- Description: Adjacent binaphthalo-phthalocyanines tetra-substituted with phenoxy (4a), 4-carboxyphenoxy (4b) and 4-t-butylphenoxy (4c) groups, as well as the di-substituted 4-carboxyphenoxy (5b) have been synthesized and characterized. The photophysical and photochemical behavior of 4a-c, were compared with those of the corresponding di-substituted derivatives, (5a-c). The secondary substituents on the phenoxy ring have an influence on the aggregation of the molecules and hence on their photophysical properties. All of the complexes exhibit a relatively good conversion of energy from the triplet-excited state to the singlet oxygen. The less aggregated molecule (4c), has the highest singlet oxygen quantum yield. For all the molecules, fluorescence yields are low and they all have relatively shorter triplet lifetimes compared with the unsubstituted zinc phthalocyanine. Increasing the number of ring substituents on these rigid MPc complexes (from complexes 5 to 4) showed a general increase in the triplet state lifetimes and singlet oxygen quantum yields, and a decrease in stability.

- Description: A new family of thiol-derivatized metallophthalocyanine has been synthesized. The electrochemical behaviors of the complexes have been investigated. The modified glassy carbon electrode using the electropolymerized manganese complex (poly-MnTMPyrPc) was characterized in aqueous solution. The result indicates that the complexes are easier to electropolymerize in dichloromethane (DCM) than in dimethylformamide (DMF). The poly-MnTPyrPc-modified electrode showed pH dependence within the pH range studied (2–8). The cathodic wave of the electrode showed more pH dependence than the anodic wave. Poly-MnTPyrPc could catalyse the reduction of oxygen. , Original publication is available at http://doi:10.1016/j.electacta.2004.12.003

- Description: A stability-indicating HPLC method was developed and validated for the quantitative determination of orlistat in capsule dosage forms. An isocratic separation was achieved using a Perfectsil® target ODS-3, 250 mm × 4.6 mm i.d., 5 μm particle size column with a flow rate of 0.7 ml/min and using a UV detector to monitor the eluate at 210 nm. The mobile phase consisted of methanol:acetonitrile:trifluoroacetic acid (82.5:17.5:0.01, v/v/v). The drug was subjected oxidation, hydrolysis, photolysis and heat to apply stress conditions. Complete separation was achieved for the parent compound and all degradation products in an overall analytical run time of approximately 15 min with the parent compound orlistat eluting at approximately 9 min. The method was linear over the concentration range of 0.02–0.75 mg/ml (r = 0.9998) with a limit of detection and quantitation 0.006 and 0.02 mg/ml, respectively. The method has the requisite accuracy, selectivity, sensitivity and precision to assay orlistat in capsules. Degradation products resulting from the stress studies did not interfere with the detection of orlistat and the assay is thus stability-indicating.

- Description: Photolysis of aqueous solutions of chlorophenols (4-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4,5-trichlorophenol and pentachlorophenol) in the presence of immobilized non-transition metal phthalocyanine photosensitizers onto Amberlite® is presented. The photosensitizers studied are: Al (AlOCPc) and Zn (ZnOCPc) octacarboxyphthalocyanines; Al (AlPcS4) and Zn (ZnPcS4) tetrasulfophthalocyanines; sulfonated phthalocyanine complexes (containing mixtures of differently substituted derivatives) of Al (AlPcSmix), Zn (ZnPcSmix), Ge (GePcSmix), Si (SiPcSmix) and Sn (SnPcSmix). Photolysis of the chlorophenols resulted mainly in the formation of chlorobenzoquinone derivatives. The complexes showed order of activity towards the transformation of pentachlorophenol as follows: ZnOCPc > SiPcSmix > SnPcSmix > ZnPcSmix > GePcSmix > ZnPcS4 > AlPcSmix > AlOCPc > AlPcS4. The generation of singlet oxygen (1O2) by these immobilized MPc photosensitizers was found to play a major role in their photoactivities towards the transformation of these chlorophenols. Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L–H) kinetic model studies showed that the ZnOCPc, GePcSmix and ZnPcSmix photocatalysis occurred on the catalysts surface. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

- Description: Comparative surface electrochemistry and electrocatalytic properties of solid ultrathin monolayer films of metallophthalocyanine (MPc) complexes of cobalt (CoPc), iron (FePc) and manganese (MnPc) self-immobilised, via axial ligation reaction, onto preformed 4-mercaptopyridine self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold electrodes have been described. Surface electrochemical parameters of the modified electrodes showed that these MPc-SAMs are densely packed with flat orientations. The electrochemical, electrocatalytic and stability properties of these MPc complexes follow this order: FePc > MnPc > CoPc. This finding is remarkable as it suggests that the success of using this method of self-assembling of MPc onto gold electrode is largely dependent on the bond distance between the pyridine linker and the central metal of the MPc; the shorter the distance, the faster the co-ordination and the better the electrocatalytic properties towards L-cysteine and thiocyanate. Thus, the superiority of FePc-based SAM over those of the MnPc and CoPc, has been proposed to be the result of the more favorable axial co-ordination properties of FePc with pyridine (i.e. shorter Fe–N(pyridine) bond length.

- Description: Catalytic activity of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of cobalt tetra ethoxythiophene phthalocyanine (CoTEThPc-SAM) complex towards oxidation of thiocyanate (SCN−), L-cysteine (CYS) and 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME) is reported. The oxidation of thiocyanate occurs via a two electron transfer, whereas L-cysteine and 2-ME require 1 electron. The oxidation of thiocyanate is catalysed by ring based processes, while L-cysteine is catalysed by both CoIII/CoII process and by ring based processes. 2-ME is catalysed by CoIII/CoII process. The oxidation of thiocyanate on CoTEThPc was performed in acid media instead of basic media commonly employed. The reaction order was found to be unity for all the analytes, showing that only one molecule of analyte interacts with one molecule of the catalyst during the rate determining step.

- Description: Solution and solid phase electrochemical features of 5-[4-(3,4-dicyanophenoxy)phenyl],10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin complexes of iron(III) (FeCNOTPP(Cl)) and cobalt(II) (CoCNOTPP) have been described. These novel asymmetric dicyanophenoxy-derivatised cobalt and iron porphyrin complexes were electropolymerised onto glassy carbon electrodes, which in aqueous solutions, gave surface concentrations (ca. 10−10 mol cm−2) typical of monolayer coverages. The films also exhibited excellent stability and electrocatalysis towards the direct detection of important analytes as nitrite, nitric oxide, and hydrogen peroxide in aqueous solutions.

- Description: Much work has demonstrated the significant role and value of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) in the livelihoods of rural people in southern Africa and elsewhere. The findings provide a mean or composite picture, averaged across the sample households within each community. Yet, within any given community, there is significant socio-economic differentiation. It is important to acknowledge such differentiation when considering policy and management interventions to support rural livelihoods and promote sustainable resource use. This paper reports on a study in South Africa, the objective of which was to explore wealth-related differences and similarities in the use and value of NTFPs. Data on NTFP consumption, purchase, and sale were collected from households in three rural villages. Households were divided into three wealth classes and patterns of NTFPs use between the classes examined. There was no difference in the proportions of households in each wealth class using NTFPs, nor the total number of NTFPs used per household. Yet, there was some supporting evidence that poorer households derive greater benefits from NTFPs than do wealthy or intermediate households. One clear difference was that, with increasing wealth, households purchased significantly more NTFPs, and a greater proportion of wealthy households did so. Conversely, a greater proportion of poor households were involved in the sale of one or more NTFPs, and they sold a greater number per household, compared to wealthy and intermediate households. Detailed examination of use and value of four NTFPs (fuelwood, wild fruits, edible herbs, and grass hand brushes) revealed that in all instances, the poorest households used more of the resource per capita than the other wealth classes. This was not the case for comparisons based on the total household as the unit of analysis. Gross annual direct-use value did not differ between the wealth classes for any of the four NTFPs examined, at the household level. But on a per capita basis, a significantly higher gross annual direct-use value was evident within poorer households for fuelwood and edible herbs. The significance of these differences is discussed.

- Description: This paper discusses the current resurgence of interest in the Linda coordination language for parallel and distributed programming. Particularly in the Java field, there have been a number of developments over the past few years. These developments are summarised together with the advantages of using Linda for programming concurrent systems. Some problems with the basic Linda approach are also discussed and a novel solution to these is presented. The power and flexibility of the proposed extensions to the Linda programming model are illustrated by considering a number of example applications, including a detailed case study of visual language parsing.

- Description: The synthesis, spectroscopic and electrochemical characterisation of the following oxotitanium tetra-substituted phthalocyanines are reported: 1,(4)-(tetraphenoxyphthalocyaninato)titanium(IV) oxide (5a); 1,(4)-(tetra-tert-butylphenoxyphthalocyaninato)titanium(IV) oxide (5b); 2,(3)-(tetraphenoxyphthalocyaninato)titanium(IV) oxide (6a) and 2,(3)-(tetra-tert-butylphenoxyphthalocyaninato)titanium(IV) oxide (6b). Complexes 5a and 5b are substituted at the non-peripheral (α) positions, whereas complexes 6a and 6b are substituted at the peripheral (β) positions. Cyclic voltammograms of all four complexes are similar, with three reversible reduction couples and three quasi-reversible to irreversible oxidations. The first two reductions are two-electron processes, confirmed by spectroelectrochemistry to be due to TiIVPc−2/TiIIPc−3 and TiIIPc−2/TiIPc−3 redox processes. Spectroelectrochemistry showed that upon oxidation, the molecule decomposes. Oxidation is expected to occur at the ring. Chronocoulometry confirmed two electron transfer at the first and second reduction steps; and a one electron transfer at the third reduction.

- Description: The photodynamic activity of water soluble mixed sulfonated metallophthalocyanines complexes: GePcSmix, SnPcSmix and SiPcSmix on human oesophageal carcinoma (SNO) cells are reported, and compared with the activity of the unmetallated H2PcSmix and of the newly synthesized water soluble adjacently substituted binaphthalo phthalocyanine (complex 3). The alkaline phosphate (ALP) showed damage to the cell membrane in the presence of complex 3 without irradiation. The GePcSmix complex caused a relatively large increase in inflammation and a high intracellular ATP.

- Description: Arbor Day, or Week, is a well-established greening initiative worldwide, focusing on tree planting and the benefits thereof. Frequently most effort is targeted at institutions such as schools and community groups. Yet there has been limited assessment of the success of Arbor Day, or Week, activities both at the schools, or the wider dissemination in neighbouring communities and suburbs. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of school-based Arbor Week activities on learners’ home-based practices regarding tree planting and urban forestry. Learners from three schools in Grahamstown South Africa, with good Arbor Week participation, were assessed on their tree planting knowledge. The learners’ parents were also interviewed to determine whether the information obtained by the learners at school was taken home. A control group consisting of people with no children or very young children was also assessed. This study found that Arbor Week activities were, for the most part, successfully taught in the case study schools, and most of the learners stated that their knowledge of trees and their benefits came from their school activities. However, many learners could not remember the activities in which their schools partook the previous year. Whilst most learners were aware of the importance of trees, few had encouraged tree planting at home. However, over one-fifth of adults claimed that their knowledge of the benefits of trees was as a consequence of Arbor Day activities when they were young. Numerous constraints to tree planting were provided by learners and both the adult groups, the two most frequent being limited space and falling leaves making their yards untidy. External organisations should become more actively involved and provide much needed support systems if greening initiatives are to reach the wider community.

- Description: Cobalt and iron phenylthiosubstituted phthalocyanines have been deposited on Au electrode surfaces through the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) technique. The so formed layers were studied using voltammetric and impedance techniques. These SAMs blocked a number of Faradic processes and electrocatalyzed the oxidation of nitrite. The electrocatalytic parameters of the cobalt and iron phenylthiosubstituted phthalocyanines deposited on Au electrodes in nitrite solution were studied. Nitrite overpotentials which are lower than ever reported were obtained in this work for the iron phenylthiosubstituted phthalocyanines with very high stability.

- Description: This work reports on the electrooxidation of nitrite using Co(II), Fe(II) and Mn(III) tetrakis (benzylmercapto) and tetrakis (dodecylmercapto) phthalocyanines electrodeposited onto a gold electrode. Good catalytic activity (in terms of lowering overpotential) was obtained for these molecules when compared to previously reported MPc catalysts. The catalytic current was found to vary linearly with nitrite concentration in the range employed in this work (0.1–1 mM) and high sensitivities ranging from 6.9 to 9.9 μA mM−1 were observed for all the modified electrodes.

- Description: This work reports on the use of Co(II), Fe(II), Mn(III) and Ni(II) tetrakis benzylmercapto and dodecylmercapto phthalocyanine complexes for gold electrode modification for electrooxidation of sulphite ions. The complexes were successfully used to modify gold electrodes by self-assembled monolayer (SAM) technique. The self-assembled films are stable and showed blocking characteristics towards the following Faradaic processes; gold surface oxidation, underpotential deposition (UPD) of copper and solution redox chemistry of [Fe(H2O)63+]/[Fe(H2O)62+]. All the modified electrodes showed improved catalytic activities than the unmodified gold electrode towards sulphite ion electrooxidation with all the modified electrodes exhibiting high resistance to electrode surface passivation. Better catalytic performance were obtained for the CoPcs, FePcs and MnPcs which have metal based redox processes within the range of the sulphite electrooxidation peak, while the NiPcs which did not show metal based redox reaction performed less. The catalytic current was found to be linear with sulphite ion concentration in the concentration range employed in this work (0.1–1 mM) and sensitivities ranging from 1.68 to 2.96 μA/mM were observed for all the modified electrodes. Mechanisms of the catalytic oxidation of sulphite ions are proposed.

- Description: The comparative photocatalytic activities of aryloxy and arylthio tetrasubstituted oxotitanium(IV) phthalocyanine complexes for the oxidation of 1-hexene in DCM are reported for the first time. The singlet oxygen quantum yield, photostability and photocatalytic properties are investigated. The catalysts effectively catalyse 1-hexene to 1,2-epoxyhexane and 1-hexen-3-ol as major and minor products respectively. The photooxidation products are formed via two reaction mechanisms, namely via singlet oxygen (Type II) and radical (Type I) reaction pathways. These are also dependent on the singlet oxygen quantum yields and photostabilities of the phthalocyanines. Complex 1a that is peripherally substituted with phenoxy groups exhibited the best activity in terms of overall performance.

- Description: One of the challenges in electrochemical biosensor design is gaining a fundamental knowledge of the processes underlying immobilisation of the molecules onto the electrode surface. This is of particular importance in biocomposite sensors where concerns have arisen as to the nature of the interaction between the biological and synthetic molecules immobilised. We examined the use of the Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation (QCM-D) as a tool for fundamental analyses of a model sensor constructed by the immobilisation of cobalt(II) phthalocyanine (TCACoPc) and glucose oxidase (GOx) onto a gold-quartz electrode (electrode surface) for the enhanced detection of glucose. The model sensor was constructed in aqueous phase and covalently linked the gold surface to the TCACoPc, and the TCACoPc to the GOx, using the QCM-D. The aqueous metallophthalocyanine (MPc) formed a multi-layer over the surface of the electrode, which could be removed to leave a monolayer with a mass loading that compared favourably to the theoretical value expected. Analysis of frequency and dissipation plots indicated covalent attachment of glucose oxidase onto the metallophthalocyanine layer. The amount of GOx bound using the model system compared favourably to calculations derived from the maximal amperometric functioning of the electrochemical sensor (examined in previously-published literature, Mashazi, P.N., Ozoemena, K.I., Nyokong, T., 2006. Electrochim. Acta 52, 177–186), but not to theoretical values derived from dimensions of GOx as established by crystallography. The strength of the binding of the GOx film with the TCACoPc layer was tested by using 2% SDS as a denaturant/surfactant, and the GOx film was not found to be significantly affected by exposure to this. This paper thus showed that QCM-D can be used in order to model essential processes and interactions that dictate the functional parameters of a biosensor.

- Description: Electrochemical grafting of 4-nitrobenzenediazonium tetrafluoroborate onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) results in the formation of a nitrophenyl radical, which reacts with the surface to form a covalent bond (grafting) and results in a nitrophenyl modified electrode. The nitro group is electrochemically reduced to a NH2 group. Cobalt tetracarboxyphthalocyanine (CoTCPc) complex is then attached to the NH2 group using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimide (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) as coupling agents. The new CoTCPc modified electrode was characterized using cyclic voltammetry and then employed for the catalytic oxidation of thiocyanate.

- Description: This paper investigates the catalytic activities of arylthio substituted oxotitanium phthalocyanine (OTiPc) complexes that are immobilized on the glassy carbon electrode by electropolymerization, towards the oxidation of nitrite. The complexes are peripherally and non-peripherally substituted with phenylthio and benzylthio groups, namely 1a, 1b, 2a and 2b. All the modified electrodes exhibited improved electrocatalytic oxidation of nitrite than the unmodified electrodes by a two-electron mechanism producing nitrate ions. Catalytic currents are enhanced and nitrite overpotential reduced to ∼0.60 V. Kinetic parameters are determined for all complexes and a mechanism is proposed.
