- Description: There can be little doubt that manufacturing industry is one of the principal vehicles in the process of economic growth and development. The effect of growth in output and employment in this sector usually stimulates other sectors making for an expansion of output and employment opportunities across an entire economy. This paper is thus concerned with the development of manufacturing industry in Ciskei over the past decade as well as its prospects for growth in the foreseeable future. The paper itself falls into five sections. Section 1 provides a brief historical overview of political and constitutional developments and of industrial growth in the Border region and in Ciskei ever the past fifteen years. Section 2 outlines the current incentive package and indicates its impact on the industrial sector of Ciskei. Section 3 considers the recommendations of the Swart Commission while Section 4 discusses the role and activities of the Ciskei People's Development Bank. The reason for choosing Lester’s methods of visual analysis is that it can be applied to all fields of visual art and design. Contemporary fashion photography draws on many different stylistic devices and periods in history for its re-invention, so it is important to understand what constitutes the defining characteristics of a stylistic period in history to be able to revisit it in contemporary photography.

It is felt that a leader’s cultural intelligence could be instrumental in moderating employee perceptions of organisational politics and their respective behaviours. The influence of a methylated-β-Cyclodextrin on the solubility and photostability of midazolam in aqueous solution

- Description: Midazolam, used clinically as an anticonvulsant, anxiolytic, muscle relaxant and sedative is a photolabile imidazo-benzodiazepine which is marketed under the trade names Dormicum® and Hypnovel® as tablets and injectables. Because of an aqueous solubility of < 0.1 mg/ml above pH 4, the preparation of aqueous dosage formulations near physiological pH, requires a solubilizer. The aim of this study was thus to prepare a 10 mg/ml midazolam aqueous solution for topical application using randomly-methylated-pcyclodextrin (RAMEB), considered to be a suitable candidate as a solubilizer because of its absorption enhancing properties, and to investigate its effect on both the solubility and the photostability of midazolam. Solubility studies of midazolam (excess of 15 mg/ml) in the presence of 0, 5,10,20, 30% m/v of RAMEB at pH 5.0 and pH 5.8 (phosphate buffer) were undertaken and the results analyzed using a UV method validated for linearity, accuracy, precision and specificity. A stability-indicating HPLC method was developed and validated (precision and accuracy, linearity, range, limit of quantitation, specificity, robustness and ruggedness) for application to kinetic photostability studies and the identification of photodegradants by LC-MS. Forced degradation studies were carried out at concentrations of 0.5 mg/ml of midazolam instead of the target concentration of 10 mg/ml because of the acceleratory effect of the decreased concentration on the rate of photodegradation. The solutions of midazolam with and without RAMEB were irradiated at 550 W/m² for 12 hrs in order to degrade the drug to ± 10% of the original concentration. The UV method proved to be valid in terms of linearity with a correlation coefficient of 0.9998, precise and accurate, and specific for the determination of midazolam in the presence of RAMEB. The results of the phase solubility studies indicated that desired solubility of 10 mg/ml was achieved with 30% m/v RAMEB at pH 5.0. RAMEB slightly decreased the photostability of midazolam, the rate constants being 0.137 and 0.154 hr⁻¹ in the absence and presence of RAMEB, respectively. LC-MS analysis revealed that one of the major photoproducts in the presence and absence of RAMEB was N-desalkylflurazepam, a starting material in the synthesis of midazolam. RAMEB inhibited formation of some photoproducts and introduced two new photoproducts, a dimer and an addition product. The difference in the nature of these photoproducts formed may be attributed to the ability of RAMEB to provide conformational control and to stabilize free radicals. Although RAMEB improved the solubility of midazolam to the target concentration, photostability is decreased with the presence of different photoproducts. - Description: Many organisations are continuously searching for methods which can be used to improve performance. One such method is by means of implementing a performance management programme. This research study addresses the influence that a performance management programme has on the achievement of organisational and individual performance. To achieve this objective a comprehensive literature study was performed to determine the views on performance, and on performance management programmes. The study also included an investigation into the extent to which a performance management programme should be aligned with organisational and individual goals. Questionnaires, developed from the literature study, were distributed amongst randomly selected respondents, in order to determine the extent to which a specific organisation manages performance, in line with the guidelines provided by the literature study. The information obtained from the questionnaires were compared with the guidelines provided by the literature study in order to identify shortcomings in the influence that the performance management programme has on the achievement of organisational and individual goals at the selected organisation. The final step of this study entailed the formulation of recommendations. Three of these recommendations are regarded as critical to ensure the successful improvement of performance by means of a performance management programme: Firstly, it is of utmost importance that training and development, and the necessary resources to achieve objectives is provided. Secondly, feedback forms an integral part of a performance management programme. Those who provide feedback, need to acquire the necessary skills, so as to ensure that both positive and negative feedback is given to employees, which could ultimately enhance performance. Thirdly, the success of a performance management programme resides with both management and employees. Management need to be committed to the programme, and the well-being of their employees. Management also needs to be able to eliminate problems that negatively influence performance. On the other hand, employees need to realise that a performance management programme is not only linked to pay, but also the development of each individual, and the improvement of performance.

The influence of abiotic factors on the distribution of Biomphalaria pfeifferi (Krauss, 1848) (Planorbidae: Mollusca) and its lifecycle in South-Eastern Africa

- Description: Previous studies on the influence of abiotic factors on the distribution of bilharzia intermediate host snails of the family Planorbidae are reviewed. Much of this work is basically descriptive and relatively few attempts have been made to examine the effects of these factors on snails in their natural habitats - to identify the factors precisely and to measure their critical levels. An account is given of recent studies on Eiomphalaria pfeifferi (Krauss) in two climatically different regions of southeastern Africa, at 6S5m altitude on the eastern Transvaal escarpment and 19m on the coastal peneplain of northern Zululand. These have shown the species to undergo a similar annual life-cycle of three overlapping generations in both areas. Further, in these areas where the snail has a discontinuous distribution, two abiotic factors, stream geology and water temperature, were found to be important in limiting its distribution. The longitudinal distribution of B. pfeifferi and another host snail Bulinus (Physopsis) globosus (Morelat), extended upstream in a perennial watercourse, the Gladdespruit, on the escarpment only as far as permanently lentic habitats were available. These habitats, usually detached from the channel, characterized the stream's lowest physical zone with its substratum of exposed granite, as opposed to the sandy-bottomed lotic zones upstream. The limit of the snails' occurrence lay close to the junction of these two substratum types. Granite is resistant to erosion but contains soft inclusions which erode more quickly than the hard matrix causing uneven weathering. This results in the formation of depressions in the stream bed (i.e. pools, potholes and backwaters) which provide the permanently lentic conditions necessary for the snails' survival. Temperature recordings made on this plain, upstream of the snails' limit, suggest that the water temperature here exceeded the critical lower levels required for a positive intrinsic rate of natural increase sufficiently often to permit the species to survive here, though not optimally. Above this point however, current velocities are continually in excess of the maximum tolerated (0.3 m/sec.) so that in this situation at least, current velocity is a dominant factor. A contrasting situation exists on the coastal peneplain of northern Zululand where B. pfeifferi occurs in some lentic habitats and not in others. This discontinuous distribution is shown to be related to the prolonged duration of temperatures above the level for optimal increase. The apparently suitable habitats from which B. pfeifferi was absent were found to be both very shallow and to experience these prolonged high temperatures during spring and early summer. This corresponds to the maturation period of the B. pfeifferi 1st generation as defined by Appleton (1974) and causes reduced fecundity probably through impaired gonad development. The density of its filial (2nd) generation is correspondingly reduced. A statistically significant partial-correlation (at a 1% level) was found between the fecundity of the 1st generation and increasing periods of temperatures above the species' optimal limit in the habitats involved during its maturation period (spring). It is interesting to nate here that B. (Ph.) globosus, which is known to be better adapted to high temperatures than B. pfeifferi (Shiff & Husting, 1966) occurred in all the waterbodies concerned. Both these factors therefore play important roles in determining the country-wide distribution pattern of the host snails. This distribution is closely correlated with the availability of permanently lentic habitats. In river systems, which form the main environment for these snails, such stable habitats occur almost entirely in low-gradient reaches over hard bed-rock which is resistant to erosion. Current velocities above 0.3 m/sec. render steeper reaches and those over soft, non-resistant rock and sand (unstable substrata) unsuitable and therefore constitute a most important limiting factor. Temperature however becomes a dominant factor in permanently lentic waterbodies. Biomphalaria pfeifferi is adversely affected by high temperature regimes and where such regimes occur in waterbodies which are too shallow to permit temperature gradient to develop, the species cannot survive whereas B. (Ph.) globosus can do so. This intolerance of high temperature regimes on the part of B. pfeifferi accounts for the species' adoption of a discontinuous distribution over the coastal plain of south-eastern Africa. A comparable pattern has been reported for the species over this plain northwards to approximately 16°S latitude in Mozambique and is probably due to a similar high-temperature effect. Further northwards in equatorial latitudes B. pfeifferi is restricted to the more elevated and cooler areas above an altitude of 500 - 600 m, probably because the very high temperature regimes prevailing in the lowlands there exclude the species altogether.

This results in the formation of depressions in the stream bed (i.e. pools, potholes and backwaters) which provide the permanently lentic conditions necessary for the snails' survival. Temperature recordings made on this plain, upstream of the snails' limit, suggest that the water temperature here exceeded the critical lower levels required for a positive intrinsic rate of natural increase sufficiently often to permit the species to survive here, though not optimally. Above this point however, current velocities are continually in excess of the maximum tolerated (0.3 m/sec.) so that in this situation at least, current velocity is a dominant factor. A contrasting situation exists on the coastal peneplain of northern Zululand where B. pfeifferi occurs in some lentic habitats and not in others. This discontinuous distribution is shown to be related to the prolonged duration of temperatures above the level for optimal increase. The apparently suitable habitats from which B. pfeifferi was absent were found to be both very shallow and to experience these prolonged high temperatures during spring and early summer. This corresponds to the maturation period of the B. pfeifferi 1st generation as defined by Appleton (1974) and causes reduced fecundity probably through impaired gonad development. The density of its filial (2nd) generation is correspondingly reduced. A statistically significant partial-correlation (at a 1% level) was found between the fecundity of the 1st generation and increasing periods of temperatures above the species' optimal limit in the habitats involved during its maturation period (spring). It is interesting to nate here that B. (Ph.) globosus, which is known to be better adapted to high temperatures than B. pfeifferi (Shiff & Husting, 1966) occurred in all the waterbodies concerned. Both these factors therefore play important roles in determining the country-wide distribution pattern of the host snails. This distribution is closely correlated with the availability of permanently lentic habitats. In river systems, which form the main environment for these snails, such stable habitats occur almost entirely in low-gradient reaches over hard bed-rock which is resistant to erosion. Current velocities above 0.3 m/sec. render steeper reaches and those over soft, non-resistant rock and sand (unstable substrata) unsuitable and therefore constitute a most important limiting factor. Temperature however becomes a dominant factor in permanently lentic waterbodies. Biomphalaria pfeifferi is adversely affected by high temperature regimes and where such regimes occur in waterbodies which are too shallow to permit temperature gradient to develop, the species cannot survive whereas B. (Ph.) globosus can do so. This intolerance of high temperature regimes on the part of B. pfeifferi accounts for the species' adoption of a discontinuous distribution over the coastal plain of south-eastern Africa. A comparable pattern has been reported for the species over this plain northwards to approximately 16°S latitude in Mozambique and is probably due to a similar high-temperature effect. Further northwards in equatorial latitudes B. pfeifferi is restricted to the more elevated and cooler areas above an altitude of 500 - 600 m, probably because the very high temperature regimes prevailing in the lowlands there exclude the species altogether.

Cleared sites have remained bare for long periods, indicating that soil properties are not favourable for indigenous propagule re-establishment. The aim of this research was to assess how A. mearnsii invasion and clearing affect fynbos recovery through its impact on soils. This was done by characterising vegetation and soil properties on fynbos, infested and cleared slopes. Vegetation cover for various growth forms was determined and a species list was compiled for each plot. There are considerable repercussions related to the costs of re-educating students and re-admitting failing students into continuously growing classes. Furthermore, there is a protruding argument that the level of student readiness/preparedness is continually declining. The above-mentioned challenges place extreme pressure on higher education institutions and their staff to provide academic support to students, along with maintaining adequate pass rates. Reflecting on the challenges faced in the South African higher educational context, it is evident that the development and implementation of academic support programmes are important. These programmes are aimed at providing quality learning and teaching and counteracting declining success rates. In addition, there is a need to transform how massification of higher education takes place, to address the challenges of diverse student profiles, dropout rates and low throughput rates. This study explored the impact of academic support interventions on academic performance by focusing on student engagement as it is the leading factor of academic success. For the purpose of this study, this was measured through the attendance of academic interventions. Student engagement may be defined as the time and energy learners dedicate to educational activities both inside and outside of the classroom, along with the policies and practices institutions use to persuade students to partake in these activities. The findings revealed that academic interventions indeed have a positive influence on student behaviour and student academic progress. The results of this study could assist the department of HRM in determining the effectiveness of academic interventions created for first year students.

The study therefore presents some enablers and constraints in respect of learning, agency formation, social change and transformation potentially influenced by the REDD. This is a qualitative case study that explored ‘learning’1 from living experiences of local people at the PKFR and from local mechanisms of the REDD project. Reflexive workshop interventions were used to validate the performance of local REDD practices against the adaptive co-management framework. Other data was obtained through interviews, focus-group discussion, the analysis of documents and direct observations. The study found that individual people may deepen their understanding of forestry issues through collaborative interrelations. Social learning in the PKFR community was potentially stimulated by people’s relational interactions, reflective thinking and anticipations, and questioning of past practices. Learning occurred subtly, and the learning process was not endured firmly enough to foster the complex learning dynamics necessary for transformational changes. As a result, most of the REDD-stimulated learning did not transform the practices desired in the project.

Little attention however, has been paid to the specific relationship between peak isokinetic muscle strength and sprint starting performance. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of an adapted front knee angle, as determined by isokinetic assessment (the angle of peak torque production), on starting performance. Sixteen track sprinters, of elite-national or competitive-regional standard, were asked to perform eight sprints over 50m using four separate starting techniques. Technique 1 featured the athlete’s usual starting preferences while Techniques 2, 3 and 4 featured a standardised set of starting preferences with experimental modifications of the front knee angle in the “set” position. Isokinetic muscle strength was measured at slow (60°/s) and fast (240°/s) test speeds in order to determine the angle of peak torque production for concentric knee extension of each subject’s lead leg. Using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Post Hoc analysis (LSD), no significant differences (p>0.05) were observed between the experimental techniques for: block time, force-time measures during block time, sprint times, sprint velocity and acceleratio n measures at intervals up to 50m. Significant differences (p<0.05) were however observed between reaction times for the experimental techniques. Slower reaction times are most likely due to increased upper body pretension, resulting from the increased hip elevation seen for these techniques. The results indicate that increased hip elevation may have delayed the initiation of the relevant motor response required to affect an optimal sprint start. Technique 1 resulted in the shortest reaction times, shortest block times, fastest sprint times and greatest sprint velocities for all four techniques. This result was possibly due to the athlete’s experience with, and repeated use of, this technique. The experimental techniques therefore provided no added advantage over the subject’s preferred starting technique and did not significantly optimise sprint starting performance. The results show that modification of the front knee angle had no significant influence on sprint starting performance and sprint running ve locity or acceleration patterns up to 50m. Using Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient to determine the strongest correlations between isokinetic knee strength and sprint starting performance, analysis revealed that the strongest relationships were found between sprint starting performance expressed as acceleration and isokinetic knee strength expressed as relative peak torque and absolute peak torque. For Technique 1 the strongest correlation was found between acceleration (30m - 40m) and relative peak torque as measured at a test speed of 240°/s (r = 0.62). For the remaining experimental techniques, the strongest correlation was found between acceleration (10m - 20m) and relative peak torque as measured at a test speed of 60°/s (r = 0.53) for Technique 2, between acceleration (40m - 50m) and peak torque measured at a test speed of 60°/s (r = 0.72) for Technique 3, and between acceleration (0m - 5m) and peak torque as measured at a test speed of 240°/s (r = 0.71) for Technique 4. These results suggest that isokinetic muscle strength does not correlate strongly with sprint starting performance and that additional factors, such as neuromuscular organisation and muscle fibre typing, possibly make a greater contribution to optimal sprint starting performance.

Using Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient to determine the strongest correlations between isokinetic knee strength and sprint starting performance, analysis revealed that the strongest relationships were found between sprint starting performance expressed as acceleration and isokinetic knee strength expressed as relative peak torque and absolute peak torque. For Technique 1 the strongest correlation was found between acceleration (30m - 40m) and relative peak torque as measured at a test speed of 240°/s (r = 0.62). For the remaining experimental techniques, the strongest correlation was found between acceleration (10m - 20m) and relative peak torque as measured at a test speed of 60°/s (r = 0.53) for Technique 2, between acceleration (40m - 50m) and peak torque measured at a test speed of 60°/s (r = 0.72) for Technique 3, and between acceleration (0m - 5m) and peak torque as measured at a test speed of 240°/s (r = 0.71) for Technique 4. These results suggest that isokinetic muscle strength does not correlate strongly with sprint starting performance and that additional factors, such as neuromuscular organisation and muscle fibre typing, possibly make a greater contribution to optimal sprint starting performance.

These dominant ant species influenced the insect fauna by their strong dependence on honeydew, encouraging a build up in numbers of Homoptera on the branches and leaves of foraged trees, and supporting homopterous populations within the confines of their nest compartments . The exclusion of ants from trees led to fewer "mobile" homopterans (Aphididae, Membracidae, Psyllidae and Cicadellidae) and "sessile" homopterans (mainly Coccidae but also Pseudococcidae). Pyrethrum spraying showed that the guild composition of non-homopterous insects was similar on banded and unbanded trees. Differences in the level of herbivory on banded and unbanded trees suggested that, although slight, foraged trees were protected from some damage by the presence of ant species within the canopy. A trend did exist towards a greater number of insect individuals and species on unbanded trees, and it is postulated that during the period 1982 1984 when drought conditions prevailed over Nylsvley, ants do not reduce insect numbers through predation or disturbance but simply deter phyllophagous feeding. A separate experiment showed that Crematogaster constructor would feed on the eggs and early instar larvae of the saturnid moth, Cirina forda, but low numbers of lepidopterous larvae on the trees may have forced ants to seek honeydew. The negative impact of large homopterous populations on foraged trees was only seen in an isolated field observation where Polyrachis schistacea was found to associate with the lac insect Tachardina sp . . In conclusion it can be said that where homopterans are not the dominant phyllophages, plants do benefit from foraging populations of ants in that damage to the leaves is reduced.

Using a handheld plasma metabolite analyzer, I evaluated the foraging success of syntonic bats and rarer allotonic bats (using echolocation frequencies outside the hearing range of eared moths), in areas with artificial light and in areas of natural darkness. I used microscope diet analysis to determine whether bats were consuming more or fewer moths in areas with artificial light and in areas of natural darkness. Syntonic bats were more selective for moth prey under lit conditions, likely owing to a reduction in the ability of tympanate moths to evade bats. Moths increased in the diets of generalist syntonic bats (Pipistrellus hesperidus) foraging around artificial light sources. Some P. hesperidus individuals showed high β-hydroxybutyrate levels around lights, but there was no difference in β-hydroxybutyrate levels between lit and unlit conditions. There is insufficient evidence to reject the null hypothesis that the foraging success of syntonic bats is equivalent in lit vs unlit conditions. The foraging success and diets of allotonic bats, Rhinolophus capensis, appear to be negligibly impacted by artificial light on a small scale. My study emphasizes the need for a mechanistic understanding of the influence of artificial light on the foraging success of bat species. Bat-moth interactions may be influenced by other factors apart from the common assumption that increased refuelling rates will occur in syntonic species foraging on moths around artificial light.

Focus group discussions were also used to supplement the household survey. The data was descriptively analysed using a triangulation method. The findings show that social grants, mainly pensions and non-farm employment, and child support grants are the major sources of income. The majority of the households own five hectares of land and more, in which they grow crops only in gardens adjacent to their homes. However, 29 percent do not produce any crops at all. Farming contributes a small portion to the household income. The choice of farming is more powerful than the external factors. Interest in farming is minimal and can be related to the declining farming activities; therefore, household aspirations have an influence on changing livelihood aspirations. In the case of the rural areas of Ndabakazi – as indeed in many other parts of South Africa - policies of rural development mostly take a top-down approach; as a result most of these policies do not become effective in achieving the intended outcome. Development practitioners should incorporate beneficiaries when planning so as to tailor the development initiatives with the aspirations of local people for them to be effect and achieve intended goals thus a bottom-up approach. The notion that rural household farming activities have declined because they lack inputs, farming implements other necessary support is not always true. Some households are not interested in farming and they cannot be forced.

This study examined the relationship between Authentic leadership and a safety Culture in the tyre industry of South Africa. The purpose of the study was to increase the workplace safety culture in the South African tyre manufacturing industry by investigating whether the implementation of an authentic leadership programs would positively influence workplace culture. An exploratory study used a quantitative research design involving an email survey to examine the relationship between Authentic Leadership and Safety Culture. Authentic leadership and the safety climate were assessed using the Norwegian Offshore Risk and Safety Climate Inventory (NORSC), the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire, and the questionnaire from Fulele and Kadam. Seven safety climate dimensions were mapped onto the questionnaire. The data from the questionnaire were analysed using STATISTICA software. According to respondents there is a very strong relationship between Authentic Leadership and the implantation of OHSA standards in the tyre industry in South Africa. In addition, respondents rated their management’s implementation of the organisation’s safety routines highly. There was a high level of motivation among respondents to act in a safe manner. This study, which adopts a case study approach, aims to establish the influence of the brief development process on the outcome of Government projects in the Eastern Cape. Through the reviewed literature and primary data collection, the study aimed at establishing the influence of the brief that is utilised for a need analysis, to define a detailed scope of works, stakeholder engagement and the time management on Eastern Cape Government project outcomes. The Sarah Baartman district was the selected geographical scope of research. Five projects were selected; these included three schools, one emergency medical service facility and one office facility. The study revealed that Eastern Cape Government projects brief development is based on the client department 2013 Published Norms and Standards for state buildings and a need analysis for other stakeholders is not considered. The study further revealed that there is no stakeholder management in government projects; therefore, there is no stakeholder engagement plan during the brief development. The study further revealed that government time management is suboptimal because stakeholder needs are not realised. The research also found that Eastern Cape Government projects do not achieve stakeholder satisfaction and are delivered late. However, some Government projects are able to meet the desired quality and are within budget. The study thus proposes that the Eastern Cape Government projects need to adopt the dynamic brief development process and implement stakeholder management. The brief development process should be an ongoing process extending throughout the project life cycle responding in an innovative manner to emerging stakeholder requirements.
