- Description: Organizational citizenship behaviour is one of the important factors that enhance organizational effectiveness. The main purpose of this study was to explore the impact of Organizational commitment on Organizational Citizenship Behaviour (OCB). In this study, age and gender effects on OCB of tertiary institution employees were also examined. The data was collected from 68 academic and administration staff from the University of Fort Hare, Alice campus through questionnaires. The results show that 68 respondents are of the view that organizational commitment impacts positively in enhancing the organizational citizenship behaviour of the employees. The findings also reveal that age and gender play no role in the practice of employees OCB. Management can increase the levels of OCB in their employees by recognizing employees who engage themselves in such behaviour. - Description: The purpose of my research is to diagnose the organizational culture of the National Institute for Educational Development [NIED] , in particular to determine whether it is conducive to innovation, as was envisaged at the time of its inception. The diagnosis of NIED's organizational culture was done by using a hybrid qualitative and quantitative case study. A questionnaire, the Cameron and Quinn's Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument [OCAI], was given to all professional members at NIED, while six members of the NIED organization were interviewed. It emerged from the data, first, that the characteristics of the dominant NIED culture, using Cameron and Quinn's six dimensions of culture that produced an "overall culture profile" of NIED, are not likely to enhance innovativeness. Nevertheless, there is a strong preference towards a culture type favourable to innovation. Second, there are cultural factors antithetical to an innovative organizational culture. These include poor information flow and a lack of communication, negligible crossfunction interaction and freedom, and constraining hierarchical and bureaucratic structures. Third, NIED has, in the form of a "green paper," a set of critical norms, values and assumptions that characterize the culture of innovative organizations. Finally, there is evidence of the presence of cultural characteristics conducive to an innovative organizational culture. These include: learning how to learn; being pro-active in initiating change and innovativeness; and sustaining momentum, consistency and perseverance. The discrepancy between the existing organizational culture and the preferred organizational culture revealed by the overall cultural profile can be explained by the fact that the norms, values and assumptions that characterize the culture of innovative organizations and the cultural characteristics conducive to an innovative organizational culture are not fully infused into the whole organization. There is a tension between NIED's bureaucratic nature and its innovative mission. Organizational culture change, where NIED's structures and processes are aligned with its espoused vision and mission, is needed in order for it to be better placed to achieve its original pioneering mandate.

These manifest themselves in stressful working conditions and long working hours, labour intensive jobs, reduced job security due to job losses and short-term projects, and the feeble health and safety (H&S) standards. Together with a variety of socio-economic and political issues, these challenges form a perceived and broad organisational culture of this industry, which impacts on the industry‟s productivity. As construction management efforts in the development of the human resources base increase, the industry recognises that work-life balance is an important and critical issue in the 21st century. Construction management is a discipline that embodies two interdependent dimensions; the management of the business of construction and the management of projects. Of the latter, the key principles thereof are, as part of a management strategy, planning, organizing, leading, controlling and coordinating projects. To achieve these strategic components, an effective human resource base is required. Work-life balance is therefore a management issue and organizational culture sets a backdrop from which it can be understood. This study focused on the status of the organisational culture of the production establishments that form part of the construction industry and the manner in which it manifests on the work-life balance of the workers. Furthermore, the correlation between work-life balance and individual work performance was examined. An exploratory research approach was adopted and the research technique followed an interview protocol. The main findings demonstrate that the South African construction industry is predominantly a clan culture with minor characteristics of the hierarchy, adhocracy and market cultures. Furthermore, work-life balance is difficult to attain and it influences individual work performance. The main conclusion is that organizational culture in construction firms is imbalanced. Thus, the main recommendation is that the industry adopts a balanced organizational culture and modern human resource practices.

- Description: The increasing scarcity of fresh and clean water in many places around the world is a major concern. Water is a basic need that must be availed to humans, plants and animals at any given time. It is a requirement that each human on earth should get between 20-50 L of fresh, clean and pure water a day. It is very difficult to keep up with this need due to drastic increase in global pollution by emerging contaminants. The increase is due to human activities, modern way of life, industrialization and improper disposal of materials that contain these OPFRs. Organophosphate flame retardants OPFRs are the organic pollutants considered in this study. OPFRs are semi volatile compounds SVOCs that are used in many industries as flame retardants and additives. They were developed because of environmental and health concerns of previously used brominated and chlorinated flame retardants FRs. They show acute toxicity and exhibit adverse effects such as neurotoxicity, they are also carcinogenic to humans and animals. In recent years, some researchers have started investigating the occurrence and distribution of OPFRs in South African rivers. The aim of this study was to identify signatures of OPFRs in the aquatic environment of Buffalo River Estuary, and soil from a nearby dumpsite: and to develop a method for their removal using modified cyclodextrins. In this study, the concentration of OPFRs were investigated in sediments and soil samples collected from Buffalo River Estuary. This estuary is located close to a major port in East London city in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Collection of samples was done across two seasons i.e. winter and spring. OPFRs in sediment and soil samples in this study were extracted using ultrasonic extraction method. Solid-phase extraction SPE was employed for the cleanup of the extracts, in order to reduce potential matrix interference and also for sample purification. The congeners of interest in this study were Tris 2-Choroethyl phosphate TCEP and Tris 1,3-Dicloro-2-propyl phosphate (TDCP). Samples were air dried immediately on arrival at the laboratory after being stored in an ice chest at 4 ℃ and further processed for further analysis.The concentrations of OPFRs were determined using GC-μECD (gas chromatograph coupled with micro electron capture detector) from soil and sediments in that area and they were found high in winter compared to spring owing to high level of discharge of industrial and domestic waste into the aquatic system and also the nearby dumpsite. The total concentrationof OPFRs Ʃ 2OPFRs for sediments and soil for both seasons was 39935±7619 μg/g and 10376±601 μg/g, respectively. The dominant congener in the Buffalo River Estuary was TCEP. The ecological risk assessment was estimated for the study area, and TCEP moderate risk while TDCP presented low risk. From this study, it could be inferred that the Buffalo River Estuary and the nearby dumpsite in East London are polluted by emerging pollutants i.e. OPFRs. Hence, strict control measures should be put in place to monitor all activities contributing to such magnitude of pollution in the estuary, which is of great economic value to the country. Furthermore in this study, an insoluble and hydrophilic polymer EDTA-Cysteine-β-Cyclodextrin was prepared and synthesized for the remediation of OPFRs in soil and sediments.
