  • Description: This style of dancing is most popular in the Dowa district, where most large villages, they say, have their own groups of enthusiasts. "Come and see the glory of these boys". Not the European accent on the ultimate syllable. "muone kuwala", instead of the normal "mu'one kuw'ala". This may well spring from the fact that the Malipenga dance and its dance songs originated with military drilling as performed by the Kings African Rifles and the Nyasaland police.   • Description: There was once a bird called Ntowi-towi, who went to a certain village to find a wife but he failed because he had thin legs. So he returned to his house. But later, some of the girls who had turned him down went to get fruit. On their way they wanted water to drink. But the bird refused eo allow them to drink as they had refused him. One girl thereupon decided to marry him after all, and they all sang "I came to your village to marry you and you refused me on account of my legs, now I will take you to be my wife." Now the girl and the bird stayed together and often sang the same song together. "I went to your house to marry you and you refused m because of my thin legs." Eventually the girl ran away from the bird, but he went on singing all alone the very same song. Story song (Nthanu)

  • Description: An equivalent story to one in Southern Rhodesia. There were three girls who went to the river to get water. They had big strings of beads but one forgot her beads down by the river and when she got home she told her brothers and asked them to take her back to the river to look for them. They refused, so she went alone. She found a hyena who had taken her beads and put them inside a drum and then when she arrived he caught her and put her inside the drum also. He then went to the village to play the drum. The people of the village heard her singing inside the drum. They cooked food and gave it to the hyena who, as soon as he had eaten the food began to play the drum. He went to another village and did the same. The girl inside the drum got very hot but eventually her brothers saved her by cutting open the drum and the hyena diasppeared. A were-wolf story. Nthano story.

There seems to be some sound common sense about this song but somehow it escapes the singers whose minds have receded towrds the pleasures of trivialities. It is a good thing to have your wits about you when drinking away from home or you may be tempted to make such observations as I am sure there used to be a house here.   • Description: There was once a man with one leg called Salimwendo. Now Salimwendo was a thief. He married a young girl and he told the girl "I have plenty of goats, fowls and sheep at home and you will not be short of relish if you marry me." One day he went out stealing a goat, and he was chased by the owner who called out his friends "catch him-Salimwendo, catch hm". Salimwendo ran away to his owm house and quickly sang to his wife inside. "Open the door for me, quickly, your share will be the liver". So she opened the door and he was safe inside. But he did not give her her share. The next day Salimwendo went out to steal a fowl. He was chased again, but he was not quick enough. The owner caught him outside his own door as his wife had refused to open the door. Salimwendo was taken by the man to the Chief who said he must give back both the goat and the fowl and on top of that his wife left him as she did not like to live with a greedy man who also told her lies about his goats, fowls and sheep. "There is Salimwendo, catch him. the one with one leg, catch him." "Girl open the door for me quickly, quickly. I will give you your share. the liver." Nthanu story.

  • Description: The instruments were made in 1955. The main xylophone was played by an older boy (about seventeen years). They are very simple, frame xylophones, crudely made. The leader is called Nyanga and the other players are Anamovi. The instrument is three legged. The resonating gourds are fastened alternately up and down as they are too large to place side by side. Two legs are fixed at the bass end and one at the trebler, the structure being so constructed as to lean the instrument over towards the player. The performers were three young boys between the ages of seven and tweleve years. The dance which accompanied this music is a simple ring dance with little action beyond a shuffle. Ulimba dance for young boys and girls with 2 xylophones.
