A study to analyse the organisational wellness present in a Port Elizabeth-based pharmaceutical company with the intent of developing and implementing an organisational wellness programme

- Description: South African employees have found a wide range of stressors prevalent in their working experience. The impact of these stressors on the lives of the employees adversely affects the organisational effectiveness of any organisation. The 21st century business world has become more stressful and risky because of the daily workplace demands, coupled with internal competitive challenges, placed on employees. The effect of this stress on employees is seen in an increase in absenteeism, a loss in employee productivity, increased insurance premiums, reduced workforce efficiency and an increase in training and employment costs. As a result, organisations are compelled to commit their management team to ensuring their employees health and wellness. This can be achieved through the implementation of a structured wellness programme or policy. This study's intention, forming the main problem, was to determine the wellness programmes that would be required by the pharmaceutical company, Bodene (Pty) Ltd, in order to enhance, maintain and develop its organisational wellness. This resulted in the development of a wellness programme. The approach taken to resolve this problem began with an intensive literature survey to determine the critical wellness factors that literature indicated as necessary for employees to be successful and happy in their work environments and outside of them. This was followed by an empirical study undertaken within the Small Volume Parenteral department of the organisation. The study was undertaken by the administration of a structured employee questionnaire to blue collar workers and a select number of middle managers in order to determine the level of wellness present amongst the employees. In addition, a structured management questionnaire was administered to the Sister-on-site and the Industrial Relations manager in order to determine whether any wellness programmes currently existed within the organisation, the extent to which they had been implemented, the extent to which they are successful within the organisation and the role, if any, that management play in actively promoting employee wellness. Among the main findings, on the negative side, the study revealed that employees within the department are close-lipped when it comes to revealing information of a personal nature. This has resulted in a difficulty in assessing their sexual and financial wellness, in particular. With regards to management, findings revealed that the employees felt that there is not enough trust between the employee and management. It was also indicated that management is not as open as possible with the employees. In addition, employees indicated that they felt that there was a lack of communication among team members as well as various forms of discrimination existing in the organisation. On the positive side, the study has indicated that a respect for all cultures exists within the organisation. It has also indicated that a minimal amount of conflict is experienced between superiors and subordinates and that the majority of employees feel a sense of belonging within the organisation. Findings from the literature survey undertaken and the empirical study done within the organisation were integrated and a coherent organisational wellness programme was developed. The organisational wellness programme has been recommended to the management of Bodene (Pty) Ltd. If the programme is considered viable, it will be implemented within the organisation.

Information was gathered from the managers who rated their leadership styles as they perceived it; and from their respective subordinates who rated the managers’ leadership style as they perceived it and also their satisfaction as employees as they perceived it. Data obtained from each instrument, for the respective managers, was then statistically analysed. The reliability of the data could not be proved for some of the factors of the 2 research instruments. However, this research found a statistically significant relationship between transformational leadership and some factors of employee satisfaction, albeit a weak relationship. The null hypothesis was rejected and the alternate hypothesis accepted. A statistically significant relationship exists between leadership style and employee satisfaction levels within an automotive manufacturing organisation.

A non-probability purposive sampling method was applied, and a longitudinal profile was generated as participants were assessed twice. Participants were all outpatients at Kwazakhele Day Clinic, Dora Nginza and Livingstone Hospitals in the Nelson Mandela Metropole, and were located for the study through their caregiver’s attendance of an HIV support groups at the Dora Nginza Hospital. Data was analysed statistically using descriptive statistics and Hotelings-T² tests. Results indicated a significant difference between first and second assessment on the General Quotient and on two of the six subscales, namely Eye-Hand Co-ordination (D) and Practical Reasoning (F). It was deduced that development declined or did not improve as participants aged.

- Description: Using notions of change developed by Thomas Kuhn, the thesis argues that the rise of globalisation and the end of the Cold War presented the Westphalian or state-centric paradigm of international relations with a Kuhnian paradigm “crisis”. As a result, both the theory and the practice of international relations are in the midst of (what Kuhn calls) a “paradigm shift”. Emerging from this shift is (what is described in this work as) “Access World” and “Denial World” – a particular global configuration of the practice of international relations. Kuhn’s idea of “incommensurability” seems to typify the relationship between the two components of this bifurcated configuration of the international. Both intellectual risk-taking and political courage are required if the ontological struggle raging between “Access World” and “Denial World” is to be settled. This will pave the way for a new paradigm to emerge. Kuhn provides us with the insight that, to achieve this ontological breakthrough, a fundamental change in our vision of the discipline of International Relations, but also of the world of everyday international relations, is required. This entails recasting the study of International Relations as an emancipatory project and by recognising the centrality of human beings in the practice of international relations. Only if this is done, will we be able to arrive at a cosmopolitan political bargain that is appropriate for the 21st century.

They then had to consider these same questions in the light of a participatory on-course teaching and learning activity. Through this, the paper trials a reflexive approach to the teaching of learning theory in environmental education.

- Description: Adjacent binaphthalo-phthalocyanines tetra-substituted with phenoxy (4a), 4-carboxyphenoxy (4b) and 4-t-butylphenoxy (4c) groups, as well as the di-substituted 4-carboxyphenoxy (5b) have been synthesized and characterized. The photophysical and photochemical behavior of 4a-c, were compared with those of the corresponding di-substituted derivatives, (5a-c). The secondary substituents on the phenoxy ring have an influence on the aggregation of the molecules and hence on their photophysical properties. All of the complexes exhibit a relatively good conversion of energy from the triplet-excited state to the singlet oxygen. The less aggregated molecule (4c), has the highest singlet oxygen quantum yield. For all the molecules, fluorescence yields are low and they all have relatively shorter triplet lifetimes compared with the unsubstituted zinc phthalocyanine. Increasing the number of ring substituents on these rigid MPc complexes (from complexes 5 to 4) showed a general increase in the triplet state lifetimes and singlet oxygen quantum yields, and a decrease in stability.

- Description: Spectral properties of a water soluble metal free tetracarboxyphenoxy bisnaphthalo-phthalocyanine (3) were studied in water and organic solvents. It was found that in protic solvents, complex 3 was highly aggregated. The surfactant, Triton X100, and bovineserum albumin (BSA) do not effect disaggregation while cetyl trimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) caused the molecule to disaggregate. The fluorescence quantum yields were higher in the presence of CTAC. Studying the interaction of BSA with complex 3 using fluorometry revealed that BSA is highly quenched by the latter. A 1:1 stoichiometric binding ratio between BSA and the Pc was found. Triplet quantum yields in water containing CTAC were higher than in organic solvents.

The fluorescence quantum yields were higher in the presence of CTAC. Studying the interaction of BSA with complex 3 using fluorometry revealed that BSA is highly quenched by the latter. A 1:1 stoichiometric binding ratio between BSA and the Pc was found. Triplet quantum yields in water containing CTAC were higher than in organic solvents.

This paper presents empirical results of a study in the Sand River catchment, assessing the benefits and costs accruing to owners and non-owners for both cattle and goats within a livelihoods analysis framework. Results indicate that cattle are used for a greater variety of goods and services than are goats. The savings value represented the most important function, followed by milk and then manure. Even if savings value was excluded, cattle ownership made a significant contribution to local livelihoods. Goats also provided a net positive benefit, represented largely by the savings value, followed by meat and cash sales. Non-owners also benefited through donations of manure, milk, draught and meat for free, or at a cheaper rate than alternatives. The majority of non-owners aspired to livestock ownership, although the risk of theft of animals was of growing concern. Averaged across the whole catchment, the net value of goods and services from livestock was just over R400 per hectare, with an annual return to capital of 36%. Cattle contributed the bulk of the value by virtue of their greater numbers and larger size, but on a per kilogramme basis goats provided higher value. - Description: This portfolio discusses various important aspects that affect teacher education. The portfolio has become an important tool for assessment in education. The research component of the masters' course that I attended is reflected in this portfolio. To complete this course several aspects were covered. The educational reform process in the Namibian context requires the use of appropriate resources, an environment conducive to learning, active involvement of the learners and teachers who should have a better understanding of the system adopted. Teacher educators are seen as important in transforming Namibian education in the sense of breaking the cycle of authoritarianism and inequities that existed in schooling prior to independence in 1990, and that still continue to exist in many Namibian schools today. Much effort has been devoted to creating conditions in colleges of education, where future teachers experience the same kind of teaching and learning that is envisioned for schools in the country. To accomplish this a great deal of effort has been devoted to the professional development of teacher educators. This masters' course was initiated to address the shortcomings of teacher education in Namibia. The preparation of teacher educators to be willing and able to prepare teachers in a manner that is consistent with national educational goals has been a neglected element of educational reform in Third World countries (Taylor and Peacock, 1997). Nahas Angula defines teachers as critical agents in creating the reform in relation to several broad principals: access, equity, quality, and democracy. As Ebbutt and Elliot (1998) point out, these principles are defined in very broad terms and provide the opportunity for teachers, teacher educators, and administrators to translate the ideals in particular contexts through practical reflection and deliberation. The Namibian reforms are underpinned by democratic ideals, the intention being to develop broad participation in defining and developing the reform tenets in specific contexts. In Namibia it has been recognized that qualitative changes in classroom practice will only occur when teachers understand them and accept them as their own. It is also recognized that because many teachers have been educated under the authoritarian system of the past, conceptual changes are needed in the minds of the teachers for the reforms to be successful. These include a shift from the belief of teachers as civil servants who are merely to "deliver" a curriculum dictated from above, to one of teachers as reflective professionals who play important roles in interpreting and defining the reforms and in giving meaning to such values as learner-centered and democratic education, continuous assessment, and critical inquiry (Swarts 1998). In the case of Namibia, we have a situation where there is an attempt to fundamentally transform an authoritarian education system that emphasized repetition and rote learning of received knowledge to one where learners are active participants in the learning process and where the curriculum is relevant to and respectful of different cultural traditions and communities. The learner-centered philosophy that guides post-independence educational reforms in Namibia calls for breaking down the authoritarian teacher-student relationships of the past. It encourages teachers to begin instruction by gaining an understanding of their learners' existing knowledge, skills, and understandings and to actively involve them in the learning process toward the goal of preparing citizens for a democratic society. The background above will help the readers to understand the sections covered in this portfolio. In the first part, the portfolio looks at a case study that analyses pre- and post-independence teacher education in Namibia. This study focuses on the Rundu College of Education and investigates the implementation of the Basic Education Teacher Diploma (BETD) Broad Curriculum in relation to the History syllabus. This paper presents information on what led to post-independence teacher education reforms in Namibia and why the reform was necessary. The BETD Broad Curriculum advocates the principles underpinning teacher education reforms in Namibia. The analysis looks at whether the History syllabus applies the principles of teacher education reform in relation to practice in the classroom. This paper addresses the historical background of a History curriculum, which shows the importance of a contextual understanding of the theoretical framework. The second paper looks at the theories underpinning the pre- and post-independence curriculum and the reform process in Namibia, how each theory views knowledge and why a decision was taken to apply them. The third paper is a literature review that links the epistemological ideals of reform to the classroom situation. This paper provides the basis for a small-scale empirical research. The research proposal included in the portfolio emerged from the earlier studies and identifies a key area for investigation within the domain of my particular area of teaching. The identified research problem investigated is presented in the final paper of the portfolio. These research findings can be applied to different situations in different schools. The portfolio is completed by the presentation of a short reflection of the role of the portfolio in this masters' course.

It is a semi-continuous breeder and despite producing small numbers of large eggs, infestation by this animal has reached epidemic proportions on local abalone farms. The present study compared the morphometrics and reproductive characteristics of worms from farmed and wild abalone, in the Walker Bay area of the south Western Cape Province of South Africa, to gain insights into why this animal has become so successful under aquaculture conditions. The farms designated farm A and farm B each had one on-farm site, and two wild sites, while farm C had two on-farm sites and two wild sites. The wild sites were natural abalone habitats located within 2.5 km of the farms. Our results conclusively showed that environmental conditions prevalent on the farms enhanced the reproductive success of these worms relative to that observed in its natural environment. At farms B and C, worms occurred in significantly higher densities at the on-farm sites than in the corresponding wild samples, but at farm A, density was equally low at the three sites. At all three farms, a greater proportion of the population was reproductively active in the on-farm samples than in the wild samples. Worms on farmed abalone had a higher instantaneous fecundity, brooded more clutches simultaneously and were larger than their conspecifics from the wild. There was a positive correlation between adult size and brood size and the number of clutches brooded simultaneously. Within the three on-farm sites there was a negative correlation between egg volume and brood size, indicating a trade-off between these traits. However, such a trade-off was not apparent between sites, with brood size being higher at the on-farm sites than at the wild sites, irrespective of egg size. This suggests that the stable nutrient-enriched environment on the farm led to an increase in fecundity without compromising the size (and implicitly the quality) of the eggs. Worm density did not have a significant effect on body size or any other reproductive traits at most sites, and the density of T. heterouncinata was unaffected by the density of other shell-infesting polychaetes. The results suggest that the farm environment has selected for larger, more fecund worms that breed rapidly with high recruitment success as a consequence of abundant nutrients, high host density, habitat stability and a possible lack of predation and interspecific competition.

- Description: Terebrasabella heterouncinata is a small K-selected sabellid polychaete. It is a simultaneous hermaphrodite with a semi-continuous mode of reproduction, producing relatively few large eggs that are brooded within the parental burrow until the larvae emerge, to settle on the growing edge of the abalone shell. Despite its low fecundity, this worm has become problematic on abalone farms in South Africa. The present study was conducted to gain an understanding of the life history patterns of T. helerouncinata to determine how they contributed to the success of these worms under altered conditions. This study demonstrated that conditions prevalent on abalone farms were conducive to enhancing the reproductive success of this worm, and suggests that larger, more fecund worms may have been selected for in the decade that these worms have been present on the farms. Increased nutrient availability, and possibly the increased stability of the farm environment relative to its natural environment, has led to a 1.5-fold increase in the average size of the worms. Body size was found to be positively correlated with brood size, and this resulted in worms on farms brooding 3 to 4.5 times more offspring at a time than worms from wild abalone. The ability to increase the number of eggs produced at a time may have been limited by the fact that these worms have only two ovaries. Thus, the increase in fecundity may have been related primarily to the increase in the rate at which the eggs were laid by the worms on the farms, and the increase in the coelomic space available for the storage of these rapidly developing eggs. The ability to increase the rate at which oocytes develop may be related to the vitellogenic mechanisms employed by these worms. Vitellogenic oocytes are able to incorporate high molecular weight yolk precursors from the surrounding coelomic fluid through endocytotic activity. This may allow the oocytes to increase the rate at which they incorporate yolk material under conditions of nutrient enrichment. The increase in fecundity did not occur at the expense of offspring size and, presumably, quality. The increased reproductive output on the farms was compounded by a proportionate increase in the number of reproducing worms within the population. In addition, these worms are long-lived (worms from farmed abalone reached a maximum age of approximately 40 months) and exhibit negligible senescence. Thus, their reproductive output did not change significantly with an increase in age. Furthermore, the proportion of the reproductive worms did not decrease with an increase in age. Thus, within the age range tested, worms of all ages have the potential to make equal contributions to population growth. While diet and abalone stocking density could not be identified as having a significant effect on reproductive output and infestation rate under intensive culture conditions, it was demonstrated that in a naïve abalone population, the total intensity of infestation increased exponentially with time. This increase may be a consequence of an increase in fertilisation success. These worms continuously produce entaquasperm that are released into the water column. The sperm are collected by other individuals that then store the sperm in a single spermatheca. The ability to store sperm relieves individuals of a dependence on the synchronisation of spawning of eggs and sperm. - Description: Terebrasabella heterouncinata is a small K-selected sabellid polychaete. It is a simultaneous hermaphrodite with a semi-continuous mode of reproduction, producing relatively few large eggs that are brooded within the parental burrow until the larvae emerge, to settle on the growing edge of the abalone shell. Despite its low fecundity, this worm has become problematic on abalone farms in South Africa. The present study was conducted to gain an understanding of the life history patterns of T. helerouncinata to determine how they contributed to the success of these worms under altered conditions. This study demonstrated that conditions prevalent on abalone farms were conducive to enhancing the reproductive success of this worm, and suggests that larger, more fecund worms may have been selected for in the decade that these worms have been present on the farms. Increased nutrient availability, and possibly the increased stability of the farm environment relative to its natural environment, has led to a 1.5-fold increase in the average size of the worms. Body size was found to be positively correlated with brood size, and this resulted in worms on farms brooding 3 to 4.5 times more offspring at a time than worms from wild abalone. The ability to increase the number of eggs produced at a time may have been limited by the fact that these worms have only two ovaries. Thus, the increase in fecundity may have been related primarily to the increase in the rate at which the eggs were laid by the worms on the farms, and the increase in the coelomic space available for the storage of these rapidly developing eggs. The ability to increase the rate at which oocytes develop may be related to the vitellogenic mechanisms employed by these worms. Vitellogenic oocytes are able to incorporate high molecular weight yolk precursors from the surrounding coelomic fluid through endocytotic activity. This may allow the oocytes to increase the rate at which they incorporate yolk material under conditions of nutrient enrichment. The increase in fecundity did not occur at the expense of offspring size and, presumably, quality. The increased reproductive output on the farms was compounded by a proportionate increase in the number of reproducing worms within the population. In addition, these worms are long-lived (worms from farmed abalone reached a maximum age of approximately 40 months) and exhibit negligible senescence. Thus, their reproductive output did not change significantly with an increase in age. Furthermore, the proportion of the reproductive worms did not decrease with an increase in age. Thus, within the age range tested, worms of all ages have the potential to make equal contributions to population growth. While diet and abalone stocking density could not be identified as having a significant effect on reproductive output and infestation rate under intensive culture conditions, it was demonstrated that in a naïve abalone population, the total intensity of infestation increased exponentially with time. This increase may be a consequence of an increase in fertilisation success. These worms continuously produce entaquasperm that are released into the water column. The sperm are collected by other individuals that then store the sperm in a single spermatheca. The ability to store sperm relieves individuals of a dependence on the synchronisation of spawning of eggs and sperm. The findings of the study showed that many of the grade 11 learners were under-prepared for the study of more sophisticated geometry concepts and proofs. Three categories of reasons could be ascribed to this: Firstly, there was insufficient preparation of learners during the primary and senior phases. Secondly the study indicated that there is overload of geometry at the high school level in the South African mathematics curriculum. Thirdly, the over-reliance on the traditional approach to teaching geometry, poor presentation of mathematical technical concepts and language problems, were identified as possible additional reasons for the poor learner understanding of geometry in general and circle geometry in particular. The study recommends that the structure of the South African geometry curriculum should be revisited and redesigned. Teachers should be empowered and developed to be more effective in teaching geometry through further studies in mathematics and in-service workshops. They should also be engaged in the process of implementing the van Hiele's theory in the teaching of geometry in their classrooms.

- Description: South Africa is an arid country and its growing population is putting freshwater resources under increasing pressure. Natural salinization of freshwater systems is being exacerbated by anthropogenic influences. The National Water Act (No. 36 of 1998) stipulates the need for an ecological Reserve, that quantity and quality of freshwater needed to protect freshwater ecosystems while allowing sustainable use of freshwater resources. Water guidelines do exist in the form of the South African Water Quality Guidelines (DWAF, 1996) and more recently, Jooste and Rossouw (2002) compiled benchmark values for water quality variables marking the boundaries between ecological health classes in the 4-category classification system. Predominantly international toxicity data were used to compile the guidelines and the benchmark values. In addition, there is a paucity of chronic toxicity data nationally and internationally. This thesis showed that it is statistically possible to derive protective chronic endpoints for salinity from acute toxicity data through extrapolation. The Acute to Chronic Ratio (ACR), Two-Step Linear Regression (LRA) and Multi-Factor Probit Analysis (MPA) extrapolation methods were investigated to derive chronic toxicity data from acute toxicity data. The authors of LRA and MPA recommend associating a time independent LCx value in the range of LC₀¸₀₁ to LC₁₀ with a Predicted No Effect Concentration (PNOEC). In addition to published methods, this thesis studied the possibility of equating a time independent LC₅₀ value and subjected to a safety factor of 5 (LRA LC₅₀/5), to the PNOEC. Extrapolated chronic toxicity data where the toxicants are NaCl and Na₂SO₄ were derived for indigenous South African macroinvertebrates. NaCl and Na₂SO₄ are salts associated with salinisation in South Africa. In addition, a chronic salinity toxicity test protocol for an indigenous South African aquatic macroinvertebrate was designed and chronic toxicity test were performed using NaCl and Na₂SO₄ as toxicants. The experimental chronic toxicity data produced were used to validate results from the acute to chronic extrapolation methods. Extrapolated chronic toxicity data were inputted into Species Sensitivity Distribution curves, and concentrations that were predicted to protect 95 % of species (PC95) were compared to the sub-lethality benchmarks proposed by Jooste and Rossouw (2002) for NaCl and Na₂SO₄. This study concluded that the LRA LC₅₀/5 extrapolation method is the most protective and accurate and proposed that LRA replace the ACR method in future guideline development for inorganic salts.

It also consists of a variety of coloured components adding to the complex composition of this wastewater. Disposal of this wastewater into water courses is not recommended and yet is performed all over the world. Investigation of this wastewater found that there was a high concentration of sulphate which, in the presence of sulphate-reducing prokaryotes can cause sulphide corrosion of cement. The concentration of sulphate in the wastewater was approximately 2770 mg/L. It was also found that the wastewater pH was very low and discharge of the wastewater into the wastewater treatment works caused a negative impact on the overall quality of the final wastewater discharged to sea. It was found using FISH techniques that there were no sulphate-reducing prokaryotes present in the wastewaters but that a sulphate-reducing population existed on the sewer wall. An anaerobic contact process was designed to treat this wastewater targeting sulphate reduction to sulphide, to be converted into elemental sulphur and to increase the wastewater pH. The process did not achieve this aim and only approximately 20-30 % reduction in sulphate from the wastewater was achieved with little to no change in the pH. A 95 % reduction in sulphate concentration was needed in order to reach acceptable discharge limits. Sulphate reduction could not be carried out, even under ideal laboratory conditions. It was found that the barrier causing the digester failure was the high concentration of phenols present in the wastewater (3.3 g/L) together with the production of high concentrations of volatile fatty acids (on average 13 g acetic/L). These two components are known to cause digester failure, especially phenols, and phenols are usually only degraded by fungal species. It was concluded that the wastewater itself was not amenable to this method of biological treatment.

- Description: The aim of this thesis was to explore the experience of “self” within the clinical context of adult survivors of childhood trauma. Childhood trauma in this study referred to a range of childhood experiences of emotional and physical assault, including encounters with various kinds of abuse and neglect. The focus was on the experience of a sense of disintegration and dislocation, associated to aspects of self being in conflict. This was explored from theoretical perspectives of Jungian analytic psychology, as well as art therapy.Answers were sought to the questions of how claywork, as a form of art therapy, may facilitate the integration of the self and contribute to the development of a healing dialogue with feared and hated aspects of self. Grounded in Jungian theory, integration of the self was conceptualised as a movement towards “differentiating wholeness”. The study took the form of a phenomenological-hermeneutic case study. One participant’s experience of making and discussing a clay sculpture in a therapeutic setting according to Edwards’ method, was analysed thematically. It was concluded that the potential of claywork in therapy to facilitate the integration of the self is related to three aspects. Firstly, claywork in therapy may promote a concrete personification of feared and hated aspects of self, which may enable the maker to view these aspects from a distance, and learn to understand them in a new way. Secondly, claywork in therapy may facilitate the safe ‘unearthing’ of repressed feelings as well as hidden aspects of the personality. Thirdly, claywork’s potential to mediate symbolic functioning was shown to be an important aspect of the integration process. These findings confirmed and extended existing theory regarding the usefulness of claywork in psychotherapy with adult survivors of childhood trauma. Brief recommendations for future research were provided.

However, 55% of SA students, compared to 47% of foreign students, have sources of earned income, usually related to the university. Monthly income also tended to be higher for SA students (R654) than for other groups (Other Africa = R557; RoW = R575). The general conclusion that can be drawn is that there is very little difference in total spending between groups, although SA students have a somewhat higher average than others. A straight line ordinary least squares regression showed that, holding all else constant, SA students spent on average R169 more per month than foreign students (significant at the 10% level).

Monthly income also tended to be higher for SA students (R654) than for other groups (Other Africa = R557; RoW = R575). The general conclusion that can be drawn is that there is very little difference in total spending between groups, although SA students have a somewhat higher average than others. A straight line ordinary least squares regression showed that, holding all else constant, SA students spent on average R169 more per month than foreign students (significant at the 10% level).
