Aggregation resulted in failure of some of the ZnPc derivatives to protonate. In fact addition of protonating agents to aggregated ZnPc derivatives resulted in increase in aggregation followed by slow degradation. Axial ligands were lost on protonation. Photobleaching, fluorescence and singlet oxygen quantum yields of the protonated derivatives were compared with those of the unprotonated derivatives. In all cases protonation decreases the singlet oxygen and fluorescence quantum yields. However, photobleaching quantum yields decreased (i.e. stability increased) for the protonated derivatives except when axial ligands were present, where protonation resulted in decrease in stability.

- Description: In this paper we report on an investigation into the use of English in a prison in the Eastern Cape Province, run by the Department of Correctional Services (CS) five years after the declaration of an official multilingual policy. The investigation consisted of a range of interviews and observations in this institution, aimed at establishing the extent to which the national language policy is actually being implemented on the ground. Findings suggest that the use of English predominates in the high, official domains, that there is a marked avoidance of Afrikaans, and that Xhosa, the main language of the Eastern Cape Province, increasingly occupies the lower, unofficial domains. Tensions between policy and practice are discussed, and it is argued that the CS has shown that pragmatism is a much stronger force than ideology. While the roles of Xhosa and Afrikaans appear to be in the process of reversing in the Grahamstown prison, English has emerged as stronger there than it has ever been before. And because it will continue to be a necessary prerequisite for the mobility and promotion of staff in the country as a whole, and the lingua franca for an increasingly mobile criminal population (which means the prisons are likely to become increasingly linguistically diverse, rather than settling into regional patterns), everyone will have to have some proficiency in English, which, ironically, will promote and strengthen it even more.

- Description: The most widely read South African tabloid, the Daily Sun, covered the “Soweto gang rape” in 2012. These acts were recorded by the perpetrators on mobile phones and “went viral” as the media continuously noted. We draw on the concept of provider love that informs relations of intimacy in certain South African spaces, central to which is its materiality and the assumption that a “real” man is able to command material resources, a prerequisite for having both a girlfriend and sex. For working class and township youth these possibilities are constrained and their sense of being left behind is lived in gendered ways with violent masculinities becoming a marker of tough sexual masculinity. Informed by Foucauldian understandings of discourse, the paper undertakes a close reading of this coverage, including the reporting, editorials, and letters. If those arrested for rape are constituted as monstrous, the analysis indicates how the responses are similarly vengeful. These responses deny the forms of masculinity produced within these marginalised spaces and foreclose on other possibilities for understanding these violent acts.

Furthermore, the paper sought to analyse the factors among the five dimensions that have a main role in driving overall guest expectations and experiences. A purposive sampling method was employed in the data collection process. Primary data was collected through interviews with hotel managers in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) among factor was undertaken in order to analyse the five factors. The findings elucidate that tangibles, responsiveness and assurance play a significant role in driving guest expectations and experiences in the South African hotel industry. The paper further underscores that reliability and empathy are an integral part in providing memorable experience for the guests in hotels. Furthermore, service quality is one of the key aspects to guest expectations and experiences. Conversely, the tangible variable is deemed to be the most important factor driving guest expectations and experiences in the context of the South African hotel industry. It is evident from the findings of the paper improve guest expectations and experiences hoteliers should emphasise the following attributes: ‘reliability’, ‘empathy’ and ‘assurance. The findings of this paper makes a meaningful contribution to a better understanding of the main factors that influence guest expectations and experiences. The results of this paper have implications from a managerial point of view in the highly competitive South African hotel industry.

- Description: The problems of illiteracy in health contexts have been well documented in the literature and include such serious repercussions as medication non-compliance and failure to seek medical help during the course of an illness. The Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Medicine (REALM) is a standardised health literacy test developed in the United States that has been previously administered and researched in South Africa (Lecoko, 2000). It is an objective vocabulary test, designed as a screening instrument to identify the health literacy levels of patients in clinics, which uses item recognition of 66 health-related words. Lecoko found that, in a South African setting, only 8 out of the 66 words in the US-developed test could be deemed acceptable. Therefore, the current study focused on the principled relexicalisation of the REALM, using words gathered from health information and promotional texts in local clinics, hypothesising that this would improve its applicability. After administration to a statistically similar group of respondents, the number of acceptable words on the test increased from eight to 38. Thus it is concluded that principled relexicalisation may be one way of improving the applicability of standardised health literacy tests to local populations and settings. However, the limitations of standardised tests may prove to be a significant barrier overshadowing the value of relexicalisation.

- Description: The problems of illiteracy in health contexts have been well documented in the literature and include such serious repercussions as medication non-compliance and failure to seek medical help during the course of an illness. The Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Medicine (REALM) is a standardised health literacy test developed in the United States that has been previously administered and researched in South Africa (Lecoko, 2000). It is an objective vocabulary test, designed as a screening instrument to identify the health literacy levels of patients in clinics, which uses item recognition of 66 health-related words. Lecoko found that, in a South African setting, only 8 out of the 66 words in the US-developed test could be deemed acceptable. Therefore, the current study focused on the principled relexicalisation of the REALM, using words gathered from health information and promotional texts in local clinics, hypothesising that this would improve its applicability. - Description: This article explores the notion of changing South African youth identity and how it is depicted in the Siyagruva [We are Grooving] Series of novels for young adults. The article highlights the need for a broadening of literary theory in order to include an appropriate theoretical approach for new South African youth literature. This theory explores intercultural literary discourse by making use of, for example, the work of intercultural theorists such as Ting-Toomey (1999), Gudykunst (2003) and others. It is argued that this form of literary discourse is now appropriate as a theoretical paradigm within multilingual South Africa where intercultural communication is becoming a reality. Some (or all) of the ways in which assessment can be used to address these challenges will be discussed. If used strategically assessment methods/tasks can enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics. Some of the unique challenges that we as lecturers face in teaching mathematics can be remedied by selecting appropriate assessment techniques/tasks. Using the tutorial time fruitfully is one of the challenging aspects in teaching mathematics. Not taking tutorials and other formative assessments seriously is not an uncommon student attitude in higher education contexts. Students who are pressured for time often do not see the immediate value of formative assessment or of discussion as a useful learning activity. A collection of case studies which clearly document what has been tried in different contexts is very useful in mathematics as this information is limited in the South African higher education sector. An innovative assessment method (peer-assessment) which was introduced for a Linear Algebra second year course at Rhodes University (South Africa) will be presented: The implementation method, purpose of introducing the assessment method, its advantages, and disadvantages will be examined. A reflection on the assessment method and concluding remarks will be provided.

- Description: Limited knowledge of wetland geomorphic processes often results in poor wetland management. This study aims to illustrate the importance of incorporating geomorphic knowledge of wetland origin in their management. The geomorphic origin and dynamics of the Kafue wetland were determined from the analysis of remotely sensed and geological data. The wetland is a remnant of a paleo-lake that was captured by the tributary of the middle Zambezi River. At the point of capture, resistant Muva Group metavolcanic rocks dominate narrow valleys characterised by straight channels. The resistant lithology prevents the lower Kafue River to cut into the wetland thus maintaining wetland conditions upstream. Sedimentation regime through overbank and bed deposits shaped the wetland’s structure, ecological diversity, and hydrological functioning. The operation of the Itezhi-tezhi dam has negatively impacted the wetland’s hydrological and sedimentological regime. The dam starves the system of sediment needed for promoting levee and channel bed aggradation. Regulated discharge with reduced sediment load can lead to channel incision and therefore reduce flood frequency, which may ultimately lead to wetland desiccation.
