm had mixed results being generally more stressed due to the treatments, the repeated fracking fluid treatments showed greater growth. The farm vegetation was more sensitive due to prolonged drought which is suspected to play a large role in the different response to fracking fluid between the two sites. The several hypotheses based on the finding of Martin (2017) were not supported by the data in this study. However, the application of fracking fluid did affect the tree species as they were found to be sensitive, while the other plant species was generally stressed after the applications. The greenhouse study cannot accurately represent the effects of fracking fluid on the farm vegetation, due to the large difference in the environment thus, more field studies would need to be conducted to determine the effects of fracking fluid.

Testing the application of coastal altimetry in two South-Eastern African bights: the relationship between mesoscale features and chlorophyll-a, cyclonic eddies in the Indian Ocean

I address a two part problem. Firstly, how well does the application of coastal altimetry techniques behave in the coastal region? Secondly, is there a relationship between the eddies’ presence and chlorophyll-a (chl-a). Sea level anomalies (SLA) were computed from the re-tracked ALES data of two satellite missions — Envisat (used for Delagoa Bight eddy) and Jason -2 (for the Durban eddy) with geophysical corrections removed. These datasets were compared with the original satellite, 1 Hz RADS, AND AVISO gridded data. Two regions were selected to see if there was a biophysical link. A centre region of the eddy and an outside region of the eddy were taken. Results indicate that coastal altimetrywas successful in delimiting both features. ALES was less noisey and able to recover more data that were missed by the 1 Hz RADS dataset. Hovmöller plots showed the Delagoa Bight eddy to be more of a transient feature than semi-permanent, as had previously been suggested. Results from the linear model indicate a negative correlation between SLA and chl-a. This influence could be through facilitation of chl-a in the bight or just retaining chla. This is hard to elucidate without in situ data. These results show a promising indication that coastal altimetry will be a useful and reliable product to further biophysical coupling research along the coast.

Zooplankton communities associated with seamounts may be influenced by various mechanisms related to increased retention,such as Taylor columns and/or enhanced local productivity, leading to increased predation pressure. Through this study we investigated mesozooplankton distribution and community structure in the vicinity of three shallow seamounts in the South West Indian Ocean (SWIO) during September 2016, December 2016 and April/May 2017 at La Pérouse, MadRidge and Walters Shoal respectively. The water-column was profiled at 42 stations using a CTD-F equipped with a L-ADCP and mesozooplankton was sampled with a Bongo net or a Hydrobios Midi MultiNet, both fitted with 200 µm mesh. Walters Shoal had significantly lower mesozooplankton total abundance and biovolume compared to La Perouse and MadRidge. La Perouse and MadRidge showed similar mesozooplankton community structures with steep Normalised Biovolume Size Spectrum (NBSS) slopes, indicating higher productivity and dominance of small organisms, compared to Walters Shoal where the slopes were flatter. Total and per taxon abundances and biovolumes at locations “On” and “Off” the seamount were similar, as was the size diversity for MadRidge and Walter Shoal. None of the environmental parameters tested had a significant effect on variability of the mesozooplankton community structure at the stations overall.

Environmental management of wetlands on an urban periphery: the case of Bay West

- Description: South Africa is a semi-arid country and thus depends on sound management of its water resources. Wetlands, despite their importance to water resource storage and water quality, among their other ecological and social significance, remain the most threatened of South Africa’s ecosystems. One of their greatest threats is encroachment by urbanisation. This occurs because wetlands, and especially ephemeral urban periphery wetlands, are overlooked. This study’s main objective was to determine the water quality and health of the wetlands adjacent to the newly established Bay West development on the western urban periphery of Nelson Mandela Bay. Wetlands are difficult to access and it is time-consuming to assess them. Remote sensing, however, overcomes this challenge and is cost-effective and time-considerate. It was the aim of this study to assess the health of the peri-urban wetlands on the Bay West periphery in order to formulate an appropriate environmental management plan, and remote sensing was tested as an effective method for wetland health management. It was found that the wetlands closer to the urban residential area (Sherwood suburb) were far more impacted than the wetlands nearer to Bay West Mall. Wetlands Six to Eight were higher in all parameters of pH, total dissolved solutes (TDS), salinity, conductivity and chlorophyll a concentration than Wetlands One to Five located further away from the urban area. A correlation with distance away from the urban area found a strong inverse relationship with between distance and the water quality factor, yielding a correlation coefficient of (<-0.7) in 2017 and (<-0.9) in 2018 with regard to TDS, salinity and conductivity. This, therefore, suggests that the wetlands’ health deteriorates towards the urban area. TDS, salinity, pH and conductivity correlate highly with chlorophyll a concentration at (>0.70). There was significant difference in pH in the year 2017 between the Bay West wetlands and the reference wetland (p<0.05; df=19; f= 3.56; n=3) and in 2018 (p<0.01; df=22; f= 8.90; n=3). No significant difference was found between the wetlands for dissolved oxygen. TDS between the wetlands was found to be significantly different in the year 2017 (p<0.01; df=23; f= 44.16; n=3) and 2018 (p<0.05; df=22; f=2.62; n=3), where conductivity and salinity returned the same p value for 2017 and 2018 as TDS respectively. There was a significant difference in chlorophyll a between the Bay West wetlands in 2017 (p<0.05; df=20; f=3.29; n=3) and Wetland Seven measured eutrophic at 22.45 mg/L-1. Remote sensing red band values and the field sample absorption values were highly correlated at R2= 0.5. Chlorophyll a content of wetland water correlated with NDVI data at R2= 0.6. Thus, remote sensing proved to be a successful estimator for wetlands health analysis and a proxy for wetland management. These results yielded an environmental management plan where monitoring water quality via chlorophyll a indicated health levels of the wetlands via trophic state.

Vanadium-based catalysts for oxidation of organosulfur compounds: synthesis, catalysis and mechanistic studies

- Description: A series of oxidovanadium(IV) complexes based on the ligand, 2-(2’-hydroxyphenyl)imidazole, with substituent groups of different electronegativities on the phenolic para position, were successfully synthesized, characterized and investigated for their catalytic activities in the oxidation of dibenzothiophene (DBT), a typical refractory sulfur compound found in fuel. It was observed from catalytic oxidation studies that the presence of an electron withdrawing group on the phenolic para position of the ligand results in higher catalytic activity. SC-XRD data and DFT studies were used to explain the trends in activity observed. The highest activity was observed with 6.5 nmol of the nitro derivative catalyst [VO(PIMNO2)2] when 100% of 100 mg (0.543 mmol) of DBT was converted to its sulfone derivative dibenzothiophene sulfoxide (DBTO2) using 2.0 mL (1.05 mmol) of t-BuOOH. Potential to immobilize the complex catalysts was demonstrated through the synthesis of oxidovanadium(IV) copolymer nanofibers. The oxidovanadium nanofibers were successfully employed in the oxidation of sulfur compounds in a real fuel sample (diesel 500) which were then removed through solvent extraction using acetonitrile to give clean fuel. SC-XRD, EPR and UV-Vis spectroscopy were instrumental in providing insight into the mechanism of the catalyzed reaction. Vanadium oxides were also investigated as a cheaper alternative for the catalytic oxidation reaction. Phases of different vanadium oxides were synthesized by calcining NH4VO3 in air at different temperatures with an intention to investigate them for their catalytic activities. The catalyst obtained from calcination at 600⁰C was predominantly the orthorhombic phase of V2O5. Potential to immobilize the vanadium oxides was demonstrated using a silica support where NH4VO3 was impregnated onto silica and calcined in air at 600⁰C. This deep result, which describes the structure of Sp(f(λ)) for all λ ∈ D, relies heavily on subharmonic techniques, which are also included in the dissertation. Let A and B be Banach algebras. The author’s honours project [24] served as an exposition of the GleasonKahane-Żelazko Theorem [7, Theorem 4], which provides an answer to Kaplansky’s problem in the case where B = C. In this dissertation we look at other special cases of Kaplansky’s problem, such as the case where A and B are von Neumann algberas, as solved by Aupetit [4, Theorem 1.3] and remark that his result holds for the more general case where A is any C ∗ -algebra that has the property that every self-adjoint element is the limit of a sequence of linear combinations of orthogonal idempotents in A, and B is a semi-simple Banach algebra. This result relies heavily on complex function theory, spectral theory and holomorphic functional calculus. We also provide detailed expositions of the work of Taylor [27] in which an operator calculus on undounded, closed linear operators is developed, and the work of Allan [1] in which a holomorphic functional calculus is defined for locally convex algebras.

In this dissertation we look at other special cases of Kaplansky’s problem, such as the case where A and B are von Neumann algberas, as solved by Aupetit [4, Theorem 1.3] and remark that his result holds for the more general case where A is any C ∗ -algebra that has the property that every self-adjoint element is the limit of a sequence of linear combinations of orthogonal idempotents in A, and B is a semi-simple Banach algebra. This result relies heavily on complex function theory, spectral theory and holomorphic functional calculus. We also provide detailed expositions of the work of Taylor [27] in which an operator calculus on undounded, closed linear operators is developed, and the work of Allan [1] in which a holomorphic functional calculus is defined for locally convex algebras.

It is therefore necessary for forest companies to seek active means of engaging and partnering with these communities through a participatory forest management (PFM) approach. This study explored the sustainable (social, environmental and economic), benefits of such an approach as perceived (experienced) by these local rural communities, and specifically land claimants. The study was conducted in communities adjacent to SAFCOL plantations in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. Data were collected between May and June 2017 by means of a structured questionnaire. Surveys were conducted on 46 households within the identified communities so as to verify and evaluate perceived benefits in terms of forest products, ecosystem services and amenities/services/infrastructure provided by SAFCOL and the broader forest industry. The results indicated that these communities recognize and obtain numerous social, environmental and economic benefits from the forest including Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) such as firewood; forest provisioning ecosystem services (FPESs) such as improved water quality; and more metaphysical benefits such as access to gravesites and the protection of traditions and customs. These benefits have the ability to improve the social well-being, economic independence, and the quality of environmental services obtained by the associated communities. It was however found that the utilization of these benefits was widely differentiated according to gender and land claimant status. Whilst males and females largely benefitted equally, there was a distinct benefit preference between genders for different NTFPs. For example males showed preference for the collection of building material, bush meat and for livestock husbandry, whilst females showed preference for the collection of firewood, medicinal plants and fruit, amongst others. Similarly, it was found that overall, non-land claimants benefited more than land claimants. Reasons for this are primarily due to the increased distance with which the land claimants live from the forest resource when compared to non-land claimants. The empirical value of the data produced through this study will be invaluable in negotiations with the land claimant communities on land settlement agreements, joint venture proposals, including Participatory Forest Management, and future land tenure. Through such inclusivity and vested interest in the sustainable management of the forests, corporate risk is reduced and community/land claimant relationships are reinforced. Such Participatory Forest Management arrangements are key to ensuring the longevity and resilience to the forest sector post-transfer of claimed land.

In contrast to their ancient counterparts, many modern marine stromatolites have a coarser internal structure and host a diverse eukaryotic community. Different mesofabric structures are found within stromatolite formations which may provide microhabitat opportunities for organisms. Therefore, the first aim of this study was to investigate how the microalgal (including Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta and cyanobacteria) community contributes towards the differences observed amongst mesofabric structures in terms of depth profiles and layering at representative stromatolites forming along the Port Elizabeth coastline in South Africa. The second aim was to investigate how the invertebrate community changes between mesofabric types. This was achieved by comparing the proportional abundances of each of the major microalgal classes between the different mesofabric types and depth profiles. Additionally, the invertebrates found within samples collected were identified and counted. These were related to site and environmental characteristics using multivariate modelling. Clear variability in terms of proportional abundance was apparent between microhabitats and with depth. Coarser, more-bioturbated types had a higher bacillariophyte biomass than smoother types. Invertebrate abundance was generally higher in coarser mats. However, one of the finer, well-laminated types had surprisingly more invertebrates than expected, but only in summer. The changes in microalgal and invertebrate community distribution varied seasonally. More microalgae were found in summer and more invertebrates were found in winter. Microalgae distribution was driven by mesofabric features whereas invertebrate distribution was attributed to resource changes. The implications of this study are in terms of the role of microalgae as ecosystem engineers in driving microhabitat differences. The microhabitats provide opportunities for colonisation by invertebrates.

As a result, this technique has diversified and expanded to provide novel, and practical solutions to not only organic synthesis but also renewable fuels and material science. The focus of this research work was to exploit continuous flow systems, to develop a continuous flow process that is energy and time effective, using commercial micro reactors to synthesize 5-formyl-2,4-dimethyl-1H-pyrrole-3-carboxylic acid, a key intermediate towards the synthesis of sunitinib, an anti-cancer drug. In this thesis, a successful study on the individual translation of a 5 step batch synthesis of 5- formyl-2,4-dimethyl-1H-pyrrole-3-carboxylic acid into optimised continuous flow syntheses is demonstrated. A comprehensive literature review and background on cancer, and an introduction to pyrrole rings, their role in disease treatments in addition to a brief introduction to continuous flow technology with its advantages, and comparison to classical batch methods are provided in the first chapter. Chapter two is detailing the experimental procedures utilised for both batch and continuous flow syntheses. The continuous flow synthesis of the four intermediates towards the target compound in this work proved to be far superior compared to their batch syntheses; excellent improvements in reaction yields and selectivity in addition to tremendously shorter reaction times were observed. This is expounded in chapter three with detailed discussions of the results attained during the continuous flow optimisation of each step within the scope of this research, are provided. The concluding remarks, the impact of this study and future work are elucidated in chapter four.

It has furthermore been observed that there is a major difference between project management competencies and merely having a qualification in the same field as the project’s core business. The role of Construction Project Managers is especially unique within public sector projects as these projects often involve multiple stakeholders whose opinions can strongly influence the project(Jalocha et al., 2014). This has been the case within the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality where labour and community unrest often result in project stoppages and delays which ultimately lead to project failure. Stakeholder engagement, an inherently social competence, is a key component of Project Management Competence and falls outside the curriculum of most technical qualifications in the built environment. Project Management failure within the public sector has become rife and the research findings of this study should be helpful in assisting the local government in attaining higher project success rates. A qualitative research approach was adopted for this study making use of a descriptive research design, yielding qualitative data which was summarised by the researcher through statistical analyses. The data were obtained through questionnaires distributed to the various Clients, Consultants and Contractors within the NMBM via email. The questionnaires were furthermore only distributed to government parastatals within the construction industry in the NMBM, Consultants and Contractors who have completed or are working on projects for these parastatals within the public sector. Key findings from the research note a positive relationship between competency and project success; that there is not enough mentorship received by Construction Project Managers in the built environment sectors; that there is a positive relationship between mentorship received and project success and that there is a significant difference in the number of professionally registered personnel in the Consulting Sector compared to that of the Public-Sector. It furthermore indicated that there was a positive correlation between supervisors being professionally registered and their junior Construction Project Managers achieving project success from the research findings, recommendations were made to aid the increase in project success rates and decrease project management failure within the NMBM. For this to be achieved, the following areas need to be addressed: Assigning of projects to Construction Project Managers, Mentorship provided to Construction Project Managers and ultimately their Project Management Competence.

Alternative pine species/hybrids for the Cape timber growing regions of South Africa

- Description: Pinus radiata has been the preferred commercial sawtimber species for the Cape forestry region for many years. Since the introduction of Fusarium circinatum, and the susceptibility of P. radiata to this disease, the sustainable production of this pine species for the Cape has been negatively impacted due to poor survival in the nursery and in field plantings. For this reason, a number of additional pine species and hybrids have been established in the Cape region of South Africa since 2006 to identify taxa that would perform as well as or better than P. radiata. Three research trials were implemented on contrasting sites that contained eight common species/hybrids treatments that included P. elliottii, P. elliottii x P. caribaea, P. radiata, P. patula x P. greggii var. australis, P. patula x P. oocarpa, P. patula x P. tecunumanii (HE), P. patula x P. tecunumanii (LE) and P. tecunumanii (HE) x P. oocarpa were established at Witelsbos, Kruisfontein and Garcia across diverse soil types, drainage and climate conditions in the Cape. Survival, growth data and tree morphology (forking, foxtails, broken tops and stem form) were assessed at five years of age and individual tree volume was calculated. Five year results indicate that on the waterlogged site at Witelsbos P. elliottii and its hybrid with P. caribaea was best in terms of productivity, at the dry site of Garcia, P. taeda and P. elliottii demonstrated promise, and at Kruisfontein, the most fertile site, P. elliottii x P. caribaea, P. patula x P. tecunumanii (LE) and P. maximinoi were found to be promising alternatives to P. radiata. Wood properties were assessed at Kruisfontein at six-years of age. Basic density and Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) were found to be significantly different for the various species/hybrids. Pinus patula x P. tecunumanii (LE), P. patula x P. greggii (S), P. maximinoi and P. patula x P. tecunumanii (HE) were all significantly better than P. radiata, which would suggest that these taxa would have similar or superior wood strength over P. radiata, the preferred sawtimber species for the Cape region. Only P. tecunumanii (HE) x P. oocarpa had a higher basic density than P. radiata, but not significantly different. Species that had similar basic density were P. patula x P. greggii (S), P. taeda and P. tecunumanii (LE) x P. caribaea. Although P. elliottii x P. caribaea had the highest volume at Witelsbos and Kruisfontein, the timber qualities were the worst, suggesting that some breeding is needed to improve this hybrid to be an acceptable sawtimber species. From this study, several potential alternative species/hybrids have been identified that are tolerant to the F. circinatum pathogen and have acceptable growth and wood properties, compared to P. radiata.

- Description: Pinus radiata has been the preferred commercial sawtimber species for the Cape forestry region for many years. Since the introduction of Fusarium circinatum, and the susceptibility of P. radiata to this disease, the sustainable production of this pine species for the Cape has been negatively impacted due to poor survival in the nursery and in field plantings. For this reason, a number of additional pine species and hybrids have been established in the Cape region of South Africa since 2006 to identify taxa that would perform as well as or better than P. radiata. Three research trials were implemented on contrasting sites that contained eight common species/hybrids treatments that included P. elliottii, P. elliottii x P. caribaea, P. radiata, P. patula x P. greggii var. australis, P. patula x P. oocarpa, P. patula x P. tecunumanii (HE), P. patula x P. tecunumanii (LE) and P. tecunumanii (HE) x P. oocarpa were established at Witelsbos, Kruisfontein and Garcia across diverse soil types, drainage and climate conditions in the Cape. Survival, growth data and tree morphology (forking, foxtails, broken tops and stem form) were assessed at five years of age and individual tree volume was calculated. Five year results indicate that on the waterlogged site at Witelsbos P. elliottii and its hybrid with P. caribaea was best in terms of productivity, at the dry site of Garcia, P. taeda and P. elliottii demonstrated promise, and at Kruisfontein, the most fertile site, P. elliottii x P. caribaea, P. patula x P. tecunumanii (LE) and P. maximinoi were found to be promising alternatives to P. radiata. These results suggest that female Cape Sugarbirds will be more prone to energy and water stress during hot and dry summers in the Fynbos region because of resource dominance by male Cape Sugarbirds. Endemic birds, such as the Cape Sugarbird, warrant a conservation priority, especially since they are the dominant pollinator of the Protea plants in the Fynbos biome. The findings of this study will provide insights into population persistence of Cape Sugarbirds in response to predicted heat waves and rise in global temperatures.

Exacerbation of pre-existing ER stress can trigger cancer cell death, with a minimal effect on normal cells. Currently, no high-throughput method exists to detect and quantify ER stress in cell lines. This study showed that Thioflavin T, a fluorescent dye that binds to misfolded protein aggregates, can be used for the high-throughput detection of ER stress, and provides several advantages over currently used methods. Current literature suggests that cannabinoid treatment may induce cancer cell death via ER stress, however little is known about the mechanism of induction. This study proposed a mechanism that occurs via the influx of Ca2+ via the vanilloid receptor 1 (TRPV1), and subsequent ROS production, which affects protein folding. ER stress was induced using various cannabinoids and measured using Thioflavin T and western blot analysis. The effect of cannabinoid treatment on ROS production and the intracellular Ca2+ concentration was measured. Cannabidiol (CBD) was the most potent ER stress inducer, significantly increasing Ca2+ and ROS accumulation; however, the level of accumulated Ca2+ across cell lines varied, which may be due to the differences in the TRPV1 expression and localization. Concomitant treatment of CBD with an antioxidant significantly increased cell viability and decreased ER stress induction in the MCF7 cell line. Concomitant treatment with a TRPV1 antagonist increased viability in this cell line. In conclusion, the results suggested that CBD may induce ER stress via Ca2+ influx through the TRPV1 receptor, thereby elevating intracellular ROS levels and disrupting protein folding.

South Africa has been witnessing to a surge in wind energy developments in recent years. Although, environmental impacts often enjoy more emphasis, social impacts are equally important. Recently social sustainability was seen as an integral part of sustainable development for the future and can no longer be ignored. Wind energy is pathway towards sustainable development but can have detrimental impacts on social sustainability. On the one hand wind energy is said to impact culture, sense of places and cause unrest in a community, however, on the other hand it is said to be socially sustainable to the point where wind energy is incorporated into local culture and not to mention the employment opportunities it can create. This is particularly important for vulnerable communities found in the Karoo, where unemployment is very high. Purpose/ Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the social sustainability of a wind energy project in the Karoo by constructing a theoretical assessment model designed to produce appropriate and specific social indicators. Methodology: A literature review was undertaken to gain insights into the social sustainability of wind energy which also served as the theoretical backbone for the model and assessment parameters. The assessment model produced 10 indicators which was used as interview schedule with key stakeholders in the study area. A total of 31 qualitative interviews were conducted and produced a good data set. Findings: The results from this study show that here was no significant negative impact reported with regards to social sustainability. The wind developer is committed to the community based on the various social initiative funded by it. Although a definite positive impact and improvement in terms of social sustainability is evident in the area, there is still a long way to go as many outcomes set by the wind developer is yet to achieved.

Designed to improve service delivery through financing the cost of eradicating basic services backlogs created by Apartheid’s legacy of ‘separate development’, MIG is also intended to be part of government’s overall strategy to eliminate the ‘triple challenge’ of poverty, unemployment and growing inequality. Through government’s active policy which sought to transform and enhance the municipal infrastructure service delivery capacity, effective project management was identified as an integral function of municipalities with a developmental role in terms of the Constitutional mandate. This led to the establishment of Project Management Units (PMUs) tasked with administering the MIG funds and managing the infrastructure projects effectively. Whilst MIG’s overall key principles were clearly defined in the MIG policy framework, the attainment of project success has proved elusive for most municipalities and this manifestation has only been partially examined. The purpose of this study is to explore factors affecting project success with the establishment of PMUs in Sarah Baartman District Municipality (SBDM) in the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa, with the aim of contributing to the refinement of best-practice for project implementation. A multiple case study approach was preferred, preceded by an extensive review of relevant literature on the basic tenets of project success. This exercise culminated in the refinement of research questions which were then posed in interviews to a purposive sample of PMU managers within SBDM. The findings from the study revealed the centrality of the dominant features required to influence the probability of positive outcomes such as institutional capacity, organisational culture and infrastructure governance. The research concludes by proposing ways of improving on these three components in the delivery of municipal infrastructure.

The studies were performed using various physico-chemical techniques including melting point, IR and NMR spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, elemental analyses, conductivity measurements, X-ray crystallography and cyclic voltammetry. The reaction of [Ln(NO3)3·xH2O] (Ln = Nd, Gd, Yb; x = 6 for Nd and Gd, x = 5 for Yb) with the flexible salen-type Schiff base ligand 1,3-bis(o-hydroxybenzylideneamino)propane (H2L1) produced three polynuclear complexes with the general formulae {[Nd(µH2L1)4(NO3)3]·2H2O}n and [Ln(µ-H2L1)2(NO3)6(H2L1)] (Ln = Gd and Yb). Single-crystal Xray crystallography revealed a ten-coordinate polymeric Nd(III) complex that crystallised in the monoclinic space group P21/c, and isostructural nine-coordinate binuclear Gd(III) and Yb(III) complexes (triclinic system, space group P-1). The lanthanide contraction effect is clear across the series. The flexible nature of HL2 results in the self-assembly of the Nd(III) complex in a 1D polymer chain by acting as the bridge between the metal ions. The Nd-Ophenolate bond distances are 2.403(18), 2.463(17), 2.379(17) and 2.367(19) Å and the average Nd-Onitrate bond length is 2.671 Å. Furthermore, the electronic absorption spectra displays 4f→4f transitions solely for the neodymium(III) compound. The syntheses and characterisation of the lanthanide complexes, [La(HL2)3(NO3)3], [Dy(HL2)2(NO3)3] and [Dy(HL2)2Cl3(H2O)]·2CH2Cl2 with the o-vanillin-derived Schiff base ligand 2-methoxy-6-[(E)-(phenylimino)methyl]phenol (HL2) are reported. The nitro-stabilised La(III) and Dy(III) compounds are ten-coordinate with metabidiminished icosahedron and sphenocorona geometries, respectively. Substitution of the nitrate with chloride ions in the starting metal compounds yielded an eight-coordinate Dy(III) complex that adopts the biaugmented trigonal prism geometry. For all three complexes, HL2 exists as a zwitterion that is bound to the metal centre in a mono- and bidentate fashion via the phenolate and methoxy oxygen atoms. The dysprosium(III) chloride complex is stabilised by both intramolecular N−H···O and intermolecular O−H···C1 hydrogen bonds, while the crystal packing of the Ln(III) nitrate complexes is ensured by mainly intramolecular N−H···O hydrogen bonds. Fluorescence studies displayed characteristic Dy(III) f→f transitions (4F9/2 → 6H15/2), which suggest the ligand HL2 is an effective organic antenna to absorb and transfer energy to the dysprosium ion. A series of mononuclear Nd(III) complexes with the Schiff base derivatives 2-methoxy-6-[(E)(phenylimino)methyl]phenol (HL2), 5-methoxy-2-[(E)-(phenylimino)methyl]phenol (HL3) and 2-methoxy-6-{(E)-[(2-methoxyphenyl)imino]methyl}phenol (HL4) yielded structurally diverse complexes defined by the formulae [Nd(HL2)2(NO3)3], [Nd(HL3)3(NO3)3] and [Nd(HL4)2(NO3)3]·CH3OH. Crystallographic analysis shows HL2 and HL4 coordinate bidentately via the phenolate and methoxy oxygen atoms, while HL3 is bound monodentately through the phenolate oxygen atom. Continuous shape measures depict that the decacoordinate complexes with HL2 and HL4 conform to the sphenocorona and tetradecahedron geometries, respectively, whilst the nona-coordinate Nd(III) complex with HL3 exhibits the muffin geometry. The effect of the ligand substituents and their positions (meta versus para) on the absorption and emission intensities of the complexes is demonstrated. Additionally, the electrochemical behaviour of the o-vanillin-derived Schiff base ligands and their complexes was also investigated, and the results illustrate ligand-based reductions and metal-centred redox potentials that are significantly shifted by the ligand substituents.

Furthermore, the electronic absorption spectra displays 4f→4f transitions solely for the neodymium(III) compound. The syntheses and characterisation of the lanthanide complexes, [La(HL2)3(NO3)3], [Dy(HL2)2(NO3)3] and [Dy(HL2)2Cl3(H2O)]·2CH2Cl2 with the o-vanillin-derived Schiff base ligand 2-methoxy-6-[(E)-(phenylimino)methyl]phenol (HL2) are reported. The nitro-stabilised La(III) and Dy(III) compounds are ten-coordinate with metabidiminished icosahedron and sphenocorona geometries, respectively. Substitution of the nitrate with chloride ions in the starting metal compounds yielded an eight-coordinate Dy(III) complex that adopts the biaugmented trigonal prism geometry. For all three complexes, HL2 exists as a zwitterion that is bound to the metal centre in a mono- and bidentate fashion via the phenolate and methoxy oxygen atoms. The dysprosium(III) chloride complex is stabilised by both intramolecular N−H···O and intermolecular O−H···C1 hydrogen bonds, while the crystal packing of the Ln(III) nitrate complexes is ensured by mainly intramolecular N−H···O hydrogen bonds. Fluorescence studies displayed characteristic Dy(III) f→f transitions (4F9/2 → 6H15/2), which suggest the ligand HL2 is an effective organic antenna to absorb and transfer energy to the dysprosium ion. A series of mononuclear Nd(III) complexes with the Schiff base derivatives 2-methoxy-6-[(E)(phenylimino)methyl]phenol (HL2), 5-methoxy-2-[(E)-(phenylimino)methyl]phenol (HL3) and 2-methoxy-6-{(E)-[(2-methoxyphenyl)imino]methyl}phenol (HL4) yielded structurally diverse complexes defined by the formulae [Nd(HL2)2(NO3)3], [Nd(HL3)3(NO3)3] and [Nd(HL4)2(NO3)3]·CH3OH. Crystallographic analysis shows HL2 and HL4 coordinate bidentately via the phenolate and methoxy oxygen atoms, while HL3 is bound monodentately through the phenolate oxygen atom. Continuous shape measures depict that the decacoordinate complexes with HL2 and HL4 conform to the sphenocorona and tetradecahedron geometries, respectively, whilst the nona-coordinate Nd(III) complex with HL3 exhibits the muffin geometry. The effect of the ligand substituents and their positions (meta versus para) on the absorption and emission intensities of the complexes is demonstrated. Additionally, the electrochemical behaviour of the o-vanillin-derived Schiff base ligands and their complexes was also investigated, and the results illustrate ligand-based reductions and metal-centred redox potentials that are significantly shifted by the ligand substituents.

- Description: The study sought to investigate a development performance and management of Mdantsane CBD. The performance measurement framework may enhance the chances of economic success in the CBD. The study was conducted by means of a review of related literature and by conducting an empirical study. The empirical study was conducted using a quantitative approach by distributing research questionnaires to members falling within the sample population. The primary objective of the study was to develop a framework for perceived enhanced development for the Mdantsane CBD. A descriptive survey was conducted among the population within Mdantsane Township. The framework includes strategic factors of planning during apartheid era, reviewed strategic planning during democratic era and it provides an understanding of the current spatial and physical characteristics of the study area. Key issues such as spatial planning, infrastructure, environment, health, safety, economics and management of the CBD were also identified. Findings were based on the survey’s results from the community members. Findings suggest that the following variables: strategic factors (democratic); spatial development framework and infrastructure implementation; budget alignment; PESTEL factors (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Ecological and Legal); environmental health and safety, transport and transport engineering, project management (body of knowledge) and the National Development Plan positively influenced the perceived enhanced development of Mdantsane CBD. All these variables were identified in the empirical framework affecting the perceived enhanced development of Mdantsane CBD. This study may contribute to the South African spatial and development planning body of knowledge by addressing factors which are faced by planners in development of the settlements.

- Description: Tulbaghia violacea is an indigenous plant commonly known as wild garlic, wilde knoffel in Afrikaans, isihaqa in Zulu or itswele lomlambo in Xhosa. Its leaves and bulbs are widely used as herbal remedies for various ailments and its medicinal uses include fever and colds, asthma, tuberculosis and stomach problems. Like all other members of the Alliacea family, Tulbaghia violacea produces a distinctive garlic-like odour when its leaves or rhizomes are damaged, resulting in the release of cysteine-derived sulphur compounds which include the oil-soluble organo-sulphur compounds and water-soluble cysteine derivatives. Chemically synthesized sulphur containing compounds have been reported to be effective devulcanizing agents and many industries prefer to perform devulcanization using them. Most commonly applied devulcanizing agents include disulphides, thiophenols and their zinc salts, and mercaptans which are mixed with the rubber scrap powder under specific reaction conditions. In this study, instead of performing devulcanization by using industrial synthesized sulphur containing compounds, the effectiveness of the extracts of organo-sulphur containing compounds from Tulbaghia violacea are evaluated as potential devulcanizing agents for synthetic cis-1,4-polyisoprene vulcanizates. This is a new, cheap and greener practice of rubber devulcanization. Diallyl disulphide, which is one of the organo-sulphur containing compounds present in Tulbaghia violacea, is the devulcanizing agent of interest to this study. The organo-sulphur containing compounds were extracted from the bulbs, roots and leaves of the plant using the soxhlet and ultrasonic bath extraction method. The solvent system used in the soxhlet extraction method was 2% of 2-propanol in n-hexane whereas in ultrasonic bath extraction method the solvent system used was 100% ethanol. An essential oil extract was obtained from the plant organs. The yield of the essential oil extracts obtained using the soxhlet extraction method was higher compared to the yield of the essential oil extracts obtained using the ultrasonic bath extraction method. According to the Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy, the organo-sulphur containing compounds were present in the essential oil extracts of the plant. The essential oil extracts that were extracted using the soxhlet extraction method were chosen for further analysis. It was found out that the allyl sulphide and diallyl disulphide have the same retention time from the High Performance Liquid Chromatography (using a normal phase column). The Differential Scanning Calorimeter indicated that the allyl sulphide was not present in the essential oil extracts whereas the diallyl disulphide was present in the essential oil extract of the roots and leaves. The High Performance Liquid Chromatography was used to quantify the presence of the diallyl disulphide in the essential oil extract of roots and leaves. The quantity of diallyl disulphide was 23% in the dry mass of the essential oil extract of roots. In the essential oil extract of leaves the diallyl disulphide was very low concentrated and the High Performance Liquid Chromatography was less sensitive to detect it. According to the Thermogravimetric Analyser, it was found that the essential oil extracts begin to degrade at 120 °C and experience a multistage degradation. The softening temperature of the essential oil extracts was 60 °C from the Simultaneous Differential Scanning Calorimeter-Thermogravimetric Analyser. Conventional vulcanization of synthetic cis-1,4-polyisoprene was prepared with the vulcanization ingredients of zinc oxide, sulphur, stearic acid and N-tert-butyl-2-benzothiazole sulphenamide. The vulcanized synthetic cis-1,4-polyisoprene produced, under the heating temperature of 160 °C, was mixed with the essential oil extracts using the internal mixer at 60 °C and the two-roll mill. The overall torque, tan delta and the total crosslink density were the properties of interest of synthetic cis-1,4-polyisoprene vulcanizate in this study. The devulcanization temperature for the treated synthetic cis-1,4-polyisoprene vulcanizate with the essential oil extracts was optimized using the Dynamic Moving Die Rheometer and Dynamic Rubber Process Analyser. The amount of essential oil extracts at which they are effective devulcanizing agents for synthetic cis-1,4-polyisoprene vulcanizate was also optimized.
