The nature of postgraduate student-supervisor relationship in the completion of doctoral studies in education: an exploration in two African universities

Production of more PhDs in Africa is of great significance, seeing that there is a growing need for highly trained researchers to support the national social, economic and environmental goals of African countries. However, statistics show that the completion rate of doctoral studies in Africa is still very low. As such, the focus of this study was to explore the nature of the student-supervisor relationship in the completion of educational doctoral studies in two African universities, namely, Nelson Mandela University in South Africa and Moi University in Kenya. In order to answer the main research question: “What is the nature of the student-supervisor relationship as experienced by graduates who recently completed their educational doctoral studies in two African universities?” a qualitative approach was used, located within an interpretivist paradigm and positioned as an intrinsic interpretive case study. Convenient and purposive sampling was utilised to select participants who had recently completed their doctoral studies in education within the last five years. An individual semi-structured interview and drawings were used to generate the data with ten participants, five from each of the two Universities. The data was analysed thematically and the model for interpersonal supervisor behaviour of Mainhard, Roeland, Tarkwijk and Wubbels (2009), was used to make meaning of the findings. The findings were discussed under four areas, namely, expectations of the student-supervisor relationship, experiences of the student-supervisor relationship, negotiating the student-supervisor relationship and perceptions of the student-supervisor relationship in the successful completion of doctoral studies. These findings revealed that there were moments of cooperation or opposition, as well as instances of dominance or submission in the student-supervisor relationship. However, it appeared that negotiation was at the centre of the relationship, as it was evident that it strengthened the affiliation between the student and the supervisor and thus created a harmonious working relationship, while the lack of proper negotiation created discontent and opposition between the student and the supervisor. The conclusions from the findings were used to generate implications which could be helpful to university management in improving postgraduate supervision and in so doing, promote the success rate of doctoral studies in African universities.

- Description: The high levels of violence that plague South Africa’s universities are symptomatic of an education system that is under attack, with institutions of higher learning not reflecting the peacefulness and safety which are oftentimes associated with the pursuit of learning. While violence in societies and educational institutions globally continues to intensify in viciousness and frequency, this is especially worrisome for South Africa, a country regarded as one of the most violent in the world. South African education institutions are admittedly extremely violent, yet there are relatively few mechanisms to enable the verification of trends in violence, or to cross-reference and compare incidents, thus making the reduction of violence problematic. The contention is that the general outlook of violence at educational institutions appears to echo the relentless violence which haunts South African communities in general. Against this background, the current study sought to explore the nature of violence in South African universities. To achieve this, the study was guided by an exploration of student and staff experiences of violence in universities, the causes of violence in such sites, and the recording thereof. Underpinned by a pragmatist paradigm, this study utilised a mixed-methods approach to ‘get under the skin’ of the problem of violence in universities. Within the mixed-methods approach, the study employed a single-phase convergent design, which enabled the researcher to reach comprehensive conclusions on violence in universities, by merging and comparing qualitative and quantitative datasets. In the quantitative phase of the study, a simple random sampling technique was used to select a total of 1 776 students and 250 staff, while 32 students and four staff were conveniently sampled during the qualitative phase. The data for this study were collected using an online survey in the quantitative phase, and semi-structured interviews and document reviews in the qualitative phase. The findings of this investigation revealed that violence happened in six main configurations, namely student-on-student violence, staff-on-student violence, staff-on-staff violence, student-on-staff violence, self-directed violence, and protest-related violence. In addition, the findings revealed diverse causes of violence in universities, chief of which were alcohol and drug abuse, poor security, the abuse of power or authority, impunity, and psychosocial factors, among others. Factors that impeded the recording of violence in universities included the normalisation of violence, a lack of consequences for the perpetrators, a lack of procedural awareness, cronyism and brotherhoods, and a lack of protection from reprisal for reporting perpetrators. The production of violence in South African universities was also found to be significantly shaped by wider structures that included sexuality, gender, age, socioeconomic status, and race and ethnicity. These structures were found to be prominent in increasing the likelihood of violence being perpetrated. Based on the reported findings, the study moved to recommend that, in order to reduce experiences of violence in South African universities, institutions adopt multidimensional approaches to combatting this scourge. The fact that violence was noted to occur in multiple configurations, means multiple viewpoints are required to reduce and ultimately combat it. This calls for a multi-stakeholder approach that transcends a reliance on the traditional university policymakers, and a concerted consultative process to formulate and renew policies that can help to address university violence. The study further recommended that reporting structures be decentralised at universities, in a bid to improve the smoothness of related processes. In this respect, it will be essential for universities to consider setting up anonymous reporting platforms online, to move with the times and ensure more urgent responses, as opposed to a continued reliance on present systems that are replete with red tape. Additionally, universities may consider outsourcing divisions that deal with violence reporting, to minimise conflicts of interest when dealing with such cases. The researcher concluded that violence in universities threatens the very purpose of tertiary education – members of the university community must be able to freely pursue their aspirations in peaceful environments. As such, for as long as campuses experience violence in any of its varied forms, a proverbial dark cloud will forever frustrate the quest for quality and transformative education that has the potential to reverse-engineer inequality, poverty, and underdevelopment in South Africa, as contemplated in various development plans. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Education, 2021

- Description: Despite the current widespread implementation of inclusive education into the South African educational system, it appears that little, if any, studies have been undertaken as to whether South African educators are adequately equipped to manage the changes that will be required with the implementation of this new approach to education. More specifically, whether our educators would be more aptly prepared for the many adaptations should they be in possession of a remedial qualification. This study is aimed at providing a detailed account of the implications of introducing inclusive education into the South African school system, with particular focus being placed on learners who present with barriers to learning as well as the essential curriculum, classroom and teaching adjustments required in order for these learners to reach their full potential within a mainstream classroom environment. The sample for this study firstly comprised of educators’ perceptions regarding their capabilities in coping with the demands of inclusive education. The viewpoints of 122 educators, within the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan area of the Eastern Cape, were recorded through the completion of individual questionnaires and interviews. Secondly, the files of 111 learners, from a remedial practice, who presented with barriers to learning were analysed to determine the effectiveness of appropriate remedial intervention in overcoming the respective barriers. The major findings of the present study were as follows: Many classroom modifications, changes in teaching styles and curriculum adaptations would have to be implemented to adjust to the demands of inclusive education; Educators would have to be trained regarding the different categories of learners with barriers to learning and their special educational needs; The majority of Eastern Cape educators do not feel suitably qualified to cope with the demands of inclusive education; Educators in positions of authority (principals, deputy principals and heads of department) indicated their inadequacies regarding coping and assisting parents and fellow educators with the demands of inclusive education; A large percentage of the responding educators indicated that they would be better suited to cope with the demands of inclusive education with a remedial qualification and were prepared to register at a tertiary institution to obtain such a qualification depending on certain incentives offered by the Education Department. In view of the findings of this study, recommendations have been made to enhance the current qualification levels of educators, to specifically include a remedial qualification, of which guidelines have been provided. This approach should vastly assist educators in coping with the demands of inclusive education and will ensure that they are suitably empowered to meet the needs of learners with barriers, who have been thrust into this system. Guidelines are also offered for a proposed remedial course that could be offered to education students as well as to those educators who are presently in the employ of the Education Department.

- Description: The present study investigates the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) Mathematics curriculum Design issues which have a bearing on underachievement at Grade 12 in selected schools in the King Williamstown Education District. It stems from the premise that curriculum design is plausible explanation for Mathematics achievement. In pursuit of this line of thought, the study looked at curriculum design types such as linear, sequential, and spiral arrangement of contents, as well as curriculum design aspects such as sequencing, progression, integration, pacing and organisation of contents. The study also looked at the perceptions educators and subject advisors have with respect to the bearing that these aspects have on underachievement in Mathematics. The interpretive paradigm was used to frame and focus the study. The sample included five schools selected on purpose, with underperformance in Mathematics as an inclusion criterion. These schools constituted the cases of this research. Data was obtained from the interviews which were conducted with the Mathematics educators of the selected schools, and the Mathematics subject advisor of the district to find out about their perceptions with regard to the impact of Mathematics curriculum design on students’ underachievement in Grade 12. In addition, the contents of the National Curriculum Statement for Mathematics documents were analysed. The findings revealed that the scope (contents coverage) is too wide, and that the skills which are supposed to be developed in learners per term are not fully developed. Time allocation is unreasonably limited as a result learners are unable to cover the scope for the term. Revisiting of topics done every year in a spiral fashion is good but the balance between superficiality and depth is not achieved, and that it is done without checking and understanding learners’ previous knowledge on the topic. The sequencing of certain topics has to be looked into and revised. The study also revealed that Mathematics curriculum design, link and progression from primary to high school is good but not all details covered which leave students with content gaps that impede the learning of certain topics. The researcher came out with the following recommendations: From this case study, it appears that teachers still need more empowerment in NCS. Educators still need training on the NCS so they can be confident with the Mathematics NCS content. In most schools the scope is not covered and skills that are supposed to be developed in learners every term are not developed because of slow learners and the time factor. Therefore, the Department of education needs to give the scope taking into consideration the slow learners and make sure that the time they give every term also takes into consideration the time used for tests. It also appears that the learners are slow because of the language barrier. Educators spend a lot of time saying the same things to the learners so that they can understand. Since the learners do almost all the subjects in English and write their examination in English if they are from an English medium school, it would be a good idea for the DOE to introduce English to the learners as early as grade R, as in the model C schools. If that is done, it might remove the language barrier and hence reduce underachievement in Mathematics. It appears that the educators revisit topics every year but do not balance superficiality and depth. Educators should be encouraged to take every topic seriously every year and not just repeat what they covered in the previous grade. They should use it as a base for the new content. If that is done, it might help the achievement in Mathematics.

- Description: This study focused on the perception of School Management Teams and Teachers about their role to implement the national school nutrition programme in the Sisonke District in KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa). The national school nutrition programme like any other projects in the country, faces some changes in the District which seem to interfere with the role of stakeholders in implementing the programme. This study explored the following research question with the set of secondary research questions: What are the perceptions of School Management Teams and Teachers in the Sisonke District of KwaZulu-Natal about their role in National School Nutrition Programme? • What perceptions do teachers and school managers have on the implementation of National School Nutrition Programme? • What challenges do Teachers and School Managers have to enhance the objectives of the National School Nutrition Programme? Both Teachers and School Managers were conveniently and purposively selected. For the generation of data, semi-structured interviews were used which were tape-recorded which were followed by transcription of data with interim analysis. Data was also generated through the use document analysis. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data, which was theoretically framed by Maslow’s theory of motivation, Hertzberg two-factor motivation theory, Lawler and Porter’s Expectancy theory of motivation and the Situational theory of Hersey and Blanchard through which, I lens the study and managed to explain the findings. The study findings revealed that most Teachers and School Managers perceived national school nutrition programme as an important programme in the context of Umzimkhulu as it isa deep rural area. Despite the positive perceptions of Teachers and School Managers about their role, the study findings further revealed that they are facing some challenges in the implementation of the programme. The findings have several implications for poverty alleviation in the Sisonke District, job creation and improved learner’s attendance, improved health conditions of learners. They also highlighted the weaknesses of the DBE official’s nutrition sub-directorate about role players of the programme. Qualitative research is best suited to studies of this sort, as it provides the means to conduct an in-depth investigation of the thoughts, beliefs, attitudes and responses of teachers concerning the teaching of Mathematical Literacy at the FET level. Despite this practice in class, learners are expected to answer their test and examination questions in English. Theoretically, this study is underpinned by the constructivist view of language learning (Gaserfeld, 2003) and English as an international language (Sivasubramaniam, 2011). On the basis of the ecological and the constructivist approaches to language learning, Sivasubramaniam (2011 p.53) views language as a creative instrument of meaning which ‘has the power to create meaning anew and afresh’ each time that someone uses it. The study makes use of the qualitative research method with a case study design that is placed within the interpretive paradigm. The data collected will be analysed through the use of critical discourse analysis. The findings from the study suggest some instrumental motivations to use English as LOLT which is informed by Language policy. Some of these motivations are: studying abroad, business with foreign investors and integrative motivations as the learner will be able to communicate with people from different countries. The study concludes that there is need for schools to stick to the English medium because this acts as an open door to the upward economic mobility among the previously disadvantaged. Based on this, it can be recommended that schools stick to English first additional language as their language of teaching and learning.

The potential for concept cartoons to assist natural sciences teachers with developing scientific jargon for primary school learners

The focal aim was to search for a fun, captivating, educational resource that would cater for these learners’ barriers to science learning. This research falls within a constructivist worldview, and the research method employed was a case study. Data were collected through qualitative approach, via semi-structured interviews. A total of nine participating Intermediate Phase Natural Sciences teachers from the Port Elizabeth Northern Areas schools contributed towards the findings of this study. This study was an investigation undertaken to see whether a different teaching approach may encourage change. The findings of this study suggested that Concept Cartoons used in Natural Sciences investigations created an educational effect towards the learners understanding of science concepts. Intermediate Phase learners were introduced to Concept Cartoons to assist with their understanding of science terminology during practical investigations. The results of this investigation suggested that Concept Cartoons assisted English second-language learners with scientific jargon and served as an educative curriculum material for Intermediate Phase teachers. Furthermore Grade 4 findings suggested English home-language speakers struggled with scientific language, compared to their second-language peers who achieved greater results due to the amount of effort and determination they dedicated to translating these concepts. Further studies suggested this maybe because science terminology does not form part of their everyday vocabulary, therefore experiencing difficulty with scien1. These occurred through embodied experiences of the culture of the Other, as well as through bodily negotiations with the Other. Eighty five percent of learners are not being educated to a level where they can become independent and productive members of society. In recent years, mindfulness has been recognised as a means of optimising effectiveness, learning ability and general well-being. The intention of this research study was therefore the development, presentation and evaluation of a learning programme that focused on developing listening skills through sound and rhythm with a view to improving the ability to focus attention and facilitate mindfulness. A literature review was also conducted, not only on the benefits and effect of sound and music, but also mindfulness itself, its importance and relevance. The research took place at an aftercare facility in an economically challenged area in the Western Cape of South Africa over a period of ten months. The approach adopted for this research study has been qualitative, multidisciplinary, interpretive and interventionist. Data was collected through field observations, interviewing and using visual participatory methodologies such as drawing and videos. In the course of the research, two major themes emerged namely intrapersonal transformation (including sub-themes of musical aptitude, active listening, focused attention, calmness and presence of mind) and interpersonal transformation (including sub-themes of teamwork and group accomplishment, awareness of others and service). It is my contention that the data from this intervention programme enable me to conclude that music activities provided opportunities for the children involved in this study to develop aspects of mindfulness. It is hoped that the research insights and findings, both from the literature survey and the intervention programme will help to advocate the core positioning of music and the arts, not only in the primary school curriculum, but also in teacher education programmes. I believe that the research study also indicates that further implementation of the intervention programme, would prove useful in developing an education curriculum that has mindfulness at its core as well as going some way towards clarifying a means by which musical sound can be utilised in a way that is meaningful to all South African children.

It is hoped that the research insights and findings, both from the literature survey and the intervention programme will help to advocate the core positioning of music and the arts, not only in the primary school curriculum, but also in teacher education programmes. I believe that the research study also indicates that further implementation of the intervention programme, would prove useful in developing an education curriculum that has mindfulness at its core as well as going some way towards clarifying a means by which musical sound can be utilised in a way that is meaningful to all South African children.

The aim of this study is to understand how IQMS practices and systems promote continuous improvement. This was a case study of four primary schools located in different contexts in East London District. In-depth interviews were conducted on a total of 12 participants across all the schools. There were three main findings. First, IQMS is understood and practised as an external intervention. It appears not to have been internalised as a quality management system. Second, the participants were ambivalent about the IQMS practices as enablers and as barriers of continuous improvement. A fair amount of educators did not view IQMS as daunting as some had portrayed it. Third, There were blurred lines between what participants recognised as systems and the actual practices in the implementation of the three IQMS policies . There was no evidence of systemic thinking on the part of practitioners. As far as the IQMS systems and practices are concerned, no direct mention of evaluation variables or paradigms can be found, making it somehow complex for educators to distinguish between identifiable systems and practices. Finally, the external and internal quality assurance practices seemed to have been subsumed under managerial imperatives of compliance and accountability. Educators revealed that they merely undertake the process as they are compelled to do so as an expectation or requirement by the Department of Education. Given the above findings it can be concluded that and if continuous improvement is to be achieved through the IQMS strategy, there is a need to re-invent it such that , embedded in its systems and structures is a culture of continuous improvement. The reconfiguration of IQMS should look for mechanisms for integrating the three policies. The study recommends, for practice there should be a balance between professional development of educators and managerial imperatives that demand compliance and accountability. Further study must be undertaken to unravel the three IQMS policies.

The study showed that the role of AMMs in the planning and implementation of curriculum change in PHEIs was too complex and demanding because they spent most of their time on daily administrative routines instead of on core academic activities such as planning and implementing curriculum change in their departments. The AMMs in the PHEIs under study operated more like managers in academic departments than academics in management. As a result the study showed that AMMs faced more challenges than opportunities in their planning and implementation of curriculum change in PHEIs. The major challenges AMMs faced in the planning and implementation of curriculum change were a highly controlled and strict work environment, role conflict, lack of autonomy, role strain and heavy workloads which limited the time AMMs spent on the core business of managing curriculum change in their departments. The study also highlighted some of the strategies albeit a few, which, despite the numerous challenges AMMs faced, are used to try and make the planning and implementation of curriculum change by AMMs was to some extent successful. The study provided insight on the influence of AMMs biographical characteristics as well as the influence of AMM job requirements (such as having a detailed job description and having authority over curriculum matters) on how AMMs enacted their role in curriculum change. Based on the results of the study, a model to assist AMMs in the effective planning and implementation of curriculum change was proposed.

The research was conducted on sites (schools) and included seven learners, seven teachers, three principals, three parents who are members of the School Governing Body, three parents, as well as a District Official. Permission was sought and granted by the Provincial Education Department – Gauteng Province, as well as by the District Director.

The study was necessitated by the continual abuse of democratic values by school leavers in the district before, during and after elections. Such continued abuses make one wonder if schools really inculcate democratic values of justice, equality and liberty in their pupilsas enshrined in the curriculum. Using a qualitative approach, the study is located within the interpretivist research paradigm. A case study design was adopted and three primary schools in Shamva District were purposively and conveniently selected for this study. The sample comprised three 3 primary schools heads, three 3 deputy heads, nine 9 teachers, five 5 school leavers and fifteen 15 prefects aged between 10 and 15 years old. Data was generated through semi-structured face-to-face interviews, focus group interviews and document analysis. The findings of the study revealed that schools had challenges in inculcating democratic values of justice, equality and liberty in learners. The challenges included difficulties in interpreting the syllabi on inculcation of democratic values of justice, equality and liberty in learners; democratic values being viewed as sensitive content usually misconstrued to be favouring certain political agendas by community members; and the lack of a clear cut democratic values curriculum framework to guide teachers on teaching democratic values of justice, equality and liberty. Some of the recommendations were that teachers should be protected by legal instruments like policies to enable them to freely teach sensitive content. The sample comprised three 3 primary schools heads, three 3 deputy heads, nine 9 teachers, five 5 school leavers and fifteen 15 prefects aged between 10 and 15 years old. Data was generated through semi-structured face-to-face interviews, focus group interviews and document analysis. The findings of the study revealed that schools had challenges in inculcating democratic values of justice, equality and liberty in learners. The challenges included difficulties in interpreting the syllabi on inculcation of democratic values of justice, equality and liberty in learners; democratic values being viewed as sensitive content usually misconstrued to be favouring certain political agendas by community members; and the lack of a clear cut democratic values curriculum framework to guide teachers on teaching democratic values of justice, equality and liberty. Some of the recommendations were that teachers should be protected by legal instruments like policies to enable them to freely teach sensitive content. Teachers also need empowerment in syllabus interpretation on the inculcation of democratic values to be able to effectively promote the teaching of democratic values of justice, equality and liberty. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Education, 2020

- Description: School principals are expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing quality teaching and learning in their schools. As leaders of organisations called schools, where teaching and learning take place, they need to possess particular skills to enable them to effectively deliver on their responsibilities of supporting teaching and learning. This means that a school principal is at the centre of any change that must occur at school level. He/she is expected to create a positive learning space by providing a healthy climate for teaching and learning in the school. However, some secondary schools in the King William’s Town Education District are performing far below the national average when it comes to the Grade 12 results. For this reason, this study sought to explore the views of the school management team members in two such schools on the role of principals as instructional leaders. The case study was premised within the qualitative research approach and the interpretivist paradigm was used as an epistemological base to investigate the views of the school management teams on the role of principals as instructional leaders. Eight school management team members were selected from both schools and the data was collected by means of face-to-face semi-structured interviews and documentary analysis. The data showed that participants had divergent views on how principals play the instructional leadership role. It appeared that principals employed different strategies in supporting teaching and learning in their schools and the focus was on control rather than support. It also emerged from the data that there was a lack of professional support at all levels in the selected schools, and parents were not involved in their children’s academic work. The researcher concludes that there seemed to be no systemic and coherent support strategy focusing on teaching and learning, as there were divergent views on how principals perform their instructional leadership roles. The study therefore recommends that principals be trained on instructional leadership to give them a deeper insight into supporting curriculum implementation in their schools.
