Education in times of COVID-19: Looking for silver linings in the Southern Africa’s educational responses

- Description: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has disrupted socio-economic activities, including formal and non-formal education, across the world at lightning speed. By mid-April 2020, it had interrupted the formal education of nearly 1.6 billion students in 192 countries. COVID-19’s disruption of education in Africa, and especially in southern Africa, has been severe for several reasons. However, educational responses to COVID-19 suggest that it has stimulated the appetite for developing educational innovations – silver linings to the COVID-19 cloud. This paper is based on interviews conducted with 56 parents, students and educators involved in formal and non-formal education in Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. We identified the main educational challenges in these countries as being concerned with adapting to: (i) online education and learning, (ii) continuity of education from home, and (iii) community-based learning in small groups. The silver linings that we identified are: (i) putting greater emphasis on finding context-specific solutions to education and health problems (improvisation), which is important for educational relevance and reveals the value of local actors, (ii) making linkages between social and ecological systems clearer, which is making the value of education for sustainable development (ESD) in this century more explicit, and (iii) revealing structural inequality and justice issues in education, which draws attention to the need for urgently addressing them as part of transformative change in education and sustainable development.

Informal rules may include among others, customs, norms and standards, religion, indigenous law while formal rules may include laws, constitutions, policies, markets and firms. This study used a survey design, quantitative and qualitative research methodologies involving the use of questionnaire. The data for this study was collected from 114 households which are Agri-park project beneficiaries, the extension officer, project site manager and local economic development officer. The data were collected through face to face and telephonic interviews. Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) framework and Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 20.0) were used for descriptive analysis in order to identify the existing local institutions and how they should be strengthen. The results showed that a number of local institutions do exist. The main findings of this study were as follows: (1) Project beneficiaries were aware of their stakeholders and that they knew the roles and responsibilities of each stakeholder in the project. (2) Traditional leaders were aware about the project and that they have a major role to play. (3) Project beneficiaries have organized themselves into groups of co-operatives and their co-operatives are registered with the Department of Agriculture. (4) Project initiators are going to transfer the ownership of the project to these communities after it becomes well established. (5) There was a mutual agreement of youth employment rotation in the project between these four communities. (6) The condition of lease agreement for a land where the project currently running is 9 months renewable contract with the rental payment of R 6300.00 per annum. (7) The lease agreement gives the church a property right to reclaim the land should payments not be made. (8) Project beneficiaries possess some agricultural skills and that they have received various training. - Description: Globally, SMEs are valued for their contribution to economic growth and development as well as for driving employment. To succeed, small firms require support especially in terms of obtaining funding and financial services that can enable them to meet day to day operational needs. Commercial banks play an important role for the financing of SMEs as small firms generally depend on bank loans to obtain external finance. However, despite the support and contribution, very little attention is given to the actual forms of finance used by small and medium-sized enterprises, the available finance made by lending institutions or investors and the relation between the use of the said debt finance and enterprise performance. Furthermore, several research studies carried out focusing on the effect of debt financing on performance of firms are inconsistent. Thus, this study sought to determine the effectiveness of bank debt finance on the growth of SMEs in Namibia. To achieve the objective of the study, it was important to have it rooted in the pragmatism paradigm; followed by both the deductive and inductive approaches. Interviews were conducted with the six SME owners and structured questionnaires were completed by the seven staff of the selected bank. The study used thematic analysis to analyze primary data from interviews by following three steps namely: reducing the data referred to as coding, analyzing data by creating patterns, and generating themes and drawing conclusion. Data from self-administered questionnaires was populated and textually analyzed aided by tables. The main findings of the study were that: (1) debt financing contributed to the growth and performance of SMEs as all firms under the study who made use of debt had experienced growth in terms of generated profits and acquired assets, (2) during the assessment and approving process, the bank looked at various lending factors and that collateral was not considered as prime to accessing funding, (3) the SMEs were not sufficiently funded and that there was no appropriate funding option for SMEs, (4) in terms of relationships, there was a lack of engagement and support between the bank and the SMEs. The study was guided by the following objectives: to investigate if education influences women’s career advancement in the construction industry of South Africa, to establish the extent to which gender negatively impacts women’s career advancement in the construction industry of South Africa, to determine the rate at which women are promoted to senior leadership positions in the construction industry of South Africa, and to establish the extent to which the construction industry of South Africa goes to retain women within the industry. According to the study's findings, women in South Africa's construction industry have prospered from their qualifications (education). They stated that their education influenced their career path. The respondents believe that their gender does not prevent them from pursuing management positions. Women's retention in the construction industry is gradually improving. It was suggested that women be allowed more liberty in leadership roles so that they can perform to their full potential. Flexible working hours must be made available to women in order for them to be able to manage job and family obligations. Thermosetting hydrogels were prepared using different ratios of poloxamer 407 (L127), poloxamer 188 (L68) and CarbopolVR 974 P NF (C974) using the cold production process. The in situ thermosetting hydrogel was optimized using Box Behken design. Co-solvency approach was used to increase the solubility of lamotrigine by dissolving it in propylene glycol and polyethylene glycol 400 (0.2: 0.8) and the resultant solution was incorporated in the hydrogel to manufacture an LTG hydrogel. The presence of a higher amount of L127 resulted in higher viscosity at 22 0C and 34 0C and decreased the overall release of LTG. An increase in the amount of C974 resulted in a decrease in the pH of the hydrogel. The results show that formulations F10, F12, F13, F14, F15, F16 and F17 exhibited acceptable thermosetting behavior, pH and released adequate Lamotrigine above the minimum effective concentration to treat generalized epilepsy. The optimized formulation exhibited acceptable thermosetting behavior, pH and lamotrigine release but formed a stiff gel at 22 0C. The average LTG content of the optimized hydrogel was 5.00 ± 0.0225mg/ml with % recovery of 99.17%. The amount of LTG released at 12 h from the optimized hydrogel was 3.21 ± 0.0155mg and will be therapeutically effective in the brain after absorption via the olfactory region in the nasal cavity.

- Description: Photophysical and photochemical properties of a series of tetra- and octaglycosylated zinc phthalocyanines (ZnPcs) substituted with glucose and galactose moieties have been reported. Spectral properties of these phthalocyanines are compared in DMSO. Absorption spectra of the non-peripherally tetra-substituted ZnPcs 2 showed a significant red shift in their Q-band maxima as compared to the peripherally substituted analog 1. All the complexes gave high triplet quantum yields ranging from 0.68 to 0.88, whereas triplet lifetimes were in the range of 100–430 µs in argon-saturated solutions. The octagalactosylated ZnPc 3b showed the highest triplet quantum yield and singlet oxygen quantum yield of 0.88 and 0.69, respectively. The fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes of all the compounds under investigation were within the range of zinc phthalocyanine complexes.

- Description: Photophysical and photochemical properties of a series of tetra- and octaglycosylated zinc phthalocyanines (ZnPcs) substituted with glucose and galactose moieties have been reported. Spectral properties of these phthalocyanines are compared in DMSO. Absorption spectra of the non-peripherally tetra-substituted ZnPcs 2 showed a significant red shift in their Q-band maxima as compared to the peripherally substituted analog 1. All the complexes gave high triplet quantum yields ranging from 0.68 to 0.88, whereas triplet lifetimes were in the range of 100–430 µs in argon-saturated solutions. The octagalactosylated ZnPc 3b showed the highest triplet quantum yield and singlet oxygen quantum yield of 0.88 and 0.69, respectively. The fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes of all the compounds under investigation were within the range of zinc phthalocyanine complexes.

In this regard, literature has revealed that many Science teachers in Namibia do not consider learners’ local indigenous knowledge (IK) also known as indigenous technology to mediate learning. Yet, it is a requirement of the Namibian Science curriculum. I assume that this could be due in part to the fact that the Science curriculum is not explicit on how IK should be integrated into Science teaching. It is against this backdrop that this study sought to explore the opportunities IK integration into Science may offer in mediating learning and sense-making on the topic of carbon dioxide (CO2). Learners’ indigenous technological practices of making oshikundu and uumboloto were used as vehicles of learning. This qualitative case study is underpinned by the interpretive and indigenous research paradigms. Within the indigenous research paradigm, I focused on the Ubuntu perspective. This study was conducted at a rural under-resourced school in the Ohangwena region in Namibia. Thirty Grade 8 learners, one science teacher and two expert community members were involved as participants. Data were gathered using focus group interviews (sharing circles), group activities, participatory observations, and journal reflections. Data interpretation and analysis were done using Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory and Ogunniyi’s contiguity argumentative theory. A thematic approach to data analysis was adopted. That is, an inductive approach was employed whereby sub-themes were identified, and thereafter common sub-themes were combined into themes. The objectives of the study were: to assess the leadership values at Cecilia Makiwane hospital and determine their alignment with section 195 of the Constitution, to determine the implementation of the constitutional values and principles enshrined in chapter 10 of the Constitution, to examine the working conditions of the hospital, to evaluate the service quality at Cecilia Makiwane hospital., and to recommend measures and strategies that can be implemented to promote efficiency, effectiveness and economical use of resources at Cecilia Makiwane hospital. The study found that the implementation of the constitutional values and principles at Cecilia Makiwane hospital is not satisfactory. The findings show unethical leadership practices, and they put their interests first above the public needs. Regarding good human resources practices, the staff lacks career growth development programs, while promotion opportunities are influenced by nepotism and favouritism. Objectives: This study came as a result of the growing interest focussed on creating and implementing cooperation to facilitate management of supply chain-related activities in the humanitarian sector. This study therefore sought to gain a better understanding of the effectiveness of supply chain cooperation in aid delivery performance variables, specifically in the context of Cyclone Idai humanitarian relief operations in Zimbabwe. Method: A pragmatic research paradigm was adopted, where the researchers took a mixed approach informed by both quantitative and qualitative research tools. Results: Findings of this study show a significant and positive impact of humanitarian supply chain (HSC) cooperation in achieving output, resource and flexibility performance in the delivery of aid. These findings will change the shape of humanitarian response to have more cooperation amongst organisations rather than responding as single entities. Conclusion: This study will therefore contribute to how humanitarian organisations improve their approach to future disasters through cooperation in their supply chain activities. Theoretically, the study will show how supply chain cooperation is key to humanitarian responses, thus improving effectiveness of HSC when put into practice. Policymakers can use these findings to develop a standard framework of how humanitarian organisations should collectively respond to disasters. This research, following the Design Science Research Methodology (DSRM) process, developed an IT governance conceptual framework (HISIG-CF), to inform the interoperability of health information systems. The HISIG-CF is developed from literature and qualitative data collected using an expert reviews method from practitioners in the healthcare sector who evaluated the constructs of the HISIG-CF. - Description: This research took the form of an explanatory case study focused within a single organisation to evaluate talent management practices of recently hired employees from the perspective of the psychological contract. The theory underpinning this research is Resource-Based Theory (RBT) in the context of Talent Management. The research aims were: 1) to analyse how talent management practices have affected the psychological contract, 2) to analyse how employees have responded and intend to respond if there has been a breach in the contract and 3) to analyse how employees have responded or intend to respond where psychological contract expectations have been met. The key concepts identified include talent management and the psychological contract. The literature therefore expanded on talent management highlighting the importance of recruiting, attracting and retaining talent, especially in a global context where experience and skills are a source of competitive advantage. Following this, the concept of the psychological contract was used as a lens through which to analyse the experience of individuals, specifically focusing on new employees joining the organisation, to assess their socialisation and onboarding experience. The literature further explored the importance of focusing on new employees, as this is deemed by the literature as a critical time of transition in the shaping of the psychological contract. In further reviewing the literature regarding early onboarding, further review of the literature identified important components, including (1) socialisation and onboarding, (2) performance management and probation, (3) employee development and (4) work conditions. From reviewing the literature four propositions were deduced as follows: • Proposition 1: All integrative processes in early onboarding influence the initial psychological contract of the employee. Proposition 1 was further divided into three sub propositions as follows: Sub Proposition 1a) HR plays a key role in early onboarding, influencing the initial psychological contract; Sub Proposition 1b) Supervisor support plays a key role in early onboarding, influencing the initial psychological contract; and IV Sub Proposition 1c) The work team plays a key role in early onboarding, influencing the initial psychological contract. • Proposition 2 stated: Performance discussions influence the psychological contract. • Proposition 3: Employee development opportunities are a source of motivation in the fulfilment of the psychological contract. • Proposition 4: Employment conditions influence the fulfilment of the psychological contract. The research followed a qualitative approach, using deductive analysis to analyse the data collected from semi-structured interviews. The findings and discussion show that the propositions confirmed the literature and were relevant to the case study at hand. Where there was varying degree of experience regarding the effect of the influence or impact on the psychological contract this was noted and expanded on accordingly. The study also recognised the additional context that presented itself within the findings, namely the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The research concludes in acknowledging the delimitations and limitations of the study while making suggestions for areas of future studies. To conclude, this research shows that the transition of a new employee in their early stages within the organisation is an opportunity to support in positively influencing and maintaining the psychological contract to support employee satisfaction and motivation. The research aims were: 1) to analyse how talent management practices have affected the psychological contract, 2) to analyse how employees have responded and intend to respond if there has been a breach in the contract and 3) to analyse how employees have responded or intend to respond where psychological contract expectations have been met. The key concepts identified include talent management and the psychological contract. The literature therefore expanded on talent management highlighting the importance of recruiting, attracting and retaining talent, especially in a global context where experience and skills are a source of competitive advantage. Following this, the concept of the psychological contract was used as a lens through which to analyse the experience of individuals, specifically focusing on new employees joining the organisation, to assess their socialisation and onboarding experience. The literature further explored the importance of focusing on new employees, as this is deemed by the literature as a critical time of transition in the shaping of the psychological contract. In further reviewing the literature regarding early onboarding, further review of the literature identified important components, including (1) socialisation and onboarding, (2) performance management and probation, (3) employee development and (4) work conditions. From reviewing the literature four propositions were deduced as follows: • Proposition 1: All integrative processes in early onboarding influence the initial psychological contract of the employee. Proposition 1 was further divided into three sub propositions as follows: Sub Proposition 1a) HR plays a key role in early onboarding, influencing the initial psychological contract; Sub Proposition 1b) Supervisor support plays a key role in early onboarding, influencing the initial psychological contract; and IV Sub Proposition 1c) The work team plays a key role in early onboarding, influencing the initial psychological contract. • Proposition 2 stated: Performance discussions influence the psychological contract. • Proposition 3: Employee development opportunities are a source of motivation in the fulfilment of the psychological contract. • Proposition 4: Employment conditions influence the fulfilment of the psychological contract. The research followed a qualitative approach, using deductive analysis to analyse the data collected from semi-structured interviews. The findings and discussion show that the propositions confirmed the literature and were relevant to the case study at hand. Where there was varying degree of experience regarding the effect of the influence or impact on the psychological contract this was noted and expanded on accordingly. The study also recognised the additional context that presented itself within the findings, namely the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The research concludes in acknowledging the delimitations and limitations of the study while making suggestions for areas of future studies. To conclude, this research shows that the transition of a new employee in their early stages within the organisation is an opportunity to support in positively influencing and maintaining the psychological contract to support employee satisfaction and motivation. If organisations can also appreciate that the psychological contract is dynamic and can change over time based on changing circumstances or needs, then this can be proactively monitored to support long-term retention of talent. , Thesis (MBA) -- Faculty of Commerce, Rhodes Business School, 2021

- Description: Given ethical failures in leadership, the actions and decisions of leaders are receiving renewed attention based on the role business plays in society. Business leaders need to demonstrate their willingness to consider their influence on society and not merely consider the demands and expectations of shareholders. Leaders must consider the ethical lens through which their decisions and actions are perceived. Service as a leadership competency can develop ethical leadership. Currently, service is not clearly defined and understood, and Pearse (2017) proposes five interrelated elements of service as a competency, namely individualised consideration, compassion, motivation to lead, humility and integrated thinking. The study examined if the five interrelated service elements are present when a leader at Director/CEO level exercises an act of service towards a follower. The study adopted a qualitative deductive thematic approach, collecting data through semi-structured interviews and using the critical incident technique to guide the interviews. The study's findings support the research proposition that service as a leadership competency consists of the five elements, but with some of these elements expanded. Service as a leadership competency is recommended to develop high-quality social relationships within an organisation, which will positively impact the corporate culture. Organisations can recruit and select leaders based on ethical leadership requirements and integrate these into performance management systems. Investigation of pharmaceutical residues and polybrominated diphenyl ethers in selected river estuaries and canal in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa

- Description: The increasing global pollution by contaminants of emerging concern due to industrialization, development, and improper handling of industrial and domestic waste is alarming. Some of these emerging contaminants are endocrine disruptors and persistent organic pollutants. Two groups of compounds (pharmaceuticals and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)) were considered for this study. Pharmaceuticals are drugs which we take to cure and nourish human and animal bodies, ranging from antibiotics, stimulants, psychiatric, to hormonal recipes among others. They are potentially toxic and comprise chemicals or active ingredients capable of disrupting hormones. They have been related to human and aquatic organisms' ecological risks, such as feminization and masculinization of fish, cancer, and disruption of the immune system. In recent times, pharmaceuticals are being tested in the Rivers of South Africa. PBDEs are human influential chemicals usually incorporated into products such as flame retardants, which can travel over a long distance. They are hydrophobic, lipophilic, environmentally persistent, and easily absorbed by aquatic organisms. About 209 congeners exist, and BDE- 17, 47, 66, 100, 153, 154, and 183 are frequently detected in the environment. The higher brominated congeners can debrominate to more toxic and lower congeners. Though they have low acute toxicity, their effect of interfering with the thyroid gland is long-term. They pose a risk such as immunological, neurological, carcinogenicity, and reproductive disruption. Water and sediment samples considered for investigation were collected from five different sites (Buffalo River Estuary, Sundays River Estuary, Swartkops River Estuary, Nahoon River Estuary, and Markman Canal stormwater). These sites are located in the two major cities hosting the two major Ports (East London and Port Elizabeth) in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Five sampling points were chosen for the collection of both water and sediment samples across three seasons that span from August to December in each of the mentioned sites. Nahoon River Estuary that was not sampled in winter seasons due to logistics and the global pandemic of year 2020; sediment sample was not collected at point NH5 for the spring season because of inaccessibility and topography of the sampling point. Ultrasonic extraction was utilized for sediment samples while SPE method with C-18 cartridges, was used to extract pharmaceuticals in water samples and for the purification of sediment extracts. A chromatographic column was employed for sediment purification. Analytes considered in this study were carbamazepine, caffeine, trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole, and testosterone. Nahoon River Estuary and Markman canal were considered for investigation of water and sediments for PBDEs. The samples were processed for analysis immediately on arrival to the laboratory after being stored in an ice chest at 4 oC. Physicochemical properties of water samples were taken on site. The temperature ranges from 15.5-24.5 oC for Markman and 24.5- 26.6 oC. Nahoon River Estuary. There was a correlation among the congeners except for BDE-153, which do not correlate with BDE- 17, 47, and 183 in Markman. However, BDE- 153 correlated with BDE-66 in Markman. The Ʃ5PBDE for water and Ʃ6PBDE sediment for all seasons were BDL – 1357 ng/L and BDL – 408.14 ng/g, respectively. The PBDEs mean concentrations in Nahoon water samples ranges from BDL-247 ng/L (spring). The dominant congeners in Nahoon Estuary and Markman Canal samples were BDE- 17 and BDE – 66. The temperature and pH of Swartkops River Estuary range from 16.66 – 25.15 oC, and 8.1 – 10.4, respectively. The pH of the Estuary was higher than that of the Markman Canal. The concentrations of pharmaceuticals in water samples were below detection limit. However, carbamazepine gave the highest concentration in sediment samples (23.86 μg/kg). SLF was not detected in sediment samples. The range of temperature for Buffalo River Estuary was lower than the other sites (18.10 – 20.22 oC); however, the pH showed no difference. Human and ecotoxicological risks were estimated for Markman Canal, Nahoon, Swartkops, Buffalo and Sundays River estuaries. The concentrations obtained for the two classes of contaminants in this study showed that PBDEs in Markman Canal sediment could pose a potential risk to humans, while Nahoon River Estuary poses no risk from PBDEs. Furthermore, the concentrations of caffeine in surface water of Sundays Estuary indicates low ecotoxicological risk to aquatic organisms (fish). Also, carbamazepine and trimethoprim levels (BDL – 9.50 and 1.39-2.00 μg/kg, respectively) suggest a high risk to aquatic organisms (bacteria, invertebrate, algae) in sediment of Buffalo, Sundays, and Swartkops estuaries, as well as Markman Canal.
