- Description: Ferrocene was covalently bonded to a layer of adsorbed single-walled carbon nanotubes on a glassy carbon electrode surface using electrochemical grafting and click chemistry. Grafting of the 4-azidobenzenediazonium salt onto the surface was accomplished by electrochemical reduction. The surface-bound azide groups, with the use of a copper(I) catalyst, were reacted with ethynylferrocene to form covalent 1,2,3-triazole bonds by click chemistry. This layer by layer construction of the electrode surface results in stable electrodes by combining good electrical conductivity and increased surface area of the nanotubes with the versatility of the Sharpless click reaction.

- Description: Copper is an essential trace element which forms an integral component of many enzymes. While trace amounts of copper are needed to sustain life, excess copper is extremely toxic. Copper has been implicated in various neurodegenerative disorders, such as Wilson's and Alzheimer's diseases. Previous studies showed that melatonin, the principle secretory product of the pineal gland, binds Cupric chloride (Cu2+) and that this may have implications in copper-induced neurodegenerative diseases. In the present study, in vitro copper-mediated lipid peroxidation was induced. Melatonin (5 mM) protected against copper-mediated lipid peroxidation in liver homogenates. Electron micrographs of in vivo administered Cu2+ and melatonin show that melatonin affords some protection to rat hepatocytes in the presence of copper. Electrochemical studies performed show that melatonin, in addition to binding Cu2+, may provide protection against copper-mediated free radical damage by binding Cu1+. The findings of these studies provide further evidence for the neuroprotective role of melatonin.

- Description: Background Preeclampsia and hypothyroidism are associated with endothelial dysfunction. Iodine deficiency is a risk factor for subclinical hypothyroidism in pregnancy. However, there is a paucity of data on the relationship between iodine nutrition state in pregnancy, the degree of endothelial dysfunction, and the risk of preeclampsia. Methods Ninety-five normotensive pregnant women, 50 women with preeclampsia with no severe features, and 50 women with severe preeclampsia were enrolled into the current study from the maternity units of Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital and Mthatha Regional Hospitals in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Urinary iodine concentration (UIC), serum markers of thyroid function, aortic augmentation index, and pulse wave velocity (PWV) were compared. Results Median UIC was 167.5, 127.7, and 88.5 µg/L, respectively for normotensive pregnant women, those with preeclampsia and severe preeclampsia (p = .150). Participants with severe preeclampsia had significantly higher median thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and oxidized LDL than normotensive and preeclamptic women without severe features (respectively 3.0, 2.3, and 2.3 IU/L; 1.2, 1.0, and 1.0 IU/L, p less .05). The median Aortic augmentation index was 7.5, 19.0, and 21.0 (p less .001), and the pulse wave velocity 5.1, 5.7, and 6.3, respectively for normotensive, preeclampsia, and severe preeclampsia participants (both p less .001). In linear regressions, TSH, age, and hypertensive disease were independent predictors of elevated PWV. Conclusion Upper normal-range TSH levels in women with severe preeclampsia were associated with markers of endothelial dysfunction. The low UIC and trend towards the elevation of thyroglobulin suggest that inadequate iodine intake may have increased TSH levels and indirectly caused endothelial dysfunction. - Description: This paper considers the use of paper by academics and student computer laboratories at Rhodes University as a basis for identifying areas to reduce the amounts used and increase rates of recycling. A sample of 50 academic staff monitored the volume and purpose of the paper they used over 5 months, and the procurement officers in all the academic departments were interviewed regarding the total amount of paper used per academic department. Mean use was 34 ± 20 new sheets of paper per working day, of which 3% were trashed, 15% were kept for later use (as scrap or printed on the opposite side) and 79% were given out as notes to students, filed as records or posted out as mail to other departments or institutions. There was a significant relationship between number of students served by a department and the overall demand for paper, as well the number of staff per department and the number of recycling bins. The university could save approximately US$ 7000 per year for every 10% reduction in current use of paper (12,784 reams/year). Reduction in paper usage could be achieved through an increase in re-use of paper, printing handouts for students on both sides of each sheet of paper and by investing in printers that are capable of printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. Double-sided printers are only 20–25% more expensive than single-sided ones, but will potentially reduce paper usage by half. A 40% reduction would save the university approximately US $ 20,000 per year in direct costs, and more in reduced waste streams, as well as help promote the environmental image of the university. On a per unit basis, the higher costs for a double-sided printer in offices would be repaid in 9 months or less through reduced paper use.

- Description: The pharmacokinetics of cyclizine, a piperazine derivative useful in the prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting, was investigated in six healthy male volunteers following an intravenous bolus dose. The drug is extensively distributed with a mean volume of distribution of 16.50 ± 3.33 l/kg and a mean total clearance of 0.870 ± 0.105 l/h per kg. Urinary excretion data showed that less than one percent of the dose was excreted up to 36 h as unchanged drug in the urine. The extremely low mean renal clearance (0.005 ± 0.002 l/h per kg) for the parent drug comprised only a small proportion of total clearance indicating that urinary excretion of parent drug is not a major route of elimination for cyclizine. The drug appears to exhibit biexponential pharmacokinetics and has a terminal elimination half-life of approximately 13 h.

- Description: Two thiobarbituric acid-functionalized pyrene derivatives (P1, P2) have been synthesized to explore the photophysical properties and photodynamic activity of dyes of this type. Both compounds exhibit an intense intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) band at ca. 470 nm, which is absent in the spectra of the precursor. P1 and P2 exhibit singlet oxygen generation on irradiation with light with moderate singlet oxygen yields of 0.36 and 0.32, respectively, in DMSO. P1 showed better photodynamic activity against MCF-7 cells with an IC50 value of 18.3 μM under illumination at 455 nm for 60 min with a Thorlabs M455L3 LED (330 mW.cm−2).

- Description: A new readily-synthesized Sn(IV) tetraarylchlorin with thien-2-yl substituents (SnC) has been prepared and fully characterized by various spectroscopic techniques and its photophysical and photochemical properties, such as the singlet oxygen quantum yield (ΦΔ), fluorescence quantum yield (ΦF), triplet lifetime (τT) and photostability, have been evaluated. SnC has an unusually high ΦΔ value of 0.89 in DMF. Studies on the photodynamic activity against MCF-7 breast cancer cells exhibited a very low IC50 value of 0.9 μM and high phototoxicity (dark versus light) indices of >27.8 after irradiation with a 660 nm Thorlabs LED (280 mW cm−2). The results demonstrate that Sn(IV) tetraarylchlorins of this type are suitable candidates for further in-depth PDT studies.

The GePc derivatives exhibited high triplet quantum yields (ΦT = 0.79 for (OH)2GeOCPc and 0.82 for (OH)2GeTCPc compared to ΦT = 0.66 for (OH)2SiTCPc and 0.48 for (OH)2SiOCPc) due to the spin–orbit coupling induced by Ge(IV). The triplet lifetimes were higher for MOCPc (τT = 760 μs for (OH)2SiOCPc and 480 μs for (OH)2GeOCPc compared to τT = 210 μs for (OH)2SiTCPc and 260 μs for (OH)2GeTCPc). The fluorescent states of the metallophthalocyanine (MPc) complexes were effectively quenched by benzoquinone (BQ) and the quenching course was found to follow a diffusion-controlled (dynamic) bimolecular mechanism. Theoretical values of bimolecular rate constant for the interaction of the complexes with BQ were determined using the Stokes–Einstein–Smoluchowski model, and values together with the Stern–Volmer quenching constants were used in calculating the fluorescence lifetimes of the complexes.

- Description: Photosensitizing properties of aluminium, silicon, zinc and germanium octacarboxy phthalocyanines ((OH)AlOCPc, (OH)2SiOCPc, ZnOCPc and (OH)2GeOCPc) were studied in aqueous medium and in the presence of bovine serum albumin (BSA). Triplet quantum yields increased with increasing atomic number of the central metals of the metallophthalocyanine. The efficiency of singlet oxygen generation via energy transfer from the excited triplet state of the octacarboxy metallophthalocyanines (MOCPcs) to ground state oxygen increased markedly in the presence of BSA. The triplet state lifetimes of the MOCPc complexes in the presence of BSA were found to be longer than in the absence of BSA, ranging from 110 to 580 μs. These complexes bind readily to BSA. Stern–Volmer quenching constant KSV as well as the binding constant kb values were calculated. The probable mechanism of quenching of BSA fluorescence by the MOCPc complexes is by static quenching.

- Description: This work reports on the successful chemical linkage of folic acid (FA) to Zn mono carboxyphenoxy phthalocyanine (1) and Zn mono carboxyphenoxy tri–(tert–butyl) phthalocyanine (2). The amide bond linkage of FA to phthalocyanine (Pc) is achieved for the first time through the FA-NH2 and Pc-COOH and confirmed using FTIR, MS, elemental analysis and NMR. The linked conjugates were found to be water soluble compared to the physical mixtures of FA and Pc, which allowed for studies of singlet oxygen in water. The Pc-FA linked conjugates (1-FA and 2-FA) were found to be singlet oxygen generators with the following singlet oxygen quantum yields: 1-FA = 0.61 and 2-FA = 0.47 in DMSO and 1-FA = 0.17 and 2-FA = 0.12 in water.

- Description: Non-linear optical (NLO) parameters were determined for phthalocyanine complexes containing In, Ga and Zn as central metals when embedded in poly (methyl methacrylate) polymer in the absence and presence of quantum dots (QDs) in an effort to create the most optimal optical limiting material. The QDs employed were CdTe–TGA (TGA = thioglylcolic acid). Triplet lifetimes generally increased as the value of the ratio of absorption cross sections of the excited state to that of the ground state (k) decreased on addition of CdTe–TGA to the phthalocyanines. The saturation energy density (Fsat) values were generally smaller in the films when compared to the solutions. Fsat, Ilim, Im[χ(3)]/α and γ all gave values which were of optimal range (i.e. the Im[χ(3)]/α and γ values were high enough to ensure adequate optical limiting but not too high to make the compounds behave like optical filters. Also, the Fsat and Ilim values were small enough to mean that the optical limiting process started at an intensity which was not too high) for complex 10 containing Zn central metal and tetrasubstituted with amino groups.

- Description: The preparation of an Mo(V) tetrasulfophthalocyanine and some of its thermal and photochemical reactions have been investigated in this work. Electrochemical processes have been followed by means of the UVVis spectral changes and compared with those observed in flash photolysis. Mo(IV) and Mo(V)-ligand-radical species are common intermediates of the electrochemical and photochemical reactions. In 254 nm irradiations of the Mo(V) tetrasulfophthalocyanine in aqueous solutions of 2-propanol, the macrocycle can be photohydrogenated and the product of the photolysis can be reoxidized with O2 back to the parent complex.

- Description: In the early 1990s, in response to the emphasis laid on environment and development issues by the new South African Constitution, Rhodes University undertook several initiatives such as establishing the first Chair of Environmental Education (EE) in Africa. Another important initiative was the introduction of an open-entry participatory course for environmental educators. Owing to its flexible format and practice-based methodology, the course gained rapid popularity, necessitating the setting up of a Service Centre to help meet the increased demand. The Chair and the Service Centre have been providing a range of short courses in environment and sustainability education to professionals, and are today widely known as the Rhodes University Environmental Education and Sustainability Unit (RUEESU). The Unit offers PhD and Masters level programmes in EE, encourages meaningful research in key thematic areas, and is actively involved in publishing, and policy transformation. It also endeavours to define the role of Universities in enabling sustainability education.

- Description: An Ag/Pc/p-Si Schottky barrier (SB) diode was fabricated. The current-voltage (I-V), capacitance-voltage (C-V) and conductance-voltage (G-V) measurements were carried out to determine the characteristic parameters such as barrier height, ideality factor and series resistance of the SB diode. The non-linear behavior of ln (I) vs. ln (V) and ln (I/V) vs. V1/2 plots indicated that the thermoionic emission theory can be applied to evaluate junction parameters for the investigated SB diode rather than space-charge limited conduction (SCLC) mechanism and bulk-limited Poole–Frenkel emission. The bulk doping concentration NB and fixed oxide charges Nf was determined from the measured high frequency C-V curve and was found to be 9.5 × 1014 cm-3 and 2.3 × 1013 cm-2, respectively. The values of barrier height obtained from Norde's function were compared with those from the forward bias current-voltage characteristic, and it was seen that there was a good agreement between barrier heights from both methods.

The physicochemical behavior of these complexes were compared with those of their unmetallated and zinc counterparts. The MgPcs showed interesting absorption spectra with [8,15,22-Tris-(naphtho)-4,5-(3-carboxy-1,2-dioxyphenyl)phthalocyaninato]magnesium (II) showing a large split in the Q band whereas [8,15,22-Tris-(naphtho)-2-(carboxy) phthalocyaninato]magnesium(II) presented only a small splitting. The magnesium phthalocyanine derivatives displayed higher fluorescence quantum yields compared to unmetallated and zinc phthalocyanine counterparts. The latter gave admirable triplet and singlet oxygen quantum yields. These molecules can distinctly be employed in the field of photodynamic therapy in combination with fluorescence imaging.
