With many species making up the diverse ecosystem the question remains, how do they survive with less than 200 mm of rainfall per year? (Lovegrove 1993) Survival in harsh climatic conditions have been tried and conquered across the world, from desert to artic conditions. With a harsh climatic environment and barren conditions, where does one set up a place of gathering? With tourism being one of the main pillars of the economy in Namibia. On an already existing route along a perennial water source, a conference centre is set up as a midway point for meeting of tourists with a local flair (Humavindu, 2013 Through learning from this environment and environments similar to these, the final product of this treatise results in a place of meeting along this string of settlements along the river, through means of bio-inspired design and phenomenological theories of place making. The challenge of nature vs building is questioned. - Description: A doctoral study was embarked upon with the intentions of addressing cost management problems encountered on Infrastructure Delivery Projects in South Africa. Given that poor cost performance constitute hindrance to the realization of project goals, it is imperative to eliminate it from project delivery. The prevalence of cost overrun in public sector projects is a call to all stakeholders to address cost management issues in the construction industry. The predominance of cost overruns in public sector construction projects in South Africa has been observed. With the decline of the current economic conditions in South Africa, project performance is a great concern that needs attention. In addition, ineffective initiatives to curb the abuse of the procurement processes are directly affecting the outcomes of construction projects, and if these status quo remains, the sector will continue to have a bad image and continued waste of taxpayers’ money will not cease until the public sector remove non-value adding activities in their operations. Study adopted a mixed methods designed that collected both textual and statistical data. Semistructured interviews were undertaken to determine the outcomes of current project management practices in South Africa. In terms of performance of projects, the status quo paints a disconsolate picture. Findings reveal protracted processes, and the use of unqualified and inexperienced contribute to poor performance of public sector projects. Poor performance continues to dominate the construction sector, especially in the public sector. Interviews data were contrasted with evidence from project-related documents. Based on the data, the study produces a vignette of existing cost management frameworks applied to such projects. Encompassing various stages of the project delivery lifecycle, this vignette will enable an identification of the challenges afflicting cost management on projects. Accordingly, this study identified Lean opportunities from existing cost management practices. Such opportunities will enable identification of effective cost management during project delivery. There appears a need for collaborative cost management practices. Lean tools mentioned for improvement include the 5Whys, the big room, target value design, and the integration of design and construction. A collaborative cost management framework was developed through relevant theories to improve the cost management process of public sector projects.

Many countries have developed their own taxonomies and common lexicons for IT and cybersecurity work, specifically for their context. This type of common lexicon is important to help assist in the development of skills. However, South Africa does not yet have its own cybersecurity skills framework to serve as a common lexicon for the South African context. Hence, the problem defined for this study is that, without a common lexicon of the cybersecurity knowledge, skills, abilities, and tasks (KSATs) required of IT professionals as they relate to specific IT job roles in South Africa, the cybersecurity skills gap cannot be sufficiently addressed. Such a lexicon could help drive the development of skills in South Africa and, in so doing assist in alleviating the cybersecurity skills gap. This study therefore presents a common lexicon by collecting job postings over a four-month period from 1 October 2020 to 31 January 2021. These job postings were analysed using a thematic content analysis. The results identified 20 common IT job roles, together with the specific KSATs relating to each job role identified. As a result, these job roles form part of a proposed cybersecurity skills framework for South Africa (CSFwSA) which could help and guide South Africa towards more targeted cybersecurity skills development. The proposed framework could also be useful in guiding tertiary educational facilities in the creation of cybersecurity curricula that represent the real-world expectations. - Description: Low construction labour productivity and inadequate welfare of construction workers is a compound challenge in Zimbabwe. This challenge is due to shortcomings situated in the Decent Work Agenda. Whilst a plethora of contributory factors exists, those that affect the Zimbabwean construction industry were identified for interrogation. Therefore, the study aimed to improve and sustain construction labour productivity in Zimbabwe through fulfilling significant decent work substantive elements, in consideration of demographic variables of stakeholders. A cross-sectional survey research strategy was utilised with quantitative data being collected from selected respondents through the use of questionnaires. The population for the study consisted of randomly selected construction companies registered with the Construction Industry Federation of Zimbabwe and based in Harare, Bulawayo and Shurugwi where site managers’/project managers’ participated. Construction skilled and semi-skilled workers on thirteen (13) construction sites, situated within the same study area, participated in the study. Educators from technical and vocational training institutions and respondents from relevant regulatory bodies were also selected to participate in the study. Quantitative data analysis methods which included Pearson chi-squared tests, Mann-Whitney U tests; Kruskal-Wallis tests, Pearson bivariate correlation method and Regression analysis were utilised. Demographic variables (age, gender, designation, educational levels and experience) were utilised to determine the existence of statistically significant differences in respondents’ perceptions. Construction companies are encouraged to implement corporate social responsibility strategies through equipping workers of different educational levels with knowledge and skills that can be transferred to and benefit themselves and their communities. Adequately trained construction workers best serve their communities through improving their livelihoods, improved safety and health consciousness and quality workmanship. People centred management aspects were found to be fundamental within construction sites as they promote the welfare of workers and should precede any productivity improvement drives. Technical and vocational training institutions need to inculcate sustainability learning objectives within their curricula if any meaning strides in enhancing welfare and productivity of workers is to be achieved. Also, establishing structured on-the-job training that incorporates sustainability learning objectives to achieve workers’ safety on sites is essential. There was a consensus that working conditions must ensure the welfare of workers first before any productivity gains can be realised. Provision of acceptable decent working conditions for different designations and educational levels was encouraged. A comprehensive model was developed for sustaining construction labour productivity that included statistically significant regression models and derived statistically significant demographics from construction labour productivity determinants under study. Validation of the regression models was undertaken through cross-validation and comparison with existing theory. Tenable labour productivity performance measurement and reporting must be inclusive of decent work accomplishments. Short-term interventions that include awareness campaigns and provision of adequate working conditions are required for project-based resolutions whilst, long-term interventions are required where structural reforms within the training of skilled, semi-skilled workers and managers are required, for continuous improvement.

Friction stir welding of thin section aluminium extrusions for marine applications

- Description: This dissertation focuses on the development of a welding extrusion feeder, tool and schedule for implementation of defect-free butt welds on long, thin and complex-shape aluminium extrusions, as used by the marine industry. Viability of employing Friction Stir Welding (FSW) as a welding technology for joining long extrusions with a short-bed and bolt-on feeder to facilitate onsite fabrication of flat structures in shipbuilding is evaluated. An FSW feeder, tool and process control unit were designed, developed and integrated with an existing FSW platform, to facilitate implementation of continuous welds. Weld data acquired from literature review, experimentation, mechanical testing and metallographic analysis was used in design considerations for the development of a feeder. Subsequently, butt welds were implemented successfully on long 3 mm AA6082-T6 extrusions, during continuous FSW on the feeder. A specially adapted tool, the Floating Bobbin Tool, used with the feeder to implement butt welds was designed and developed from literature tool heuristics and weld trials. The tool eliminated the need for a backing bar and enabled tool-workpiece auto-alignment, beneficial with thin-section extrusions. Effect of rotational and weld speed and tool geometry of two tools (Tool 1 and 2), on weld forces and quality was tested, to establish optimum parameters for attaining high quality welds. Tool geometry had a profound effect on weld forces and integrity; Tool 2 welds exhibited superior and consistent weld quality, meeting maritime rules and standards and proving the adequacy of using FSW for joining long thin extrusions. Feeder process control, automation and optimisation, was implemented by process control unit devices, in addition to force and position control provided by the existing FSW platform. Owing to process control, automation and optimisation during continuous FSW of thin long and complex-shape aluminium extrusions, welding setup times and process variations are minimised and chances for defect-free welds increased, boosting production and cost savings in large panel fabrication in shipbuilding.

- Description: Since the exhaust emissions legislation for motor vehicles with combustion engines is complicating the manufacturing of environmental yet powerful engines more than ever, automobile manufacturers have approached this challenge by means of downsizing, hybridization of combustion and electric engines and variable valve opening times. In these cases conventional, mechanical valve trains are still used. The subject of this master thesis is the development of a mechatronic control unit as replacement for the camshaft driven valve train of common combustion engines. The system’s aim is a contribution to the progression of the development of modern combustion engines satisfying current demands in terms of economy and efficiency. The developed system is based on the “Full Variable Valve Train” project, founded at the “Institute of Vehicle Construction Wolfsburg” at the “Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences”. An indirectly controlled high speed servo valve that is actuated by a piezoelectric actuator and pressurized hydraulic fluid is being developed. The overall aim is to obtain advantages from a control engineering perspective, being able to reduce the size of the used piezo actuator and hence solve the packaging and regulation issues of the overall system. After manufacturing and improvement activities, a system could be developed that allows a variable control of the engine valve movement. The best results are achieved using a rectangular function for the engine valve actuator. The system allows engine valve operation independent from the crankshaft position and shows the potential to generate higher engine torque and power output while decreasing fuel consumption and emissions at the same time.

This was achieved through identifying factors that constitute an ITRM framework, determining the current IT risk management methods used in provincial business entities and assessing the IT risk culture. This research study was conducted at the Limpopo Economic Development Agency (LEDA), which is a provincial business entity in the Limpopo province. The objectives of the study were accomplished using a design science research approach which involved the creation of an artefact and design theory as a means to improve the current state of practice as well as existing research knowledge about provincial business entities and their management of IT risks. The Nelson Mandela University Design Science Methodology Framework (NMU-DSFM) was identified as the methodology to be followed to devise the contribution in the form of an artefact. It was found that the organisation does not have a positive IT risk culture. From the study of the data analysis performed, it was evident that provincial business entities have challenges associated with adequately identifying IT risks. The findings highlighted that for the proper management of risks, risk governance should be effective by ensuring that the board of directors takes the responsibility of IT risk management, and the essentials of risk governance were discussed at length. The research output for this study was a framework. The adoption of this framework may positively contribute to strengthening governance of IT risk management in the provincial business entities. Best practices were highlighted for ease of reference to determine what is required and how to implement this regarding IT risk management.

The area of digitization has the potential to improve how the South African government delivers services to citizens and those that reside within the borders of the country. Amongst the five elements of successful e-government transformation, process reform is at the top of the list. e-Government is not just about the automation of existing processes and inefficiencies. It is also about the creation of new processes and new relationships between all the stakeholders involved. In the South African context, the lack of optimised, automated, and digitalised processes within various government departments has impeded crossfunctional processes’ effectiveness and efficiencies. Manual interventions in processing and transactions occur to comply with the legal requirement to manually sign documents. This poses difficulties in integrating processes within government departments to achieve a seamless experience for the citizen. As a result, this treatise sets out to answer the question of what needs to be in place to allow for the utilisation of digital signatures in automating the processing of e-government services for a seamless experience for citizens and businesses. The resulting Digital Signature Framework can be used by government departments to implement digital signatures and provides providing guidance, facilitating understanding, and providing ease of use, scalability, and agility.

A literature review revealed limited publicly accessible documents to guide NPOs in particular in the task of cybersecurity governance. Therefore, the problem addressed by this research is the lack of a framework to guide cybersecurity governance efforts in non-profit organisations. This real-world problem was approached using the design science paradigm. It was important to identify, firstly, factors unique to the general context of non-profit organisations, including the constraints and limitations faced by non-profit organisations. Secondly, the key cyber risks for non-profit organisations and how they can materialise through the use of emails, social media, and BYODs in the NPO context, were identified. As a third step, available cybersecurity governance guidelines were analysed to determine best practices. This investigation also revealed the people, process, and technology elements as the pillars of information security. This resulted in the development of a framework (the PotLer framework) to guide cybersecurity governance efforts in non-profit organisations based on the input of the three points mentioned above. The framework was constructed around four conceptual elements, namely information security governance; people, process, and technology; governance elements; and key risks. The PotLer framework expands the high-level generic constructs beyond the conceptual space and provides implementation guidance in the form of a questionnaire to be completed by NPOs. The questionnaire was developed as an interactive spreadsheet that requires “Yes” or “No” responses from participants and generates a recommendation based on these answers. To evaluate the PotLer framework, the aforementioned questionnaire was completed by four NPOs. An additional questionnaire obtained their input on the utility and comprehensiveness of the framework.

The challenges of professional women in a male-dominated South African construction industry

The improved number of professional women entering the statuses of this male dominance is noticeable, but the percentage of men still speak volume. Hence, there are imbalances that are correspondent to discrimination trials. This study explore challenges faced by professional women in the construction industry of South Africa, in the Eastern Cape. The study embraced exploratory research design in order to formulate preliminary investigations based on relatively unknown areas of professional women in construction industry. Therefore, this qualitative method incorporated interpretivism as its research philosophy, with the motive that this paradigm succeeds individual ontology that does not perceive as objective and independent. The purposeful sampling technique deployed in identifying the research participants, coupled by ten (10) women rendering professional services in the construction industry. Data collected was analysed thematically, which gave rise to presented themes, deliberated and construed in headings framed from research objectives. The study revealed that professional women still trapped between resisting, accommodating masculine politics and femininity distinctions regardless of evolutions. Most participants attested to the gender imbalances that propagates marginalisation, which is in line with the revelations. The study also suggest that men reject professionalism identity in the context of women. Other key challenges were not limited to backgrounds of the industry, outlook and progression that necessitated women taking executive positions. Further still, participants are aware of flouted construction industry policies and the strategies to use to by their counterparts to obscure them. Hence, the study suggested monitoring and review of policies in place by the policy makers. A recommended that similar research be carried out in South Africa, particularly provinces, as a literature gap has been identified. These recommended studies could enhance professional women, men and policy makers in profound consideration of the challenges faced by professional women in the construction industry.

Because of the growth of cities, certain resources are difficult to access and people need to trav el vast distances and cross dangerous barriers in order to access these resources. This thesis involves the research of social and spatial justice within the South Afri can city, which has resulted in a poor quality of life and a lack of resources. More specifically this thesis aimed at creating an environment that will aid in a better quality of life through spatial and social equity by creating an active and positive space to access certain resources. The particular focus area is the rural community of Pellsrus in Jeffreys Bay. The context has been analysed to enable a sound understanding of the formation of the town, the behaviour of the town and its people, the urban conditions and the spatial structures. Research lead to a site being selected that would form an transition space connecting separated communities and resources. The design is aimed at creating a space for people to gather, gain access to the needed resourc es and act as a linkage or transition zone between certain areas of the town. The objective was to enrich the current movement systems and enhance the existing resources, ultimately resulting in the design of a trade-resource centre in Pellsrus. The architectural design is formulated as a mean of locality and community. Innovative construction methods to address housing demand in South Africa

Due to several factors contributing to this housing delivery delay, there is proliferation of informal settlements. The factors include fast-paced urbanization, which is mostly triggered by rural-urban migration that prompts urban growth and its attendant challenges that exert intense demands on the local government, thus the government is unable to keep up with the demands for housing and other related needs. The currently used conventional method (masonry construction) of construction for the construction of subsidy housing is perceived to be procedural and time consuming which is also one of the factors contributing to the delay in housing delivery. According to the research, interventions in the built form could be applied to address these issues. The focus of this study was on the construction aspect of the factors that contribute to the delay/problem. The primary aim for this study was to explore innovative prefabricated modular construction methods, proposed as alternatives to the construction of government subsidy housing in order to address housing demands in informal settlements. The research onion diagram was adopted and methodically followed as the research design for this study, whereby the data collection method that was adopted as part of the research onion was included a Desktop Survey and a Site Survey. The population and sample of this study comprised of a mixed group of participants, which were selected in accordance with the research attributes. The research findings indicate that the modular construction methods can indeed be used as an alternative to address some of the subsidy housing delivery problems. However, the challenge of any new innovative solution is to overcome end-user scepticism as resistance is inevitable. The research recommendation is for this research work to be taken to the next phase which would involve simulations of life size experimental models of these proposed innovative methods of construction, to further assess the viability of these proposed construction methods, before they may be implemented.

The study arose with the concern that the environment is mostly affected when informal settlements are developed. If informal settlements are less aware of the damage caused by littering and improper waste disposal, the waste management plan of a local municipality becomes ineffective where local communities do not assume their responsibilities for ensuring healthy and safe living environments. A quantitative research design was applied in this study. Population for this research comprised of Msukaligwa Local Municipality, with a study sample drawn from Ward 16 Nyibe households, church leaders, local business owners, and ward councillor. A nonprobability sampling technique for selection of study participants was used, and this technique applied in both households and stakeholders. Data was collected through self-administered survey questionnaires that were statistically analysed, weaving in filed observations, where deemed necessary. The researcher discovered that Nyibe (New Ermelo) community’s level of awareness of the environmental impact of littering is impressively above average. Majority of households’ respondents identified all the negative environmental impact caused by littering in vulnerable communities and the impact is considered a major challenge within Nyibe. Necessary waste disposal infrastructures are not provided at Nyibe leading to people littering on any open land, burning, or throwing solid waste in their family pit.

Ultra-high precision diamond turning of advanced contact lens polymers

- Description: Contact lens polymer-based materials are extensively used in the optical industry owing to their excellent corrosion resistance, the possibility of mass production and their ability to be processed without external lubrication. Owing to the fast growth in optical industries, contact lens (CL) requires high accuracy and a high surface quality. The demand for high-accuracy and minimal surface roughness drives the development of ultra-high precision machining technology with regard to single point diamond turning (SPDT). Ultra-high precision diamond turning is an advanced manufacturing technique employed in the machining of CLs owing to its capability of producing high optical surfaces with complex shapes and nanometric accuracy. Yet, even with the advances in ultra-high precision machining (UHPM), it is not continuously easy to achieve a highquality surface finish during polymers machining as the adhesion of the tool chip around the tool dictates the presence of electrostatic charges. The electrostatic charges encountered by a cutting tool when turning advanced CLs are important as they reflect the quality and condition of the tool, machine, fixture, and sometimes even the finished surface, which is responsible for tool wear and poor surface quality. This study investigates the role of cutting parameters, namely cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut on surface roughness (Ra), electrostatic charge (ESC) and material removal rate (MRR), which determines machine economics and the quality of machining contact lens polymers. The experiments were mainly conducted on two different advanced polymeric materials: polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and Optimum Extreme (Roflufocon E) CLs. Experimentation was carried out on the Nanoform 250 ultra-grind turning machine with a monocrystalline diamond-cutting tool for machining the PMMA and Roflufocon E CL polymers, covering a wide range of machining parameters. Before conducting the experiments, a design of experiment was conducted according to the response surface methodology (RSM) that is based on the Box-Behnken Design (BBD). In addition, the research study focused on the determination of the optimum cutting conditions leading to minimum Ra and ESC as well as maximum productivity in the SPDT of the PMMA and Roflufocon E CL polymers, using a monocrystalline diamondcutting tool. The optimization was based on RSM together with the desirability function approach. In addition, a mathematical model was developed for Ra, ESC and MRR using a RSM regression analysis for PMMA and Roflufocon E CL polymers by means of Design Expert software. RSM allowed for the optimization of the cutting conditions for minimal Ra and ESC as well as maximal MRR, which provides an effective knowledge base for process parameters to enhance process performance in the SPDT of CL polymers. Furthermore, this study also deals with the development of Ra, ESC and MRR prediction models for the diamond turning of PMMA and Roflufocon E CL polymers, using the fuzzy logic based artificial intelligence (AI) method. The fuzzy logic model has been developed in terms of machining parameters for the prediction of Ra, ESC and MRR. To judge the accuracy and ability of the fuzzy logic model, an average percentage error was used. The comparative evaluation of experiments and the fuzzy logic approach suggested that the obtained average errors of Ra, ESC and MRR using the fuzzy logic system were in agreement with the experimental results. Hence, the developed fuzzy logic rules can be effectively utilized to predict the ESC, Ra and MRR of PMMA and Roflufocon E CL polymers in automated optical manufacturing environments for high accuracy and a reduction of computational cost. Moreover, owing to the brittle nature of optical polymers, the Roflufocon E CL polymer requires ductile-mode machining for improved surface quality. Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation methods are thus applied to investigate the atomistic reaction at the tool/workpiece surface to clearly study and observe conditions occurring at nanometric scale in polymer machining. This research study is particularly concerned with the comparative analysis of experiments and a MD study of the Roflufocon E optical polymer nano cutting approach to the atomistic visualization of the plastic material flow at the tool/workpiece interface during cutting. The simulated MD acting force, machine stresses, and the temperature at the cutting region were evaluated to access the accuracy of the model. Hence, the nanomachining simulations were found to have a correlation to the experimental machining results.

Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation methods are thus applied to investigate the atomistic reaction at the tool/workpiece surface to clearly study and observe conditions occurring at nanometric scale in polymer machining. This research study is particularly concerned with the comparative analysis of experiments and a MD study of the Roflufocon E optical polymer nano cutting approach to the atomistic visualization of the plastic material flow at the tool/workpiece interface during cutting. The simulated MD acting force, machine stresses, and the temperature at the cutting region were evaluated to access the accuracy of the model. Hence, the nanomachining simulations were found to have a correlation to the experimental machining results.

ISGOP: A model for an information security governance platform

- Description: Sound information security governance is an important part of every business. However, the widespread ransomware attacks that occur regularly cast a shadow of doubt on information security governance practices. Countermeasures to prevent and mitigate ransomware attacks are well known, yet knowledge of these countermeasures is not enough to ensure good information security governance. What matters is how the countermeasures are implemented across a business. Therefore, an information security governance structure is needed to oversee the deployment of these countermeasures. This research study proposes an information security governance model called ISGoP, which describes an information security governance platform comprising a data aspect and a functional aspect. ISGoP adopted ideas from existing frameworks. An information security governance framework known as the Direct-Control Cycle was analyzed. This provided ISGoP with conceptual components, such as information security-related documents and the relationships that exist between them. It is important to understand these conceptual components when distributing information security-related documents across all level of management for a holistic implementation. Security related documents and their relationships comprise the data aspect of ISGoP. Another framework that influenced ISGoP is the SABSA framework. The SABSA framework is an enterprise architecture framework that enables interoperability. It ensures collaboration between the people working for a business. Ideas from the SABSA framework were used to identify roles within the information security governance framework. The SABSA life cycle stages were also adopted by ISGoP. Various functions define the functional aspect of ISGoP. These functions are organised according to the life cycle stages and the views defined for the various roles. A case study was used to evaluate the possible utility of ISGoP. The case study explored a prototype implementation of ISGoP in a company. In addition to demonstrating its utility, the case study also allowed the model to be refined. ISGoP as a model must be refined and modified for specific business circumstances but lays a solid foundation to assist businesses in implementing sound information security governance.
