- Description: Context-aware computing enables mobile applications to discover and benefit from valuable context information, such as user location, time of day and current activity. However, determining the users’ context throughout their daily activities is one of the main challenges of context-aware computing. With the increasing number of built-in mobile sensors and other input sources, existing context models do not effectively handle context information related to personal user context. The objective of this research was to develop an improved context-aware model to support the context awareness needs of mobile applications. An existing context-aware model was selected as the most complete model to use as a basis for the proposed model to support context awareness in mobile applications. The existing context-aware model was modified to address the shortcomings of existing models in dealing with context information related to personal user context. The proposed model supports four different context dimensions, namely Physical, User Activity, Health and User Preferences. A prototype, called CoPro was developed, based on the proposed model, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the model. Several experiments were designed and conducted to determine if CoPro was effective, reliable and capable. CoPro was considered effective as it produced low-level context as well as inferred context. The reliability of the model was confirmed by evaluating CoPro using Quality of Context (QoC) metrics such as Accuracy, Freshness, Certainty and Completeness. CoPro was also found to be capable of dealing with the limitations of the mobile computing platform such as limited processing power. The research determined that the proposed context-aware model can be used to successfully support context awareness in mobile applications. Design recommendations were proposed and future work will involve converting the CoPro prototype into middleware in the form of an API to provide easier access to context awareness support in mobile applications.

- Description: The main purpose of this research is to investigate the Information Architecture (IA) of government web sites in Southern Africa. The government web sites of Mozambique and South Africa were selected for the purpose of this research. A further aim of this research was to derive a model for the IA of government web sites. The model was based on IA components and guidelines as well as on web site components and E-government requirements. The IA guidelines in the model were derived from general design guidelines and guidelines for government web sites. The IA guidelines in the proposed model were used to conduct an analytical and empirical evaluation of the selected sites. The selection of the sites was based on similarities in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) strategies and policies, the annual Internet growth rates, the Internet user profiles and the Egovernment initiatives in both countries. Differences between the sites also contributed to their selection. Mozambique is one of the least developed countries in the world, while South Africa is one of the most developed countries in Africa. Heuristic evaluation was used for the analytical evaluation while questionnaires and user testing were used for the empirical evaluation. Some of the usability problems identified in the heuristic evaluation, such as incorrect organisation of information and navigation issues, were also identified in the empirical evaluation, confirming to the existence of these usability problems. The results of this research show that the IA of government web sites has an impact on user performance and satisfaction and that the proposed model can be used to design and evaluate the IA of government web sites in Southern Africa.

Industry and academia are working intensively to design new techniques that will address all types of driver distraction including visual, manual, auditory and cognitive distraction. This research focuses on an existing technology, namely in-car communication systems (ICCS). ICCS allow drivers to interact with their mobile phones without touching or looking at them. Previous research suggests that ICCS have reduced visual and manual distraction. Two problems were identified in this research: existing ICCS are still expensive and only available in limited models of car. As a result of that, only a small number of drivers can obtain a car equipped with an ICCS, especially in developing countries. The second problem is that existing ICCS are not aware of the driving context, which plays a role in distracting drivers. This research project was based on the following thesis statement: A mobile, context-aware model can be designed to reduce driver distraction caused by the use of ICCS. A mobile ICCS is portable and can be used in any car, addressing the first problem. Context-awareness will be used to detect possible situations that contribute to distracting drivers and the interaction with the mobile ICCS will be adapted so as to avert calls and text messages. This will address the second problem. As the driving context is dynamic, drivers may have to deal with critical safety-related tasks while they are using an existing ICCS. The following steps were taken in order to validate the thesis statement. An investigation was conducted into the causes and consequences of driver distraction. A review of literature was conducted on context-aware techniques that could potentially be used. The design of a model was proposed, called the Multimodal Interface for Mobile Info-communication with Context (MIMIC) and a preliminary usability evaluation was conducted in order to assess the feasibility of a speech-based, mobile ICCS. Despite some problems with the speech recognition, the results were satisfying and showed that the proposed model for mobile ICCS was feasible. Experiments were conducted in order to collect data to perform supervised learning to determine the driving context. The aim was to select the most effective machine learning techniques to determine the driving context. Decision tree and instance-based algorithms were found to be the best performing algorithms. Variables such as speed, acceleration and linear acceleration were found to be the most important variables according to an analysis of the decision tree. The initial MIMIC model was updated to include several adaptation effects and the resulting model was implemented as a prototype mobile application, called MIMIC-Prototype.

The reduction of environmental impact has become a strategic objective of universities globally. Universities have been prompted to take necessary action to ensure that their environmental impact is at a minimum. The environmental component of sustainability deals with the current conservation of the earth’s natural resources so that future generations can also have access to them. Human beings, due to their increasing needs, are accountable for the exploitation of natural resources. They are regarded as the main contributors to imbalances in the natural systems. Environmental concerns such as global warming, deforestations, disposal of wastes, and ozone reduction are the outcomes of the damage caused by humans on the environment. The aim of environmental education is to acquire remediation of the environment by making individuals aware of the environment and by educating them about how to live a more sustainable lifestyle. Environmental awareness is perceived as knowledge of the factors that affect the environment and having sensitivity towards the environment. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) bear the responsibility of educating individuals about environmental issues since they provide education to future leaders in society who may have an influence on future conditions in the environment. Social media are capable of delivering information to a large spectrum of audiences at a low cost. The Pew Internet American Life Project reported that the number of adults who utilise social media has increased by 57 percent from 2005 to 2011. Several environmental activist organisations utilise social media to carry out environmental awareness campaigns. In this study two environmental awareness campaigns which were powered by social media were conducted to improve environmental awareness of individuals in a higher education environment. A Social media Model for ENvironmental Awareness (SMENA) was developed to facilitate the environmental awareness campaigns. The SMENA includes a website, social media as well as theoretical guidelines for creating environmental awareness campaigns, and for using social media for environmental awareness campaigns. A case study at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) was used to empirically evaluate SMENA. Students at the Department of Computer Sciences of NMMU were exposed to information about environmental issues through social media with the intention of improving their environmental knowledge and awareness. The SMENA website usability was rated positively and students enjoyed the blogs and information distributed by means of social media. The results of the study intervention were positive and showed that social media can be used to improve the environmental knowledge of students. This study provides a valuable contribution to both the field of environmental education and social media usage and acceptance. The guidelines and requirements for using social media to improve environmental awareness provided in this study can be used to assist educators and university management with addressing the problems of reducing environmental impact.

Preeclampsia is usually diagnosed after 20 weeks’ gestation. Due to South Africa’s poor level of antenatal care, the prediction of pregnant women at risk of developing preeclampsia can be an essential component of improving the level of antenatal. This study used an antenatal care dataset from a South African obstetrician. A review of the literature and existing systems was conducted to identify the eight risk factors. These risk factors are systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, maternal age, body mass index, diabetes status, hypertension history, nulliparity, and maternal disease. This study used antenatal care datasets from a South African obstetrician. Two models were developed that could accurately predict the development of preeclampsia, one before 16 weeks’ gestation and the other within three check-ups. The model was evaluated using five evaluation metrics: classification accuracy, area under the curve, precision, recall and F-Score. The results of this study show a promising future for the use of machine learning models in health care. To the researcher’s knowledge, this model is the first machine learning model for predicting preeclampsia using a South African dataset. A multi-factor model for range estimation in electric vehicles

- Description: Electric vehicles (EVs) are well-known for their challenges related to trip planning and energy consumption estimation. Range anxiety is currently a barrier to the adoption of EVs. One of the issues influencing range anxiety is the inaccuracy of the remaining driving range (RDR) estimate in on-board displays. RDR displays are important as they can help drivers with trip planning. The RDR is a parameter that changes under environmental and behavioural conditions. Several factors (for example, weather, and traffic) can influence the energy consumption of an EV that are not considered during the RDR estimation in traditional on-board computers or third-party applications, such as navigation or mapping applications. The need for accurate RDR estimation is growing, since this can reduce the range anxiety of drivers. One way of overcoming range anxiety is to provide trip planning applications that provide accurate estimations of the RDR, based on various factors, and which adapt to the users’ driving behaviour. Existing models used for estimating the RDR are often simplified, and do not consider all the factors that can influence it. Collecting data for each factor also presents several challenges. Powerful computing resources are required to collect, transform, and analyse the disparate datasets that are required for each factor. The aim of this research was to design a Multi-factor Model for range estimation in EVs. Five main factors that influence the energy consumption of EVs were identified from literature, namely, Route and Terrain, Driving Behaviour, Weather and Environment, Vehicle Modelling, and Battery Modelling. These factors were used throughout this research to guide the data collection and analysis processes. A Multi-factor Model was proposed based on four main components that collect, process, analyse, and visualise data from available data sources to produce estimates relating to trip planning. A proof-of-concept RDR system was developed and evaluated in field experiments, to demonstrate that the Multi-factor Model addresses the main aim of this research. The experiments were performed to collect data for each of the five factors, and to analyse their impact on energy consumption. Several machine learning techniques were used, and evaluated, for accuracy in estimating the energy consumption, from which the RDR can be derived, for a specified trip. A case study was conducted with an electric mobility programme (uYilo) in Port Elizabeth, South Africa (SA). The case study was used to investigate whether the available resources at uYilo were sufficient to provide data for each of the five factors. Several challenges were noted during the data collection. These were shortages of software applications, a lack of quality data, technical interoperability and data access between the data collection instruments and systems. Data access was a problem in some cases, since proprietary systems restrict access to external developers. The theoretical contribution of this research is a list of factors that influence RDR and a classification of machine learning techniques that can be used to estimate the RDR. The practical contributions of this research include a database of EV trips, proof-of-concept RDR estimation system, and a deployed machine learning model that can be accessed by researchers and EV practitioners. Four research papers were published and presented at local and international conferences. - Description: Electric vehicles (EVs) are well-known for their challenges related to trip planning and energy consumption estimation. Range anxiety is currently a barrier to the adoption of EVs. One of the issues influencing range anxiety is the inaccuracy of the remaining driving range (RDR) estimate in on-board displays. RDR displays are important as they can help drivers with trip planning. The RDR is a parameter that changes under environmental and behavioural conditions. Several factors (for example, weather, and traffic) can influence the energy consumption of an EV that are not considered during the RDR estimation in traditional on-board computers or third-party applications, such as navigation or mapping applications. The need for accurate RDR estimation is growing, since this can reduce the range anxiety of drivers. One way of overcoming range anxiety is to provide trip planning applications that provide accurate estimations of the RDR, based on various factors, and which adapt to the users’ driving behaviour. Existing models used for estimating the RDR are often simplified, and do not consider all the factors that can influence it. Collecting data for each factor also presents several challenges. Powerful computing resources are required to collect, transform, and analyse the disparate datasets that are required for each factor. The aim of this research was to design a Multi-factor Model for range estimation in EVs. Five main factors that influence the energy consumption of EVs were identified from literature, namely, Route and Terrain, Driving Behaviour, Weather and Environment, Vehicle Modelling, and Battery Modelling. These factors were used throughout this research to guide the data collection and analysis processes. A Multi-factor Model was proposed based on four main components that collect, process, analyse, and visualise data from available data sources to produce estimates relating to trip planning. A proof-of-concept RDR system was developed and evaluated in field experiments, to demonstrate that the Multi-factor Model addresses the main aim of this research. The experiments were performed to collect data for each of the five factors, and to analyse their impact on energy consumption. Several machine learning techniques were used, and evaluated, for accuracy in estimating the energy consumption, from which the RDR can be derived, for a specified trip. A case study was conducted with an electric mobility programme (uYilo) in Port Elizabeth, South Africa (SA). The case study was used to investigate whether the available resources at uYilo were sufficient to provide data for each of the five factors. Several challenges were noted during the data collection. These were shortages of software applications, a lack of quality data, technical interoperability and data access between the data collection instruments and systems. Data access was a problem in some cases, since proprietary systems restrict access to external developers. The theoretical contribution of this research is a list of factors that influence RDR and a classification of machine learning techniques that can be used to estimate the RDR. The practical contributions of this research include a database of EV trips, proof-of-concept RDR estimation system, and a deployed machine learning model that can be accessed by researchers and EV practitioners. Four research papers were published and presented at local and international conferences. Forest change analysis was made based on spectral measurements made at top of the atmosphere (TOC) level. When applied to the 2005 and 2009 SPOT 5 images, subtropical forest changes between 2005-2009 and 2009-2013 were quantified. A temporal analysis of forest cover trends in the periods 2005-2009 and 2009-2013 identified a decreasing trend of -3648.42 and -946.98 ha respectively, which translated to 7.81 percent and 2.20 percent decrease. Although there is evidence of a trend towards decreased rates of forest loss, more conservation efforts are required to protect the Wild Coast ecosystem. Using field spectral measurements data, the hierarchical method (comprising One-way ANOVA with Bonferroni correction, Classification and Regression Trees (CART) and Jeffries Matusita method) successfully selected optimal wavelengths for species discrimination at leaf level. Only 17 out of 2150 wavelengths were identified, thereby reducing the complexities related to data dimensionality. The optimal 17 wavelength bands were noted in the visible (438, 442, 512 and 695 nm), near infrared (724, 729, 750, 758, 856, 936, 1179, 1507 and 1673 nm) and mid-infrared (2220, 2465, 2469 and 2482 nm) portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The Jeffries-Matusita (JM) distance method confirmed the separability of the selected wavelength bands. Using these 17 wavelengths, linear discriminant analysis (LDA) classified subtropical species at leaf level more accurately than partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLSDA) and random forest (RF). In addition, the study integrated field-collected canopy spectral and multispectral data to discriminate proportions of semi-deciduous and evergreen subtropical forests at sub-pixel level. The proper development of FMSs allows children to participate in more advanced forms of movements and sports. To be able to perform an FMS correctly, children need to learn the right way of performing it. By making use of technology, a system can be developed that can help facilitate the learning of FMSs. The objective of the research was to propose an effective natural user interface (NUI) architecture for detecting FMSs using the Kinect. In order to achieve the stated objective, an investigation into FMSs and the challenges faced when teaching them was presented. An investigation into NUIs was also presented including the merits of the Kinect as the most appropriate device to be used to facilitate the detection of an FMS. An NUI architecture was proposed that uses the Kinect to facilitate the detection of an FMS. A framework was implemented from the design of the architecture. The successful implementation of the framework provides evidence that the design of the proposed architecture is feasible. An instance of the framework incorporating the jump FMS was used as a case study in the development of a prototype that detects the correct and incorrect performance of a jump. The evaluation of the prototype proved the following: - The developed prototype was effective in detecting the correct and incorrect performance of the jump FMS; and - The implemented framework was robust for the incorporation of an FMS. The successful implementation of the prototype shows that an effective NUI architecture using the Kinect can be used to facilitate the detection of FMSs. The proposed architecture provides a structured way of developing a system using the Kinect to facilitate the detection of FMSs. This allows developers to add future FMSs to the system. This dissertation therefore makes the following contributions: - An experimental design to evaluate the effectiveness of a prototype that detects FMSs - A robust framework that incorporates FMSs; and - An effective NUI architecture to facilitate the detection of fundamental movement skills using the Kinect.

NNRTIs attach to and block an HIV enzyme called reverse transcriptase, by blocking reverse transcriptase; NNRTIs prevent HIV from multiplying and can reduce the amount of HIV in the body. Efavirenz can't cure HIV/AIDS, but taken in combination with other HIV medicines (called an HIV regimen) every day helps people with HIV live longer healthier lives. Efavirenz also reduces the risk of HIV transmission and can be used by children who are suffering from HIV/AIDS. All the above therapeutic uses of efavirenz prompted us to identify the novel and hopefully cost efficient synthetic methodology for the preparation of efavirenz. In this thesis a new synthetic method for asymmetric synthesis of efavirenz is described. This route started from commercially available starting materials and it is first established in traditional batch chemistry and further the parameters transferred to a semi continuous flow protocol for optimization.

A potential biological role for microcystin in photosynthesis in Microcystis Aeruginosa

- Description: Neither the ecological role nor the metabolic function of microcystin is known. Cellular microcystin concentrations correlate to cellular nitrogen status for a given environmental phosphorous concentration and specific growth rate. Microcystin production is enhanced when the rate of nitrogen accumulation exceeds the relative specific growth rate and/or when cellular N:C ratios exceed the Redfield ratio as a function of reduced carbon fixation, suggesting enhanced production of microcystin under carbon stress. Additionally, a strong correlation between medium phosphate and carbon fixation, and the negative correlation between medium phosphate and microcystin combined with the cellular localization of microcystin in thylakoids supports a possible role for microcystin in enhancement of photosynthesis. Batch cultures of both Microcystis aeruginosa PCC7806 and a mcyA- knockout mutant of PCC7806 were therefore cultured at different light intensities and media treatments, so as to vary cellular N:C ratios and concentrations, and sampled for analysis of microcystin concentration, cell numbers and residual medium nitrates. Inter-strain differences in photosynthetic electron transfer rates and levels were monitored using a Hansatech PEA fluorometer and compared to cellular microcystin concentrations. An enhanced survival was observed at high light, where the toxic strain survived while the nontoxic strain became chlorotic. A strong correlation (r2 = 0.907, p< 0.001, N=22) between microcystin concentration and growth rate was observed at high light conditions. No such advantage was observed at optimal or low-light conditions and media composition had no significant effect on the relationship between toxicity and survival at high light. PCC7806 showed elevated PI(abs) values compared to the mcyA knockout strain, which indicates an increased stability of PSII. A strong correlation between PI(abs) and microcystin (r = 0.88, p< 0.005, N=15) was observed for cultures grown in modified BG11 containing 25 mM under continuous illumination of 37 μmol of photons m-2.s-1. No correlation was observed between PI(abs) and microcystin for the other treatments. The toxin producer had significantly higher values for density of active reaction centers and ii quantum efficiency compared to the mutant. A decrease in F0 in the mutant suggests degradation of the phycobiliproteins, whereas PCC7806 didn’t show a significant decrease in F0 Data indicate that microcystins play a role in photosynthesis by preventing chlorosis in saturating light conditions either by enhancing the redox stability of the phycobiliproteins or PS II, thus preventing photooxidation.

- Description: Nodules within the lower Bokkeveld shales often contain well-preserved invertebrate fossil material. The aim of this study was to describe some characteristics seen at various scales (macro-, micro- and ultra -) within nodules that might contribute to an understanding of aspects of nodule formation and the reasons for the excellent preservation of the fossil material within these nodules. Detailed, high quality macro-photographs were taken of sliced and whole nodule surfaces and a catalogue was produced to tentatively identify fossils present and illustrate the variations seen within nodules. Selected nodules were then subjected to petrographic, ultra-structural (SEM) and some chemical (EDS, XRD & XRF) analysis to investigate the possible reasons for these variations. The chemical results have indicated that nodules are enriched with quartz compared to the surrounding shale. Quartz is also the dominant mineral replacing trilobite carapace material within nodules, while trilobite material within shales is replaced with equal proportions of hematite, biotite and quartz. It appears that the higher resistance of quartz to weathering is the dominant factor leading to the preservation of both nodules within the shales and trilobite material within the nodules examined. A comparison with some Western Cape nodules highlighted possible variations in overall nodule chemical composition along strike. Western Cape nodules are predominantly composed of apatite whereas the Cockscomb nodules are mainly composed of quartz. This quartz-apatite compositional variation in nodules occurring within a single formation has been reported from nodules found in the Armorican Massif of France which are very similar in a number of respects to the Bokkeveld nodules described in this study. - Description: Nodules within the lower Bokkeveld shales often contain well-preserved invertebrate fossil material. The aim of this study was to describe some characteristics seen at various scales (macro-, micro- and ultra -) within nodules that might contribute to an understanding of aspects of nodule formation and the reasons for the excellent preservation of the fossil material within these nodules. Detailed, high quality macro-photographs were taken of sliced and whole nodule surfaces and a catalogue was produced to tentatively identify fossils present and illustrate the variations seen within nodules. Selected nodules were then subjected to petrographic, ultra-structural (SEM) and some chemical (EDS, XRD & XRF) analysis to investigate the possible reasons for these variations. The chemical results have indicated that nodules are enriched with quartz compared to the surrounding shale. Quartz is also the dominant mineral replacing trilobite carapace material within nodules, while trilobite material within shales is replaced with equal proportions of hematite, biotite and quartz. It appears that the higher resistance of quartz to weathering is the dominant factor leading to the preservation of both nodules within the shales and trilobite material within the nodules examined. A comparison with some Western Cape nodules highlighted possible variations in overall nodule chemical composition along strike. Western Cape nodules are predominantly composed of apatite whereas the Cockscomb nodules are mainly composed of quartz. This quartz-apatite compositional variation in nodules occurring within a single formation has been reported from nodules found in the Armorican Massif of France which are very similar in a number of respects to the Bokkeveld nodules described in this study. The system was then used to analyse a variety of bulk and thin film semiconducting materials currently being studied in the Physics Department. Silicon wafers were exposed to hydrogen plasma. Raman analysis of hydrogen induced platelets (HIPs), resulting from hydrogen plasma treatment of silicon, is reported. ZnO layers were deposited on glass, GaAs, Si, sapphire and SiC-Si substrates by metalorganic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) in the Physics Department at the NMMU. It was found that the ZnO layers grown by MOCVD all exhibited a strong E2 (high) phonon mode that dominated the Raman spectra. Furthermore, the spectra lacked the A1 (LO) phonon mode which is usually associated with the O-vacancy, the Zn-interstitial, or complexes of the two, indicating that the layers were all of good quality. The influence of depositing the ZnO thin film on a 3 mm thick SiC layer was also investigated and compared with the deposition of ZnO on Si substrate, in order to reduce the lattice mismatch between ZnO and the Si substrate. The possible shift of the Raman peaks due to the residual strain in the film, if present, could not be resolved. Characterization of GaN and AlxGa1-xN produced by MOCVD at the CRHEA laboratory of the CNRS in Valbonne, France is reported. A sharp peak at 567 cm-1 corresponding to the E2 (high) mode of GaN broadens and shifts to higher wavenumbers as the aluminium content of the AlxGa1-xN is increased. The shift is accompanied by a decrease in the intensity and a broadening of this peak. The broadening was attributed to a general decrease in the quality of the layers which accompanies increased aluminium content in AlxGa1-xN.

The conservancy is located in the south-eastern lowlands of the Cape Floristic Region, between the villages of Cape St Francis and Oyster Bay, and is comprised of the properties of multiple landowners. Mutliple Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) techniques were integrated to provide a spatially explicit resource allocation system that considered environmental, social and economic concerns. The MCDA technique selected for use was the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). This technique has a record of providing robust, defensible decisions and enabled the resource allocation decision-problem to be decomposed into a hierarchy of objectives, criteria and indicators. Stakeholders participated in the development of the resource allocation system, especially through providing input into the determination of the relative importance of criteria and indicators through the assignment of weights. Various weighting scenarios were presented and these were interpreted into an ii implementation plan. The costs and effort required to clear alien plants were estimated, and obstacles facing the implementation of the plan were identified.

- Description: Electric vehicles (EVs) have emerged as a viable option to advance sustainable mobility, but adoption is still relatively low. This has been largely due to the limited range one can travel on a single charge, leading to range anxiety, longer charge cycles and long wait times at charging stations. One solution to range anxiety is to erect charging stations on major roads and urban centres. There is also a lack of real-time information regarding the state of charging stations and charging ports in existing charging infrastructure. To increase the benefit of using EVs, using renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaics (PV) to power EVs, can further increase the benefit of reduced carbon footprint. The main research objective was to design a Charge Scheduling Model for charging EVs using a PV-powered smart microgrid (SMG). The model addresses the lack of an integrated platform where EV drivers can schedule when and where to charge their EVs. The model also reduces the negative effects of the adoption of EVs, including range anxiety. The Charge Scheduling Model was developed using the Design Science Research (DSR) methodology and was the main artefact of the study. A literature study was conducted of research related to SMGs, renewable energy, EVs and scheduling, to identify shortcomings that currently exist in EV charge scheduling (EVCS), and to identify the requirements of a potential solution. The literature study also identified the hard and soft constraints that are unique to EVCS, and the available energy in the SMG was identified as one of the hard constraints. Therefore, an Energy Forecasting Model for forecasting energy generated in PV-powered SMGs was required before the Charge Scheduling Model could be designed. During the first iteration of the design and development activities of DSR, four models were designed and implemented to evaluate their effectiveness in forecasting the energy generated in PV-powered SMGs. The models were Support Vector Regression (SVR), K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN), Decision Trees, and Multilayer Perceptron. In the second iteration, the Charge Scheduling Model was designed, consisting of a Four Layered Architecture and the Three-Phase Data Flow Process. The Charge Scheduling Model was then used to design the EVCS prototype. The implementation of the EVCS prototype followed the incremental prototyping approach, which was used to verify the effectiveness of the model. An artificial-summative evaluation was used to evaluate the design of the Charge Scheduling Model, whereas iterative formative evaluations were conducted during the development of the EVCS prototype. The theoretical contribution of this study is the Charge Scheduling Model, and the EVCS prototype is the practical contribution. The results from both evaluations, i.e. the Energy Forecasting Model and the Charge Scheduling Model, also make a contribution to the body of knowledge of EVs.

The structural and sedimentological characteristics have been documented, and a detailed description and facies outcrop characterization of the Collingham Formation has been undertaken. The combined thickness of the Prince Albert (~55m), Whitehill (~12m), and Collingham (~20m) Formations is approximately 85m. These formations are composed of fine grained parallel laminated mudrocks of mostly silt- and clay-size particles. A general north-easterly dip direction is recorded with three prominent joint directions striking NNE, NNW, and ESE. Intense small scale folding is evident in the Whitehill Formation, and is likely linked to local décollement structures; while north-verging duplex faults in the Prince Albert Formation is possibly linked to a sole thrust/detachment fault rooted in rocks of the Cape Supergroup. The foreland model has been proposed for these deformational structures. Six lithofacies have been recognised in the Collingham Formation, namely; claystone facies, mudstone facies, siltstone facies, chert facies, tuff facies, and shale facies. The Collingham Formation is comprised of an upward fining sequence of sediments; seen from the gradual change from siltstone facies in the lower layers, to mudstone facies, and claystone facies in the upper layers. This was created in a delta environment whereby clay particles were held in suspension in a hypopycnal mouth bar, and slowly settled to form claystone facies. An influx of sediment caused silt particles to settle further out to sea under the influence of gravity in a hyperpycnal mouth bar, thereby forming siltstone facies. Mudstone facies formed as the sediment supply gradually depleted, subsequently reducing the concentration of silt particles. The dominance of clay particles present suggests deposition to have occurred in tranquil waters, in a possible intracratonic basin setting, where the water depth is known to be a lot shallower. An upward decrease in organic content is seen by the colour change of mudrocks from dark grey near the base to dark green grey in the upper layers. Chlorite is commonly found in thin section, SEM, and XRD, and is an indication that the formation was later subject to low grade greenschist facies metamorphism.

A seismic characterization of the crustal structure underlying the offshore Natal valley within the south-west Indian Ocean

- Description: The Natal Valley is a ~1000 km long, elongated depression in the seafloor, located within the south-west Indian Ocean, between the coastline of south-east Africa and the offshore aseismic Mozambique Ridge. Knowledge of its present-day crustal structure is important to reconstruct the Gondwana supercontinent break-up history and the concurrent opening of the Indian Ocean, which started during the Jurassic, some ~180 – 150 million years ago. Major geological events relating to this supercontinent break-up including continental rifting, magmatism, the emplacement of extensive oceanic flood basalt as submarine plateaus, vertical processes associated with tectonic uplift, flexural subsidence of the margin and relative global sea-level change are recorded within the crust underlying the south-west Indian Ocean. Although these events have been well modelled, fundamental questions remain regarding the nature and tectonic structure of the crust. Today, the Natal Valley region represents a frontier for geophysical exploration. Early attempts at imaging the crust beneath the seafloor within the south-west Indian Ocean made use of now primitive seismic reflection data acquisition and processing techniques available to them at the time (1960’s - 1970’s). Considering the advancements made in marine seismic reflection imaging, these vintage datasets lacked the horizontal and vertical resolution necessary to most accurately account for and describe features of the upper crust underlying the northern Natal Valley. This study is based on the acquisition, processing and preliminary interpretation of a newly acquired, regional seismic reflection profile, Profile Mz5-007, acquired across the northernmost region of the Natal Valley during the PAMELA-Moz5 cruise in 2016. The methods of marine seismic reflection data acquisition, processing and interpretation are described. The seismic reflection data presented in this dissertation provides a regional-scaled appraisal of the upper crust underlying the northern Natal Valley for the first time. The imagery allows a comprehensive description of crustal structures and features from the very northern Natal Valley, close to the Mozambique coastline, southwards into the southern Natal Valley offshore of Durban. The findings presented here support the notion that the crust underlying the northern Natal Valley experienced roughly N-S orientated trans-tensional stresses in relation to the breakup of West Gondwana. At least two major phases of volcanism are imaged within the seismic stratigraphy. The lower-most event underlies the Limpopo Fan in the northernmost regions of the Natal Valley at a depth of 2 seconds TWT and is interpreted as a seismic expression of the upper surface of the Lower – Middle Jurassic Karoo LIP. The progressive disappearance of this horizon towards the south coincides with the emergence of a second, overlying, as yet unreported volcanic horizon, which extends southwards throughout the Natal Valley. On the basis of its regional distribution, spatial relationship with the underlying event boundary and its deformation history, this volcanic horizon is interpreted to represent a series of basaltic lava outpourings during the Lower Cretaceous, initiated in response to trans-tensional crustal deformation associated with the breakup of West Gondwana. In addition to these two major phases of flood basalt outpouring, a number of localized volcanic flows are imaged throughout the stratigraphy, most notably over the Central Terrace. In addition, at least four major unconformities are identified, all of which are well developed within the Limpopo Fan. One of these is interpreted to represent the well-developed Mid-Cretaceous hiatus in sedimentation, providing a relative seismo-stratigraphic constraint to overlying and underlying seismic units. A review of the structural elements of the crust reveals how the northern Natal Valley is partitioned into two sub-basins separated by a prominent basement high, the Central Terrace, imaged across the central portions of Profile Mz5-007. To the north of the Central Terrace, structural deformation appears largely extensional, characterized by a large (~37 km wide) asymmetrical depression directly to the north of the Central Terrace and only minor structural faulting. To the south of the Central Terrace, trans-tensional stresses associated with withdrawal of the Falkland Malvinas Plateau have deformed the upper crust into a series of apparently southwards tilted crustal blocks, producing a series of deep (3.5 s TWT) half graben-like structures, within which syn-rift fill has an apparent dip towards the south. There is evidence to suggest ongoing reactivation of these fault structures. This zone of deformation is shown to bear resemblances to the faulting mapped onshore of the Kwa-Zulu Natal coastline, providing reason to consider the two regions as a continuous zone of deformation associated with the withdrawal of the Falkland-Malvinas Plateau during the breakup of West Gondwana. - Description: The Natal Valley is a ~1000 km long, elongated depression in the seafloor, located within the south-west Indian Ocean, between the coastline of south-east Africa and the offshore aseismic Mozambique Ridge. Knowledge of its present-day crustal structure is important to reconstruct the Gondwana supercontinent break-up history and the concurrent opening of the Indian Ocean, which started during the Jurassic, some ~180 – 150 million years ago. Major geological events relating to this supercontinent break-up including continental rifting, magmatism, the emplacement of extensive oceanic flood basalt as submarine plateaus, vertical processes associated with tectonic uplift, flexural subsidence of the margin and relative global sea-level change are recorded within the crust underlying the south-west Indian Ocean. Although these events have been well modelled, fundamental questions remain regarding the nature and tectonic structure of the crust. Today, the Natal Valley region represents a frontier for geophysical exploration. Early attempts at imaging the crust beneath the seafloor within the south-west Indian Ocean made use of now primitive seismic reflection data acquisition and processing techniques available to them at the time (1960’s - 1970’s). Considering the advancements made in marine seismic reflection imaging, these vintage datasets lacked the horizontal and vertical resolution necessary to most accurately account for and describe features of the upper crust underlying the northern Natal Valley. This study is based on the acquisition, processing and preliminary interpretation of a newly acquired, regional seismic reflection profile, Profile Mz5-007, acquired across the northernmost region of the Natal Valley during the PAMELA-Moz5 cruise in 2016. The methods of marine seismic reflection data acquisition, processing and interpretation are described. The seismic reflection data presented in this dissertation provides a regional-scaled appraisal of the upper crust underlying the northern Natal Valley for the first time. The imagery allows a comprehensive description of crustal structures and features from the very northern Natal Valley, close to the Mozambique coastline, southwards into the southern Natal Valley offshore of Durban. The findings presented here support the notion that the crust underlying the northern Natal Valley experienced roughly N-S orientated trans-tensional stresses in relation to the breakup of West Gondwana. At least two major phases of volcanism are imaged within the seismic stratigraphy. The lower-most event underlies the Limpopo Fan in the northernmost regions of the Natal Valley at a depth of 2 seconds TWT and is interpreted as a seismic expression of the upper surface of the Lower – Middle Jurassic Karoo LIP. The progressive disappearance of this horizon towards the south coincides with the emergence of a second, overlying, as yet unreported volcanic horizon, which extends southwards throughout the Natal Valley. On the basis of its regional distribution, spatial relationship with the underlying event boundary and its deformation history, this volcanic horizon is interpreted to represent a series of basaltic lava outpourings during the Lower Cretaceous, initiated in response to trans-tensional crustal deformation associated with the breakup of West Gondwana. In addition to these two major phases of flood basalt outpouring, a number of localized volcanic flows are imaged throughout the stratigraphy, most notably over the Central Terrace. In addition, at least four major unconformities are identified, all of which are well developed within the Limpopo Fan. One of these is interpreted to represent the well-developed Mid-Cretaceous hiatus in sedimentation, providing a relative seismo-stratigraphic constraint to overlying and underlying seismic units. A review of the structural elements of the crust reveals how the northern Natal Valley is partitioned into two sub-basins separated by a prominent basement high, the Central Terrace, imaged across the central portions of Profile Mz5-007. To the north of the Central Terrace, structural deformation appears largely extensional, characterized by a large (~37 km wide) asymmetrical depression directly to the north of the Central Terrace and only minor structural faulting. To the south of the Central Terrace, trans-tensional stresses associated with withdrawal of the Falkland Malvinas Plateau have deformed the upper crust into a series of apparently southwards tilted crustal blocks, producing a series of deep (3.5 s TWT) half graben-like structures, within which syn-rift fill has an apparent dip towards the south. There is evidence to suggest ongoing reactivation of these fault structures. This zone of deformation is shown to bear resemblances to the faulting mapped onshore of the Kwa-Zulu Natal coastline, providing reason to consider the two regions as a continuous zone of deformation associated with the withdrawal of the Falkland-Malvinas Plateau during the breakup of West Gondwana. The main research objective was to develop a Smart Home Environment (SHE) that can support risk and safety monitoring for the elderly living independently. An unobtrusive and low cost SHE solution that uses a Raspberry Pi 3 model B, a Microsoft Kinect Sensor and an Aeotec 4-in-1 Multisensor was implemented. The Aeotec Multisensor was used to measure temperature, motion, lighting, and humidity in the home. Data from the multisensor was collected using OpenHAB as the Smart Home Operating System. The information was processed using the Raspberry Pi 3 and push notifications were sent when risk situations were detected. An experimental evaluation was conducted to determine the accuracy with which the prototype SHE detected abnormal events. Evaluation scripts were each evaluated five times. The results show that the prototype has an average accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of 94%, 96.92% and 88.93% respectively. The sensitivity shows that the chance of the prototype missing a risk situation is 3.08%, and the specificity shows that the chance of incorrectly classifying a non-risk situation is 11.07%. The prototype does not require any interaction on the part of the elderly. Relatives and caregivers can remotely monitor the elderly person living independently via the mobile application or a web portal. The total cost of the equipment used was below R3000.

For governments, SMA holds the promise of providing tools and frameworks to collect, monitor, analyse and visualise social media data, usually driven by specific requirements from a target application. However, social media data is noisy and unstructured, and organisations struggle to extract knowledge from this data, and convert it into actual intelligence. This study argues that SMA can support intelligent decision-making for Citizen Relationship Management (CzRM). CzRM is a growing effort of governments around the world to strive to respond rapidly to their citizens by fostering a closer relationship thereby creating more effective and efficient service delivery. However, there is a little evidence in literature on empirical studies of any existing decision-making framework for CzRM and SMA adoption. In particular, there is a gap with regards incorporating SMA into decision-making for CzRM of governments, particularly in developing countries like South Africa. The aim of this study was to develop a framework that provides guidelines, including methods and tools, incorporating SMA into decision-making for CzRM in the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) and the Free State Provincial Government (FSPG) of South Africa. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and conceptual analysis method was conducted to design the Social Media Analytics Framework for Decision-making in the context of CzRM (the SMAF). The findings from the literature review revealed several benefits and challenges with SMA, in particular the shortage of skills, guidelines, methods and tools for SMA. These challenges were used to draft guidelines that were included in the framework, which consists of five components that can be used to derive intelligent information from SMA. The pragmatic philosophy and a case study design was used to generate an in-depth, multifaceted understanding of the underlying problems in the case of the GPG and the FSPG. The German North-West Metropolitan region was used as a third case study to provide a more global perspective and a case of a developed country in terms of Gross Domestic Product. The scope of the study was limited to social media posts by provincial citizens related to CzRM and service delivery. Both formative and summative evaluations of the proposed theoretical framework were conducted. The formative evaluation was conducted v | Page as an Expert Review to receive feedback of the framework from the experts in the field of Computer Science and Information Systems. The findings validated the framework and some minor improvements were made based on the experts’ recommendations. Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with participants from government managers and decision makers in the three cases were conducted. Case documents for the three cases were collected and reviewed. All collected data was analysed using the Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) method and common categories and themes were identified. Summative evaluations were conducted in the form of a Field Study, which consisted of an analysis of Twitter data from the three cases, and a closing FGD with Business Intelligence (BI) experts at the primary case of the e-Government department of the GPG. The findings revealed that SMA has been adopted in all three cases; however, while their strategies are comprehensive their implementations are very much in their early stages.
