- Description: The aim of this Code of Conduct for activists is to provide a set of basic guidelines as to how activists and members of our organization should conduct themselves; both inside and outside the organization. We feel that it is important in 2 respects: (i) It highlights the dangers of negative tendencies and the desirability of good qualities. In this way we hope to improve the quality of activists involvement in our organization by providing them with a set of rules and methods that will allow them to achieve their political goals easily and effectively. (ii) Activists represent not only their own organization but the cause of the national democratic struggle in general. As such, the way we behave and conduct ourselves reflects on this cause. Activists must therefore be seen to act in a comradely, disciplined and democratic fashion. It must be pointed out that although this code of conduct applies to all members of our organization it is obviously more relevant to those activists who play an active role in the decision making process, regularly come to meetings and volunteer for the different tasks at hand.

However, some scholars have argued that the sharing of the burdens and benefits of participation is devoid of equity. While some analysts have emphasised the imperative of multi-stakeholder participation in nature conservation, citing this as a crucial socio-ecological investment, others have highlighted the inherent contradictions in the process, describing it as an avenue for manipulation, tokenism and exploitation. This study is located in this debate and focuses on narratives around the participation of different stakeholders in the management of Dwesa-Cwebe Nature Reserve and its adjacent communities in the rural Wild-Coast, Eastern Cape, South Africa. The researcher notes that research on the degrees and participation dynamics among various role players involved in the management of protected areas in South Africa, Dwesa-Cwebe Nature Reserve in particular is limited. Against this background, this study contributes to ongoing discussions on protected area management in South Africa but seeks to expand this discussion by interrogating the nature and degrees of participation within the Dwesa-Cwebe Nature Reserve - to deepen intellectual understanding on the significant role played by protected areas in engendering participatory democracy, equity, justice as well as meeting the needs of marginalised communities. Primary data for the thesis were collected using in-depth and key-informant interviews with officials from government institutions and parastatals, politicians and traditional authority figures. Focus group discussions were held with ‘youth’ participants as well as ‘elders’ in the Reserve’s adjacent communities. An analysis of policy and other government documents sought to outline the institutional attributes of protected areas management in South Africa and the underpinning ideas. A thematic analysis of the corpus of empirical information helped to show how these institutional attributes inhere in Dwesa-Cwebe Nature Reserve as well as the epistemic challenge these attributes pose vis-à-vis indigenous ecological ideas and practices in the adjacent ‘indigenous’ communities. The study revealed that participation is perceived differently by various stakeholders due to multiple, mutually contradictory impulses. While institutional stakeholders attached great importance to the structural role of institutional frameworks, hence the vigorous reliance on formal conservation strategies, narratives from community members drew attention to ‘equity deficits’. The study also found that while the selected Reserve may have fostered cooperation between government and the adjacent communities, conflict and distrust ran deep between these stakeholders. From these and other findings, the study concluded that ecological participation in the study area was characterised by clusters of stakeholders who regard one another as ‘epistemic outsiders’ and related to one another as such, with practical consequences – especially for the long-term sustainability of the Reserve. - Description: To realise the dream of the African Renaissance and a better life for all South Africans, the entrepreneurial energies of all people, including children, should be harnessed to contribute towards economic development, job creation and poverty alleviation. Entrepreneurship creates wealth and results in economic prosperity for a country. However, in South Africa, entrepreneurship still remains a dream yet to be realised. This is supported by the findings of Maas and Herrington (2006), who identified entrepreneurial activity in South Africa to be very weak as evidenced by a low Total Entrepreneurial Activity (TEA) rate. Youths are not engaging in entrepreneurial activity and are making the bulk of the unemployed in South Africa. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the perceived triggers and barriers to youth entrepreneurship in South Africa. Two sets of questionnaires were self- administered to high school students and university students. The respondents which consisted of three hundred and twenty three university students and two hundred and fifty six high school students, were selected using simple random sampling method. Five point Likert scale was used to measure the responses. Descriptive as well as inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. The results indicated that youth entrepreneurial intention is low in South Africa. The results also indicated that students perceived mainly extrinsic rewards, market opportunities as well as intrinsic rewards as the three top triggers towards entrepreneurial intention. Independence/autonomy and capital were also regarded as triggers to entrepreneurial intentions. The barriers to youth entrepreneurship included lack of capital, skill and support as well as lack of market opportunities and risk. The study recommends that in order to encourage youth entrepreneurial intentions, government and all stakeholders should ensure that all the perceived triggers are made available. In this mini-dissertation, a study is undertaken to investigate the effectiveness of the citizen participation in policy implementation at the King Sabata Dalindyebo municipality. The study emanates from the assumption that citizens are not effectively involved in municipal matters. The main objectives of the study are provide a theoretical framework for policy implementation by describing and explaining its nature and place in Public Administration; provide a constitutional framework for citizen participation in South Africa; evaluate the role of citizens in policy implementation in the King Sabata Dalindyebo municipality; evaluate the interaction between citizens, the councillors and the chief officials in the above municipal authority; and where possible, include recommendations for the improvement of citizen participation in policy implementation in the above municipal authority. The study is envisaged as providing possible solution to the ineffective participation of citizens in municipal matters. The study presents an overview of the legislative framework and the role citizens can play. This is followed by the theoretical framework of the policy implementation within the municipal policy process. The singlet oxygen quantum yield values increased in the presence of AuNPs, for complexes 5 and 6. The percentage conversion values for cyclohexene using 5, 6 and 7 were 27%, 20% and 14%, respectively. These values increased considerably in the presence of AuNPs, except complex for 7. The products obtained include cyclohexene oxide, 2-cyclohexen-1-ol, 2-cyclohexene-1-one and 1,2-cyclohexanediol. Low values of singlet oxygen quantum yields favour the formation of 1,2-cyclohexanediol.

The industry’s players are constantly faced with the challenge of finding ways in which to enhance their competitiveness. One of the most important challenges for organisations operating in this industry is to deliver the best service to their customers, hence ensuring they retain customer loyalty, growth and securing future profitability. While a number of competitors may rely on various competitive strategies such as lower prices, it could become increasingly challenging for others to adopt similar approaches without comprising profitability. To overcome this challenge, together with Barloworld, Avis has implemented various employment engagement strategies with the aim of attracting, empowering, and retaining an engaged workforce. Research has shown that employees provide organisations with sustainable competitive advantage. More specifically, it has shown that engaged employees outperform disengaged employees. The differentiating factor for organisations in the pursuit of competitive advantage would therefore be an engaged workforce. In order to remain competitive, Avis realised that their employees area source of competitive advantage. In the year 2013, Avis packaged and introduced EVP as a human resources strategy towards winning an engaged workforce. Some of the objectives for taking on this strategy were to increase job satisfaction and motivation amongst employees and thus result in higher job performance. The main purpose of this study was to measure the impact that the introduction of EVP had on employee engagement at Avis. Introducing a structured EVP plan within this organisation was aimed to increase employee engagement and thus, this study aimed to measure the impact of this intervention. A literature review was conducted to expand on the various definitions of EVP, employee engagement and the elements that influence and impact these variables. This research revealed that engaged employees make positive contributions to key business outcomes such as financial performance, productivity and customer satisfaction. An empirical study was conducted by means of a survey with a questionnaire as data collecting tool. The purpose of the structured questionnaire was to validate the findings obtained from the theoretical overview and to assess employees’ perceptions of the EVP elements, engagement factors and the impact of engagement on the organisational success. The population comprised of 142employeesand 65% a response rate was obtained. The key findings of the study indicated that in general employees are engaged and committed to the vision of the organisation. It also indicated that the introduction of EVP improved the manner in which employees’ viewed their leaders and created a leadership culture that was conducive to the success of the organisation. Furthermore, the study validated the existence of a strong positive relationship between EVP, employee motivation, leadership culture, employee retention, compensation and employee engagement. This research project is an integral component of the ViProMaths project whose goal is to research the effective use of visualisation strategies in the mathematics classroom in the Southern African region. This case study of mathematics teachers in the John Taolo Gaetsewe (JTG) District in the Northern Cape Province, used a social constructivist theory. The study is grounded within an interpretive paradigm and used an explanatory sequential mixed methods design. It surveyed eighty-seven mathematics teachers from all the secondary schools in the JTG District, focusing on their experiences when using visualisation approaches to teach Pythagoras’ theorem word problems. After the survey, three teachers purposively selected from three different schools in the district took part in the intervention programme. I used a survey questionnaire, classroom observations and interviews to collect the data from the study participants. The data were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. The findings from survey data revealed that while teachers in the JTG District acknowledge the importance and value of visualisation strategies in the teaching of Pythagoras’ theorem word problems, many of them are either using visuals minimally or not using them at all. Challenges such as lack of resources in schools, time constrains, a lack of support from subject advisers, among others were noted. This thus necessitated a need for an intervention with some teachers in the district, specifically focusing on the use of visualisation tools and skills to teach Pythagoras’ theorem word problems for conceptual understanding. Lessons observations showed that all observed teachers used visual models to generate images and used the models to develop mathematical ideas. The teachers used the images to create platforms for classroom discussions. The discussions were driven by questions which teachers asked both for ascertaining learners’ prior knowledge and for finding out if they understood what the teachers were teaching. Interviews revealed that teachers’ perceptions had changed because they now know how to make and use different models to build on learners’ prior knowledge, extend what they are teaching to real life and make sense of Pythagoras’ proposition in multiple ways and to establish connections among a rich set of mathematics concepts when teaching Pythagoras’ theorem word problems. This study concludes that the use of visual strategies has the potential of enhancing conceptual teaching of Pythagoras’ theorem word problems. The implications for teachers are that learners need to be taught how to create visual representations (both internally and externally) of the relations between objects in a word problem as this will help them in maximising understanding. Furthermore, it is hoped that the results of this study could be used by various stake holders who include inter alia, mathematics subject advisers and teacher training institutions to improve the teaching of Pythagoras’ theorem word problems.

However, there is less information available concerning the vascular anatomy of monocotyledonous leaves. This is surprising, given that there are two uniquely different phloem systems present in large groups such as grasses and sedges. Monocotyledonous leaves contain marginal, large, intermediate, and small longitudinal veins that are interconnected by numerous transverse veins. The longitudinal veins contain two metaphloem sieve tube types, which, based upon their ontogeny and position within the phloem, are termed early (thin-walled) and late (thick-walled) sieve tubes. Early metaphloem comprises sieve tubes, companion cells and vascular parenchyma (VP) cells, whilst the late metaphloem, contains thick-walled sieve tubes (TSTs) that lack companion cells. TSTs are generally adjacent to, or no more than one cell removed from the metaxylem. Unlike thin-walled sieve tube (ST) -companion cell complexes, TSTs are connected to parenchyma by pore-plasmodesma units and are generally symplasmically isolated from the STs. This paper addresses key structural and functional differences between thin- and thick-walled sieve tubes and explores the unique advantages of alternate transport strategies that this 5–7 million years old dual system may offer. It would seem that these two systems may enhance, add to, or play a significant role in increasing the efficiency of solute retrieval as well as of assimilate transfer.

- Description: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of three critical incidents with a direct effect on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) within the Petroleum retail sector in South Africa. This study assessed three specific areas: (1) the impact of fuel levy increase on Petroleum retailers, (2) explore how fuel stock-outs are experienced by the SMEs, and (3) the effects of fuel distributors' strike on SMEs in the petroleum sector in South Africa. To address the research objectives, the study employed a qualitative research approach, based on a narrative research design. Primary data was collected through semi-structured interviews conducted with six SMEs in the fuel retail business in Johannesburg. An interview guide was used. Findings highlighted that the location of fuel retail SMEs is an important determinant of how the fuel retailers are affected by these three critical incidents of fuel levy increases, stock-outs and strikes. The study found that while the fuel levy increases are felt through reduced sales volumes, the impact is not the same across fuel retailers. The study revealed that the elasticity of demand varies depending on the location for which it is elastics for those retailers in high Living Standards Measure (LSM) locations and inelastic for those located in lower LSM locations. It was found that the impact is much less for those fuel retailers located in affluent suburbs with a high LSM. In locations such as Beyers Naude and Radiokop in Northern Johannesburg with a high LSM, the demand for fuel remains constant irrespective of price increases. The locations are also less likely to be adversely affected by protest actions. Concerning SMEs’ experiences of fuel stock-outs, the study found that stock-outs impact fuel retail business operations through overhead costs that are incurred while the fuel stations are out of stock. The small margins make it impossible for fuel retailers to quickly recover, as their profitability is dependent on sales volumes, which are compromised when there are stock-outs. Fuel retailers also suffer from reduced future sales volumes due to waning customer loyalty. Finally, the study found that the occurrence of wage-related strikes is minimal due to the nature of collective agreements that are signed within the sector. The MLQ survey results indicate that leaders of Sasol Gas have more transformational than transactional leadership styles. The UWES 9 measured the three factors of vigour, dedication, and absorption; dedication had the highest mean compared to vigour and absorption, indicating that Sasol Gas employees strongly identify themselves with their work because it is experienced as meaningful, inspiring, and challenging. This research found a statistically significant, albeit weak, relationship between transformational and transactional leadership styles and employee engagement. This is a positive reflection of the current Sasol Gas leaders because empirical evidence shows that transformational leadership behaviours are more successful for attaining and fulfilling goals during organisational change.

The maintenance of medical equipment is one of the most vital components in quality health care service delivery and it should not be ignored in the hospital. Therefore, it is critical that medical equipment must be maintained, and be in good working condition to ensure it completes its life cycle, also to prevent possible injuries to the patients and clinicians/end-users. Proper maintenance of medical equipment needs compliance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Inappropriate maintenance of medical equipment leads to medical equipment malfunctioning, decreases the level of medical equipment performance, and wastes money and other resources. The equipment downtime makes health care services not accessible to patients. Maintenance includes the following activities, medical equipment acceptance, preventive maintenance, inspection, calibration and repair following the manufacturer’s recommendations. A purposive sampling technique was used to select participants who were knowledgeable and responsible for management of medical equipment maintenance. The participants were experienced clinicians and technicians answerable for medical equipment maintenance and management. The researcher adhered to ethical and trustworthiness principles. Findings The following themes and their related categories emerged as compliance procedures adhered to/applied: i) Determinants of applied procedures; ii) Compliance with maintenance that is facilitate frequent checks, daily regular testing of equipment; iii) Report faulty equipment; iv) Send equipment for repairs; v) Do follow up on repairs; and vi) Keep machines working all the time. Contributory factors to non-compliance included: Unavailability of funds; technical staff shortage; lack of technical training; non-compliance in performance of quality checks; lack of training of end users; lack of set of maintenance plans; and long procurement process. Complications aligned with non-compliance: Inappropriate referral patients; inaccessibility of health care services; and misdiagnosing patients. Recommendations The strengthening of clinical engineering department with human resources (technical staff), finance (funds for spare parts) and physical resources (workspace, testing equipment and tools, service manuals etc.) Prioritise medical equipment maintenance also improvement of maintenance budget allocation and utilization. Provision of training for end users and technical staff. Establishment and implementation of maintenance plan and improvement of procurement processes. Conclusion The selected hospital is partially compliant with the maintenance of medical equipment because the hospital performs only reactive maintenance. It evidently appeared that affected service delivery is initiated by the shortage of technical staff and equipment availability and reliability. The hospital needs to focus and improve on the above mentioned factors affecting medical equipment maintenance. The results showed that improper maintenance of medical equipment contributes to the overcrowding of tertiary hospitals through unnecessary referrals due to medical equipment malfunctioning. Provision of training for end users and technical staff. Establishment and implementation of maintenance plan and improvement of procurement processes. Conclusion The selected hospital is partially compliant with the maintenance of medical equipment because the hospital performs only reactive maintenance. It evidently appeared that affected service delivery is initiated by the shortage of technical staff and equipment availability and reliability. The hospital needs to focus and improve on the above mentioned factors affecting medical equipment maintenance. The results showed that improper maintenance of medical equipment contributes to the overcrowding of tertiary hospitals through unnecessary referrals due to medical equipment malfunctioning. Prestine TiO2 without plasmonic gold nanoparticles yielded an efficiency of 2.4%. However, the loading of 40 nm gold nanoparticles into the TiO2 matrix yielded the highest DSSC efficiency of 6.43% compared to 30 nm (5.91%) and 14 nm (2.6%). The relatively high efficiency demonstrated by plasmonic gold nanoparticles is ascribed to light absorption/scattering, hot electron injection and plasmon-induced resonance energy transfer (PIRET), influenced by the size of the gold nanoparticles.

- Description: The purpose of this study was to asses the challenges facing the Eastern Cape Nkonkobe Municipality in the provision of adequate housing for the poor. The study also aimed at suggesting mechanisms or strategies that could be applied to remedy the situation. It became evident throughout the study that the government has tried its best to fight against homelessness, but there are still thousands of people who do not have houses. The study was conducted through the use of a combination of the qualitative and quantitative research methods. Multiple methods were used with a view to increasing the reliability of observations. Twenty questionnaires were distributed to people at grassroots and ten questionnaires were distributed to the municipal officials. It has been noted in the study that community participation at all government levels is not taken seriously thus the housing problem in Nkonkobe Municipality. It is evident in the study that all the peoples’ projects in this municipality should be people-driven. It has also been pointed out that the service providers take a big slice of the municipal budget. The National Department of Human Settlement must also increase the budget that is allocated to the local municipalities so as to be able to spearhead housing delivery. This study will make a great contribution to the society in that all stakeholders will devise mechanisms to fight against housing challenges in the Nkonkobe Municipality. The municipal officials will devise workable solutions to the housing problem in Nkonkobe.
