- Description: We report here for the first time, on the comparative studies of the photophysical and optical limiting behavior of our two novel phthalocyanines namely 2(3), 9(10), 16(17), 23(24)-tetrakis-(4-(5-methylhex-1-yn-3-yloxy)) phthalocyanines 2, and 2(3), 9(10), 16(17), 23(24)-tetrakis-(4-(5-methylhex-1-yn-3-yloxy)) phthalocyaninato zinc (II) (3) in solution and thin films. Nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of the samples in solution and contained in polysulfone (PSU) thin films were evaluated using Z-scan technique at 532 nm and 10 ns pulsed duration. Effects of aggregation and disaggregation on the NLO performance of metal-free phthalocyanine are reported in detail. Our findings showed that the prepared Pcs show larger nonlinear absorption coefficient and lower limiting thresholds when embedded in polysulfone films compared to in solutions. The values of nonlinear susceptibility and hyperpolarizability recorded for 3-PSU in this work are respectively, ∼2.09 × 10−8 esu and ∼1.02 × 10−26 esu. These values are among the largest values reported for phthalocyanines and other macrocycles doped on polymer matrices.

- Description: In this work, we investigated the nonlinear optical absorption properties of chloroaluminum, chlorogallium, chloroindium, zinc and lead octaphenoxy phthalocyanines in a dimethyl sulphoxide solution using 5 ns pulses at 532 nm. Using the Z-scan technique, the nonlinear optical properties and the excited state absorption cross-sections were determined by fitting the Z-scan data. The k value was the highest for Pb derivative at 211, making it the best nonlinear optical material. In terms of hyperpolarizability, Pb derivative (containing a larger central metal) also gave the largest value followed by aluminum derivative (containing a small central metal). The distortion of the ring caused by the central metal is used to explain the hyperpolarizability values. Large nonlinear absorption coefficient values, βeff, in the range of 3.558–4.763 × 10-9 cm.W-1 and low saturation fluence values, Fsat between 21.5–38.5 mJ.cm-2, were obtained for these samples.

- Description: The coordination system of rare-earth n-tuple decker phthalocyanines would be better suited with appropriate metal ions with the correct coordination number and the solvent system of the reaction, amongst other reasons, for the formation of n-tuple decker phthalocyanines. As a result, these complexes are very rare. In this manuscript, we present new n-tuple decker phthalocyanines in the form of double- (complex 2), quadruple- (complex 3a) and sextuple-decker phthalocyanines (complex 3b), all of which contain neodymium and cadmium metal ions. The primary focus is the investigation of the nonlinear optical (NLO) mechanisms responsible for the observed reverse saturable absorption. While the extension of the π-electron system has been found to enhance the nonlinear optical behavior of complexes 3a and 3b, a change in the NLO mechanisms has been observed, with complex 2 lacking the triplet state population, as revealed by a laser flash photolysis technique. It has also been established that the excited state absorption cross sections follow a clear order of magnitude for the complexes under investigation: σ23 (for 3b) > σ23 (for 3a) > σ1m (for 2). This trend evidences the effects of the extension of the π-electron system.

- Description: Nonlinear absorption and optical limiting properties of indium phthalocyanine (complex 1) tethered to magnetite (SiMNP-1) or silica (SiNP-1) nanoparticles have been investigated using 10 ns pulses at 532 nm laser excitation. The optical limiting behaviours of the nanocomposites and the bare phthalocyanine are compared. Investigation of the triplet state dynamics revealed highly efficient triplet state absorption in the SiMNP-1 dyad. A large nonlinear absorption (βeff) that increased with decrease in the peak input fluence was observed for SiMNP-1. The SiNP-1 composite showed a slight increase in βeff with decreasing peak input fluence. The nonlinear optical data obtained for the SiNP-1 are within the same range of those of the indium phthalocyanine alone. The nanosecond nonlinear absorption and the optical limiting of the nanocomposites are shown to be dominated by a strong excited state absorption from a two-photon pumped state. Nonlinear scattering effects and strong excited state absorption from a two-photon pumped state account for the enhanced optical limiting behaviour of SiMNP-1 relative to the phthalocyanine alone. , Original publication is available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1039/C4NJ01619J

- Description: We have investigated the nonlinear optical properties, including the optical limiting behaviour for five different concentrations of laccaic acid dye in solution and a thin film obtained through doping in poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) polymer. The experiments were performed by using single beam Z-scan technique at 532 nm with 10 ns, 10 Hz Nd:YAG laser pulses excitation. From the open-aperture Z-scan data, we derived that the laccaic dye samples exhibit strong two photon absorption (2PA). The nonlinear refractive index was determined through the closed aperture Z-scan data. The estimated absorption coefficient β2, nonlinear refractive index n2 and second order hyperpolarizability γ were found to be of the order of 10−10 m/W, 10−9 esu and 10−32 esu, respectively. The Z-scan study reveals that the natural laccaic acid dye emerges as a promising material for third order nonlinear optical devices application. , Original publication is available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.optmat.2015.04.031

- Description: In this article, we report on the linking of cobalt tetrakis (4-pentyn-oxy) phthalocyanine (CoTPPc) to ZnO nanoparticles via click chemistry. Subsequently, electrocatalytic activity and nonlinear optical properties were investigated (the latter using an open Z-scan technique at 532 nm). The linking of CoTPPc with ZnO resulted in the lowest limiting intensity value of 0.27 J.Cm−2, the βeff (cmW−1) values were found to be 1.51 × 10-8 and 7.10 × 104 for ZnO and CoTPPc-ZnO respectively. The catalytic rate constants (M−1s−1) (and limits of detection) were 4.1 × 104 (12.87 µM), 5.7 × 104 (8.62 µM) and 7.36 × 104 (4.35 µM) for ZnO, CoTPPc and CoTPPc-ZnO. Hence linking ZnO nanoparticles to CoTPPc result in the enhancement of both nonlinear optical behaviour and catalytic activity.

- Description: In this article, we explored the photophysical and nonlinear optical (NLO) characterizations of low symmetry phthalocyanine (ZnPc-NH2) covalently linked to MPA-capped AuNPs (ZnPc-NH2-AuNPs) and poly acrylic acid (ZnPc-NH2-PAA). Nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of the samples were evaluated using Z-scan technique at 532 nm and 10 ns pulsed duration. We observed enhanced photophysical and nonlinear optical behaviour for the ZnPc-NH2 in presence of AuNPs. By virtue of the magnitude of absorption coefficients and other NLO optical parameters estimated in this work, ZnPc-NH2-AuNPs was found to exhibit improved nonlinear optical response compared to the ZnPc-NH2 and ZnPc-NH2-PAA. Both ZnPc-NH2-AuNPs and ZnPc-NH2 doped in PAA possess strong nonlinear absorption coefficients and very low limiting thresholds than when measured in solution.

- Description: The nonlinear absorption properties of 6 mono-substituted and 3 symmetric zinc phthalocyanine complexes have been studied in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) using 10 ns pulses at 532 nm. The non linear absorption of the complexes has been studied using the Z-scan technique. The study showed that both the singlet and triplet excited states contribute to the non linear absorption behavior. The nonlinear third-order susceptibility and second-order hyperpolarizability values of the complexes are reported. It was observed that two of the symmetric phthalocyanine complexes (5-α substituted with aminophenoxy and 9-β substituted with carboxyphenoxy) showed better and promising optical nonlinearity when compared to the other complexes studied.

- Description: Three different phthalocyanine complexes substituted with carbazoles were conjugated to graphene quantum dots (GQDs) through π–π stacking. The morphologies, sizes, and crystallinities of the nanoconjugates were determined using Raman spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of the metallophthalocyanines alone and when conjugated to the GQD nanomaterial in different solvents, as well as after having been embedded in thin films, were studied. The effects of the different substituents and solvents on the NLO properties of the metallophthalocyanines were evaluated. Enhancements in the photophysical properties of the complexes upon conjugation with the nanomaterial were observed. Fluorescence quantum yields, fluorescence lifetimes, triplet quantum yields, and triplet lifetimes were measured for the complexes, and for their conjugates in DMSO.

- Description: The development of cobalt(II) phthalocyanine–cobalt(II) tetra(5-phenoxy-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin), (CoPc–(CoTPP)[subscript 4]) pentamer as a novel redox mediator for amperometric enzyme electrode sensitive to glucose is described. A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was first modified with the pentamer, then followed by the immobilization onto the GCE–CoPc–(CoTPP)[subscript 4] with glucose oxidase (GOx) through cross-linking with glutaraldehyde in the presence of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and Nafion® cation-exchange polymer. The proposed biosensor displayed good amperometric respose charateristics to glucose in pH 7.0 PBS solution; such as low overpotentials (+400 mV versus Ag|AgCl), very fast amperometric response time (~5 s), linear concentration range extended up to 11 mM, with 10 μM detection limit. The biosensor exhibited electrochemical Michaelis–Menten kinetics and showed an average apparent Michaelis–Menten constant (K′M) of 14.91 ± 0.46 mM over a storage period of 2 weeks.

- Description: New tetrasubstituted zinc (II) and indium (III) phthalocyanines bearing dimethylamino chalcone group (complexes 3 and 4) as well as their quaternized analogs (3a and 4a) have been assessed for their photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer as well as photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy activities against biofilms and planktonic cultures of pathogenic bacteria of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Compared to the non-quaternized phthalocyanines 3 and 4, the cationic phthalocyanines 3a and 4a exhibit a higher photodynamic inactivation against the planktonic cells with log reduction values above 9 at a concentration of 1.25 µM. This was attributed to the positive charge which enhances cellular uptake. More interestingly, 3a and 4a show a higher photodynamic inactivation (less than 3% of S. aureus survived) on their biofilm counterparts thanks to their stronger affinity to these cells. 3a and 4a Pcs also exhibited interesting PDT activity against MCF-7 cancer cells giving IC50 values of 17.9 and 7.4 μM, respectively following 15 min irradiation. The obtained results in this work show that the positively charged phthalocyanines 3a and 4a are potential antibacterial photosensitizers that show some selectivity toward the Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as MCF-7 breasts cancer cells.

- Description: The syntheses of gallium(III) chloride phthalocyanine {(Cl)GaPc}, octaphenoxyphthalocyaninato gallium(III) chloride {(Cl)GaOPPc} and octakis(4-tert-butylphenoxy)phthalocyaninato gallium(III) chloride {(Cl)GaOTBPPc}; as well as their photophysical and photochemical parameters are hereby presented. Fluorescence quantum yields do not vary much among the three metallophthalocyanines (MPcs); therefore it was concluded that the effect of the substituents is not significant amongst (Cl)GaPc, (Cl)GaOPPc and (Cl)GaOTBPPc. Solvents effects, however, had an effect on the results. Triplet quantum yields were found to be lower in DMSO than in DMF and toluene. The rate constants for fluorescence, intersystem crossing and internal conversion as well as fluorescence and triplet lifetimes are reported. We have also reported photodegradation and singlet oxygen quantum yields. There was no clear correlation between the later parameters. It was, however, established that the three MPcs were stable.

- Description: The syntheses of neodymium(III) 2,9,16,23-tetrakis-(2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenoxy)phthalocyanine (2), bis europium(III) 2,9,16,23-tetrakis-(2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenoxy)phthalocyanine (3), bis dysprosium(III) 2,9,16,23-tetrakis-(2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenoxy)phthalocyanine (4) and their conjugated analogues with nitrogen doped quantum dots (NGQDs) are reported herein. The optical nonlinearity of the sandwich-type phthalocyanine complexes and their conjugates with NGQDs were studied in dimethyl sulfoxide using the open aperture Z-scan technique at an excitation wavelength of 532 nm with a 10 ns pulse. The nonlinear absorption coefficient (βeff) value of the samples ranges from 15 cm GW−1 to 89.6 cm GW−1. Complex 4 and its conjugates afforded a strong optical limiting behaviour compared to the other samples. These fabricated complexes and their conjugates with NGQDs could serve as a plausible nonlinear optical (NLO) material due to their fascinating NLO properties.

- Description: The synthesis of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) using organic compounds as carbon sources via bottom-up approaches has been widely developed, whereas their hybrids with other materials have been previously achieved post-synthetically via multi-step procedures. A novel approach for the preparation of supramolecular hybrid conjugates of GQDs and phthalocyanines (Pcs) via an in situ one-step bottom-up route was employed in this study. The as-synthesized GQDs and their Pc conjugates were characterized using different spectroscopic techniques and their photophysicochemical properties evaluated. Notably, the singlet oxygen quantum yields of the Pcs in the presence of GQDs were found to be 0.51 and 0.74 for 1-GQDs and 2-GQDs, respectively, as compared to the Pcs alone (0.18 and 0.70 for complex 1 and 2, respectively). The increase in triplet quantum yield (ΦT) values is complemented by a decrease in fluorescence quantum yield (ΦF). ΦT value of 0.96 obtained for the complex 2 after conjugation with GQDs is better or higher than the value of 0.74 as reported in the literature when complex 2 was conjugated to semiconductor QDs. Hence, this novel approach resulted in the derivation of hybrid materials with potentials for various photophysicochemical applications such as photodynamic therapy and photocatalysis.
