- Description: In South Africa at present there are 104 Industrial Councils. However, the one for the Iron, Steel, Engineering and Metallurgical Industries is the largest and most important covering nearly 500 000 workers. But only about 100 000 of these workers belong to trade unions. At the Industrial Council the employers and trade unions negotiate an agreement that covers all 500 000 workers. At present on the union side there are 14 trade unions - M A W U will make it 15. But most of these unions are racial unions and what are called craft unions - that is their members only do certain kinds of jobs e.g. boilermakers or electricians etc. On the employer side nearly all the 8400 factories in the industry are members of the employer association SEIFSA. It is SEIFSA - which is the largest and most powerful employer association in South Africa - that negotiates for employers on the Industrial Council.

- Description: This thesis is an investigation of the part played by Theopolis Mission on the Frontier, in the community (both secular and religious)and in the context of race relations. The Journal itself provides the terse, sometimes angry core of commentary on the total situation, and an attempt has been made, by setting it in a broader context, to dispel some of the myths which persist about the role of the Christian missionary, about Khoi Missions (in sharp contast to Xhosa Missions) and about Dr John Phllip. A clear picture has emerged of a people whose life-style, antecedents and history have been inadequately researched in tne period subsequent to 1800.

The autecology of Azolla filiculoides Lamarck with special reference to its occurrence in the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam catchment area

- Description: An autecological study of the heterosporous fern Azolla filiculoides Lamarck and its endosymbiotic blue-green alga Anabaena azollae Strasburger, based on a combination of field and laboratory studies, is presented. The taxonomy, morphology and anatomy of the fern-alga association were studied as well as nutritional and physiological aspects of the symbiosis. These studies have defined the habitat and nutritional requirements of the fern and have provided new insights into its reproductive biology, nitrogen metabolism and the nature of the association between the fern and alga. In the catchment area of the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam the availability of suitably sheltered habitat limits the distribution of A. filiculoides while the availability of nutrients, in particular calcium, phosphorus and iron, limits the growth of the fern. The multilayered mats formed by A. filiculoides are essential for spore production, cause dramatic changes in the hydrochemistry of the underlying waters and confer a great competitive advantage on the plant. Methods for the isolation of the fern and algal components of the symbiosis have been developed but recombination of the individual organisms to reform the symbiosis was unsuccessful. The development of the fern is closely linked to that of the alga and the association is maintained throughout the life cycle of the fern. Because of its specific habitat and nutritional requirements, A. filiculoides is unlikely to colonize the open waters of the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam.

Geology of the central and southern domains of the Koras Group, northern Cape Province

- Description: The Central and Southern Domains of the Koras Group, situated on the Doornberg Lineament, are the structurally preserved remnants of a once more widespread late-syntectonic cover sequence. Detailed examination of the field relationships, lithology and petrography together with new geochemical data (30 analyses) has resulted in the proposal of a new geological succession consisting mainly of two cycles of bimodal basaltic-rhyolitic volcanics with interbedded, immature conglomerates and lithic greywackes. These two cycles, named the Boomrivier and Leeudraai Formations, are overlain by the immature, polymictic orthoconglomerates and red arkosic sandstones of the Kalkpunt Formation. The first volcanic cycle commenced with the Lambrechtsdrif basaltic andesites and was followed, after a short hiatus, by the Swartkopsleegte rhyodacites. The second cycle comprises the Rouxville basalts and basaltic andesites and the Swartkop and Kenilworth rhyolites. Field evidence suggests that eruption of the rhyolitic and basaltic volcanics in the second cycle was contemporaneous. Geochemically, the volcanics can be classified as an "average-K" to high-K, tholeiitic, subalkaline association which exhibits general similarities to other Southern African bimodal associations e.g., the tholeiitic lavas of the Wilgenhoutsdrif Group. The Koras Group is petrologically similar to the Sinclair Sequence which is presently considered to be its coeval equivalent, but the dominantly calc-alkaline character of the Sinclair rocks distinguishes them from the dominantly tholeiitic Koras lavas. In a short literature review, the four main hypotheses for the petrogenesis of bimodal associations: liquid immiscibility, crystal fractionation, two-stage partial melting and separate magma sources, are described and the most feasible explanation for the origin of the Koras lavas is thought to be a "separate magma source" hypothesis in which two cycles of mantle-derived basalts and crustal-derived rhyolites were produced in a zone of high heat flow and erupted in an area of crustal weakness. The middle- or late-Proterozoic Koras Group was formed during unstable tectonic conditions, in a depositional setting that was probably controlled by late folding of the underlying pre-Koras sequences as well as the major strike-slip movement and subordinate dip-slip faulting in the Doornberg Lineament.

The significance of unconformities in the development of Witwatersrand gold and uranium placers

- Description: Most of the economic gold and uranium placers are developed on low angle disconformities in the Central Rand Group and concentrations of gold and uranium are usually at their optimum on unconformity surfaces. Examples include the Kimberley Reef and South Reef of the East Rand, the Main Reef Leader of the Central Rand, the Carbon Leader of the Carletonville goldfield, the Vaal Reef of the Klerksdorp goldfield and the Basal/Steyn placers of the Welkom goldfield. The individual goldfields represent fluvial fans which are composed of a large number of tectonogenetic sedimentary packages separated by unconformities. The tectonic responses between cycles of sedimentation produced unconformities and tectonically controlled cyclic sedimentation is one of the key factors culminating in the preparation and deposition of auriferous placers within the Witwatersrand succession. Unconformities, which represent breaks in sedimentation, result in the preconditioning of palaeosurfaces and redistribution of sediments and heavy minerals on them. Winnowing of sands produced heavy mineral residual accumulations on erosion surfaces which were generally preserved by small-pebble lags or algal mats. Reworking of units truncated by the unconformities provided additional gold, uranium and heavy minerals to unconformity surfaces.

A price analysis of vegetables on the East London municipal market
- Authors: Fraser, Gavin Cecil Gilbert
- Date: 1983
- Subjects: Agricultural prices -- South Africa
- Language: English
- Type: Thesis , Masters , MCom
- Identifier: vital:1055 , http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1006970 , Agricultural prices -- South Africa
- Description: [Introduction] Much of the information available on the prices of vegetables marketed through the fresh produce markets is of limited use to producers. This information contains the actual prices for individual years. This can obviously be taken as a guide to future prices but it does not necessarily mean that those prices are a true reflection of the general pattern. In this study an attempt will be made, firstly, to establish whether a general pattern exists in the prices of selected vegetables on the East London municipal market. This will be attempted by studying the prices obtained over the 1964-1979 period. Information of this nature can be used as a basis for the planning of future crops. Secondly, to determine the months which obtain the "best" prices for the selected vegetables taking into account the quantities supplied to the market.

Effect of anticonvulsant agents on pineal gland indole metabolism
- Authors: Morton, Dougal John
- Date: 1983
- Subjects: Pineal gland -- Metabolism Anticonvulsants
- Language: English
- Type: Thesis , Doctoral , PhD
- Identifier: vital:3844 , http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1009518
- Description: Preface: The general indications that the pineal gland might be involved in homeostasis, and more specifically the evidence suggesting a role in amelioration of seizure states warranted further investigation . No reports had examined a possible link between anticonvulsant drug administration and pineal gland function, and few enabled any type of presumption to be made as to possible effects. This study was an attempt to evaluate in which ways anticonvulsant drugs might alter pineal gland indole metabolism, with a view to increasing understanding of the role of the pineal in modulation of epileptic discharges. In order to make the study as meaningful as possible extensive preliminary investigations were necessary. Pharmacokinetic determinations gave an indication of tissue concentrations of the drugs, which could then be related to observed effects. As far as possible, where existing information was lacking, the catalytic behaviour of the various enzymes was characterised in order to explain any observed effects at a molecular level. An attempt was also made to characterise the regulatory mechanisms controlling indole metabolism, again in order to define the pharmacological effects exerted by the drugs used. The complexity of the system made it impossible to suggest a single uniform regulatory hypothesis, although some significant observations were made. Finally, the studies involving the anticonvulsant drugs were conducted on intact animals, isolated organs and individual enzymes in an attempt to determine whether the observed effects were occuring at a molecular, local or central level.

A study in local history: Grahamstown, 1883-1904
- Authors: Sellick, Rose-Mary
- Date: 1983
- Subjects: Grahamstown (South Africa) -- History
- Language: English
- Type: Thesis , Masters , MA
- Identifier: vital:2556 , http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002409 , Grahamstown (South Africa) -- History
- Description: [From the Preface]: A Study in Local History: Grahamstown 1883-1904 aims to draw into a coherent picture the threads of political attitudes, approaches to racial issues and changes confronting the late Victorians in Grahamstown, particularly in the areas of sanitation, public health and shifting commercial frontiers. The relation of local development to national affairs has been investigated, although attempts to define exactly how the former influenced the latter, and vice versa, would involve one in the proverbial chicken-and-egg syndrome. Let it suffice to say that an understanding of events in the microcosm, or locality, lends clarity to the cross-current of affairs at the national level. It begins at the point where Grahamstown's commercial importance in the Eastern Cape declines after a flourish of hopes in the prospects of the Port Alfred harbour as a means of bringing trade back to Grahamstown. The study concludes when the foundation of Rhodes University College in 1904, provides a new centre of development for the city.
