- Description: This thesis is concerned with the crisis of xenophobia in South Africa. It argues, firstly, that xenophobia itself is not primarily a reaction to poverty, inequality, or any other set of social conditions. Rather, xenophobia must be considered to be a collective political discourse which has arisen in post-apartheid South Africa from an exclusionary conception of state nationalism. Where this work may be distinguished from the majority of research on xenophobia in South Africa is in the fact that its particular focus is on instances where ‘ordinary’ South Africans have challenged and resisted xenophobic violence in their communities through collective political mobilisation. I suggest that these sites of resistance deserve careful consideration in their own right. I argue that they may demonstrate a subjective break with the oppressive politics of state nationalism through the affirmation of alternative political conceptions. Drawing on the political theory of Sylvain Lazarus, and his principal thesis that people are capable of thinking politics in ways which can subjectively think beyond the social and the extant (underscored by his political and methodological axiom, people think), this thesis argues that these sites of resistance show that people – and especially those who are considered to be marginalised from the domain of legitimate politics – can and do think politically, and it is in the thought of people that new and potentially emancipatory visions of politics may emerge.

- Description: This research aims to examine the relationship between music and social conditions within the context of apartheid . The focus area is the city of Durban, specifically 1960-1970. A case study of the multi-racial Durban-based band, The Flames 1963–1972) will be used to rigorously assess the extent to which social conditions and music can affect each other in both directions. This will also be the first coherent and historical narrative of the band, The Flames. As such, the thesis aims to make an original contribution to this field of music history, while it will provide the very first academic discussion of The Flames. South Africa during apartheid, with its racialised legislation provides an ideal context to scrutinize the effects (both potential and real) of music on social conditions. The Flames provide a particularly relevant case point; being a collective of “mixed-race” individuals classified as Coloured performing for a multi-racial fan- base. This means that at their concerts, audience members would have frequently been from a variety of different racial backgrounds. This would have been in direct contravention to the National Party‟s (NP) Separate Amenities Act as well as the policy of “separate development”, the cornerstone of apartheid. The thesis will firstly contextualise the research within the broader, global historical context, as well as in the existing theoretical literature which focuses on the relationship between music, politics and society. Firstly, this will entail a brief historical account of popular music around the world during the twentieth century. Through this we will observe both the ways in which the development and popularisation of various forms of popular music came to be shaped in a particular way, as well as the ways in which the public received this music. This will include an examination of positive responses to certain kinds of popular music which resonated and became popular with various sectors of society. Conversely, it will also closely examine the backlashes against these musical forms, and attempt to identify why certain sectors of the public were deeply opposed to particular kinds of popular music which may have been perceived to embody certain values and meanings. This will be conducted by studying various forms of popular music from the turn of the twentieth century into the early 1970s with a cross-cultural, global perspective, examining particular historical instances and existing theories relating to these instances. Chapter one will then shift from a global perspective and will situate the research within the South African musical context specifically. This will include an account of the development of South African popular music through the twentieth century in relation to the country's politics. Through examining this relationship, the dialogue between historical case studies and theoretical literature will continue, in which existing theories relating to the relationship between music, politics and society will be discussed. This theoretical literature will be made use of in the final section of the paper in order to make sense of The Flames and their role in South African history. The second section of this thesis will focus on the socio-historical context of the city of Durban under apartheid. The author will contextualise the research through a narrative historical retelling of Durban‟s social history, focusing on both political and social public mobilisation and the role of cultural spaces and practices within these his torical moments and their relevant structures. Attention will be paid to the development of segregation and apartheid within Durban specifically, while racial relations will also be fo cused upon. This will provide the reader with the necessary background required in order to meaningfully understand how the band The Flames came into existence, became popular, and whether or not they had any meaningful effect on their historical context. The section on Durban's history will be followed by a brief account of Durban's Coloured community's history, as well as a discussion around Coloured identity more broadly within the South African context. This will be vital to the research due to the fact that the musicians of The Flames were classified as Coloured under apartheid, and such an historical background will be critical to understanding the social, political and economic context of the band. Finally, the thesis will end with the written history of The Flame . This final section will provide an account of The Flames' history in which the band will be made sense of within the context of Durban during apartheid, as well as within the context of South African music, and the globalised context of popular music. By situating the band within these three contexts, we can truly assess both how they were shaped by their contexts, and whether they had any effect on these contexts of which they were a part. In this section those existing theories around the relationship between music, politics and society will be discussed and assessed in order to determine how useful a framework they may be for understanding popular music in certain historical contexts. In this way, the research aims to make a meaningful contribution to the study of music and its socio-political role throughout history, as well as to the broader understanding of Durban's history. Specifically, the role of music in Durban's history is being examined, and the researcher hopes that this work can begin to open up new discussions around the importance of studying music in Durban, and South Africa's history. Additionally, this thesis will open up a new area of research into a band which, until this point, has not been engaged with in the field of music history whatsoever. .

Profitable day-neutral strawberry variety and planting date combination for year-round strawberry fruit production in the Southern Cape

- Description: South Africa’s strawberry production is currently limited to winter and spring production. Strawberry growers have not been able to extend the growing season for year-round strawberry production primarily due to variety- and climatic limitations. Consumers world-wide, however, demand year-round supply of strawberries on their markets. Delayed planting and robust day-neutral varieties may allow growers to extend the marketing season. To investigate the most profitable variety and planting date combination for season extension in the Southern Cape, trials were conducted at Groeneweide Farm, George. Day-neutral strawberry varieties Monterey, San Andreas and Albion were planted at 30-day intervals from April to September for 3 seasons. They were planted in single layer, standard coir grow-bags at a density of 75 000/ha. Analyses of variance (ANOVA) were performed on vegetative growth stages (crown and runner formation), yield (flowering and fruit yield), fruit quality (fruit mass and total soluble solids content) and gross income. The analysis encompassed variety, month and planting month × variety interaction. ‘Monterey’ significantly outperformed ‘San Andreas’ which in turn significantly (p<0.05) outperformed ‘Albion’ for crown number, flower number, yield, fruit size and margin above cost. ‘San Andreas’ produced significantly fewer runners than ‘Monterey’ and ‘Albion’. ‘Albion’ produced significantly higher TSS followed by ‘Monterey’ and ‘San Andreas’. Over all, the three day-neutral varieties had no significant differences in yield within all planting dates. However, August and September planting dates produced significantly more runners, flowers and higher margin above cost, but significantly smaller fruit and lower total soluble solids (TSS). ‘Monterey’ planted in April and May produced the highest margin above cost and brought earliness to the production window. Together with ‘San Andreas’ planted in August, which extended the harvest season and gave similar margin above cost, it is possible to maximise profitability, extend both ends of the harvest season and also minimise hygiene costs associated with weekly runner removal. Since the strawberry price is very responsive, to quantity supplied, an oversupply out of the normal season, may however lead to lower prices affecting gross income.

Optical diamond turning of rapidly solidified aluminium alloy grade - 431

- Description: The high demand for ultraprecision machining systems is increasing day by day. The technology leads to increased productivity and quality manufactured products, with an excellent surface finish. Therefore, these products are in demand in many industrial fields such as space, national defence, the medical industry and other high-tech industries. Single point diamond turning (SPDT) is the core technology of ultraprecision machining, which makes use of single-point crystalline diamond as a cutting tool. This technique is used for machining an extensive selection of complex optical surfaces and other engineering products with a quality surface finish. SPDT can achieve dimensional tolerances in order of 0.01um and surface roughness in order of 1nm. SPDT is not restricted, but mostly applicable, to non-ferrous alloys; due to their reflective properties and microstructure that discourages tool wear. The focus of this study is the development of predictive optimisation models, used to analyse the influence of machining parameters (speed, feed, and depth of cut) on surface roughness. Moreover, the study aims to obtain the optimal machining parameters that would lead to minimum surface roughness during the diamond turning of Rapidly Solidified Aluminium (RSA) 431. In this study, Precitech Nanoform 250 Ultra grind machine was used to perform two experiments on RSA 431. The first machining process, experiment 1, was carried out using pressurized kerosene mist; while experiment 2 was carried out with water as the cutting fluid. In each experiment, machine parameters were varied at intervals and the surface roughness of the workpiece was measured at each variation. The measurements were taken through a contact method using Taylor Hobson PGI Dimension XL surface Profilometer. Acoustic emission (AE) was employed as a precision sensing technique – to optimize the machining quality process and provide indications of the expected surface roughness. The results obtained revealed that better surface roughness can be generated when RSA 431 is diamond-turned using water as a cutting fluid, rather than kerosene mist. Predictive models for surface roughness were developed for each experiment, using response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural networks (ANN). Moreover, RSM was used for optimisation. Time domain features acquired from AE signals, together with the three cutting parameters, were used as input parameters in the ANN design. The results of the predictive models show a close relationship between the predicted values and the experimental values for surface roughness. The developed models have been compared in terms of accuracy and cost of computation - using the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE).

The implementation of BPGs in operating theatre nursing improves patient safety and quality of care and enhances patient outcomes. Although BPGs are crucial, the implementation thereof is not well operationalised in clinical practice, especially in an area such as the operating theatres in public hospitals in the Nelson Mandela Bay Health District(NMHD)in the Eastern Cape Province. The study thus developed strategies that could be used to facilitate the implementation of best practice guidelines in the operating theatres at public hospitals in the NMBHD. Understanding registered nurses’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) with regard to implementing BPGs in the operating theatre is important, as it will assist in the development of strategies to facilitate the implementation of BPGs.The study was conducted in three phases. Phase One comprised of a quantitative approach. Data collection was achieved by means of a self-administered questionnaire which was distributed to registered nurses in the operating theatres of public hospitals in the NMBHD. The purpose of the questionnaire was to establish their knowledge, attitude and practice with regard to best practice guidelines and the implementation thereof. Recommendations made by participants for strategies to facilitate the implementation of BPGs in operating theatres were also explored. Descriptive and inferential statistics were utilised to analyse and describe the data. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the profile of the sample, including the demographic data measures of central tendency, for example the mean and standard deviation (SD) and correlation techniques.Chi²analysis was performed to test for significance of the associations between the registered nurses’ demographic variables and their KAP. Data were categorised into three levels, namely lower (score < quartile 1 i.e. bottom 25%). Middle (quartile1 ≤ score ≤quartile i.e. in the middle 50%) and higher (score > quartile 3 i.e. top 25%).Findings from this research study revealed the limited knowledge, attitude and practice of OT nurses about BPGs. During Phase Two an integrative literature review approach was followed in order to identify the best available evidence with regard to the facilitation of the implementation of best practice guidelines in operating theatres. Lastly, Phase Three: strategies that could be used to facilitate the implementation of best practice guidelines in operating theatres were developed. The researcher developed the conceptual framework using the six elements of Dickoff, James and Weidenbach (1968:422). The conceptual framework informed the development of strategies. The strategies are a synthesis of the conclusions drawn from the research findings (phase one and two) and the conceptualization thereof. The strategies were reviewed by six-panel members. Each panel member was supplied with the format for evaluation of the strategies which was based on the criteria established by Chinn and Kramer (2018:156) the results of which included in chapter 7. The researcher ensured that the data obtained was valid and reliable, necessary to assist the researcher to produce quality research. Ethical considerations were maintained throughout. In general, the results of this thesis indicate that the developed strategies that could be used to facilitate the implementation of best practice guidelines, in operating theatres at public hospitals in the NMBHDare unique and could be implemented in theatres in public hospitals. The researcher succeeded in achieving the purpose for this study, because the strategies which are understandable, clear, simple, applicable and significant to operating theatre unit has been developed for use by operating theatre nurses, to facilitate the implementation of best practice guidelines in operating theatres at public hospitals in the NMBHD.

- Description: Understanding species' vulnerability to climate change requires an integrative ecological approach involving, at minimum, physiology, behaviour, reproductive success, and limitations on dispersal. In this thesis I determined potential negative effects of increasing temperatures on behaviour, reproduction, and ability to disperse in an alpine-restricted bird, the Cape Rockjumper Chaetops frenatus ("Rockjumper"). Here I provide a comprehensive ecological set of data for understanding the link between Rockjumper population declines and warming habitats. I tested whether Rockjumper microsite-use at high temperatures resulted in decreased time spent on important behaviours, such as foraging. I found Rockjumpers made increased use of rock-shade as air temperature increased and so spent less time panting, but birds in rock-shade foraged less. Birds may be constrained to foraging in sun at high temperatures to sustain energy or water requirements, despite risks of high thermal load, or else face lost foraging opportunities by remaining in rock-shade. I determined if adult nest attendance and causes of nest failure were related to high temperatures. I filmed nests over two breeding seasons to examine temperature-effects on adult time in nests, provisioning rate, and resultant nestling daily mass gain. The only temperature effect I found was decreased percent daily change in body mass for older nestlings at hotter temperatures. I also examined causes of nest failure over three breeding seasons in relation to nest concealment and habitat openness by observing failure/success. Nests in more open territories (i.e. early post-fire habitat) had greater success, and the main cause of predation came from Boomslang Dispholydus typus. Importantly, the probability of Boomslang predation increased significantly at hotter temperatures. These findings show there may be direct negative effects of increasing temperatures on reproductive success and population recruitment, and so hotter temperature during the breeding season may be at least partly responsible for observed population declines. Lastly, I examined genetic structure of populations across mountain ranges separated from one another by lowland habitat unsuitable for Rockjumpers. I predicted I would find little evidence for dispersal between mountain ranges separated by unsuitable lowland habitat, but instead found Rockjumpers show little evidence for inbreeding. I also found evidence for a past bottleneck event or founder effect, and little overall genetic diversity (possibly as their specialized niche exerts selective pressure). Low diversity may limit Rockjumpers' ability to adapt to a changing environment. Adult physiological and behavioural thresholds to increasing temperatures are often used to create predictions of climate change effects. My past physiological research and current behavioural research suggest no particularly strong evidence that temperature-related population declines are driven by poor physiological capacity to tolerate heat or negative behaviour trade-offs. Instead, my current research shows that understanding negative effects of increasing temperatures may require a more in-depth approach involving investigation of fine-scale ecological interactions. No single one of my chapters provides the insight necessary for understanding Rockjumper population declines at warming temperatures. Instead, I show how an integrative approach may be necessary for assessing species' vulnerability to climate change by examining multiple ecological aspects of a single sentinel species, using an alpine species with a narrow thermal range and highly specialized habitat niche.

- Description: German Studies students at Rhodes University have normally never studied the German language before enrolling for the first-year course and face the challenge of a fairly rapid linguistic advancement, in a context with very limited exposure to the foreign language outside the classroom. Free writing is an area which students find particularly challenging as it requires students to syndissertatione grammatical and vocabulary knowledge. Furthermore, South African students are often underprepared for the challenges they face at university regarding language, technology and finance, as they try to to assimilate to the academic environment and gain epistemological access to their various subjects, in this case, language acquisition and the attendant modules of translation, literature and cultural studies. The use of technology in teaching and learning, known as blended learning, is said to produce better results than face-to face teaching alone, through creating opportunities for more autonomous student learning. Scholars of instructed second-language acquisition also suggest using technology to improve language instruction. One particular area which is gaining ground is teaching students collocational structures through exploring large language corpora, to improve students’ language competencies such as writing fluency. However, both blended learning practices and corpus-based teaching practices suggested by scholars are often not reported on in a particular teaching and learning context, taking into account factors such as institutional infrastructure, student and staff backgrounds and preparedness, and larger socio-political factors. Thus, it remains unclear how these practices (blended learning and corpus-based teaching of collocations) may be integrated into standard urricula, particularly for languages other than English, which have been severely under-researched. The purpose of this research is to take a context-based approach to language teaching and thereby investigate current blended learning practices for German Studies at Rhodes University in South Africa and explore through an action research approach how to integrate collocational awareness into the curriculum, within the blended learning model. Insights from corpus linguistics guide an adaptation of teaching practice, helping students develop skills to aid with writing fluency, seeking to make the patterned nature of language salient to our students. This is undertaken in a scaffolded way, within the curriculum, making use firstly of the texts to which students are exposed in the textbook (comprehensible input) as a source of collocational examples, and following this by making use of reallife language data from an online German corpus, DWDS. Findings from the study reveal a number of best practices related to the use of blended learning and teaching collocations in context of the German foreign language curriculum at a South African institution of higher education.

One particular area which is gaining ground is teaching students collocational structures through exploring large language corpora, to improve students’ language competencies such as writing fluency. However, both blended learning practices and corpus-based teaching practices suggested by scholars are often not reported on in a particular teaching and learning context, taking into account factors such as institutional infrastructure, student and staff backgrounds and preparedness, and larger socio-political factors. Thus, it remains unclear how these practices (blended learning and corpus-based teaching of collocations) may be integrated into standard urricula, particularly for languages other than English, which have been severely under-researched. The purpose of this research is to take a context-based approach to language teaching and thereby investigate current blended learning practices for German Studies at Rhodes University in South Africa and explore through an action research approach how to integrate collocational awareness into the curriculum, within the blended learning model. Insights from corpus linguistics guide an adaptation of teaching practice, helping students develop skills to aid with writing fluency, seeking to make the patterned nature of language salient to our students. This is undertaken in a scaffolded way, within the curriculum, making use firstly of the texts to which students are exposed in the textbook (comprehensible input) as a source of collocational examples, and following this by making use of reallife language data from an online German corpus, DWDS. Findings from the study reveal a number of best practices related to the use of blended learning and teaching collocations in context of the German foreign language curriculum at a South African institution of higher education.

- Description: This research is aimed at software development companies and highlights the unique information security concerns in the context of a non-malicious software developer’s work environment; and furthermore explores an application driven solution which focuses specifically on providing developer environments with access control for source code repositories. In order to achieve that, five goals were defined as discussed in section 1.3. The application designed to provide the developer environment with access control to source code repositories was modelled on lessons taken from the principles of Network Access Control (NAC), Data Loss Prevention (DLP), and Google’s BeyondCorp (GBC) for zero-trust end-user computing. The intention of this research is to provide software developers with maximum access to source code without compromising Confidentiality, as per the Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability (CIA) triad. Employing data gleaned from examining the characteristics of DLP, NAC, and Beyond- Corp—proof-of-concept code was developed to regulate access to the developer’s environment and source code. The system required sufficient flexibility to support the diversity of software development environments. In order to achieve this, a modular design was selected. The system comprised a client side agent and a plug-in-ready server component. The client side agent mounts and dismounts encrypted volumes containing source code. Furthermore, it provides the server with information of the client that is demanded by plug-ins. The server side service provided encryption keys to facilitate the mounting of the volumes and, through plug-ins, asked questions of the client agent to determine whether access should be granted. The solution was then tested with integration and system testing. There were plans to have it used by development teams who were then to be surveyed as to their view on the proof of concept but this proved impossible. The conclusion provides a basis by which organisations that develop software can better balance the two corners of the CIA triad most often in conflict: Confidentiality in terms of their source code against the Availability of the same to developers.

Critics of this type of religious outreach now known as televangelism have challenged its predominant, if not exclusive focus on miracle and prosperity message. Using the mixed-method research design involving focus group discussions, key informant interviews and a survey of 255 respondents, this study sought to ascertain Lagos audiences‘ perceptions of Pentecostal Television programmes on two satellite stations, Start Times and DSTV. The findings revealed that audience members perceive Pentecostal churches programme as primarily focused on converting the audience members to the Christian faith. The result revealed that miracle sessions are a common feature of televangelism. Respondents see the miracles as manipulations largely intended to woo and often, hoodwink audience members. The findings revealed that although some of the Pentecostal churches‘ programmes dwell more on the word of God compared to the mainline churches, the programmes and teachings, however, often tended to promote the leadership of the church and not the gospel of Christ. Generally, the study indicates the majority of the audience members are aware of and identify with the atrocities the Pentecostal Churches are accused of perpetrating through their TV programmes. The findings revealed poor awareness and knowledge about the role of the Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation (NBC). The results suggest participants do not believe the NBC is living up to its responsibilities. The findings of this study highlight the need for the NBC, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) to work together in formulating new regulations for controlling religious broadcast on television, Pentecostal TV broadcasts, in particular. This is the only way to safeguard vulnerable members of the audience from being manipulated and brainwashed.

The method includes a Social Media Influencer Model that illustrates the relationship between SMIs’ characteristics and techniques for engaging the public, and a Social Media Analytics (SMA) Process model that can guide researchers through the steps of eliciting worldviews from the public. Although there are several SMA techniques that can be used, the proposed method uses sentiment analysis as an SMA technique for deriving sentiments from social media data. The method was evaluated by researchers who require a social media method for eliciting millennials worldviews.
