- Description: My thesis is a collection of short stories that tap into cultural, literal references, both oral andvisual, and also draws on images I have seen and have struggled to get out of my head. The collection draws on Alissa Nutting’s distorted realism and Noy Holland’s evocative imagery to make even the most mundane things feel like something out of the ordinary. An unreal way of looking at real things. The stories are interrelated only insofar as they seek to normalise or neutralise the peculiarity of society’s seemingly outdated people who come from the rural areas. Their faces, their stories, their general mannerisms. To capture the tone of their emotions, their small plights, and to give an in-depth look into how where you are affects the very shape of your face.

- Description: This collection of poems is an interrogation of the self - turbulent urban experiences, fear, betrayal, mistrust, unfulfilled sexual desires - made with plain language, truthfulness, subtlety and humour. The poems are reflections of New Brighton township where the poet was born, they mirror his experiences of family life, the streets and the juxtaposed characters he encountered as an artist, drinking partner and lover. These experiences shift between broken family lives, passionate short-lived romances, heated artists' debates during gallery exhibitions, shebeens and dangerous midnight homecomings between cruel thugs and greedy whores and all those who clutter the shebeens and the streets at night. The poems reflect all facets of these experiences - including imagination, emotion, and fantasy. At times grammar and syntax are sacrificed in order to get to the emotion. The collection draws strong inspiration from the Peruvian poet Cesar Vallejo -- with his clear-cut graphic imagery and sincere morbid undertone, he is unquestionably true to his vision of life. This also applies tothe work of Tchicaya U Tam'si, Blas de Otero, Dambuzo Marechera and Roque Dalton, who have all been influences.

An investigation into the effect of an Extensive Reading Programme on bilingual Grade 3 learners’ reading attitudes in two primary schools in Grahamstown

- Description: The focus of this study is to explore formative intervention of a bilingual Extensive Reading Programme (ERP) in two Grade 3 classes in Grahamstown, South Africa. ERP involves access to large quantities of reading materials for pleasure and to reading opportunities (Bamford & Day, 2002; Krashen 2004). The current focus on measurable reading achievement in clearly defined areas such as vocabulary, fluency and comprehension has resulted in reduced attention towards the affective component in relation to literacy development, and links attitudes to reading success. This study helps to fill this gap by examining the effect of an ERP on the reading attitudes of Grade 3 learners. The study draws on Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) to make sense of learning and social change through mediation, scaffolding, interaction and collaboration learning. The ERP is located within a broad framework of literacy and incorporates a balanced reading approach implemented in an informal reading setting so as to motivate, encourage and nurture reading for enjoyment. This formative intervention used expansive learning cycles to develop a responsive ERP that was implemented and evaluated to investigate its effects on learners’ reading attitude. There were three phases (pre-, during- and post- intervention) that were designed over 31 weeks where rich, qualitative data was collected from questionnaires, observations, learners’ drawings and interviews. To make sense of this data, concepts from CHAT such as contradictions, expansive learning, double stimulation, transformative agency and sustainability were used (Engestrom & Sannino, 2010; Haapasaari & Kerosuo, 2015; Saninno, 2015). In addition, Mathewson’s (1994) reading attitude model addressed the attitudinal aspects of the study whilst a multimodal social semiotic perspective (Kress & Van Leeuwen, 1996) was used to analyse learners’ drawings. The findings of this study demonstrate the effectiveness of combining top-down and bottom-up reading methodologies. In both research sites there was appreciable change in the number of books learners read. Learners also began to volunteer to read and participated in book talks. Through access to a variety of reading materials and reading opportunities, learners demonstrated agency, criticising some ERP practices and modelling new ways, thus claiming and sustaining the reading programme. Being provided with a safe, informal learning context where reading was presented as a social activity, learners gained confidence, engaged in meaningful discussions and improved their self- esteem. Finally, learners continue to access these resources even beyond the research programme.

Her world becomes a different place as she questions everything that she has been taught about relationships, religion, race and her place in society. In the search for answers she uncovers stories about the lives of her parents, grandparents, relatives, friends and acquaintances. Embarking on a journey of discovery and rediscovery through her experiences and those of others, she explores the ways in which the things that she thought she knew defined her behaviour and expression of herself.

Written in a fluid blend of isiXhosa and English, the stories make use of innovative forms and an inventive, pared-down language to create new and strange perspectives on our past, present and future. - Description: One theme of this collection is the joy and the deep seated grief of my community of Kwa-Nobuhle; the brightness of hope on the faces on children running around our streets, the strides made by their mothers, the confusion of factory workers who are lost in darkness since the dawn of new dispensation. Then there are more personal poems: my own joys as well as the difficulties that have kept me from sleep and strangled my dreams as a writer, even though like Mafika Gwala, I believe that “words are born the way mothers beget children/words are born to survive time”. My style is influenced by imagistic, mystic and soulful poetry, such as the haunting Spanish voice of Garcia Lorca who wrote “I lose myself in the heart of certain children” and the absorbing isiXhosa voice of S E K Mqhayi. In response to their poetry my offering will be words that enliven us; my style will be what I see in the mirror, through the window, the sound of rain on my zinc roof and what frightens me. , Ndixomoloze ndiboph’ amaxonya, ndisenza eli linge lokuzama ukuxhathalaza kulo msinga uzakutshayela ulwimi lwethu. Nantso ke incwadana ndiyithe qhiwu ngendebe endiyithiye ngegama elithi Umhlaba Umanzi. Umhlaba umanzi ziinyembezi zabalilayo, umanzi kukubila kwabasebenzi besombha eludakeni, ufumile ziinkathazo zeminyaka zesizukulwana sesizukulwana. Injongo endifuna ukuyifezekisa ngeli nqaku yeyokuba umntu achole ntwana ithile ngokujonga imeko esiphila kuzo gabalala, ekuhlaleni, emakhayeni ethu nakwii ndawo esixelenga kuzo. But things go horribly wrong when local delivery boy Cards Bennish is kidnapped by Leofric’s competitor before he can deliver the goods that will cover Leofric's debt to the gypsy. In this world, humans can shape shift into animals, entirely or only partially, dog fighting is the favourite pastime for high stakes betting, and power belongs to the highest bidder. The gypsy’s final bet, for the highest stakes yet, will seal the fates of a number of people, for better or worse
