- Description: Over the coming decades, Africa is expected to experience disturbing effects due to climate change and increased land cover change due to human influences presenting a significant concern for the future well-being of human and biological systems, the latter being the foundation of ecosystem services supplied to humanity. Therefore, unprecedented transdisciplinary cooperation, coordination, and integration amongst researchers, government, and civil society are necessary to increase the resiliency of these systems. This study aims to provide an outline of the Africa Alive Corridors (AAC) as an essential model for the encouragement of sustainable development through Earth Stewardship science. These aims are accompanied by the quantification and forward modelling for land cover change of the Critical Zone over 10 Great Lake Basins across one of the AAC, the Western Rift Valley Corridor (WRVC), in East Africa between the years 2018 and 2060. This approach provides the foundation for implementing improved regional governance, better encouragement of sustainable development beyond the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and education programs, such as the AAC, that promote socio-ecological resilience through Earth Stewardship Science. The AAC archives a portion of East Africa as the WRVC, a corridor along the western branch of the East African Rift System that highlights twenty heritage nodes, primarily great lakes, mountain ranges, national parks, and biological hotspots. These heritage entities are associated with ca. 12-million-years of evolution and transformation of the East African topography and related African Great Lake (AGL) systems. The thesis defines the study area by delineating AGL basins intersected by the WRVC. Across these basins, land cover change analysis provides a platform for an integrated assessment of the projected health of the corridor region. Existing land cover datasets provide the initial conditions of the study area for 2008 and 2013. Land cover between 2008 and 2013 is cross-tabulated using the Land Cover Module in the Terrset software, followed by the iii delineation of sub-models and driver variable identification. The Multi-Layer Perceptron algorithm provides the transition potentials between tree cover, urban area, cropland, wetland, and open area classes. Ecological assessment and biogeography of coastal vegetation and flora in southern Mozambique

- Description: This study considered aspects of the vegetation of the coastal zone of southern Mozambique, an area with a rich biodiversity. The vegetation and flora were assessed in their current state including the associated anthropogenic pressures. The environmental conditions that determined the distribution of the vegetation were evaluated. A hierarchical classification, description and ecological interpretation of the vegetation and flora of the coastal zone in southern Mozambique are presented. Analysis was based on 242 sample quadrats that were distributed in a stratified manner throughout the study area. The vegetation could be grouped into six distinct types of vegetation: Dune Forest, Coastal Forest, Coastal Grassland, Coastal Miombo, Coastal Savanna and Coastal Woodland. Species diversity was high for the all the vegetation types, particularly in the woody elements. A total of 673 species in 410 genera was recorded. They represented 104 families with Fabaceae and Rubiaceae being the most common. Of these, 6.6% were endemic or near-endemic to the coastal zone of southern Mozambique with Coastal Forest being the habitat with the greatest endemism. All soils from different vegetation types had poor agricultural potential. Soil properties were the strongest defining environmental feature separating the vegetation types: e.g. pH was high in Dune Forest compared to the others. Results from Maxent modelling suggest that the distribution of endemic species is influenced by a combination of climatic and non-climatic variables. Soil type, temperature annual range and precipitation of the driest month were the most important predictor variables. Overlaying the potential distributions of the seven selected species indicated two areas of abundance of endemic species – these should be given attention for conservation. Endemic species are not well protected in southern Mozambique – their sampled and potential habitats are largely outside protected areas. Hence, additional reserves should be created to improve their protection. Most endemic and near-endemics species were found in the south, from Ponta de Ouro (Matutuine, south of Maputo Province) to Manhica district (north of the Maputo Province) forming part of the Maputaland Centre of Endemism. A second concentration of endemism was found in the Inhambane Province, specifically the Inhassoro and Vilanculos districts. This is proposed to be an Important Plants Area (IPA). Because most endemics and near-endemics are found in the Coastal Forest, their main threat is harvesting for charcoal production, although none of the endemic species are specifically targeted for charcoal production. In Inhambane they are also threatened by the tourism industry, agriculture and settlements. The impact of the habitat destruction on endemic species is expected to cause severe declines in the near future. The tourism industry and harvesting of trees for charcoal production and over-frequent fires are the main drivers of vegetation loss in this region. Shifting agriculture, harvesting for firewood and construction materials, cattle grazing (at a minor scale) are also impacts, but these were only observed in a small area of Maputo Province. Although the study was done in coastal zone of southern Mozambique, effective management of whole coastal zone of the country will be required to maintain a functioning and diverse ecosystem. Priorities for management are to ensure that forests are protected, in particular, Dune Forest. Actions are required to minimise degradation of coastal vegetation. Further research on Coastal Forest restoration should be planned, as field observations in this study confirm that forest in the coastal zone of southern Mozambique has resilience.

However, the absence of a coherent way to implement this legislation, in the form of software objects in technology systems, has created a gap in organisations around the world. To bridge this gap, this thesis proposes a compliance model based on a conceptual framework, a design framework, and a software-based prototype. The objective of this model is to test how best to enforce information privacy regulations in technology systems handling personally identifiable information. The proposed conceptual framework views information privacy compliance as a context-driven reality enforced by configurable software objects. To refine the conceptual framework, a design framework and a software-based prototype was developed using the design science research methodology as the theoretical construct and the UML ontology language and object-oriented programming paradigms as the underpinning practical construct. This prototype will assist organisational stakeholders in understanding and visualising the theoretical and practical constructs of handling personally identifiable information as software objects in technology systems. The design and implementation of this prototype resulted in some practical and theoretical recommendations. These include the adoption of a decision model notation (DMN) as a formal standard to manage privacy rules and the creation of a context-aware privacy compliance zone (CAP). This study focuses on the factors that influence the academic performance of learners in matric in King Williams Town. The importance of this research is to investigate the issues that negatively impact on the performance of Grade 12 learners at Breidbach High School. Further, the importance of this study is to share the findings of the research with community members as well as the Department of Basic Education with the view and hope that they will address these issues. The research question is: What are the factors influencing academic performance of Grade 12 learners at Breidbach High School in Breidbach outside King Williams Town? - Description: Persistent depreciating human settlements is a global challenge, particularly in developing countries and this challenge contributes to the continuously increasing housing gap, despite several novel policies and programmes. Although there is a dearth of research-based literature on human settlements management, studies show that property management, Facility Management, housing management and urban management impact the sustainability of all these built environment milieus which form part of the human settlements’ sub-components. This research aimed at altering the afore-said challenge by exploring the management of human settlements in Nigeria and in South Africa. Philosophically, the research is pragmatic, and it rests on positivist deductive reasoning. The methods used for data collection include a review of literature, collection of archival records, and empirical studies of purposively selected professionals and stakeholders involved in human settlements’ management in Nigeria and in South Africa. The findings indicate that existing human settlements in the case studies are “good” and “acceptable” with the majority adopting an outsourced method of management. Furthermore, the lack of maintenance records, the deficiency in policy monitoring and the training of management and maintenance personnel were the three highest ranking factors indicated to be affecting human settlements management. The factor analysis established ownership, human resource and capital, social, legal, technology, economic, physical and environmental factors as vital and very significant in achieving sustainable management of human settlements. The study recommends the professionalisation of the field of human settlements as well as a formulation of management policy among others. The study developed a management model for human settlements, and it advocates that human settlements managers, owners and organisations should apply the model in this study, to improve their human settlement management practices, so as to achieve sustainability, and in essence, Sustainable Development Goal 11. It is hoped that the suggested management model will influence human settlement policy development and review, the designing of human settlement management programmes including the framework for their ongoing monitoring and evaluation. The study furthermore contributes to the development of housing and human settlement curricula and evolving human settlement research in both developed and developing countries.

- Description: Persistent depreciating human settlements is a global challenge, particularly in developing countries and this challenge contributes to the continuously increasing housing gap, despite several novel policies and programmes. Although there is a dearth of research-based literature on human settlements management, studies show that property management, Facility Management, housing management and urban management impact the sustainability of all these built environment milieus which form part of the human settlements’ sub-components. This research aimed at altering the afore-said challenge by exploring the management of human settlements in Nigeria and in South Africa. Philosophically, the research is pragmatic, and it rests on positivist deductive reasoning. The methods used for data collection include a review of literature, collection of archival records, and empirical studies of purposively selected professionals and stakeholders involved in human settlements’ management in Nigeria and in South Africa. The findings indicate that existing human settlements in the case studies are “good” and “acceptable” with the majority adopting an outsourced method of management. Furthermore, the lack of maintenance records, the deficiency in policy monitoring and the training of management and maintenance personnel were the three highest ranking factors indicated to be affecting human settlements management. The study adopted a qualitative research and ethnographic approach in which empirical data was collected in the context of fieldwork through informal, semi-structured and focus group interviews as well as participant observation during the activities of a Catholic Charismatic prayer group in Minna, Nigeria. Theoretical perspectives drawn from identity, hermeneutics and anthropology of extraordinary experience were used as analytical lens in the study. The study revealed that identity within the Catholic Charismatic Renewal was constructed principally in relation to the Holy Spirit. A spiritual experience or encounter was central in such identity construction, and the subjective and intersubjective identity of the members revolved around the two key concepts of ‘spirit-centred identity’ and ‘empowerment’. The study indicated that the members of the movement constructed their identity in ways that demonstrated their loyalty to the Church and their status as an officially recognised Catholic movement. In addition, their identity was also constructed in relation to the functions that they perceived themselves to perform within the Catholic Church. Although the members of the movement considered their charismatic and catholic identities to be compatible, they understood themselves to be different from other Catholics. The study also showed that while music was considered to be important within the movement, the context and content of its ritual music were overwhelmingly Pentecostal, and music that projected a catholic identity was relegated to the background and given expression mainly in the realm of individual religious practice. The study suggests that identity construction within the Catholic Charismatic Renewal is multiple, ongoing, flexible, and sometimes contradictory and paradoxical. Through its identity construction, the members of the movement demonstrate the heterogeneity of the Catholic space and seek to extend the boundaries of Catholicism.

The South African Citrus Industry was one of these industries. During this pandemic, certain amenities were regarded as dangerous and potentially a contributor to the spread of the COVID-19 virus. During the lockdown regulations implemented in March of 2020, the Sundays River Valley Citrus Industry noticed certain interesting developments concerning labour and productivity. Initial review of the effects of alcohol and substance abuse on the productivity of citrus workers, revealed limited research into the broader South African Citrus Industry, with more focus on the Western Cape and related wine farms. The aim of this research study is to identify the impact of alcohol and substance abuse on productivity within the Sundays River Valley Citrus Industry. Specifically focusing on absenteeism, workers injuries on duty and workplace incidents pertaining to disciplinary processes. The research further aims to add a monetary value to the implication of these events on the Sundays River Valley Citrus Industry and the possible management strategies involved to remediate the potential affects thereof. This study uses the phenomenological and case study research approaches focusing on the workplace of the researcher within the Sundays River Valley Citrus Industry. Using qualitative content analysis during the interview process, the themes and findings were evaluated alongside the research questions and was found to be in agreement with the views flowing from the research data. The South African economy continues to show a decline with a negative growth in gross domestic product (GDP), for two consecutive quarters (last quarter of 2016 and first quarter of 2017). The current dampened expected growth rates, with a highly penetrated insurance market in South Africa, are strong incentives to look for growth beyond the borders of South Africa. This study, therefore, explores the potential impact on investor confidence, when Discovery Limited enters Foreign Markets. The research objectives, namely Industry-Based considerations, institution-based considerations, resource-based considerations and recommendations, were used to draw linkages between the Discovery Shared Value Insurance Model and the Business Model Framework. Internationalisation models were introduced, yet Peng’s Comprehensive Model of Foreign Market Entry in conjunction with Discovery Limited’s Shared-Value Insurance Model, provides a greater scope to assess the foreign market entries The study seeks to propose a strategy for when firms enter foreign markets and explores investor confidence when doing so. The findings of the study will be able to be generalised in the market amongst firms who seek to enter foreign markets and provides insight and recommendations to all stakeholders upon taking the move. In pursuing this study, a qualitative approach was conducted. A review of the literature making use of academic resource, annual financial reports of the company and country reports available in the public domain, were used. Interviews were conducted using semi-structured questions with the Partner Market Executives of Discovery to gain deeper insight and understanding. An invitation to interview six (6) participants, was distributed and only five (5) were interviewed. This constitutes a (5/6) 83.3% response rate. These Partner Market Executives were best positioned to answer questions related to Foreign Market Entry (Partner Markets) for Discovery Limited. The questions were informed by the literature. A Thematic Analysis was conducted on the data collected to identify core themes that strongly resonated with participants. The research findings are credible, and the subject of the research was correctly identified, from the view point of both the researchers and the participants. The participation was voluntary and record keeping of audio and transcriptions were done. Based on the key themes identified for each of the three foreign market entry considerations, the study concluded that: ‘Vitality becomes core to the solution’, ‘the intellectual property that sits behind the Shared Value Model’, ‘Can’t run away from regulatory approval’, ‘Timing to enter a market’, and ‘infrastructure to enter a foreign market’ are crucial considerations that an investor would like to see, and Discovery Limited must be mindful of this when targeting growth in its share price. Therefore, Discovery will have to consider advice on infrastructure development for Africa and they will have to set an unobstructed vision and timeline to expand into Africa. Discovery Limited, being a South African Company, is still challenged with a product that must be compatible with the rest of the African market. Entering into Africa might not be a priority now, but the lack of knowledge on what the product for the African market would look like, left room for future research.

This treatise explores the principles of conflict management in community policing. The study examines the different theories relating to conflict and the interdisciplinary perspectives on conflict management styles and how this literature relates to community policing. The study applied the interpretive paradigm as a qualitative design to understand the social reality experiences of participants in the empirical study of community policing and how they perceived the research problem; namely, the trust relationships between police officials and community members. A purposive sampling method was used and five Community Police Forum members and five former police officials participated and provided abundant and accurate data that assisted in answering the research questions and guided the researcher towards suitable conflict management tools for community policing. Coding procedures and thematic analysis were applied in the study to perform the data analysis. The findings suggest that utilising conflict management principles can be useful as a tool to manage conflict between the community and police; particular in gang and drug related crime areas. The study selected the three biggest schools in the area to examine how the community’s involvement in them has surfaced from their founding up to the present times. The study found that through these three schools, this community managed, under apartheid, to take initiative by mobilising itself for self-development by building these schools and infusing them with a liberation curriculum that was required for the conditions of oppression and resistance at the time. This community in essence turned the intentions of Bantu education around by using these schools as sites of alternative education that was delivered by its own activist teachers to conscientise the student youth about community struggles. Black people in this community used these schools as emancipatory spaces to connect student struggles with community struggles to build community power. In the post-apartheid epoch, much of these traditions and levels of community participation have dropped because of new precarious economies and labour conditions that keep the adult population busy. As a result, present-day community participation is not as politically intentional as it was under apartheid. Theoretically, the study applied Paulo Freire’s Critical Community Pedagogy. Organisations with the ability to nurture and improve the engagement levels of their employees are able to prosper as sustainable, competitive and adaptive organisations. The aim of this research is to determine which factors influence engagement of employees in South Africa and specifically in the aquaculture arena, which predominantly employs unskilled and semi-skilled people. A quantitative research design was applied to determine the work engagement levels of employees in an aquaculture organisation in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Participants were requested to complete the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale as well as a biographic questionnaire. Engagement levels of different biographic groups were compared. Results indicate that there is a statistical and practical significant difference in the engagement levels of employees from different biographic groups. Older employees and employees with tertiary qualifications reported higher engagement levels. Female employees also indicated significantly higher engagement levels than their male colleagues. There are significant differences in the engagement levels of employees from different work sections and different lengths of service. Many of the differences in engagement levels can be explained in terms of the Job Demands-Resources Model. The difference in engagement level between respondents from different work sections may be due to differences in leadership style of the section supervisors. The scope of this study is not sufficient to explain the reasons for differences and more research in this area is recommended. The researcher ensured that ethical considerations were maintained throughout the study to protect the participants. Reliability and validity were also ensured throughout the study. The total sample of the study was 207 and the mean age of the participants was 26,9 years. Hypertension and HIV were the conditions most diagnosed prior to, and during, pregnancy. Most of the delivered infants were females. The findings of the study revealed a significant association between maternal diabetes, maternal hypertension and the infants’ birth weight. Additional findings iv revealed that independent of gestational age, mothers with hypertension are likely to deliver low birth weight (LBW) infants. Antenatal care is of the utmost importance during pregnancy and special attention should be given to the management of hypertension. The researcher developed recommendations for primary health care (PHC) nurses in antenatal clinics (ANC) to address the management of the major maternal drivers of LBW infants in order to decrease and prevent adverse birth outcomes.

Black South Africans were also immensely subjected to land dispossession during the colonization by the Dutch and later the British and forced land removals during the apartheid era. Although this historical context from a lens of “race" is important to note here given how it shaped the South African geography of land ownership, there is nonetheless another dimension; that of gender. The main assertion driving this study is that due to a number of contextual factors (such as women's cultural status, economic inequality and poverty), land ownership between women and men is highly unequal whereby the former owns less and is mostly marginalized from land rights. This study thus looks at the extent to which land redistribution improves the quality of life for women in Buffalo City. The land redistribution program is part of the land reform policy which is a post-apartheid design and implemented for the purpose of redressing historical land dispossession and create redistributive land equality and tenure. This study employed a qualitative approach to ‘explore’ the experiences of women who are the beneficiaries of the land redistribution program as well as the perspectives of key informants who are the officials of the Rural Development and Reform Department. The thesis used an exploratory research design which was suitable for the understanding and unpacking of women's experiences with the land redistribution program. A major finding of this study is that the women who benefited from the land redistribution program have successfully progressed from small scale subsistence farming to large scale commercial farming, significantly improving their livelihoods. Nonetheless, the lack of financial capital is a critical challenge as the land redistribution program gives access to farms that need maintenance and renewal with financial grants that are barely enough for starting up. This study therefore argues that access to land should be accompanied by access to financial resources and capacity building to empower beneficiaries to use the land and other resources effectively and efficiently. Specifically, I am interested in multi-layered and interrelated forms of trauma which exceed the conventional, event-based conceptualization of trauma as an “overwhelming experience of sudden or catastrophic events” (Caruth 1996:11). 1 Such experiences include war, exile, extensive childhood sexual abuse, maternal bereavement and familial disintegration. Investigating the fitness of sea turtles nesting in South Africa

- Description: The South African rookeries of the South Western Indian Ocean (SWIO) loggerhead and leatherback regional management units have been continuously monitored for more than 5 decades, representing one of the longest-running sea turtle beach protection and monitoring programmes in the world. Although such conservation has been successful in protecting adults on land when they come to nest, it might not be enough to ensure population recovery if survival is not ensured across all life stages. Sea turtles are particularly vulnerable to direct threats and changing environmental conditions because they are long-lived, slow maturing, and have low survival rates at early life stages, making them conservation-dependent. These characteristics also render them difficult to conserve as a consequence of their wide geographic distributions, spanning multiple jurisdictions and legislative systems with different conservation targets, and a complex life cycle with changes in habitats and diets at different life stages. Sea turtle populations have been severely depleted as a result of historical over-exploitation and current threats including fisheries bycatch, direct harvest, habitat loss, pollution and pathogens, and climate change. In many cases however, population declines have been reversed by a variety of effective conservation measures such as beach protection programs, and marine protected areas, enabling successful population recovery around the world. Despite protection and apparent increase in abundance, indirect pressures can still affect turtle populations. Therefore, it is fundamental to evaluate the effectiveness of conservation measures (using fitness traits such as female and hatchling sizes) and examine underlying trends. The aim of this thesis was thus to evaluate the fitness of loggerhead and leatherback sea turtles nesting in South Africa. Long-term female size trends over time were evaluated and the populations were split between first-time nesters and experienced nesters. As sea turtle reproductive output (clutch size only) is correlated with female size and evidence is showing that in some populations individual female size is decreasing, the effects of maternal body size on reproductive output and hatchling fitness were investigated for both species. Crawling and swimming speeds were used as proxies of hatchling fitness, because these two traits positively influence their survival. An oceanic model was further used in combination with a particle tracking framework to estimate, for the first time, post-hatchling dispersal of loggerhead and leatherback turtles in the SWIO. I investigated whether the trend in female size for loggerhead turtles nesting in South Africa is a result of their foraging strategy to determine if there is a foraging dichotomy (neritic and oceanic). Despite an apparent increasing population, a significant 3.7 and 3.6 cm decrease in the size of both recruit and remingrant female loggerhead turtles, but a stable mean size of leatherbacks for both age groups was observed. I hypothesise that these contradictory effects are attributable to the very distinct foraging ecologies of the two turtle species and speculate that these variations in carapace length may be driven by environmental change. The reproductive strategy of both loggerhead and leatherback turtles nesting in South Africa supports the optimal egg size theory with larger turtles producing larger clutches but not larger eggs. Egg size was thus constant irrespective of maternal length. Hatchlings with longer carapaces and flippers had higher swimming speed, suggesting that larger hatchlings are fitter (potentially higher survival) than smaller ones by spending less time in high predation risk areas (i.e. beach and nearshore). The model revealed that dispersal trajectories of both loggerhead and leatherback sea turtle hatchlings were very similar and simulations indicated that initial active swimming (frenzy) as well as variability in oceanic conditions strongly influenced dispersal of virtual hatchlings. The trends observed in this study emphasize the importance of long-term monitoring, examining not only abundance but also individual size, to understand population dynamics, support recovery planning and prioritize future conservation practices. Furthermore, the findings of this study have important implications for overall population growth if smaller hatchlings of lower fitness are produced as a result of climate change and thus have decreased dispersal abilities and lower likelihood of survival.

Sea turtles are particularly vulnerable to direct threats and changing environmental conditions because they are long-lived, slow maturing, and have low survival rates at early life stages, making them conservation-dependent. These characteristics also render them difficult to conserve as a consequence of their wide geographic distributions, spanning multiple jurisdictions and legislative systems with different conservation targets, and a complex life cycle with changes in habitats and diets at different life stages. Sea turtle populations have been severely depleted as a result of historical over-exploitation and current threats including fisheries bycatch, direct harvest, habitat loss, pollution and pathogens, and climate change. In many cases however, population declines have been reversed by a variety of effective conservation measures such as beach protection programs, and marine protected areas, enabling successful population recovery around the world. Despite protection and apparent increase in abundance, indirect pressures can still affect turtle populations. Therefore, it is fundamental to evaluate the effectiveness of conservation measures (using fitness traits such as female and hatchling sizes) and examine underlying trends. The aim of this thesis was thus to evaluate the fitness of loggerhead and leatherback sea turtles nesting in South Africa. Long-term female size trends over time were evaluated and the populations were split between first-time nesters and experienced nesters. As sea turtle reproductive output (clutch size only) is correlated with female size and evidence is showing that in some populations individual female size is decreasing, the effects of maternal body size on reproductive output and hatchling fitness were investigated for both species. Crawling and swimming speeds were used as proxies of hatchling fitness, because these two traits positively influence their survival. An oceanic model was further used in combination with a particle tracking framework to estimate, for the first time, post-hatchling dispersal of loggerhead and leatherback turtles in the SWIO. I investigated whether the trend in female size for loggerhead turtles nesting in South Africa is a result of their foraging strategy to determine if there is a foraging dichotomy (neritic and oceanic). Despite an apparent increasing population, a significant 3.7 and 3.6 cm decrease in the size of both recruit and remingrant female loggerhead turtles, but a stable mean size of leatherbacks for both age groups was observed. I hypothesise that these contradictory effects are attributable to the very distinct foraging ecologies of the two turtle species and speculate that these variations in carapace length may be driven by environmental change. The reproductive strategy of both loggerhead and leatherback turtles nesting in South Africa supports the optimal egg size theory with larger turtles producing larger clutches but not larger eggs. Egg size was thus constant irrespective of maternal length. Hatchlings with longer carapaces and flippers had higher swimming speed, suggesting that larger hatchlings are fitter (potentially higher survival) than smaller ones by spending less time in high predation risk areas (i.e. beach and nearshore). The model revealed that dispersal trajectories of both loggerhead and leatherback sea turtle hatchlings were very similar and simulations indicated that initial active swimming (frenzy) as well as variability in oceanic conditions strongly influenced dispersal of virtual hatchlings. The trends observed in this study emphasize the importance of long-term monitoring, examining not only abundance but also individual size, to understand population dynamics, support recovery planning and prioritize future conservation practices. Furthermore, the findings of this study have important implications for overall population growth if smaller hatchlings of lower fitness are produced as a result of climate change and thus have decreased dispersal abilities and lower likelihood of survival.

The influence of the state IT agency’s current performance-based rewards on employee motivation

The organisation’s task is to encourage and nourish these motivated employee inputs by putting effective rewards in place (Markova and Ford, 2011, p. 813.). In view of this, the purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the State IT Agency’s official performance-based rewards and to establish whether these rewards enhance employee motivation. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The study targeted all 86 employees occupying non-managerial positions (Job level A1 – D1) at the State IT Agency – Eastern Cape. The study thus included the entire population. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Collected data was analysed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) for descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of the study were presented in frequency tables, cross-tabulations, histogram and line charts. The study revealed that intrinsically motivated employees are also motivated by financial and non-financial rewards. The research also showed that a statistically significant relationship exists between the number of years in the current position and employee motivation. This study’s results further revealed low levels of employee motivation as well as job dissatisfaction amongst the employees, dissatisfaction with the rewards provided by the organisation and that the State IT Agency is not providing employees with motivational factors perceived by employees as motivational. The study thus concluded that when the State IT Agency rewards outstanding employee performance with a performance-based bonus and a salary increase such employees’ motivation levels should be enhanced. It was recommended that the State IT Agency should design a total rewards strategy for the purpose of maximising the impact of various rewards on employee motivation. The State IT Agency should also focus on eliminating factors leading to employee dissatisfaction before implementing the proposed total rewards strategy because dissatisfied employees cannot be motivated.
